"We have much to settle with your kind"
Does this mean Government personnel may be heading for Elbaf too?
What a great chapter this was. Character interaction and moments have always been one of Oda's biggest strengths and this one had lots of standout moments.
It's a bit disappointing that the Gorosei are just as flat as any Celestial Dragon but everyone is probably used to that by now ever since Saturn's turned out to be a boring evil guy.
The Looney Tunes action on the other hand continues to be a blast. Oda's clearly enjoying himself getting zanier and zanier.

I actually think their flavor of evil is quite unique for One Piece at least. Just this overwhelming callousness. They aren't cackling maniacs like other wannabe gods Enel and Doflamingo or petty idiots the other world nobles. They truly act above it all. Saturn showed a sadistic streak but he didn't really revel in it like other villains.
It's a fairly common villain archetype, but in One Piece they stand out because everybody else is so quirky. But these guys are just all business and no fun. It really feels like they exist to oppose joy itself, so they're a very good contrast to G5.

The gigant pirate crew has a certain vibe, the various randoms shown in this chapter reminds me of something. Are they a reference to something?
Oda noted that Vicky the Viking influenced his growth as an artist, some of the giants share extreme resemblance to the main cast of that show. Oimo and Kashi especially, but the fresh faces in this chapter and the last share roughly the same features. Basically the Vicky crew, just in a badass style.
Oh that could be it, i definitely saw that show when i was little.

Figured as much, it was also super popular in Germany. Live action and CGI adaptions (plural) level-popular.
Is the guy who created it a big deal in Sweden? Like Astrid Lindgren tier?
I look at Mars eyes and I think of Luffy getting the little Haki looking illustration over his eyes in 894. I would like to see the base forms of the Gorosei without Awakening. Base - beast and hybrid. At least I got to see Kaku and Lucci before they Awakened. There might be a chance if they become a bit exhausted and can't hold up Awakening as much as before.
Cool little info when the giants said Elbaf has a jungle full of giant beasts. Getting hyped for it to be the next island!
Not sure if I understood why, in moment Lucci was giving the Elder the info, he had a little black snail in his arms. Was he also relaying the information to the marines? Was it amplifying his voice? Recording?
So Zoro alone was able to make King fall to the ground, while Zoro and Jinbe together were unable to make Lucci fall to the ground.
I find that quite interesting.

I'm just wondering how much giant heritage we'll learn while other there. Quite a few connections Oda could make there.

The Black Den Den Mushi is used for wiretapping, so at first I thought Oda was saying Lucci was eavesdropping the calls between Sanji/Nami/Jinbe and that's how he knew where they were planning to meet. But checking on previous chapters, they actually made those plans in front of Lucci...
Maybe Oda forgot Lucci witnessed them doing those plans?
I also don't get what is going on on the back of Nami's panel. Seems like Lilith, Brook and Chopper (?) are cheering Usopp and there's this "pi pi" sound going on... maybe he is trying to maneuver the Sunny back in position and it's a joke on the alert sound big vehicles do when moving back?
Okay the baseball was a new gag beyond the eyes, how about next Luffy uses paint to lead the Elders into hitting a wall, Road Runner style

It's Heavy Chopper, Brook and Lilith trying to get the Sunny in position while Usopp directs them.
I don't know if its true, but I already dislike the baseball stuff, I keep hearing he made the paint brush and bucket from nothing. Hopefully that is not the case.
Chapter was underwhelming in general.
None of the elders excite me in their beast form
Making them fighters was a mistake, making them conquerors was a grave mistake, and finally making them immortals on top of all that is just absurd and ridiculous
When they were commanding from top of the world they had aura and weight around them, that feeling is gone. now they're generic obedient pawns, no charisma no ambitions and no cool abilities, that panel of them standing front of giant captains felt like they're an upgraded version of the prison guards. except they talk and can't die.
Last panel of the chapter was a long awaited one, This could be the best thing that comes from Egghead. I hope this metal giant showcases the strength of the ancient kingdom not just drop some lore.
Looks like that's it for Kizaru on this arc. shame he deserved better. heavily distracted by his mission & no awakening and no proper fights.
@Cockycent I mean…there’s a precedent as to how the cap/paint could’ve appeared from earlier this arc…
Or maybe there was a paint/cap vending machine nearby that Luffy just got that stuff from.
Or there’ll be an SBS on how a cap and paint can were conveniently on the floor near Luffy when that happened like Oda has done to explain doors magically being fixed or other continuity errors.
All we know right now is what we saw on the page…
I wonder what Dorry and Brogy’s relationship to Loki is? He’s king of the giants right? Does that mean the giant pirates (or the new giant pirates) obey him?
@Shiebs He is at least a prince. I wager he's probably not the heir if he was going to be married to the so-called evil spirit's child.
@Cockycent so the paint bucket had to come out of thin air but not the bat who had to be an existing object!
can't believe wano gear 5 was better. it had less crap and was funnier in general. it's like comparing one trash bag to another, one is less smelly while the other is wetty and drippy.

@electricmastro Loki, in the original Norse myths, was actually a Jotnar who lived among the Aesir. Although he was Odin's sworn brother (not his adopted son as Marvel does), he was kind of what TV Tropes calls "the friend nobody likes".
Of course, as he was fated to become the leader of the Jotnar and Unvaliant Dead in Ragnarok doesn't help things, either.
Last one going into another long break. Potentially but not definitely the end of volume 109. And I think a shift into the final bit of action for the Egghead Arc. While I'm disappointed to have to go three weeks without, I definitely prefer Oda getting the downtime he needs to carry the story through to its end inn the best way possible. And the phrase "scheduled maintenance" in the announcement makes me think this is going to end up being an annual thing, which at least means it won't be a surprise in future years.
We do at least get some gorgeous colour pages for a send-off. The classic piratey vibe of the Jump cover has a whole lot of appeal while the colour spread has some gorgeous lighting for Copic work. The transparency on the jellyfish is stunning. There's cute symbolism in giving Kuma a seahorse shirt, perfect for the series' most dedicated single dad. Bonney and Vegapunk getting to be included is also a good touch, Always nice when current arc characters get to hang out with the crew on these things. I also really like the One Piece logo down the bottom with the jellyfish top and tentacles around the O.
Mars breaks inside the barrier. I initially thought he'd was rebuffed by the lasers last week, but I should have known he'd be able to use his immortality to power through undaunted. And that makes the situation really bad for the crew.
The apparent lack of concern the Strawhats have for Vegapunk's broadcast is interesting. I actually had to go back and double check if they even knew it was happening at all. They do, but it still doesn't really seem to concern them. Escape has become the most important thing, and though I'm sure they'd stand and fight if one of the surviving Vegapunks said it was their greatest dream and the Stella's dying wish to make sure it goes through, but even they seem to be putting their lives first. It's actually kind of funny the number of people complaining last week about Oda using the 'ticking clock' trope in yet another arc, only for the crew to just outright ignore it and continue with their original plan of escaping. All this plus the escape map to lay out the distances and groups involved paint a picture of how the final stage of the arc is likely to play out.
This is an interesting chapter for Lucci. Obviously a commanding show of strength to stay standing after Zoro's big hit and then to remain conscious and clear-headed after Jinbei's subsequent blast, but also to call Kaku his partner and beg for his life to the ultimate authority of the Five Elders. Remember, in Lucci's eyes 'gods are not bound by logic' and 'it is the natural order for gods to have whatever they desire' (chapter 907). He also showed an extreme callousness toward any team member he thought wasn't performing up to par at Water Seven, like the potentially now-dead Nero. To make the request at all, to a man whose desires and whims have complete priority, speaks to a kind of camaraderie I never would have figured he had in him. At some point I'll have to go back over Water Seven properly and see if there's anything that can be interpreted differently with this side of him in mind.
Lucci also looks absolutely terrified when Mars appears, but he immediately recognises the Elder even in his monstrous form and doesn't hesitate to obey. We were told before that anyone below the rank of commodore can't even meet them, but it wasn't clear how much of a secret their specific powers were. York's reaction at the end of the chapter shows that she wasn't aware of the demon forms, despite the Vegapunks having had audiences with the Elders.
The Haki roar is a cool show of power. I'm looking forward to learning more about the limits of the physical effects of Conqueror's Haki and how much they can be controlled. I also loved the visual gag of all of Luffy's stuff blowing off, seeing him stick his scars back on. Amazing comic instincts on that one.
I think one of the big important things to remember for Luffy's characterisation in this chapter is the way the giants talk both with him and about him to Warcurcy. They say that he looks like the god they've heard tales of, but when Warcury asks who Luffy is to them, the only important part is that Luffy is their friend. And we learn concretely that it wasn't even the Nika appearance that inspired them to come intervene, they just saw that he seemed like he was in trouble in a place they were close enough to. Luffy isn't the messiah of the giants (at least not yet), just a guy who makes the right friends.
I try not to dwell on spoilers without the full story, but they definitely coloured my perception of this chapter's baseball bat gag. When I read that Luffy 'conjures' a bat, I was extremely worried. I have raged against the perception that Luffy's new power is literal imagination and that he can magic things into existence or warp reality in any tangible way. I would not want that to be the way the story progresses. Imagine my relief when the outcome is only as absurd as turning a palm tree into a bat with his teeth. I could take or leave the paint and hat. They only interact with Luffy himself and are gone in less than a page, so I can take them as part of the bit. The paint in particular is funny because to leaves the bat looking exactly the same as if it had a layer of Armament Haki (at least as far as Haki is portrayed to the readers). That's like the one part Luffy could have just manifested through willpower and he finds paint instead.
I expected more emphasis to be placed on Ju Peter's revival, but he's just kind of there after the explosion. Do we think the original head reattached to his body, or did he grow a new one? Maybe Oda's saving that reveal for later, when we go further into what the Elders really are.
As much as I want to see Franky get some action, I think the three vice admirals are setting up a Kuma moment, probably his big finale for the arc, whether it's a full awakening or death, or taking his daughter and teleporting away. Borsalino seems to be out for good, understandably overwhelmed by his emotional distress. I wonder if there'll be a tangible difference in the next fight against him, if it happens in a scenario where his heart can truly be in it. And then the robot, with that big, important Joyboy connection promising big things to come. I wonder, if the Strawhats are being characterised as unconcerned with Vegapunk's broadcast, if the robot will then be the force that makes sure it plays in full. Or is there some kind of twist coming about the broadcast's source that we haven't considered yet. Mars asks York about the room Vegapunk is in, as if he thinks the broadcast is actually live. Saturn only said to the other Elders that he thinks Borsalino killed Vegapunk, so they may be operating on the assumption he's somewhere else, especially if the technology to record and repeat a message via snails is not widespread.
But these are questions for three weeks from now. Meantime, I hope Oda enjoys his rest and processes everything he needs to process about Toriyama and comes back to the series refreshed for the home stretch of the arc.

Honestly, Robin is prob the only Straw Hat who'd be considerably concerned with what Vegapunk would have to say, and she just so happens to be asleep for it.
@electricmastro Good point, I wonder if that was deliberate. Hope someone's making a recording of the broadcast for her.

Zoro needs to learn how to paint his swords black to rank them up ASAP.
I fear for the crew because the Gorosei have guns. If Pumbaa gets tired of chasing everyone, he'll just pull out his gun and shoot like he almost did to Kobra. I can only trust Baldy to not use a gun because he has a blade.
Also, what did Doflamingo know that they couldn't just teleport down and kill him about?
I don't want to sound unappreciative, but these are mythical zoan DF. I would like to experience all of their base abilities before I see them awakened. Are they different? Mythical tend to have extra abilities aside from just transforming. This makes me grateful for when Oda too baby steps from the basics of Haki or a DF to the spins each user put on the abilities.
Now i'm seeing DF for the first time while characters are in Awakened mode. I can't tell how it was in base form unless Oda chooses to reel it in.
3 weeks break?
Is it Oda's health again?
I find the whole Gorosei confrontation a little off-beat. On one hand, they have crazy devil fruits and insane Haki and are supposed to be perceived as at least an admiral level threat. And on the other they aren't given much space to breathe and are bunched up together, facing a laughing Luffy.
Speaking of which, that whole baseball thing came out of nowhere, right? The user can literally do whatever they want, I guess.
I mean you already have Luffy capable of deflecting or returning projectiles in his base form, let alone in ultra gear. He can inflate himself and return them, he can inflate himself and blow them back probably, and he can swat them back with his arm as if it were a baseball bat.
I suppose making him carve a palm tree into a baseball bat with his teeth, conjure a bucket of paint and a helmet and act as player position in reference to a sport we never saw him mention is fun, but it's so ludicrous and out of place it's hard to take the fight seriously at this point. The way Luffy overdid it for a simple counter like that implies he can do way more than he did so far in this skirmish, so why play around so much.
Less is more, definitely.
Guess Lucci did all he possibly could for the WG at this point. Will the possibility of losing or actually losing Kaku be the trigger for his betrayal? Why doesn't any of the SH have such a possible subplot/character moment in an arc such as this one?

To me, their threat has already been undermined because their results so far have been pretty weak. Sure, Nusjuro was cool disabling the Pacifistas, but Luffy was one-shotting them 500 chapters ago. Mars has at least been shown to be competent, though he has no impressive feats so far (pushing through the barrier is easy when you can regenerate).
Saturn has been a let down through and through, to the point Luffy was handling him and Kizaru at the sabe time. His only successful attack so far has been piercing Vegapunk (after failing to pierce Luffy, Bonney, and Kuma). He was demolished by a single punch from Kuma. He was pushed aside by Luffy a few times.
Warcury shouts a "conqueroar" but what are the results? Random marine fodder fainting. It failed to do anything to any enemy. Then he attacks Dorry and Broggy and... they block him and push him aside. Who looks good after that?
Ju Peter was decapitated then disappeared for a whole chapter.
Really, it feels like these guys are not that strong. If not for their apparent immortality, 2 of them would be defeated already.
Defeating one Pacifista might not be impressive, but defeating ~25 in like 30 seconds, specially when they are spread out across the island, is really something. Not just in terms of power, but also speed (a case could also be said about the Pacifista in Sabaody being prototypes, but I don’t think Oda made a good job at establishing how stronger the Mark-III are for that to matter).
As for Warcury, I admit I don’t pay a lot of attention to Haki so I could be wrong, but I was always under the impression that CoC “waves” only affect people with no conviction. It doesn’t matter how strong the emissor is, as long as you pass the conviction test you are not affected.
The only times I recall CoC affecting characters beyond that threshold were Shanks in Wano and Warcury now.
Mars didn’t really do anything yet, but Jinbe was in shock in front of his Haki. And Saturn just casually spat a Buster Call made of nukes.
As much as I refused to accept it at first, I think it’s safe to say they as monstrously strong, even if at the end of the day plotarmor will prevent their actions from having any lasting result.

Results aside, maybe that's just what we're supposed to get out of this situation ; their haki proves they once were top figthers, but immortality and being continuously secluded in their office have made them complacent and these days they don't bother with dodging attacks. Until somewhere down the road, someone manages to bypass their immortality.

It depends on the strength of the user as well. Also, Conqueror Haki has been portrayed as causing shockwave-like effects (Warcury's does it for instance, which is why Luffy ends up "discombobulated"). Big Mom's "conqueroar" in WCI actually managed to incapacitate everyone without ear-plugs, including Smoothie and Katakuri, for instance.

They should at least incorporate their regeneration into their fighting. An immortal opponent should place himself to be attacked but seize the opportunity to strike back. These guys, however, have so far just rolled with the punches. They never seen to take tactical advantage of their regeneration.
When Luffy was putting himself back together, I looked at the image wondering, "why is he holding a fishbone?" And while very silly, Luffy falling to pieces like that might actually be related to the way Monet reacted to Zoro and his false swipe. Years ago a few people argued that was one of the first hints at Zoro's Conqueror Haki and this instance gives credence to that. Why it hasn't happened to anyone else I will just assume because Luffy and Monet have fluid bodies.
Pretty good that Dorry and Broggy don't see Luffy as THE Nika but just wonder why or how Luffy knew to adopt that image. Luffy is THE reincarnation(I always knew! I always had faith!) but they can find that out later.
Shout out to @stephen for another great translation. There is a lot more nuance in this read through.
@Deicide it doesn't bother me that much, to be honest. I would agree 100% for someone immortal/strongly regenerating who is constantly on the frontlines, but from what we've seen until now these guys have not had to lift a finger in decades (possibly centuries ?). They are not Katakuris trying to optimize every aspect of their devil fruit powers and fighting to stay ahead in a very competitive world: they have not been challenged for a very long time. They're allowed to get a bit rusty, rolling with the punches is acceptable as far as I'm concerned.
It's true that as a result they don't feel very threatening despite all their power, I'll give you that. I'm not sure if I want to let it ruin the experience, however. Wano and other arcs before set a precedent of the endgame having surprisingly low stakes in terms of what the antagonists actually achieve, so I've come to accept it as a flaw of One Piece.
@Razh Oh, for real? I never actually played it, I just remember it existing.
Seeing the bad guys unite and wear sports uniforms always make me laugh.
For some reason I actually thought it was a short animation, but I think I was either mixing it up with the short animation where they play football or maybe there is an animated intro to the game that I saw on youtube long ago.
@Hattori Oh, it really was a short animation, my memory did not betray me. Thanks, man.
Also, big props to Kuzaki Yao, he can play every single straw hat.
@flandrian15 said in Chapter 1111: Sun-Shield:
3 weeks break?
Is it Oda's health again?
He's taking a break now so that it's NOT about his health later.
@Robby One can only hope that Oda will start taking care of his health more and that Toriyama's death at least may serve as a warning to other mangaka.
@flandrian15
As far as I understand the cause of Toriyamas death.
He died of a acute subdural hematoma, a condition in which blood collects between the skull and brain.
So essentially hitting his head somewhere, thinks nothing of it and dies.
This can happen to anyone and has nothing to do with being overworked or any other kind of illness. Simply and accident which can happen to anyone at any point in one’s life.
