One of the most nicely adapted scenes in the series is Mihawk's meeting with Shanks in this one. I was missing Shanks' light-hearted side in the first two eps but his hungover line about beating Mihawk with his arm tied to his back was great.

RE: Chapter 1058: New Emperors
I don't know whether it's been discussed or not but another thing I found really disappointing was how the Navy dealt with the Warlords. When Fujitora mentioned Vegapunk's new invention and how it would make the Warlords superfluous, I was sure said invention would be an integral part of capturing them. Instead it looks like the navy just sent a bunch of warships to deal with guys like Mihawk who would just sink them effortlessly much like Crocodile did. Remember that panel where Hancock goes "Oh, they probably forgot how strong we are!" At least I thought a line like that was a setup for them getting crushed but it turns out the Navy really just forgot.
Seems like really weird writing.

MADS freeloader lmao.
Best part of the chapter
Isn't it a bit disappointing that the only female MADS member was just a fraud though? I guess Buckin has always been a con artist.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
I‘m all for unconventional casting in adaptations but the decision for Dragon strikes me as weird because everything else looks so close to the original. Not only does he look very different from the actors of Luffy and Garp but apparently he‘s also really short?! I wonder why Dragon is the only character for whom they went with a very different look.

RE: Chapter 1079: The Emperor's Crew, the Red-Haired Pirates
@Riddler said in Chapter 1079: The Emperor's Crew, the Red-Haired Pirates:
@Barkworm This is completely ignoring Kidd's and Killer's characterization in the last arc as semi-allies who would die for each other and have a deep bond and friendship. Readers aren't that forgetful and as I said, the character has his fair share of fans (also, seriously, am I the only one here who likes Killer and wouldn't want him to die? Maybe it's because I've just reread the chapter where he defeats Hawkins, that was a pretty awesome moment for him).
If this wasn't meant to be seen as morally ambiguous, then why end with Kidd's crew begging Shanks to spare their captain's life, invoking sympathy for them, instead of, you know, portraying them as murderous assholes that need to be put down?
Maybe we're talking past each other but that's basically my complaint: I really liked the Kid Pirates! That's why I didn't want them to go out this way.
You're right, the end is debatable. Giving them the finishing blow after they have already forfeited makes Shanks look unnecessarily cruel. But before that there were at least five different lines and panels that were supposed to make him seem like a complete saint. As I said, I didn't enjoy the writing here.

RE: Chapter 1081: Tenth Ship Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates, Kuzan
One very surprising and enjoyable bit about the chapter was how it seems like Teach renewed Kuzan's sense of determination which I didn't expect at all. Like everyone, I was convinced that Kuzan sought out Teach to pursue his hidden agenda (just like Drake did with Kaido) but it's much more interesting like this. Kuzan feels uncharacteristically (but believably) insecure in the flashback but Teach turns this around completely by offering him to join their crew.
Just a very good read. My only nitpick is that the chapter is set up in a way that makes Kuzan's situation more understandable and him even more likable. Then the flashback ends and Garp smashes his face to China, making him look like a bit of a jerk.
Then again, violence has always been Garp's way of showing his love.

@andre Wow, look at Inaki get all teary! I wish these guys all the best, they obviously put their heart and soul into it. It might not be for me but that‘s a non-issue.

@Zanze That's true, that arrogance she had before made for a way more interesting character than friendly princess no. 172.

RE: Chapter 1069: All Things Are Brought Into This World With Hope
Vegapunk‘s speech is deliberately vague, more pseudo-scientific explanations are guaranteed to come. What I actually like about this, is that it explains why characters often seem to get abilities that seem to perfectly suit them. Like, there‘s a guy whose actual name is ‘demon spider‘ and he just happens to be a spider Zoan? The world’s smartest guy has an unlimited brain capacity ability? How convenient! But now it seems like the fruit and the character are drawn to each other because of the character‘s desire. That‘s fine with me.
Zoan awakenings are still iffy. There‘s a nod to the ID wardens and Monsterpoint Chopper but it‘s still awkward that in the arc where everyone and their granddad was a Zoan, no one was explicitly mentioned to have awakened powers. Kaido casually explaining the very concept of an awakening makes it all the more irritating.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
@All-Fiction Well, my own son and I look about as similar to each other as Dean Damonse and Inaki so that doesn't bother me that much. However, I can hardly imagine this tiny guy portraying the very ominous and menacing Dragon.

RE: Episode 8 (Worst in the East) - Discussion
There‘s a lot of stuff going on in this epsiode and while it could have benefitted from a bit more focus, the individual parts were mostly wonderful. Arlong‘s actor had the camp level at just the right amount to make him still feel threatening (fantastic line where he goes „Fishmen will RRRRReign!“). And there was lots of Zoro/Sanji banter! Loved it when Sanji mocks him when he comes for seconds.

RE: Season 1 General Discussion
I watched the whole thing twice by now and while I have a lot of nitpicky (and some slightly more serious) criticism, the best I can say about this show that at its best it makes me 100 % remember while I fell in love with One Piece in the first place.

RE: Episode 7 (The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo) - Discussion
I just saw this one for the second time, it‘s an amazing episode. Most of the emotional beats from the Manga hit hard here, the character interaction from the crew is great. The Garp/Coby plot also works, especially Garp‘s conversation with Zeff but Coby and Helmeppo‘s scene in the bar is fun as well.
Only nitpicks here, does anyone pay attention to the sound effects? They sound terrible and make some scenes feel unintentionally funny because they are so cartoony (Zeff opening a bottle, him and Garp taking a sip and Nami stabbing herself in the arm all sound like they‘re in a Looney Tunes episodes).

RE: Episode 4 (The Pirates Are Coming) - Discussion
Re-watched this one yesterday, I liked it a lot more than the third one. Kuro's plan seems pretty wonky but Alexander Maniatis (the guy is only 30 years old!?) aced the character. The fights at the end were also great.
Another nice touch was the way Zoro's flashback was woven into his escape from the well. The way Kuina and Zoro swore their oath was a bit cringy but the rest was fine and that variation of the main theme for Kuina's funeral was BEAUTIFUL!
The low-key highlight of the episode is when Luffy asks Zoro how he found him and Zoro replies that he thought he was going in the direction of Kaya's mansion (which of course is the exact opposite).

RE: Season 1 General Discussion
@Hattori Some of the small details really make you smile as a long time fan. Like that pose in which Zoro lifts Morgan's safeis the same from Volume 2 where Zoro takes the cage in which Luffy is trapped. Or Buggy's intro pose on the chair is exactly the same as in the Manga. Then there's stuff like dead Pearl being among the Krieg casualties and so on.

I was wondering why no one brought up Ewoks as a reference point for Chopper but I had forgotten that those guys basically had no facial expressions.

The actor said in his IG account that his part has been cut.
Oh, he probably just had a cameo part as young Dragon. In his IG account you can see him in costume without the facial tattoo just like in chapter 0.
