What I dont understand about the drama is why are people trying to place him in a box so much.*
Its not like you re either cisgender or trans, with no inbetween.
There are queer and non binary people, who still end up looking, or like to look, either more feminine or masculine, they dont have to be androgenous.
And they still get to choose the pronouns they prefer, Yamato likes the male ones.So Yamato as been presented in both just one of the boys scenes and a just the girls colourspreads, because, despite his use of male pronouns, he doesnt show that much preference to either side.
Hes in between, not on the fence or undecided, but confortabily in the middle.*I do understand why so many care so much about this issue, its because they re wankers. Like literally, they need to justify the feelings in their pants about a fictional character are valid and not disgusting.
One comment I saw talked about finding comfort in seeing Yamato as trans, which is fair enough I'd say. I don't think that should take away from the flexibility in talking about where Yamato's character may go though. The fact that Oda was flexible enough in drawing Yamato on the color spread despite any backlash he'd get can speak volumes.
Thats precisely the point, my friend.
People are relating to Yamato's way of being. Using male pronouns but not hiding his more feminine looks. Being confortable in both the mens bath and the girls colour spread.
Yamatos development as a character as never once been presented as something related to his/their gender yet people keep trying to sell the idea that once Yamato drops the Oden moniker he'll also drop the male pronouns.
Kaidou, the type of parent who locks their child away in a cave hoping they starve, who hated Oden more than anyone, still refers to Yamato as his son.
I have never seen this type of discussion about Sanji's family name. We saw Sanji reject the name Vinsmoke and even saw why, we saw him trying to adapt to the suit and ultimately rejecting it but still coming to terms with how he was born and still throwing his family name way. And in all of this I saw no one insisting on calling him Vinsmoke Sanji because thats the genetic code he was born with.
So I dont buy the idea that Oh, we re just discussing the characters growth and progression.
People are using that as an excuse to be transphobic, and I do trully belive that a good portion is not doing it trying to be mean and are really just trying to understand a situation/character they ve never encountered before.
But even on this very forum we have trans people who besides giving their two cents about Yams and saying "Oh, this is perfectly normal. Being trans/queer and being more masculine in some things and more feminine in others (like every human being is)", have also said when these discussions cross lines and start just being hurtful, hateful, and descriminatory.
And talking about a secundary characters hopes and feelings for the future should never cross those lines, there is no reason to.
This is a comic book about uniting the world and its people and accepting people for who they are, ffs.
