Chapter 1088: Final Lesson
-
One take away from all this: If the fight was allowed to continue at Punk Hazard then Kuzan would have kicked Donflamino's ass. Power scaling has not been kind to that man.
Also, yeah Garp might be dead. Kind of vauge. On a more position note, I like the narrative of Garp believing that young marines are the future and Koby ultimately proving that with a feat that is frankly one of the bigger displays of power in this series so far. Only a few people could break something that big, and pre time skip non of the Strawhats could do that. Yeah, Garp might be gone, or probably not, but the future is looking bright.
-
Good to see Koby prove people wrong about being a useless weakling.
Also, maybe Blackbeard will use Pudding to access memories about Rocks from Garp.
-
-
It's absurd that the marines can't even defend themselves against an emperor without permission from HQ. Where's that bold Sakazuki attitude now?
Anyway, cool to have a glimpse of Amazon Lily again. I'm sure we will be back there soon for more flashbacks...
-
I love how far Helmeppo went from his first appearance. He's clearly not the strongest nor bravest, but he's still doing insane things. And to think he started as a spoiled brat!
-
This has been a discussion the entire week: is black lightning a sign of Conqueror Haki?
The answer is no. We've seen non-conquerors like Ulti, Jinbe, and Don Sai displaying it. Also, Luffy, Katakuri and others have shown it while not able to use Conqueror Coating.
Koby's attack is amazing, but we do not see the huge haki lightning that usually follows large-scale Conqueror Coating. This feels more like the techniques Don Sai, Don Chinjao or even Sabo used to spread damage.
-
Pizarro taking damage from attacks means his power is not like Pica's. His power is more like Robin's, in that he can spy on anything or create limbs all over the island, but suffering damage feedback from them. I was already matching him vs Robin, it feels even more likely now!
-
And in the end, a very predictable Garp's sacrifice. While Garp claims victory, none of the Blackbeard Pirates was down, giving them a much-needed win as well. Kuzan's face there. Is he affected by Garp's state... or Garp's words? He too was once "the future of the marines"...
-
And we are finally back on Egghead! When Ch 1089 hits, it will be 4 months and half since we last saw the Straw Hats. A third of the year!
-
-
Seeing Koby offer himself in exchange for the 800 marines was a great character moment way to wrap up that little mystery of how/why he got captured in the first place. It seemed super random at first, but this is an example of when offscreening it back then was the right way to go!
As much as Garp's end didn't seem definitive, there's no way (and no reason that I can think of) to bring him back in the future that wouldn't cheapen his sacrifice in this chapter. My bet's are on this being it for him. He died protecting the future of the marines--his legacy. Seems legit.

This actually might be part of the reason Oda didn’t have anyone join in Wano right away, because they would have had their focused lessened with this viewpoints switching around.
Heck, some people are already saying Jinbe’s focus is being neglected due to us having spent less time with him. Makes me wonder.
-
I'm not really sure what Teach's plans are for Garp. Is it simply just replacing Koby or is there now something more to gain that he couldn't demand before. As for Garp's status, I don't believe he's dead. If Oda does plan on killing off Garp, he will wait until Teach and Luffy are on Hachinosu and I assume that would be the climax of the next arc.
I'm very happy we're heading back to Egghead. I'm ready to see how the rest of this arc plays out.
-
It's crazy that Film Z actually predicted Koby's fighting style. The shockwave punch is there!
The film came out in 2012. Six years before Koby's 1st apperance post-timeskip. And 11 years before Chapter 1088.
It's very clear Oda gives input into such details. No way this is a happy coincidence!
On another note,m I really hate that in the end Tashigi did nothing. Why even bring her here, really?
I really wanted to see her doing something outstanding for once.
Maybe from now on she will be part of Koby's group, leaving Smoker on his own?
-

Tashigi showed concern for Koby before, so if anything I think that was meant to emphasize her concern regardless of what she did.
Doll also did tell Garp that she and others were going to Egghead, so maybe we’re meant to think that Tashigi and Smoker went their separate ways there, with Smoker going to Egghead.

That's a given, but maybe this event means Tashigi is switching company for good.

Let’s get this shit out of the way
@hideoushorrendous said :WAAAAHHH WAHHHHHH GARP GETS BEATEN AND IS CAPTURED BECAUSE OF KOBY WAAAAHHH WAHHHHH I HATE KOBY! HE’S USELESS TEARFUL WEAK LITTLE TWAT! CALLING A FICTIONAL CHARACTER A BITCH ON THE INTERNET TOTALLY MAKES ME LOOK TOUGH AND STRONG LIKE GARP! WAAAHHHH!
Anyway, this is a superb chapter. From Garp being the badass that he is, Koby showing his growth, and Kuzan seemingly being remorseful in one panel when Garp is lying on the ground. Also, of course, next week we’re back to Egghead, which is what I prefer compared to the side characters. I miss the Straw Hats so much. 9/10.

Yeah, I was never really one for their dynamic in the first place and that fact that Oda hasn’t showed them together since like Chapter 793 could be a sign he’s not keen on showing it sooner either.
If Smoker’s head is still at being willing to stand up against the higher-ups for the greater good, then I think he would have a number of interesting scenes at Egghead considering Kizaru and Saturn.
-
if this is the end of Garp then i can't help but to feel frustration towards Oda
Garp clearly deserves more than this, he didn't even take one commander down with him, nothing but causing ruckus ( which was fun )
Koby being saved has Perona involved which again not all credit go to Garp
we lost Garp so Koby can rise
why can't he rise on his own ? pathetic soldier always gets his ass saved and now he's Garp's replacement by compulsion with CoC outta nowhere agh
yes i don't like it and i won't shy away from saying what i feel while reading this crap of a chapter. Koby still sucks and will never be an admiral since he joined sword.
hero my ass, heroes don't need to get saved every time.
-
So this I think is valid enough to ask at this point:
Where is Kuzan’s mindset at right now?
-
-
I really hope Oda won't drag Borsalino and Saturn's arrival so he can continue to pretend the Seraphim are a threat to Luffy... It just occured to me that with gear 5 shenanigans, Luffy should be able to easily blow their flames out and defeat them!

Well, Luffy still hasn’t defeated them like Lucci was saying. So I guess this isn’t as easy as one would think.
-
@electricmastro Luffy hasn't used gear 5... If he did, i feel like that's what would happen. But i guess we will see next chapter.
-
Unlike some people, I wouldn't mind Garp dying here without Luffy to witness it, because I was expecting something as amazing as Jiraiya x Pain (not only in terms of action, but also in raw emotions). Maybe my expectations were too high, but we barely got anything.
Garp had some cool scenes, he is the kind of character who oozes charisma, but so few it's almost like this is only a teaser instead of the real thing. Of course, he is not declared dead, so the emotional impact might be lacking because it was not supposed to be there in the first place. But focusing on 1088 itself, Koby is the insipid future of the Marine and most of the chapter was a long prologue to his feat that was already obvious by page 4, so, yeah, I was not very excited this week.
A part of me was pleased to see Tashigi failing to do anything relevant once again, but considering that was the role assigned to every female character present it might not really be her fault. Couldn't Kujaku's powers be helpful here?
All things considered, I spent most of the chapter thinking "Ok, I am ready to go back to Egghead already", so the final page was a genuine relief. Also, dumb Marines are so stuck to the rules they don't realize a baby doesn't need to fill a person's seat.

Not to mention this is Garp speaking. There should always be the option to put both in the boat, throw it to safety, jump in the water yourself and swim back to base
-
So are Blackbeard Pirates going to turn Garp into Cross Guild in order to gain the 3 billion bounty reward?
-
I do like how this chapter brings Garp's hypothetical at the beginning full circle. Koby's first instinct when given the question is to sacrifice himself, which is what leads to him being captured by Blackbeard. Yet Garp insists that the correct answer is to make the choice that benefits the future and thus influences his choice to stays behind, he still ends up making the same exact choice as Koby.
-
@access-timeco said in Chapter 1088: Final Lesson:

When you said "so stuck to the rules" I thought you would say something about how Blackbeard can literally take a whole battleship and 800 sailors without any of them reacting.
But the Garp example was just a philosophical question. It doesn't matter the size of the boat or the number of people, the point is just to illustrate a choice.
-
Things we should mention.
It's that Teach's crew went to the Hall cace Island and kidnapped Bodnigg's , who is probably able to read the Bongleph because of the three eyes,
That is, trying to replace Garb with roben, as some say, is impossible,
Bodnig mostly succeeded in activating her third eye with the events that happened with Sanji and his recognition that her eye is beautiful and all the shocks that happened there.
The way to laugh Tail will not be furnished with roses, he has a stubborn opponent, which is Titch, who will also arrive.
-
Technically speaking, in Garp's philosophy, Yamakaji should've stepped up and traded himself for all the other marines. Him being a vice admiral probably means a higher Cross Guild bounty than Koby, plus the rank to be a reasonable negotiation tool. That's the fundamental difference between Koby and Garp's choices.
I believe Oda's trying to portray that Tashigi's in charge of the civilians, which makes sense since she's not sword, and Kujaku is in charge of the ship, being the highest rank with Garp and Grus still on the island. It's a shame he couldn't portray it better though. Like showing Kujaku using her whip to make the ship faster. Oh well.
Koby, Grus, and Helmeppo's charge is just great. That's some great classic growth showcased. I understand it can feel weird to some though, cause in retrospect, this feels really, really late in the series to have such a scene. This is like Luffy's Marineford for these 3, which was ages and ages ago for us. We're in endgame and the new generation of marines are lagging so far behind in these developments and moments that it can feel too little too late for a lot of people. I still love it though and am happy to see Koby's generation that'll be there in the final phases to redeem the government. I especially love Helmeppo catching Koby after the punch.
And in the end, while successfully escaping, the damage to the Blackbeard pirates actually seems pretty minimal. The backlash damage to Pizarro doesn't seem like much, Wolf is back out without issue, Shiryu is fine, and Vasco never suffered in the first place.
The fate of Garp will be decided and shown to us later, once Teach has returned. He'll probably call Lafitte and Devon while they're at Egghead to tell them to hurry home, and that's how information will get passed on to the Strawhats about this. I don't think it'll prompt the strawhats to go to Hachinosu so soon, but it should be a good knife to twist to feed anger against the BBs. It's time to bring the entire BlackBeard pirate crew together to show us this villain squad in all their glory as they gloat and laugh at Garp.
But for now, we return to Egghead. I wonder how Oda's gonna do this. Unless Lafitte and Devon messed with them, there should still be the 30 pacifistas positioned to start firing on the government fleet. Will we cut back and go through the night fast? Have more strawhats been turned to stone? How did Lafitte and Devon make it to shore and what are they doing? Is Bonney done with her memory scans yet? Where the hell is Caribou? Many questions await us on a break week.

Cool action from Koby, Meppo and Grus. They seem like a fun trio.
I really think this is the beginning of the end for Garp. He is still alive but will probably be killed soon. I think he will be kept as a prisioner, while badly hurt, until he can send a message to Luffy (or even Dragon), or do something to help the Strawhats escape the BB pirates. Then, maybe Teach will kill him. That’s my prediction.
I wish that we can have a chapter at the end of Egghead with the current players: showing all that the Bb pirates and Shanks have gotten: Pudding, Garp and whatever they can steal from Egghead, and also the Road Poneglyphs. Just to emphasize the next threats Luffy will face.
Also, I really hope that Kizaru is the big enemy Luffy defeats this arc. I think this is the first time we don’t have a clear obstacle for Luffy. Skypiea took some time to introduce God, and W7 told us about a secret power that was acting in the shadows. But by the middle of the arc we knew who Luffy was facing, and I don’t think this time it will be York (unless secret mecha form or Seraphim) -
@Chams-0 Given how there's been no update on Moria, Garp's fate might depend on what BB deems more valuable: Garp's shadow or Garp's corpse.
-
@Sirxxx I also think it’s a very fitting end to the character and the survival of the future of the marines does honor by his legacy. However, I have noticed over the years that an actual death vs a fake death can be gauged by how extreme the other characters reactions to that death are. For instance, Luffy was catatonic when Ace died. Typically, in a fake death the characters seem shocked/upset/sad but the reaction is not nearly as extreme. This isn’t a sure fire way of telling anything but just something I have noticed.
-
If Garp was supposed to be dead here I believe it would be unambiguous like Ace/Whitebeard's death.
-
This is more the kind of chapter I expected to come back from the break on. Colour spread. Jump cover. A meaty 19 pages. The climax and conclusion to the cutaway sequence and a promise of seeing the Strawhats in the next chapter. What else could you want?
While this would make a fantastic finale to a volume, the full 12 chapters just doesn't feel likely given the breaks and how much they must push releases back. But seeing how the battleship bags paid off across two chapters, I don't think it would be right to split this chapter up from the previous one. We'll see though. Volume 107 is a long way away, no matter what chapters it's meant to hold.
The colour spread is a great throwback. Is it wrong to hope for the live action series' success just to see more spreads that tribute past sagas like this. Actually, Oda should do more of these whether the live action version succeeds or not. I guess this confirms Krieg really is gone though, just like the trailer suggested. It's cool seeing the early character designs redone in Oda's current style. Luffy and Sanji in particular actually look a lot younger here than they do in the present day manga, which is fun.
While he's certainly not gone for good, this chapter still feels like a sendoff for Garp, and it all happens in true Garp fashion - the man is sometimes hard to agree with, but he's always easy to like. Take the opening flashback to his lecture, Garp's "right" answer feels cruel and overly utilitarian compared to Koby's heroic ideals, and I personally can't get behind his thinking on it. But at the same time, Garp comes across far less hypocritical than his fellow officer that tries to claim they see all lives as equal. The Marines' bosses higher up in the World Government sure as hell don't, any of their underlings pretending otherwise are lying to themselves. Garp at least wants to channel the inequality in a way he thinks benefits future generations. And most importantly, he puts his money where his mouth is. When it comes time to choose between the geezer and the youth at the end of the chapter, he sacrifices himself without a second thought, laughing as he does it. You just can't hate this guy.
This isn't just Garp's chapter though, it's also Koby's. Just like in the exercise from the lecture, Koby decides the heroic thing is to save everyone except himself. The Amazon Lily scene demonstrates the use of SWORD and the frustrations the regular Marines face over the bureaucracy involved in picking a fight with an Emperor. It's a good follow-up to the SWORD explanation from a few chapters ago, giving a practical example to make it clearer. Something I'm not seeing Koby being given enough credit for here is how hard he played Blackbeard in this hostage exchange. On a surface level, trading 800 nobodies from the rank and file for a big shot hero must seem like a great deal for Blackbeard, but Koby being SWORD makes him useless as a hostage and bargaining chip. Eight hundred Marines who haven't signed resignations, who the Government would have a harder time writing off, would actually have given him more to work with. Well, it would have been a smart play, but Koby didn't count on Garp coming to act out his own philosophies in the real world.
The action here, as we build up to Koby's really, really big moment, is beautifully drawn and clearly panelled. The spread with Garp punching open the island's skull has to be one of the best of the year. We get to see a little more of the difference between Pizarro and Pica's powers here when he takes real damage from the island being hit. Definitely feels like more of a weakness than a boon, but I'm still glad to get more distinctions.
Another flashback brings the battleship bags full circle, and I love how Oda has handled these over the past two weeks. We get them once at the start of the last chapter to hype up Garp and Kuzan's strength, then a repeat near the end of the chapter that instead uses them to show how the pair's relationship grew. And that would be enough for a one-chapter gimmick idea. Good enough that you figure they're done. But then, rule of threes, we get them a final time to show how Koby is on the same path as the two monsters who were fighting last week. And you realise that's what they were really introduced for and it finally feels truly complete. It's just good storytelling.
And yeah, Koby smashes Pizarro's hand and it's very cool and well drawn. Great moment for his character. The line about living up to his expectations is a banger. Love that Garp can only laugh about it. But the biggest highlight has to be Helmeppo diving in so desperately to save him after. Genuinely very sweet considering how their relationship started.
While Garp's final scene here looks pretty damn bad, the lack of obvious blood on the icicle makes me wonder if he's truly impaled on it. And of course he's just "missing in action." People seem to be mad about this, adding it to the list of Oda's frustrating fakeout deaths and whatever. But come on. He couldn't have done more to tell us that Garp isn't dead short of an editorial line specifically promising the dude's return. Where's the fakeout meant to be? I don't love how Oda handles death either but this is one of the most honest character sendoffs of the series.
And then, finally finally finally, we make it back to Egghead for the next chapter. I'm so excited to see how the situation's developed there and see the crew again. Haven't had a canonical Strawhat appearance since freaking March and I miss them! Looking forward to seeing you all there after the break.

Or the most obvious: Garp's bargaining worth. The whole reason Garp was here was to rescue Koby who Blackbeard wanted to exchange in return for being recognized as a king by the world government. With Garp as a bargaining piece, the chances of that working should go way up!

Yeah, I agree. Volume 107 probably ends in Ch 1086. It would be great to see it go up to 1088, but it's very unlikely, and 1086 has its own "ending" feel with the conclusion of the Reverie flashback, all the reveals, and the death of Mjosgard.

Back to Egghead. Can't wait to see Nami beat Saturn with his own cane. Get these ol timers out of here. Its a new generation.
-
Back when Oda introduced Black Horse, I started wondering who the missing animals could be.
Koby crossed my mind, but since I couldn't see him getting to this level at any point before the epilogue I discarded the option.
Now he could definitely gain one of those Color+Zodiac titles... he could even inherit Garp's.@Deicide said in Chapter 1088: Final Lesson:

Maybe from now on she will be part of Koby's group, leaving Smoker on his own?
Maybe having her in this group was Oda's way to call our attention to the fact Smoker is absent.
They have been inseparable since East Blue (so really the beginning of the manga) and nothing pointed to that changing.
So maybe Oda did something to him and wants us to notice and start guessing.A gone rogue Smoker would be something I would definitely approve, particularly if it's such a roguey rogue that it's too rogue even for Sword.
-
When Oda kills a character, especially a main one, he makes you feel it and know.
Outside of maybe Pedro, who I still don't believe, it's usually obvious.
Garp is fine.
-
There is no way Oda killed off Garp with his last interaction with his grandson being letting himself get knocked out at Marineford.
-
I think Aokiji helped and applied the lesson of the old staying back and the future being saved. Not that Garp can't get passed him, but Luffy punching Garp during the war played in my head as Garp just blitz him. Difference is, Oda made it known Garp was taking the fall through multiple ways including Sengoku's reaction.
Here, I don't believe Oda has room to show if Aokiji is doing the same. Aokiji is doing what he wants and Oda most likely doesn't want to play with that, so it is hard to say Aokiji is not going all out or playing dumb.

@Captain-M Do you think Garp’s analogy would have been better if he used an example of a rookie and a grizzled soldier? I say this because militaries are in a way inherently utilitarian.

I wouldn’t doubt he’s on his way to Egghead right now after what Doll said. I’d be surprised if he took his interests elsewhere.

I see this chapter as big symbolic win for the Marine even with Garp being captured.
They dared to come to an emperor territory with just 1 ship, wrecked the place and managed to free everyone that was captured there.
I think all the Marines will take pride in that battle and find more hope in their chances against the emperors in future battle than despair that they lost Garp in the process.
As for Garp's fate, I believe he will be fine and freed later during the final war. I don't think BB won anything since there's no way the WG would agree to his demands in the first place. Actually Garp is a worse chip to bargain IMO due to his personality.
-
The only thing that could hint Garp's death is him being a D and laughting but yeah, it is highly doubtful. But now that he has mad his power succession to the future generation, I'm not sure Oda will give him a role in the final saga. He was a great character and this chapter shows why we love him.
I wonder what this will induce for the relation between Luffy and Blackbeard.Seing Koby doing something impressive was needed. Still, he has a long way toward his final goal.
-
@NephalLuci I don't think the analogy is necessarily something that needs improving by changing the terms of it. It's just a hypothetical.
Those kinds of questions reveal something about the person who answers it, for better or worse. Garp here reveals something about himself, and Koby's answer reveals his own character. It wouldn't be a bad lesson to get a feel for new recruits' priorities if Garp wasn't treating his own course of action as the only objectively right answer.
But the meat of the chapter is seeing the two characters stand by their answers when it's no longer a hypothetical. Saying you'll do the right thing is both easy and expected. It's easy to say in a classroom the best answer is to sacrifice yourself to do good by as many others as possible, but most of us would balk at the chance to actually do it. Koby offers himself up without hesitation. It's easy to say the youth should be prioritised, but harder to hold onto the idea when you're the oldest person in the room. Garp stands by his philosophy to the end. Lesser men would go back on their hypothetical answers to save themselves when push comes to shove.
-
@Captain-M Well said! Thank you for your reply. I really like the parallel between the new hero of the nave and the old. Perhaps their difference in ideals is to point out that this young generation of Marines will be an organization with a heart after the inevitable fall of the WG.
-
@NephalLuci Thank you! And yeah, that would be a good direction for Oda to take things. A Navy of people with Koby's morals would be a much more genuine force for good in the future than the current one.
-
Oh the spoilers didn't make it clear if the spread (a live-action advert) was just the pictures of everyone in live-action, but instead it's oda drawing all the main players from East Blue (in current style). I like it a lot. (although it seems Krieg gets the misfortune of being obscured in both ways)
-
Reposting my thoughts from the spoiler thread:
Really liked the character work Oda put in for both Koby and Garp.
Koby only landed on Fullalead because of his honesty and capability of self sacrifice for the sake of 800 marines, even getting scolded by Garp as a marine cadet didn't change this aspect of himself and it shows.
Meanwhile Garp is a man who is convinced that he has lived his great life already, and is looking to the future and the future only, he ultimately lived up to his convictions and self-sacrificed the old man, himself, for the sake of the future, especially the cadet that's finally fulfilled his wishes of raising a great marine that protects others.
Beautiful work from Oda imo.
@Captain-M said in Chapter 1088: Final Lesson:
While Garp's final scene here looks pretty damn bad, the lack of obvious blood on the icicle makes me wonder if he's truly impaled on it.
The icicle is lodged in the exact same place Shiryu stabbed Garp in the last chapter, so it seems like he did it to stop the blood loss, a form of emergency care that's disguised as malicious to keep the BB pirates thinking he's on their side.
Furthermore, Garp is frozen to give Blackbeard himself the ultimate decision on his fate.
-
So, when I first looked at the color pages, the "Netflix" didn't immediately register, and I thought that Oda was starting a new thing with this, which would be to commemorate all of the previous arcs, starting with East Blue, and that every color page from here on out would continue with the next arc, and so on.
For a tiny moment there, I thought that we're really entering the endgame, now. It was kind of a bittersweet moment, this realization. Even though we are not quite there yet, someday this story is going to end. There will be a last cover page story (I wonder which character it's going to be). There will be a final color spread.Oda should absolutely do the color spread arc recap thing when it's time, though.
Also, does this mean that Garp will be in the Netflix series?
