Biggest takeaway from the trailer is that Marvel absolutely could've done Ms. Marvel's powers right, they were just too cheap.

So that's why Krieg isn't in the latest color spread. Might still appear just to job to Mihawk.
As long as Sanji's flashback is still there it can still works.
-
Not a fan of Nami being part of the Arlong walk and going with Luffy to fight Arlong
-
looks like shit, that's fine though TV usually does

I am SO hyped. I really can’t wait for August 31st — so much love was clearly put into the series.
I’m a long time fan. I started reading the series in 2002 (with the publication of Shonen Jump Magazine) and my very first account on this board was created in 2006 (a story for another day).
I even remember being familiar with One Piece when the Alabasta arc was airing in Japan because of this website I used to peruse to watch random anime opening themes. It always made an impression and the silliness stood out.
Let me tell you that I couldn’t be happier with this outcome. It feels right. It feels fun. The outfits; the dialogue; the cinematography; the battles! I’m so excited.
-
I forgot how cool sanji was going to be in this because of all those martial arts.
Since Kobra Kai is also on Netflix, maybe they can get some of the actors to play the more martial arts focused enemies in OP.
-
Roger looks like he's about to threaten Leonard DiCaprio with a knife.
-
Even law seems to be in one of the episodes. Antonio galeas plays him, or at least that is on imdb.
Is that true???

@May00 said in One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced:
I can't imagine Sanji without Gin and Krieg - his most important character trait is shown through them during Baratie.
This is my concern as well. Gin and Sanji's relationship is pretty much the heart of the Baratie arc. Not only does Sanji feeding Gin kick off the central conflict of the arc (while also being part of that same conflict's resolution when Sanji's kindness is vindicated by Gin in the end), but Gin and Krieg are meant to be direct foils of Sanji and Zeff. Which in turn also lays out all the groundwork for Sanji character development going forward, particularly Whole Cake Island if they're hoping to get that far.
If they aren't planning on using Gin, then a different character needs to substitute for his role and that specific power dynamic he represents in the story. Which there really aren't a lot of options for, especially if they plan to have Arlong Park bleed into the Baratie directly. And if they are planning to planning to reduce the conflict in Baratie overall by cutting down on Krieg's role, then that runs the risk of basically gutting the Baratie (and in turn Sanji) of most - if not all - of its emotional core.
I also have similar concerns with how Buggy's introduction (and parts of Shells Town but I digress) might be handled. I have the sneaking suspicion that those shots we see of signal flares over the Nami's ship mean that instead of introducing Buggy in Orange Town he'll be ambushing them at sea; with the circus tent scenes we see being either on a ship or at least close by. Which on the one hand I can see why they would maybe elect to do that since it would mean having the conflict be relegated to one location that could be created on a closed set. But on the other hand Orange Town also introduced a lot of important thematic concepts - namely the idea that treasure is in the eye of the beholder - that get carried all the way to Arlong Park. Hell, Nami's introduction taking place in a small town (that the mayor calls his treasure) being terrorized by a pirate who's obsessed with money serves the outline for her entire character arc. Some of that concept still remains with Buggy cutting Luffy's hat of course, but I fear if we only have Luffy telling us about treasure being relative without showing us this in practice with other characters will end up weakening that message and some later emotional beats in the story overall.
-
the sad thing is Oda was okay with this pre release
the first OP saga was perfect, you don't need to fuck it
replacing Smoker with Garp is so idiotic. Nami's wig is just an eye sour at this point
Shanks looks meh.
-
Orange Town itself will definitely be in the show. You can see a shot of Nami near the destroyed pet food shop.
-
Trailer makes it look not so bad... I'll give it a shot. I couldn't even get through the early episodes of the anime though, so...
I just saw the teaser trailer for gear 5 though... It got me excited!
-
To the people who worry about Chopper: JIM HENSON'S CREATURE SHOP IS WAITING.
I often prefer puppets to CGI. The actors can touch them.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that! Well done News Coo.

Wow, I'm impressed. This trailer makes it look like they're avoiding a lot of the pitfalls of converting anime/manga to live action. I do appreciate the fishman. They look ugly, but not terrible for their setting. The actors are delivering their lines well. For me, the scars of Cowboy Bebop are still there, but I'm starting to believe I should trust this.
Still, and maybe this is just a nitpick, in that last scene withe the bounty posters...why Bellamy? Yeah, there's a few there but Bellamy's is front and center, if not a bit worn down. There's no way this series gets that far even if it's a hit. Why shown him then? Sure it could just be a reference, but it's weird they pick a Grandline pirate from later in the series when there's at least a few East Blue pirates to pick from.

They're more likely to get to Bellamy than Foxy or Cavendish.

I'd guess:
It's supposed to be easter eggs for fans. So picking people from East Blue is not really an easter egg, we will get to see all of them.
You have to pick someone from later on in the series that is recognizable. However, you can't really pick someone that might actually show up in a potential season 2 (e.g., Mr. 3) or someone super important (e.g., Blackbeard) if you have not solidified a casting choice. It is not really a cool easter egg if you change the actor.
Bellamy, Foxy and Cavendish are perfect. We'll probably never get to them, and even if we do, nobody minds if you pick a different actor/look in like...3-5 years.
-
@FatDogForMidTerms there's always a lack of marketing/ the audience isn't ready yet/ audience can't separate the source from the adaption/people's expectations were too high/ oda + fans involved can do no wrong, and/or whatever reason that can be used when that happens. So that side is pretty safe because they know that there's always something to grab on and coast along with if it fails because we live in a two side world now where nothing can objectively be bad. People defended Cowboy Bepop and, not saying this will be bad, they will find ways to defend this and blame something else when it comes down to it. I'm all for this succeeding, by the way, but it is pretty unpleasant to see either side being rejective and condescending to the other.
What is most likely the reason it "flops" despite being really good would be the large voice from the one piece purists that it lacks the faithfulness they expected but then it will be equally annoying when the other side defending this goes on about how Oda approves it so the fanbase should shut up despite manga and live action being two separate mediums.
-
@zeltrax225 good points. I don't want this to fail also, if anyone's wondering. I just think it will.
Because, and this is my main point actually, in all of this: why does One Piece need a live action series? To get more people to read it? Isn't it already fucking massive? Like almost-the-biggest comic book-in-the-world massive?
I know the answer, of course, money. There's money to be made from one of the biggest ip's around. That's obvious. I would greenlit that shit so fast if i was a producer. But outside of that, why?
One Piece was made for the medium of comics, that's why all the zaniness, heart it has/had and everything else works. (I don't watch the anime so I can't really give opinions on that). Not everything needs to be turned into something else, in my opinion.
Is it cooler to see Luffy punching someone in television than to read it in a page? ehhh. Not really?
Of course someone will bring up marvel and dc but I would argue they are different. Batman works in both mediums.
One Piece is perfect in a comic book. Perfect. A manga somehow holds all that alchemy (looney tunes + mystery box + adventure + drama + fighting + weird art) together. I don't think tv or movies ever will.Sorry, i need to go to yell at some clouds.
-
@Kaiolino Less about prod. cost and more about light based abilities. They want her and Monica to have similar abilities for Carol.
All of the series are made to serve the films. Same as making her a mutant. The creator of Kamala wanted her to be a mutant, but the at the time, the larger event demanded she be an Inhuman.

Everything almost ends up pointing to money in some direction, but I want to genuinely believe that it's kind of a dream come true for Oda to have this happen in the first place.

I think so too, and it probably also has a side effect of seeing how people react in hopes of greenlighting further seasons. "I didn't realize how much I wanted more!" kind of thing.

Like that.
You do realize that if the show doesn't succeed, your uhhhhh kinda smug answers to people who have negative feelings about the show will also look kinda silly?
They said smugly.
Which is why it's popcorn.
Being unflinchingly negative about the series is no longer about critical analysis, it's about proving someone wrong or proving oneself right.
There was always going to be that subset and for them, succeed or fail, there will always be a bitterness attached to the existence of the series. Either: 'I was right, it was garbage' or 'Everyone else is wrong'.
And it's unfortunate to see bitterness increase in the world over such a thing.
As for everyone else, good to see we're having fun.
-
@onemoment Because he's the Big Time Rookie, of course.
-
I think my main weird observation so far is Arlong's size during the face off. He seems big emerging out of Baratie though.
-
i can't get over how terrible the color grading is lol
-
@Cinder
Yeah, I think the 'bigness' of characters is something it will have to work towards. Not always cheap to do that and can, over time, be more troublesome/expensive than shots intended to be big displays. If OP gets that juicy S2 ok, I think you'll see more of that woven in.
-
Looks ok.
Roger looks like shit though. No offense to the actor, but he does not embody such a legendary pirate at all.
The news coo looks good though. Makes me excited to see what they did with Den Den Mushis
Surprised they cut out Krieg though.
I wonder how they'll depict Sanji's entire thing with feeding anyone.
Zoro's fight scenes look like they're really gonna pop.
Mihawk and shanks look cool
-
@kevo_koma said in One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced:

They did?
-
The teaser and trailer are notably lacking in Usopp fighting goodness, though I can already tell his rapport with Luffy is going to be great. Can't wait to see how they adapt his attacks and him in general.
-
@Cinder Arlong was the first real villain who was inhumanly tall, so at least Netflix Luffy doesn't worry about having to fight near-giants.
-
why didn't they announce the cast of Gin yet ?
seeing Arlong and his crew in Baratie was hella messed up, also Oda skipped Krieg in the colored cover
I'm really worried that Gin has been removed or omitted as Oda said in his message and if he's there they're gonna reduce him just like his captain which really sucks
Gin was the golden character in Baratie arc, a bad guy with a good heart, was strong enough to defeat Sanji and saves Luffy while sacrificing himself, not to mention he played a major role in making Luffy desires Sanji to join his ship
to be frank i can already smell the disappointment, the failure of following the source material just like in the Witcher series. Fuck Netflix.
-
Quite a few conclusions drawn there. Let's wait shall we?
-
The mindset that adaptations need to follow their source material 1:1 is just so stupid. That's not what an adaptation is supposed to be because that would be boring and impractical most of the time.
-
the anime counts as an adaption, almost nobody likes the idea of the anime being unfaithful to the manga
but now it should be okay ? with that midget arlong ? nah I'll let you keep it for yourself.
-
Of course, Anime adaptations are different because Shonen Manga are made with Anime in mind. And often they ARE boring.
Also, being faithful to the source material is different from slavishly following it. An adaptation needs faithfulness to the overall tone and mood, the "heart" of the main characters and the key plot points. That's it! If you want exactly the same stuff, go read the original.
-
Could have been better? YES
Especially because some decisions are utterly stupid and unnecessary, like Nami's wig, and the stupid montage/photography with the vasoline look and the fish eye pans...Personally I would have gone the 300's route...as in keep it the comic like possible
BUT
The point is that it could have been a million times worse
I think it's nice/good, if taken with the good approach, which is...an adaptation, another way to enjoy the story
Exactly like it already happens with the manga and anime and the non canon (or half canon) movies -
So, the Baratie door is okay as Zoro and Mihawk fight, but it shows Arlong breaking it. I assume Arlong and his guys show up after the whole Krieg debacle.
-
One question for @Greg if you can answer...
Is there going to be an adaptation of "We Are", eventually as an opening song?
One of the worse thing are the musics, which are way too much Pirates Of The Caribbean...while they should have been more "Black Sails"
But yeah, One Piece has so many iconic themes that every swashbuckle tune feels out of place -
There is a difference in me wanting it to to fail, and expecting it to fail. I guess I wasn't clear with that.
I don't see a need for live action OP series, I don't know how it could be an improvement or replace the original manga, but if it succeedes, great! That takes nothing away from me.
I just think it doesn't and I've contributed the reasons for this conversation.
-
While I've been very skeptical about this live action ordeal, the newest trailer actually has me excited for it.
My husband only ever sees me watching the anime from time to time and usually thinks it's strange, but he said the trailer looks great and wants to watch it. So there's that.

I'm assuming they did since its arlong we see at the Baratie.
Otherwise, why not show Krieg or Gin?

@kevo_koma I guess because the trailer and teaser have shown too much, so they are keeping him out possibly. His performer was already announced.
Now Gin is the mystery for me.

I didn't know he was already cast.
But its still pretty weird to hide Krieg of all people. Like they pretty much teased every major east blue character. With Zeff and Nojiko being the exception.
-
@kevo_koma Zeff was on the floor as Sanji kicked Kuroobi.
-
Didn't even notice it.
Oh well, one month to go. We'll see how it turns out. Hopefully its good.
-
Krieg was revealed in costume via their online campaign.
music
Was already revealed that teaser music was made specifically for the teaser and isn't part of the series.
Speculate what that means for the trailer as you will.
PotC doesn't have a lock on sea shanties. Those existed for...quite some time...before PotC so expecting something that sounds like a:
Light
Youthful
Adventurous
High-spiritedshanty variant is not exactly asking too much from viewer expectation.
The composer also ran down the list of the many varities of music that will be included.
With the tone being decidely ONE PIECE, expecting something dark and brooding to hang over the entire series is a bit much.
As far as covers etc. that's not up to me to comment on, I'm sorry.

I think it's quite obvious that the OPLA is being made for the general audience, who would never touch a comic (even less a manga) or watch a cartoon (most of all an anime). I have already seen numerous reports of people, who would never watch the anime or read the manga, go "oh the LA teaser/trailer looks interesting, I'll check it out once it has dropped". And that's exactly what this is for - bringing the amazing story of One Piece to people, who would have never experienced it otherwise and who will never dive into the manga/anime even after becoming fans of the LA.
By your logic, Harry Potter wouldn't have needed an adaptation too, because it already was the biggest children book in the world massive by the time the first movie was being made. Or Lord of the Rings, already the biggest fantasy book in the world massive long before the movies were made and also deemed unadaptable. Fans were ripping the first LotR trailer apart (and also the first movie when it came out) for being so unfaithful and hated on the movie. But in the end, it turned out to be the most beloved movie trilogy of all time, winning the hearts of (most) fans and non-fans of the books, letting millions of people experience the epic story who otherwise wouldn't have experienced it.
I'm not sure if Neflix will make any profit off this LA tbh. The production costs were high and as a LA adaptation of a manga, it has to fight with very justified scepsis from all fans, who deem it unnecessary, unsuited for LA. We are all scarred from all those bad LAAs that came before. And with their stupid business modell of dropping the whole season at once, I doubt anyone will buy a subscription when they can just get the free trial month.
So let's wait and see how this all turns out. I'm excited, I like most of what I've seen (except for the costumes and wigs), but I'm still keeping expectations in check simply because I know my LA history and it's never turned out well. Here's to hoping that the OPLA will break the curse.

I dunno, i just think comic book is the perfect vessel for One Piece, so in all honesty I don't see the need for anything else. But that's just me.
And I agree, those wigs and most of the costumes are awful. Some costumes worked.

The constitution says only marvel is allowed to make (unfaithful) comic book adaptations.
