Because, and this is my main point actually, in all of this: why does One Piece need a live action series? To get more people to read it? Isn't it already fucking massive? Like almost-the-biggest comic book-in-the-world massive?
I think it's quite obvious that the OPLA is being made for the general audience, who would never touch a comic (even less a manga) or watch a cartoon (most of all an anime). I have already seen numerous reports of people, who would never watch the anime or read the manga, go "oh the LA teaser/trailer looks interesting, I'll check it out once it has dropped". And that's exactly what this is for - bringing the amazing story of One Piece to people, who would have never experienced it otherwise and who will never dive into the manga/anime even after becoming fans of the LA.
By your logic, Harry Potter wouldn't have needed an adaptation too, because it already was the biggest children book in the world massive by the time the first movie was being made. Or Lord of the Rings, already the biggest fantasy book in the world massive long before the movies were made and also deemed unadaptable. Fans were ripping the first LotR trailer apart (and also the first movie when it came out) for being so unfaithful and hated on the movie. But in the end, it turned out to be the most beloved movie trilogy of all time, winning the hearts of (most) fans and non-fans of the books, letting millions of people experience the epic story who otherwise wouldn't have experienced it.
I'm not sure if Neflix will make any profit off this LA tbh. The production costs were high and as a LA adaptation of a manga, it has to fight with very justified scepsis from all fans, who deem it unnecessary, unsuited for LA. We are all scarred from all those bad LAAs that came before. And with their stupid business modell of dropping the whole season at once, I doubt anyone will buy a subscription when they can just get the free trial month.
So let's wait and see how this all turns out. I'm excited, I like most of what I've seen (except for the costumes and wigs), but I'm still keeping expectations in check simply because I know my LA history and it's never turned out well. Here's to hoping that the OPLA will break the curse.
