I think it was all for the gag of introducing Luffy as an emperor while being a pitiful beaten up mess in a cage. It was pretty good, 8/10.

I get the feeling the MCU has really ruined what banter is for some people. That line from Luffy is not really a quip.
It also doesn't sound like Luffy

I am very pro vaccines / pro science and took every single one that was offered to me and urged those of my family who were sceptical of covid vaccines to take it.
I STILL think this current attitude where we condemn anyone who has fears or doubts about vaccines as almost being the devil is very silly. It's doesn't lead to anywhere.
People also get killed because of their own idiocy. There has to be a middle road here.
edit: but then again these are just the ramblings of a sorta-kinda centrist trying to yell against a rising tide so carry on

Geez man, are you that insecure about your opinion? You keep seeking validation through this and the spoiler thread. You're not a lunatic for thinking Shanks was in the right.
You can just vote up a post you agree with too.
Calm down. Sometimes it's OK to appreciate someone's post with words. Hmm, almost like having a conversation!

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
@zeltrax225 good points. I don't want this to fail also, if anyone's wondering. I just think it will.
Because, and this is my main point actually, in all of this: why does One Piece need a live action series? To get more people to read it? Isn't it already fucking massive? Like almost-the-biggest comic book-in-the-world massive?
I know the answer, of course, money. There's money to be made from one of the biggest ip's around. That's obvious. I would greenlit that shit so fast if i was a producer. But outside of that, why?
One Piece was made for the medium of comics, that's why all the zaniness, heart it has/had and everything else works. (I don't watch the anime so I can't really give opinions on that). Not everything needs to be turned into something else, in my opinion.
Is it cooler to see Luffy punching someone in television than to read it in a page? ehhh. Not really?
Of course someone will bring up marvel and dc but I would argue they are different. Batman works in both mediums.
One Piece is perfect in a comic book. Perfect. A manga somehow holds all that alchemy (looney tunes + mystery box + adventure + drama + fighting + weird art) together. I don't think tv or movies ever will.Sorry, i need to go to yell at some clouds.

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
What the shit are you guys talking about? To this day movie 6 is the only one worth talking about. I'm pretty sure it's the only one with any real artistic merit.
Best villain by far.

@GuetaMinute
there is still hope for loguetown to kick off the second season instead of riding the grand line straightlyif they cut it off entirely including the future project then that's surely unforgivable!
i don't have issues with steven maeda, my problem is with matt owens, he must be sacked after the catastrophic first season
anyone who don't respect the manga and think they can do better than Oda should go somewhere else and create their own thing.
I was probably the biggest skeptic here about this show (I still have many problems with it) but it wasn't a "catastrophe".
The show has great reviews and apparently lots and lots of viewers. It succeeded.

RE: Season 1 General Discussion
Someone show this post to Greg, he has blocked me:
I watched this show with my girlfriend, who has never had any interest to anime or manga (thank heavens), and my god was she was bummed out when it ended. She fell in love with the world and it's characters right away.
So I need to admit I was wrong, I need to eat crow, put a foot in my mouth, however you wanna say it, the show, at least in this household, was a huge success.
I still have my problems with it, Luffy isn't very Luffy-like, that stupid goddamn awful night filter, some Garp stuff, the fishmen are ugly as fuck, but... yeah, it works.
Edit: weirdly they nailed all the other strawhats. Maybe they can fix Luffy's writing in the next season WHICH I HOPE IT GETS.

RE: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
I have been loving the show so far.
I've read lotr a couple of times (four i think?), the hobbit many times and the silmarillion just once (boring as shit) so i'm that kind of dork. And personally, i really don't give a flying fuck if they "change the lore" or whatever.
Rings of power gives me that same fuzzy fantasy feeling the lotr trilogy gives me and personally, for me, that's the most important thing.
I think the mystery man is either a blue wizard or a whole new istari. i think we can't rule out gandalf either.

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
i'm in the "both carrot and hancock are the most boringest bores ever please no more" camp.
since this is simply a very strong cold fact and not in any way based on a feeling or opinion or something please don't argue with me against this point.edit: a very good point if i may add, i have tons of data to back me up, like... so many pages and panels.

Oh man this look cool!
The first movie was fine; I've grown to like it more over time. It's like a Taxi Driver-lite, but it's alright. This movie looks fun and interesting, and both actors apparently are incapable of giving anything less than a great performance in whatever movie they're in. I'm looking forward to it. Making it into a musical is an inspired choice.

RE: What are you excited to see in One Piece that isn't fighting/powerscaling?
I'm most looking forward to 'the big flashback' where we delve into Roger's early career (if that's coming) and seeing Rocks and his crew in action.
And of course, the involvement of the Cross Guild in the final showdown. -

worst chapter so far in egghead
gear 5 proves once again to be the worst thing ever occurred in this manga, ruined Wano and seemingly will doom every arc moving forward.
whether fights or lore. nothing will be spared from this ugly retcon except rare side journeys like Garp invading Hachinosu.
Dorry and Broggy are now joined with Kuma and the rest as worshipers of Luffy. some people are actually into this and love it so much even though Luffy himself dislikes being a hero not alone being a deity or world savior. Poor Luffy he deserved a better gear, a better writing, a better style and first and foremost a better role as a freaking pirate. next chapter will be Nika's special. enjoy the clownfest. I'll be rooting the invisible blackbeards.
I like Kizaru more than ever, what an amazing antagonist. all the admirals are up to my taste except for the green bitch.
Gear 5 actually rules though? it's perfectly suited for Luffy.
It also has the added bonus of seriously bumming out people who want sEriOUsNeSs out of this goofy comic

RE: Western Comics thread
Cool, good that you enjoy it. I liked it when I first read it almost thirty years ago and it took a while to realize how bad it was.
It's still an awful story that had way too much influence on the direction of comics for decades and should not have been part of the canon..Well, I guess agree to disagree then?
For me, it's like Nirvana. A great band that inspired countless incredibly poor copies. The original comic was a fantastic story, but its value should not be diminished by the bad imitations that followed -
RE: Western Comics thread
@Robby said in Western Comics thread:
Alan Moore himself has disowned Killing Joke and says "The Killing Joke is one of the worst things I've ever written." and he hates the effect it and Watchmen (combined with Dark Knight Returns) had on the industry for decades.
It's a fine one off what if but it really shouldn't be heralded as "one of the greatest Batman stories" and it REALLY shouldn't have been folded into the mainline leaving Barbara crippled for decades (even if her Oracle turn was cool.)
I wonder, if it had a lesser artist than Brian Bolland on it, would it have had the same impact?
Well, I herald it as one of the greatest Batman stories but I'm just some guy so maybe I'm allowed to have that opinion.
Dude, Alan Moore, as great as he is (probably my favorite comics person), says the craziest shit! He thinks he's a wizard! He's a batshit lunatic. Awesome fella, I love him, but a total nutjob.

@Nobodyman said in Western Comics thread:
@FatDogForMidTerms Ooh. Well, this might be a bit awkward.
I finished reading Killing Joke for the first time ever and, honestly, didn't really care for it that much.
There are nuggets of a really good story here. The art and atmosphere is, of course, brilliant, and Batman and Joker have some really poignant interactions.
But beyond that, the story seems underdeveloped, misguided and really sleazy. Shooting Barbara was one thing, but stripping her, taking photos of her and then showing them to Gordon (who is also naked for some reason) was just disgusting and exploitative.
I mean, I honestly like the general idea of the Joker's plan. Trying to get Gordon to go insane by subjecting him to the worst day of his life. That's a unique idea that's rife with possibility. Maybe we could have followed Gordon from sunrise to sunset, watching as increasingly terrible things happen to him and see his world unravel around him. It could have started with just minor announces, steadily getting worse and worse, until it culminates with Barbara getting shot. Instead, we just get Barbara being paralyzed and Gordon's carnival ride (most of which we don't even see), which, though that would of course be a horrible thing to go through, just feels like it doesn't amount to much. But I guess my idea would've required a lot more pages to explore.
On that note, and this isn't a criticism against the story since it is what it is, but I never realized Killing Joke was so short. It's just a single issue story.
Oh yeah, and we really didn't need a tragic backstory for the Joker either. The comic itself even seems to try to backpedal on it towards the end.
It was also kind of amusing reading the afterword for the comic as Brian Bolland almost seems apologetic about the whole thing. Though that could just be me projecting.
So yeah. Bit of a letdown for me, but oh well. At least I've crossed this off the ol' to-read list.
Haha, yeah, it's one of those comics that was once considered a classic but is now starting to lose some of that shine. I still love it, though. For my money, it's the best Batman & Joker story. I mean, what Joker does to Barbara is just so brutal and fucked up; I like the extremity of it all. And the ending is just chef's kiss perfect.
It really affected me the first time I read it, and I gained immense respect for Gordon. He didn't break.
