Chapter 1080: The Hero of Legend

Man, did I need a chapter like this badly after how much I disliked 1079. 10/10. Moria is alive, that's good to hear. Finally Sword Info. Tsuru's granddaughter. Possibly a record for most DF's (non-Smiles) introduced in a chapter? GARP! Unfortunately a break next week, but at least it's a 17 page chapter.
-
I'm in love with Hibari.

Pizarro's Really Bad Day

A few thoughts on this chapter, which I hope to send into One Piece Podcast:
It seems to me that the Blackbeard Pirates' Devil Fruit, excluding the ones who already had them like Lafitte and Kuzan, seem designed to enhance what they're already very good at. Strength for Burgess, teleportation for Van Augur the sniper, diseases for Doc Q, gigantification for Wolf, liquor for Vasco Shot.
Thinking about this reminded me of one detail that's always stuck in my mind about Blackbeard: He was the first character we ever saw explicitly hunting a specific Devil Fruit. Everyone else up to that point we either don't know how they got it or it was an accident. Makes me wonder how long he had this plan of his in place to power up his people with Devil Fruits the same way Kaido wanted his army of Zoans.
One last point on the Blackbeard pirates (this was mentioned in the spoiler thread), back in chapter 803 there was a discussion between Dragon and Koala about weapons made of "Drunken Iron Ore", which only a few places could produce. Now we learn Blackbeard has a literal booze man. There's a possible connecting line being drawn there.
Also, the way Garp's ship launched itself into Fullalead, the Thousand Sunny won't be able to escape them with Coup de Burst now.
Thinking about the reveal of SWORD as the Navy's "Mission: Impossible" unit, I wonder now if Kuzan isn't playing a long game. I expect that's already a theory, but now I wonder if we might not get a reveal that Kuzan won the duel that terraformed Punk Hazard, gave Sakazuki the Fleet Admiral position anyway, and leveraged that into Sakazuki's support/cooperation with his own plan, which might be why Sakazuki has had to play desk jockey, he's honor bound to not go whole hog and run things like Kuzan would. There's also the possibility that both were in on it from the get-go, the entire duel was a sham, and the entire goal was to give Kuzan a way to leave the Navy in spectacular fashion. Sakazuki has been obeying the true Fleet Admiral all along.
-
The Island fruit really sounds like Pica's but better and I really dislike when Oda does that (one of the things I disliked about Dressrosa), but man, Pizarro does it so much better. The talking giant skull was great.
Him and Vasco gained tons of points with me this chapter (even more after I realized Vasco was riding SJW's snot bubble instead of one made by his DF). Really want to see more of those two if next chapter is still focusing on Fullalead. Also, Rosinante was definitely a former Sword, right?
-
It seems Hibari already fell in love with Coby. Her speech style is the same as Akainu in this chapter as well. If my theory of Hibari being his daughter months ago turns out to be true, would Akainu get mad or..?
BTW, Coby talks politely even with Blackbeard.
Aokiji's speech style to Blackbeard is just neutral, not particularly super-casual nor polite. He talks to BB like when talking to Smoker and Luffy. Aokiji's speech sounds more polite when talking to Garp, his mentor. What did Coby think when he saw Aokiji explaining about Sword to Blackbeard? Unwavering trust, or despair? Garp was a monster beyond imagination. As seen in Galaxy Impact and Meteor Shower Fists, the cosmic-scale technique name might tell us how Garp as a human is great
Oda (2018): About spin-off, I came up with a magnificent story about Garp. I'd like to draw his relationship and talk with Akainu, Aokiji, Smoker, Hina, Coby, Cipher Pol and Roger. Other than that, Revolutionary Army spin-off focusing on Dragon would be interesting and serious.

I really like your theory here. A recurring theme with Sakazuki since the timeskip is how annoyed he is with just sitting behind his desk, and seemingly being unable to do what he wants to do. It could be he is being handcuffed by the Five Elders, but as we have seen, he has no fear to go marching into the Room of Authority and yell their ears off.
Maybe Kuzan really did win, and has been undercover this whole time, fully understanding the threat that Blackbeard poses, and needing someone on the inside.

This was my thought too. If X-Drake has been a member of SWORD since his introduction, then the existence of SWORD predates the time skip. It would also further explain why Rosinate's death was reported to Sengoku as being the death of a Donquixote officer if undercover SWORD missions are made classified to everyone outside of a few select individuals, given the similarities between Rosinate and X-Drake's circumstances.
-
Akainu has a sword tatoo on his shoulder, which might mean he wants to support Sword more than anyone else in his heart... I love Akainu as a character.
-
It feels to me like this is going to be Garp's redemption story: The premise is similar to Marineford, one character gets captured by an overwhelmingly powerful force, an old legend comes to their rescue because they have a mentor/pupil or father/son relationship and believe the captive to be the future.
All this probably means that Garp is going to die but it would be a great end for him.

No, because he still had his Marine code. He stated it to Doflamingo before dying.

What you describe is definitely more likely to happen than not, but I don't know how that would redeem him - in fact it actually makes it worse as things stand right now.
Acting against Pirates and protecting a Marine is not something he would have to overcome after all, there is no inner conflict to battle, no opportunity to show how he learned from his (in)action during Marineford. But maybe these events will lead to such an opportunity, like Koby being threatened by the WG/Akainu because he's responsible for causing an issue so big that it demands punishment, even if he's SWORD.
-
I like how Hibari manages to be badass even though she has a heart strap and a teddy bear.
-
Does Garp really need a redeeming arc, though? Granted I think he was pretty hypocritical by being pissed at Sakazuki when he carried on the execution when Garp himself was one of those working for it to happen, but was he wrong for not betraying the Marines and his own values for Ace?
I think what he really needs is for Oda to show us what really makes Garp such a diligent Marine even though he can see the wrongs in the WG. Show us why he still has such a strong belief that this is the right side to be on, so we might stop seeing him as wrong for sticking to the ideals he protected his entire life (instead of betraying them for a criminal just because it was one he personally cared for). But, yeah, I definitely think he will pull a Newgate here. Except Oda will be more generous with him and allow Koby to be saved after his sacrifice.

Oda did a drawing of him as a kid, and he looked more like a future pirate than a military man so I believe someone changed that.
May not sound very original, but Garp is simple-minded like Luffy so I doubt there's any complex reason behind his faith in the marine in spite of his disgust for celestial dragons. -
@access-timeco said in Chapter 1080: The Hero of Legend:

I don't know if he needs one, personally I'm fine with him being haunted by his decision to let Ace die simply because he was Roger's son.
I'm just saying that saving Koby, who's the hero of the Marines and probably everything Garp wanted Luffy and Ace to become, does nothing to address the guilt he feels for what happened during Marineford. It just doubles down on it, Koby chose the "correct" path and thus deserves his sacrifice.
I would accept it, but I don't know if that's a very satisfying conclusion (but at least it would be consequent)
-
Maybe there's other powerful prisoners locked up with Gecko Moria, and Koby can give Black Beard a taste of his own medicine by releasing them all
A reverse Impeldown
Hopefully Wang Zhi is there
I’ve really wanted to see him since they mentioned him as one of the main Rocks Pirates and also since we found out Black Beard had to overthrow him as ruler of Hachinosu
-
An observation: I am wondering how a girl dressing head to toe in a large goth lolita dress is managing to sneak around the island, but then again this island is full of drunken idiots. Perona probably didn't need to do much.
That said, as awesome as Garp's island wrecking punch is, it always guarantees that the 4 or so people who weren't fighting because of that are going to join the fight. Now, I hate, hate, hate that we're switching the focus away from Egghead, but I have to admit I like this encounter a lot better than the one with Shanks (and for all it's flaws, that was still decent). We get to see what the Blackbeard pirates can do, and frankly I'm not sure how this'll go down. A lot of people are predicting Garp's death, but I'm not sure if S.W.O.R.D should take a loss in it's first outing. Yes, individual members can lose, and I don't expect them to beat this group of Blackbeard Pirates, but maybe they can escape safely? I don't know, but I want to see how this plays out.
I'm going to be pissed if this switches to Egghead before finishing.
-
I just want to know if Grus’ power is the same power shown by Elmy in chapter 561
-
I feel this scene will be continued in Ch 1081. This chapter didn't end in a good cutoff point.
So, I guess it's going to be continued until the marines clash with the Blackbeard pirates on the island, or maybe until Teach appears (maybe his ship is returning after the battle against Law, so it leaves in a more ominous moment. It could even spill into 1082 before it's cutoff.
I also hope there's more marines in Garp's ship. I was hoping for a "Garp's Eleven" team earlier this year, to show case several known marines, it's interesting that most of the current known ones were in my prediction/wishful thinking. I had not accounted just Grus and Kujaku.
So, I hope Smoker and Hina (plus Jango and Fullbody) are in it as well!
-
You gotta wonder if Garp had his ship fitted with a propulsion system after being inspired by the Sunny at Water 7.
-
1 reader request of Wano characters and I'm already sick of them.
Much like last chapter, we're hyping up an old gen legend who doesn't really need it and not getting to the characters that we actually need to see show off a bit. I couldn't care less about what Garp can do, and my hopes are this is just a quick display of respect before Garp goes down swinging as the hero protecting the younger marines as they leave. There's just no other value to a character like Garp in the story, so he really needs to show us the consequences of Sword and die here to let the Blackbeard Titans gain some points. Seriously, what's next? Do we need to see Mihawk beat Fujitora or Aramaki to finally see his full display of power? Or Sengoku?
However, compared to the obnoxious Shanks wank, it's done a lot better here. Finally we get to see Coby's peers in what will be the "New Generation" that will be there to help "fix" the Marines/WG once everything is finished. Fun young group that really should've been revealed ages ago, but it is what it is. Shame Coby and Helmeppo didn't get a moment too, but maybe that'll happen next. A good little group of characters that'll be there for end game, but probably don't need to do much more than fight in the background. And that's really all we need from Sword. Sword aren't gonna be characters that have serious fights or stand as serious roadblocks with the main characters anymore, so good to just have them around as extras.
Loving to see more of the Blackbeards and finally seeing what must be their real final outfit/designs and powers. Looks like all of Blackbeard's questionable post-timeskip plans can amount to him really not caring whether they succeed or not. Teach gets an idea, and he follows through just to see how it goes. Really hope we get to see these guys in action now that Garp went ahead and destroyed the town for them. I want to see some full-scale dirty BB pirate fighting and wipe that cocky smirk off Garp's face.
It's very, very strange to give us just the 1 quick flashback panel of Perona starting the breakout, but not follow up with a single panel of Moria. Are these 2 just escaping a different way?
By process of elimination, as many have already said, this should mean at least Lafitte and Catarina are on the ship at egghead. This should be a perfect fun addition. Hypnotism or Perfect illusion disguise to steal some Seraphim, pacifista, or even recruit York? Sounds great to me. As much as I want to get back to that drama, I do also want to see another chapter of hopefully the blackbeard's counterattack.
-
@Deicide I hope you’re right about continuing the fights on Hachinosu next chapter
I really want to see how the Ten Titanic Captains fight, especially Vasco Shot, since I’m lost at what he can do
Also what is Garp’s 11?
-
@Shiebs I fairly confident the Hachinosu/Fullalead scene will continue for at least next chapter. May end before its end, or take the entire chapter, or even reach 1081, but I don't think it's over already.
As for "Garp's Eleven", it's a prediction/wishful thinking I posted in my OP Twitter. The name is a play on "Ocean's Eleven", a film (and a remake with George Clooney as the lead), in which a guy named Danny Ocean gathers 10 extraordinary people to execute a great heist. I found "11" fitting because that's the number of known Blackbeard Pirates.
The base idea is that Garp wasn't going alone to rescue Koby, he has gathered a team of extraordinary marines to help him, and those would come from known characters.
In my prediction, I guessed the team, besides Garp, could have names like Bogard, Hibari, Helmeppo, Drake, Tsuru, Smoker, Tashigi, Hina, Fullbody and Jango.
Those don't need to be the real team, the main idea is that there would be an interesting group of sympathetic marines, and we kinda got that.
It's interesting that so far we got Hibari, Helmeppo and Tashigi. Grus can be seen as a counterpart to Drake (both SWORD and rear admirals), and Kujaku, to Tsuru (the former being granddaughter of the later).
Since I think the scene will continue, there's a big chance of more marines appearing. I feel someone made the ship fly, for instance, and that will be answered soon.
As for the other names I guessed:
Bogard is Garp's right-hand swordsman. We haven't seen him since Water 7, but he totally could be there.
With Tashigi there, there's the chance of Smoker as well.
And Garp showed some closeness to Hina just before Wano, so if he could drag her along, Jango and Fullbody would come as well.
-
Nonzero chance Garp tries some cherry pie in Fullalead and declares that it tastes like shit.
-
@Deicide this is a really cool idea, I’d love to see it happen
Smoker, Hina, Doll and X drake would be great!
That being said I think X Drake may actually be dead (I hope I’m wrong on that)
Anyways they showed of the good guys team work this chapter maybe we’ll get to see Shiryu, Avalo Pizarro, Vasco Shot and San Juan Wolf show off what they can do next chapter
Also I’m still hoping for Koby to release other prisoners along with Gecko Moria, hopefully Wang Zhi is there also, do a reverse Impeldown and give Black Beard a taste of his own medicine

-
@Shiebs Doll was shown leaving for Egghead, so I doubt she will appear with Garp.
As for Drake, I'd love to see him there as well, since he was Koby's contact, but after this chapter I think it won't happen. I doubt he's dead. Drake's last appearance works as Hawkins' death scene but not Drake's. Maybe he's imprisoned in Wano and will appear in a Yamato cover story that we could get next?
-
@Deicide maybe Yamato will make a new beast pirates (like Katakuri will carry on the Big Mom Pirates of a new generation) and X Drake will join Yamato
-
@Shiebs I think a lot of Yamato's early cover story would evolve around him facing the remaining threats on Wano, like rogue Beasts Pirates (Gifter bandits, Ulti and Page One, the Numbers, meeting with Fuga again...) as well as pirate and/or marine invaders. I could see it leading into Yamato forming a crew, thought I'm not sure if that's where the story would lead.
-
@Deicide idk I just think Oda is setting up a next generation, Katakuri will be the next big mom, Yamato the next Kaido and maybe Uta as the next Shanks (that one’s unlikely) plus obviously Kidd, Law and the rest of the worst generation
-
We are really spending some time away from the main plot of the arc here, aren't we? I was talking after the last chapter about how weird it is structurally, and getting this whole other full chapter with nothing to do with the Strawhats while they're all fighting makes it weirder still. But when this is what we get outside the main plot I'm sure as hell not complaining. The longer this goes on though, the more I'm wondering if we'll switch back to Egghead exactly where it left off, or if things are going to have continued developing while we weren't looking at them.
Blackbeard's pirate island feels like an appropriately chaotic Nassau or Tortuga of the One Piece world, now that we're seeing a tad more of it. Like Jaya amped up to a hundred, which is fitting, given that it's where we first met the guy. I'm definitely in the camp that's a tad skeptical of his crew's new powers though. I think I wrote when the first lot were revealed, back during the start of Law's fight, that they felt like abilities Oda had decided on early in the series and stuck to his guns on, even as Devil Fruits got more and more abstract and extreme. Pizarro having such an obvious copy of Pica's power feels especially egregious. I can only hope that having all that time to brew means that the final battles against these powers are going to be next level.
Now, I'm not one to speculate too hard on battle matchups, but it seems to me you could make a case for Zoro being pitted against a number of Blackbeard Pirates. Shiryu because he normally fights a swordsman (though that one's got a fruit that would draw Sanji's ire), Burgess because he usually fights the captain's apparent right hand, and now - I think - it would be interesting to see him as the crew's heaviest and most regular drinker pitted against Vasco Shot. It could be another "natural enemy" situation. Shot uses his booze-related powers to try and throw Zoro's swordsmanship off, Zoro declares that he was already drunk. Cue Enel face.
What really has my attention is Blacbkeard trying to make Fullalead into a legitimised nation. I can only guess that it's a scheme to gain access to Mariejoa at a Reverie or something, the same way he used the Warlord title to access Impel Down. It feels unlikely the Government would fall for it twice, especially given his current reputation. But then again, Shanks shows us that it's not out of the question for an Emperor of the Sea to get in one way or another.
Interesting that SWORD basically gets to operate as Schrodinger's Marines, both in and out of the Navy as the Government's politics require. I can see where the idea came from, offering Marine resources to these kinds of hotheads to keep them close and useful for as long as possible without restricting them so much they just go off on their own as vigilantes, while being able to instantly absolve all responsibility for their actions when it's convenient. Whether this would actually be a good or smart system to implement in a real military remains in doubt. You'd have to keep it relatively secret and invite-only to avoid the name being thrown around to excuse premeditated insubordination and desertion. Can't have the rank and file thinking that's an option. And whether it's in-character for Sakazuki to accept this kind of insubordination, even if it is planned for, is equally questionable.
Curiously, Kuzan is fully knowledgeable of it. Which could mean SWORD predates Sakazuki's instatement as Fleet Admiral. Or it could mean that Kuzan still has contacts feeding him intel. Or it's just because he's a part of it.
We also, early on, get to see a Cross Guild bounty poster closer up. Hope we get more of these while the series has time to do it, but given that the bounties seem to be based mostly on rank (with exceptions for popular figures) there isn't the same hype and mystery as the pirate posters. I also appreciate that the rewards are in treasure chests with only an approximate value - it adds a roughness in contrast to the Government's precise figures. I wonder, though, if the Cross Guild members borrowed their star-based bounty system from a certain former co-worker...?
We actually saw already a small, sketchy previuew of the posters in Cross Guild's introductory chapter, although there seems to be at least one other symbol also being used there. Potentially a crown or a set of big top tents like Buggy's base. But what does that mean? Something beyond the star rankings, or maybe something less, for ranks below Captain.
And a final thing from early in the chapter, Pizarro implies that Rocky Port is part of Fullalead. And we know that the Rocky Port Incident was masterminded by Law and kept from being a complete disaster by the hero Koby. I know that the Supernovas and plenty of others swept into the New World right after Marineford instead of taking time to train like the Strawhats, but there's something genuinely strange to me about learning how far ahead of Luffy's group they've all been already. Like, it would make no sense for Law to have just waited around Punk Hazard for two years, but it never crossed my mind while he was travelling with the crew that he might have been on his second or third lap of the New World already.
Perona's cameo is a welcome surprise, I'm a pretty big fan of her character. Weird that the chapter doesn't make it clear if Koby was actually able to follow through and free Moria though. I guess he wanted to find his own escape route and Perona went with him.
The G-14 Marines and new SWORD additions continue to be appealing designs with some interesting new powers to go with them. And it's cool to see Vegapunk's GP Flowers making a main story appearance as well. What was it I wrote during the cover story? They seem more like a weapon of sabotage than a true tool of peace, and that is exactly how the government is using them. I wonder if that sours the Mobel Prize somewhat.
And then there's Garp. This old guy is actually one of my favourite One Piece characters. The conflict he feels between his career and his adopted family is genuine, and while I'm generally critical of the morality of characters who make themselves complicit in the World Government's evil, Garp carries enough clout to make genuine efforts to follow his heart over his orders and speak out against the worst of his superiors. He's still contributing to a very evil organisation, but it helps his case a ton. He's layered, his conflicts are believable, and you just can't help liking the way he flies in on his dog-themed ship (with cute little doghouse crows nests, how charming) and levels half the town from above. Brilliant moment to end a chapter on, and the panel of his ship flying over the city is gorgeously drawn.
Despite how long we've spent away from Egghead already, I don't think this sequence is quite done yet. Maybe another half chapter to tie up loose ends (like where Moria and Perona ended up, and if Smoker is there alongside Tashigi, and if Boggard is still at Garp's right hand) and set up a real cliffhanger of Garp and co clashing directly with the Blackbeard pirates before cutting away. And then we can get back to what the Strawhats are up to. Or hell, why not another cutaway? Still haven't seen Dragon's powers, since we're apparently revealing all the heavyweight players right now. The breaks around this Golden Week time of year can be rough, but it's hard to be too upset when we're getting chapters like these.
-
@RomanceDawn I can't see anything on the back of his ship that could have done it in the flying panel. My headcanon is that he just stood on the stern and thrown a really big punch to launch it all in the opposite direction. Inspired by the Sunny, of course, just a bit more hands-on.
-
Garp picked up the ship, threw at in the general direction of Fullalead, and then jumped on it while it was flying, like Tao Pai Pai.
-
Unsure if this has been pointed out, but if you look close at the flying panel you can see the gouges in the ground from Kujaku moving those buildings.
Can't overstate how much I love that kind of attention to detail!

Dunno, it is nice to see other people like Hiyori more so than Judge and Caesar, so alright in my book. :)

Wow! That's a great way to state the most polar opposite of what Yamato wants!
-
Galaxy impact reminds me a lot of King Punch as they work as a projectile
and they're both punches except only one can flatten a yonko.
-
@hideoushorrendous said in Chapter 1080: The Hero of Legend:

I agree that King Punch and Galaxy Impact are very similar.
For some time I've been considering Elizabelo actually has conqueror haki. The visual of King Punch even has the black lightning effects!
However, Elizabelo's attack requires him to charge it for an hour. Maybe he's not fully aware of what he's doing. It may be draining all his haki, kinda like Gear 4th, but all of it is spent in one single attack, which is why it's so powerful for a character that isn't top-tier.
-
Imagine if Luffy learned Galaxy Punch and mixed it with Gomu Gomu abilities
-
So we all remember that Prince Gruz and his squad, including the newly named Kujaku made early cameos in Bege's cover story, but it's easy to forget that that was far enough back that the colour manga has covered it already.
Not often we get official colours for characters too minor for a volume cover this long before the anime gets near them.
-
It's funny how the crew of unhinged psychopaths all settled on fairly simple and practical Devil Fruits.
-
If Garp does die here, it's going to be pretty ironic that A. the Hero of the Marines died on Pirate Island, and B. that he was killed by the heir to the guy he killed to get said title.
-
@Johnny-B-Decent Also because he killed when trying to save his protege, another marines hero.
-
lol is that transparent shiryu?
-
@BlackbeardPirates
Seems like that. So Shiryu is just a shy guy, and that's why he got the Suke Suke no Mi... -
Maybe they don't trust aokiji yet and shiryu stays invisible to observe his every move. Even more since one of his former marine friends is there and could release him when they don't pay attention.
