Chapter 1085: The Death of Nefeltari Cobra
-
-
OK, so the bird figure is probably a Garuda, and the bald guy is probably like a Deva. Are there bull and elephant deities in Buddhism?
No clue what the fifth figure is supposed to be. A Preta, maybe?
-
Garuda is mainly Hindi but there is a Hindi elephant god.
If one is meant to be a Ptera, feels like Oda would have gone all out with the Six Paths and I don't know enough about Buddhism to feel if any of the others fit, given their vagueness.
-
While I enjoyed the chapter, Cobra's death scene was executed badly. Oda probably didn't want to show how exactly the Gorosei killed him but he should have absolutely showed his death on-screen.
-
Unless Cobra isn't actually dead. It's hard to make out if he actually smiled.
-

Don't think it matters. Marines have been looking at things for a month now and they all refer to him as deceased, so they must have a body.
-
Biggest mystery of the chapter is how Fujitora is able to keep his job.
-
I suspect he is dead (doubt Oda would lie in a chapter title), but... the navy could have simply been told so by the WG higher ups and never seen a corpse. The marines after all think that Sabo killed Cobra, so they're clearly being kept in the dark about some things. It just wouldn't surprise me if Cobra was taken prisoner.
-
Disability Act.
-
-
This chapter ruled out the “Imu is Lily” hypothesis. So, what happened to Lily? Erased…? Or formed a new tribe…?
-
The Elders and Imu reveals were ominous, but not particularly impressive. Sabo still managed to both surprise them and escape a 1v6. It didn't particularly made them any more fearsome than admirals, for instance. Of course, this may have happened for plot convenience, just like Vivi and Wapol escaping CP-0. We all know Jabra or Kalifa could easily outspeed Wapol... Still, not a very impressive first outing for the Elders, IMO.
-
Guessing, from left to right:
- Saturn - Demon zoan, tail striked Cobra
- Bland Blonde - Logia (acid?)
- Blade Ghandi - Mythic human zoan
- Longbeard Granpa - Gryphon or cockatrice zoan
- Mustache Gorbachev - Mythic pig/boar zoan?
- When I think about Imu's power, he seems some sort of dragon-like being, more like the western dragons than the eastern ones. There's one more reason for me to think it may be a western dragon: when we go back to Punk Hazard, Brownbeard said about Dragon Number 13 that "the Celestial Dragons liked it so much, they gave it a name... which I forgot".
- Back to the main reveal, Cobra's message was that by finding the truth he finally knew which way Alabasta should follow. Vivi's meant to be queen to lead the country to the Dawn. This makes me think Vivi is not the 11th Straw Hat. She's nakama, of course, but her role is special, like Momonosuke.
- With both Vivi and Sabo back in the spotlight, can't stop thinking about Oda's words way back in 2019...
“Sabo will…”
“Vivi will…”
“Hancock will…”
Can’t wait to return to Egghead!
-
-
Randomly decided to make a low-effort overview of where we've been to in this arc, as in which chapter roughly covers which locations/scenes/plotlines.
Guess we actually haven't been away from Egghead as long as it feels like we have (though ofc a better analysis would be panel-time percentage etc.)
Anyway, I've come to accept the cutaways and still enjoy the ride, though I do need a recap every now and then.

Since she's on the run, Vivi's not returning anytime soon. She has to learn what exactly entailed in the Void Century to be able to return to her country safely, which could very well be post-final war. And I assume Sabo will need to reunite her with Luffy for convenience, so he can tell both of them about Cobra.
It's convenient that all the relevant Arabasta soldiers are still in Mary Geoise too, so there's no need to involve the actual country.
In the end, she has the same issue of Hancock in that she has nowhere to go really. And since Luffy was already interested in going after her...
-
So how are people feeling about the revelation that Vivi has a D?
-
@electricmastro It makes a lot of sense within the context of the Alabasta arc. It's now clear why there was a Poneglyph there in the first place, but it was also the conclusion for the saga that introduced us to the notion of the "D" meaning something special. Cobra's reaction to Robin reading the Poneglyph became a lot more understandable.

Kureha mentioned the Will of D, which makes me wonder how she found out about it.
But would you suggest that any place that has had a poneglyph for hundreds of years might have Will of D. members involved? In that case, I’d suppose someone at Skypiea, Fish-Man Island, Zou, and Wano have them that we never found out about beforehand.
-
we've never seen someone fights while still being under silhouette !! this is ridiculous
just unveil this old bitch already
her ability is a mess, nothing makes sense just like karasu with his soot bullshit
first she turned into a monster that swallowed sabo's flame then it appears to me that she turned the elders into monsters as well
i think that what happen, it's highly unlikely that each geezer is a mythical zoan user, very low probability
the retcon of arabasta was disgusting, it makes zero sense that a dynasty that holds the D name is part of WG or even old allies in the war against the poeple of D
anyways i hope this flashback continues, we need to know Dragon's thoughts on all of this and how far the secret will spread now that sabo is alive
everything that happens outside the strawhats is always fire.
-
Me watching you post
-
If I could send one message to my past self it would be:
"Wapol will end up eloping with Vivi. He's going to carry her around in his mouth with Jabra narrating the entire scene - tell everyone!"
-
The setup for Hancock and Vivi are actually very different. Cobra says in this chapter that he finally know twhat direction Alabasta must follow, so it falls to Vivi the burden to take the country in that direction. That requires her to assume her role as queen.
Vivi is in an unique position to be the one to bring other kings to revolt against the World Government. I don't see anyone but her having that role.
I'm sure Vivi will meet the Straw Hats again. She will be in the ship for a while. But I don't think her role is the same as the 11th crewmate's, nor that she will fulfill that role while in the ship.

I think Imu and Gorosei couldn't go all out because it would have destroyed the castle and exposed them to public.
-
-
Now imagine Morgans ends up reporting to the world about I’m and the weapons after Wapol and Caribou tell him. Truly all hell would break loose because of the DJ reporter.
-
@auem Even if they had to hide Imu, it would still be a 5v1.
There are also other things, like they were surprised by Sabo when we know things like Future Sight exist.
Or how 6 fighters of supposedly top-tier speed couldn't block Sabo's way.
Anyway, it may be just that they were nerfed for story reasons, but this scene as a whole didn't seem to want me to think these guys are all on par with Admirals or Emperors in strength or speed.
-
My theory on the D.:
After defeating the Ancient Kingdom (be it for good or bad reasons) the alliance of 20 kings started to call themselves gods. A group of people, including Lilly, decided to oppose them, and started calling themselves Devils (the enemy of God). All around the world they identified themselves by the secret initial to mark them as part of the “resistance” to the celestiais.
That’s what Cobra meant: we are also opposed to them. We can also call ourselves devils. -

More than why Morgan decided to photograph Sabo and Cobra rather than Imu and the 5 elders tranformed into monsters ? :-)
-
@Kdom What makes you think that cam snail is Morgan's and not from the castle's security?
-
It is the photo used by Morgan to make his article. I really doubt it is the security. Why would they even take pictures. I doubt Ilu wants camera in this room
-
Dang you Oda and your ambiguous silhouettes!
Kinda disappointed the Elders aren't just badass old men (Unless that was all Imu's doing), but interested in seeing what their monster forms really look like. -
@Kdom I find it more likely that the government provided the picture to Morgan in order to cover the story, or else I'm pretty sure it would have assassinated Morgans the moment he had an illegal picture of the Empty Throne room, as it would be pretty clear he's spying on very sensitive stuff.
I now wonder which story the Government was trying to cover. If they provided the photo to incriminate Sabo, then it must be some other story and for whatever reason.
-
The gouvernement didn't knownSabo was in the room.
-
@Kdom A security camera wouldn't need to wait for a specific reason to be there, it's there just in case.
What's more believable, that the government would have security measures that can see activity in one of its most important sites, or that it would be fine with Morgans have a spying camera in that place?
Also, what's more likely, that Morgans got the photo incriminating Sabo from the government, or that he saw the Gorousei transform, kill Cobra and fight Sabo, and then chose to not publish the greatest story he had in his hands?
-
I've seen some people speculate about being able to get the D. from someone else instead of it being just hereditary based on the flashback in this chapter where Ace says it to Sabo, and maybe I'm reading it wrong but it seems to me like Ace was just joking?
-
As if Ace knew anything about it... he was a kid. Obviously, it's a joke...
-
The "Sa D. Bo" JOKE was one the chapter's highlights, that anyone would take it seriously is SA D.

The Den Den Mushi are mobile cameras. It's entirely possible one got into the room.

I would imagine the Den-Dens are in the throne room to watch for someone like Stelly fucking around.

Nope, some of their servants know about them...
-
Well, here's what we've actually been waiting for with this flashback. The previous 2 chapters are mostly just filler of stuff we already knew, but this one at least felt worth it to see and finally get a little hype out of the top CD dogs.
Everything Cobra is definitely awesome in this chapter. The situation truly was hopeless for him and the chapter does a great job of conveying that. I wish he had something more impressive when he "stalled" the Elders so Sabo could escape though. Guy could've pulled a Pedro and threatened to blow himself up or something.
Everything Wapol at the end was also hilarious and awesome. Oda has a knack for letting the screw ups stumble their way into getting involved with matters way above their ability. I love the cut to cp9 gang just on babysitting duty. Lucci and Kaku seem to be the only 2 that actually take their new cp0 job seriously, while the rest just goof off and do the bare minimum. Vivi escaping with this gang feels fine.
Sabo's parts of the chapter feel a bit sloppy though. While the images of the monsters of the Elders and Im are lovely, as well as the pure menace you can feel off the one where Sabo flees, it just feels... lacking. Anything and everything that would've happened in this room would've been blamed on Sabo, so why couldn't you show blasts and attacks coming from the Elders/Im and Sabo taking way more damage? It doesn't really feel like this was a desperate and drastic escape when the only attack was the tail attack. Destroy the room a bit. Show off that the Elders defended themselves against the evil revolutionary assassin that killed Cobra.
With this finally done, we should head back and get a few words from Dragon on what they're gonna do next. Then everything should be covered nicely with time to finish the chapter back in Egghead. Or we can go back to Garp and finish up things there. Or Oda can give us updates on Fujitora, Bege, Apoo, or Urouge too.

Is the camera as ridiculous as the wall hole being there?

@Kdom The camera angle was pointed to the room, not the throne.
Besides, Imu has servants that know of his existence, as @Zhenja pointed out. The people responsible for the camera feed may be directly under Imu.

Ch 1086 predictions:
- Flashback ends. Small epilogue with Sabo finishing his exposition. Dragon says something about it.
- Back to Fullalead, the situation has gone south with the Blackbeard Pirates attacking the marines
- We get to see Blackbeard Pirates fighting.
Ch 1086 is likely Volume 107's ender, so it may have a pretty big cliffhanger. However, it's not impossible for V107 to have 11 chapters, thus its ender may be Ch 1087 instead. Whatever the case, I think we go back to Egghead at the end of 1087.

isnt he being chase for publishing the nika photo?
-
@desa No, because it was a mistake from the government. Guernica sent the photo to the marines, who then sent it for publishing. When the Elders found out, they ordered the withdrawal of the posters, but by then Morgans just played dumb.
But it seems Morgans is trying to appease the government a bit with the Egghead incident, maybe because he has pissed the Elder off a bit too much lately (he had also refused to not publish some certain story in Ch 956. I always thought it was Cobra's death, but it feels like it may have been something else).
-
@electricmastro Well, at the least it's endgame relevance to have Vivi eventually reunite with Luffy and the others.

I understand that people who have the Will of D. tend to have qualities that compel others to be drawn towards them. I can see Vivi meeting up with the Straw Hats again, but also kingdoms that would be willing to ally with her in light of her dad the king having been assassinated by the king of the world.
One thing's for certain: Vivi has a lot going for her after this
-
What a chapter to come back from the break on, this is huge. And we're not even at the end of volume 107 yet, so what could possibly top this next week?
The Void Century and founding of the World Government continue to be teased in drips and drops, more implication than explicit detail, everything carefully worded. Cobra's unfinished sentence certainly implies that Imu is one of the WG's twenty founding monarchs, but I could see it being finished 'among the first twenty there was a servant' or 'an advisor,' or 'a concubine,' or any number of other things that sidestep questions like whether Imu has descendants among the Celestial Dragon families, and if they favour them, or if not why the rundowns of the family lines of the gods given by the likes of Dofamingo wouldn't snidely question why there are only eighteen family names in the mix when it should only have dropped to nineteen with the Nefeltari's rejection. We haven't ruled out the possibility of Imu being someone who connived to gain power rather than one of the original kings who somehow managed to prop themselves up in the ultimate position without arousing the suspicion of the others.
What this does seem to deconfirm is the idea of Imu as some alien or literal demon or other secret otherworldly force that manipulated the founding monarchs. I'll be very surprised if Imu isn't one of the native peoples of One Piece's world, for them to have been among the founders openly enough that the name survived in a history book.
But we do get two confirmations of things that were only at 99.9% certainty previously. First, the D Clan being enemies of the World Government. Yes, this was made obvious by nobles treating them like monsters to scare their kids and spelled out further when the Ds were called natural enemies of the gods, putting them at odds with the Celestial Dragons' self-styling. But now we have a primary source stating outright that yes, the Ds and the World Government fought as enemies. (This will shortly be muddied by the revelation that there was a D among the Government's founders, but hey the reasons for that are just one more thing to look forward to finding out.) And we're also told that the real meaning of the D is not passed down alongside the initial and the current people with it don't know the truth. Of course, Law's mission to investigate the D through the Poneglyphs made this more or less guaranteed anyway but now the figure who would know is saying it.
What does fascinate me though, is learning that the Poneglyphs were scattered across the world in a single incident. Previously, my guess would have been they were entrusted to allies of the Ancient Kingdom and hidden away individually as some kind of failsafe, but instead the World Government seemingly had the opportunity to suppress them all at once and failed. The kind of power it would take to shift all 30 stones to precise locations (remembering that some are supposed to give directions to others, so their destinations would have been incredibly specific) at once is a rare thing, even in One Piece's world. Maybe an ancient user of the Paw Paw Fruit?
Whatever the method, Lily's motive for letting them go will be an interesting factor in the inevitable Void Century flashback.
I was very surprised to see the Five Elders draw weapons on Cobra (let alone transform). I was strongly in the camp that saw them as pure politicians rather than combatants. But maybe I should have seen the tide turning in the last chapter, with the discussion about guards disappearing. Someone close enough to be in on the Imu secret has to have the power to suppress and dispose of the guards elite enough to be trusted with Pangea Castle.
The Nefeltaris as a D clan is huge. What else can you really say about it? Vivi's position as a central figure to the final saga is all but confirmed by this.
And then there's the transformations. Hey, I thought it was the party not in power that was meant to form a shadow cabinet! I don't think there's enough information to make strong guesses about the Elders' powers save for one, who I'll get to in a moment, although there are some interesting theories going around already. I wouldn't even say it's certain that they're all Zoan types. Karasu has just been showing us how animalistic a Logia can get, let alone the limitless possibilities of Paramythias. But I want to zero in on one guy with a few factors lining up. The arrow that pierces Cobra sure looks like a traditional devil tail. And it comes in from his left side, not directly ahead, so I don't think it's Imu's. When the Elders transform, the silhouette furthest to the left has some pretty distinctive horns. Maybe this is the Human Human Fruit, Model: Devil. And for a bonus, the Elder standing in that position before transforming was Saturn, who is en route to meet the Strawhats in the present, so we might get confirmation on this one sooner rather than later.
That said, the second arrow attack as Sabo and Cobra flee seems to come from a silhouette without horns, either the Elder second from the left or Imu himself. But that might just be a quirk how the scene is framed.
I can see some people bothered by the convenience of a transponder snail recording during such a top secret meeting to get Sabo's picture, but we saw in the last chapter Imu in their secret room listening to the conversation live through a snail, so it's probably just that one.
The little Sa D. Bo flashback is a funny one. Never expected Oda to pay homage to that brand of fandom meme so explictly. I'm torn between arguing that it's just a gag and Sabo doesn't really have a D, and arguing that in a series that has leaned so heavily on themes of inherited will and found family that it could be as easy as someone with the will saying so to pass it onto a new bloodline. It would definitely help the idea that not all Ds are related. This does raise the question of Sabo's family name though. Being a noble, he has to have one. Even if he gave it up upon running away like Sanji did with the Vinsmoke name, shouldn't we have learned it through Stelly? This might be good SBS fodder.
Cobra makes a hell of an exit, dropping lore bombs to the last. I'm surprised we don't get the near-obligate panel of the D facing death with a smile this time around. Maybe it's just less of a rule than we were led to believe, or maybe there's a little more to see before we're done with this.
While I love Wapol's return to relevance, I'm actually somewhat surprised to see him landing in this position. If anyone was foreshadowed to creep back into the throne room and witness something terrible it would be Stelly, who stared up at the throne drooling and thinking about how much he wanted to sit on that thing. Are we still coming back to that? Was it just a gag? Or did Oda even intend to use Stelly in this role when he wrote the first part of the Reverie back before Wano, and changed his mind of the past fiveish years?
Nice moments for Issho and the Leo/Sai duo in the Cipher Pol scene. Still not a huge fan of all of CP9 making it to CP0 though. And I have some questions about Issho 'helping' the Revolutionaries free slaves during the attack. Surely he wouldn't get to keep his job after that. At least if it was as blatant as Jabra makes it sound. Has to have been more of a plausibly deniable 'whoops, didn't see them going' kind of thing that Jabra and Aramaki are seeing straight through.
I don't necessarily have a suspension of disbelief issue with Vivi slipping her bonds to escape alongside Wapol here, it makes sense she'd have been working on something anyway, but like one panel of her palming her old peacock whips to cut the ropes or something would have gone a long way to making things feel comprehensive here. It's a small enough that that Oda could definitely have found space on the page for it if he wanted to. I think I'm just taking it easy on this scene because of how funny it is for Kinderella to assume Wapol and Vivi are running away together at the end.
With the apparent promise of an Egghead colour spread next week, I think we'll see the flashback wrapping up fairly soon. We've seen all the things I recall being built up as offscreen Reverie events during the Wano intermissions and pre-Egghead chapters, and seems unlikely anything of note would really have happened as Sabo and the Vivi/Wapol duo make the rest of their escapes. And it would be good to see the Strawhats at least one more time before this volume ends - though I've got a sinking feeling that might be a cut back to a state of defeat and York proclaiming her victory as an end-of-book cliffhanger, given how long it's been. But we won't know until the chapter drops, and weeks like this just show how hard it can be to predict any part of where One Piece is going next.

Based on Imu's line of questioning, I'm wondering if Lily was perhaps some sort of double agent or mole. Everything we've seen and heard so far seems to indicate that the other 19 rulers and/or Imu trusted Lily enough that her scattering the Poneglyphs was deemed a mistake, but Imu still had enough suspicions of her loyalty to consider there was some treachery at play. It also occurs to me that in order for Lily to need to scatter the Poneglyphs in the first place, the World Government must've already collected/stolen them at some point during the Void Century - which is odd given that we were told that the Poneglyphs were forged in Wano (and probably with the help of Pluton) and their existence has been portrayed as the Ancient Kingdom in the end being desperate to be remembered. Perhaps the Ancient Kingdom and their allies realized that their loss was inevitable, and the Nefertari's allying with the World Government was secretly a last-ditch effort to secure one small final victory?
Either way I do find it funny how this information re-contextualizes Imu holding Vivi's picture. Instead of it being "she looks like Imu's past lost love" like some were speculating, it's looking more like "she looks like the motherfucker who ruined everything."

Oh I actually have a theory about this! The bit with Shirahoshi cemented a suspicion for awhile now that she and Neptune left the Reverie/Levely early, and I believe the same might be true for Stelly as well. In 956 when Morgans is shown to have published the news in Marie Geoise before all the other leaders have left, Stelly is shown to be reading the news on a boat already heading back to Goa. Maybe in the midst of all the confusion happening, he attempted to sit on the thrown, got caught, and then promptly got kicked out of Marie Geoise?

of note would really have happened as Sabo and the Vivi/Wapol duo make the rest of their escapes.
I suppose there's the possibility that Vivi and Sabo bumped into each other (which is how she learned the news of Cobra's death) during their escape, but it's not guaranteed and I suspect that we won't learn anything majorly new from it, like we would if this was Sabo was talking to Luffy. (And if she ran into Bonney, we won't learn much of anything).
Honestly, one of the biggest things Vivi could do is takeover the Economic Journal and publish an exposé titled "the world government killed my father." For that though, she really needs Sabo's help to piece things together but neither knows where the other is (unless, as stated above, they met briefly at the Holy Land). On the other hand, Vivi does know where Luffy is and certainly would love to see him again, and Sabo needs to find Luffy to fulfill Cobra's request and does work for an organization that probably good at information gathering and is led by a guy who knows Dr. Vegapunk. And so...
-
@Bugs She's with Wapol, who saw Cobra's death and Imu. So, she doesn't need Sabo to know what happened.

@Captain-M said in Chapter 1085: The Death of Nefeltari Cobra:
And it would be good to see the Strawhats at least one more time before this volume ends
While it's very likely for V107 to end in 1086, someone pointed to me that a lot of previous chapters had only 15 pages instead of the usual 17. This may indicate that V107 may get 11 chapters as well, ending in Ch 1087.
11-chapter volumes in a row aren't common, but also not unheard of, like volumes 57-58-59, 67-68, 82-83, or 93-94-95.
