590: One Piece/Toriko/Dragon Ball Z Crossover Special

I tried to watch once and stopped cause its very childlish and not so intresting plot you can explain me what so good in this series maybe I will continue!?
Im an only 2011 anime watcher, but from my experience, it isnt childish at all, I think youll stop thinking that once you really get into the series, it is serious but with a nice innocent touch from the relationships between the main characters. Fights are really well thought and have an interesting power system, and there are some really neat and likeable characters. I love the plot but I havent catch up to where the manga is so I cant give you advice about it. I would really recommend you to read/watch it though, its a pity Togashis a lazy fellow and the manga is in hiatus, so if you read it all at once im afraid youll have to wait for a long while
so… where could I find this in english subs, and when? thanks sorry about all the questions!
From what I read, they will be out in more or less one week. No official subs, only fansubs.
-
I can't believe I didn't notice Pandaman the first time watching. That's awesome.
-
Finally watched the 1st part (raw), and despite the scaling back in power (mainly for Goku), it was a very enjoyable romp. Seeing Luffy vs. Toriko vs. Goku was a treat, and I enjoyed seeing their back and forth. Even though the ending of this episode was spoiled for me, I could see it coming a mile away…and it still kinda irks me (in the sense it's supposed to, I guess). I just get annoyed when those idiotic spectators see such grandiose acts of power from everyone BUT Mr. Satan and still see him as the strongest (I know that's the joke...it's just never been a popular joke for me). Despite that, I feel the first part of the episode was pretty good. Art and some animation was a bit wonky, but it was still enjoyable to see these characters play off each other.
-
I'm thinking English subs might be up within a few days. French subs are already up.
-
Now I finished watching the 2nd part (raw). Gotta say I liked this one a lot more than the first one. There was much more interaction and the crossover teams were at least fun to watch (albeit some characters just got shafted too soon in an "eh?" way - Brook or a "wtflol!" way - Franky). The overall fight between the monster and our heroes was pretty entertaining, and I was able to sustain disbelief for some of their troubles. I mean, I know a lot of people are saying that it's crap that Goku had to even use SSJ3…but in Goku's defense, the thing wouldn't stop, got bigger, faster, and stronger, and it was eating up the Spirit Bomb...at that point, I'd be fed up enough with that thing and just make sure it would not be able to get up after that, but again, that's just me. The art and animation was a lot better in this one, though the still shot ending was a bit "meh", it was charming enough to end it on that note. If anything, I would say that this special, alone, would make me buy an individual DVD/BD w/ all the other crossover specials on it.

Dear Toei,
Make an entire Arc of this. You don't have to fit it into the story or explain what's happening in canon, plus you get plenty of filler to create a buffer zone. Then start making the episodes paced well.

-
^ I definitely would not object to that! Yeah Toei, have at it w/ this kinda stuff! Hell, bring in some villains from the respective series (ala the Detective Luffy fillers), now that would be interesting! XD
-

Well, it's on a whole different level as far as shounen series go (I was comparing it to the aforementioned AssClass, which IMO is highly overrated, and Toriko). Of course it's no seinen, so you shouldn't expect anything too serious, though if you watched only the first episodes of the Hunter Exam arc you're in for a great ride.
Hunter may appear childish at first sight (mostly due to Gon, the main character), but it's actually one of the most violent (if not THE most violent) shounen I've ever read, both graphically and psychologically. As the story progresses it gets more and more twisted and more and more complex. The villains are exceptional in their characterization, it's not just "we want to kill hurr hurr"; I'd say EVERYTHING in Hunter has behind itself a great dose of thinking and reflection. The battles aren't a power struggle, but contain instead lots of strategy, ruse and cleverness (without overdoing it with too much exposition and esplanations a la Araki in JoJo). Togashi (the author) gives a meaning, and a certain degree of deepness, to every element he introduces. Also he's exceptional at taking pre-existing shounen tropes and making something new out of them: Hunter is almost never predictable.
@Devil:
Im an only 2011 anime watcher
There's about two more episodes of Greed Island… then... believe me when I say that when the next arc begins the proverbial shit really hits the fan... I don't even know how they'll manage to keep airing it in that time-slot. Also at the end of that arc is one of the most epic fights in shounen history.
ON TOPIC
Italian subs are out as well, if you're curious to know what they say at a specific point and you can't wait for eng subs I can translate a few short lines. -

If the head writers of both series could get to get to plot out a twenty-six episode plot for three months that really would be interesting. Have everyone fight the other's villains and whatnot.

The problem with that is we still don't know how a lot of major Toriko and One Piece characters fight, it'd be awesome when all three series are finished
Imagine Big Moms crew fighting the Bishokuya over chefs
Or Kaidou getting hunted down by Jirou cause he wants to eat him
starr vs akainu
zoro vs picolo
Vegeta vs Zebra
Brunch vs Usopp (who has a bigger nose!!)I'll stop cause I could make stupid cross over fights all day, the problem will always be that cross over story lines are destined to suck :(
….... that and
! Tommyrod is no longer with us :cwy:

English subs (Part 1)
Thank you I love your new avatar thanks. Been meaning to watch this with subs and 720p.
-
I don't think it's particularly much of a concern. You could literally tell a story using any era of the characters, even if two of the shows are not finished.
Personally, I think a story taking place right after the Twenty-Third Tenka'ichi Budoukai would be nice. Villain Piccolo teaming up with whatever villains are used in Toriko and Baroque Works would be interesting. Crocodile would probably want the Dragon Balls, after all.
-
I'd really love to see WhiteBeard vs Ichiryu
the strongest man manliest bout!!
Luffy passing on some high level ingredient for just some regular meat would be great
I imagine Buu and Big Mom would get a long really well, with him being able to make anything into candy and sweats
-
I'd really love to see WhiteBeard vs Ichiryu
I wouldn't, Ichiryu could probably kill someone like Whitebeard with his intimidation aura alone.
-

First of all….. Don't diss Whitebeard
second, a random fodder monkey survived his intimidation along with everyone else at the Gourmet corps hideout, I'm pretty sure sure WhiteBeard can handle it
and I was talking about in his prime, when he had the goldylocks..... how can a man look so badass with blond curly hair.... Only whitebeard

Now that I think I'd enjoy far more than this two part special. A whole season would really allow for some interesting interactions.

I liked it.
Really I'm not expecting Shakespeare here, it's just meant to be a fun little crossover between the groups and nothing more beyond that. If it feels childish, well you all seem to forget this is aimed at kids.
That said I liked the simplicity of it, a tournament arc for fighting between the three then the group facing a threat together. Ho-hum, yeah I was dissapointed so of the characters got bit parts but all three shows have huge casts and some are gonna get the shaft. It happens, (Heck I was hoping for more 18 but she hardly spoke a word or did anything meaningful) I will say I did get a little miffed at them hyping a Zoro/Vegeta/Zebra fight and ended it on a lame brick joke which uses the same animation from before. Just c'mon now, Toei, missed opportunity. What they did do was pretty cool though and the jokes (from what I could understand) were pretty funny.
Yeah yeah, Mr. Satan won through accident again, it's a running gag in DBZ and not gonna change people, get over it. And I DO NOT CARE if Goku can destroy planets. Luffy can destroy islands and Toriko can take down beasts half his size. The point is all three are super strong and take on world threatening entities. Just enjoy them knocking each other around. The final fight I will give kudos to, no one got overshadowed. They were working together, heck I even liked that they subverted the Spirit Ball finisher. Yeah Goku got the last shot in but if only because Luffy and Toriko had to hold the creature in place. It was a team effort, that's all I can ask.
It's just mindless fun and leagues better then the previous crossovers (especially Cross Epoch which just felt like a 19 page joke). If Toei can do better, I look forward to their next special. For now, I say this one is a least one of their decent efforts.
-
I was wondering.
The part where Goku has to leave in the middle of the race because King Kai senses "a great danger from space". Is that somehow tied in with movie when Goku meets Bils on King Kai's planet?

Didn't you see he sensed Tina the most hatred/vile character from Toriko.:ninja:

We meet again, anime forum.
I'm confused here. How many people actually believed Toei wouldn't mess up one way or another? This ain't a movie, and its very premise is terrible for a movie. Nonetheless, it had some good perks that move it into the "decent" lot.
I haven't watched any Toei anime in months because I've lost too much interest, thanks to the awful pacing and filler material of some of these otherwise good series. However, this is one time that I will set as an exception. I freely admit that this particular special, while most definitely made of platypus shit, has several gems hidden among it that actually elevate it above average. I don't give a damn about the little plot it holds. For me, this episode was about resurrected nostalgia and comedic gags, as well as select scenes that were beautifully animated. I won't go into how bad its cons are because that would take too much of my boring life.
Above all, it's heartwarming to see production that's gone into appeasing the
crazed otaku of thefanbase all the same.Cheers, folks.

Someone's probably mentioned this, but at the beginning of the satan/goku/luffy/toriko fight in the first part I think, when goku punches luffy and his rubber head stretches and almost hits mr. satan, there's a HILARIOUS out of context shot if you pause it.
Should speak for itself:
!

Interesting. I read HxH one year ago, but stopped, skipped and stopped again. HxH has a pretty strong beginning, no argument there, but since Greed Island, it went "boring". I couldn't stand the Greed Island Arc anymore, but i heard that CA Arc is one of the bests Shounen Arcs, so i skipped to the beginning of that Arc and read about 10-15, maybe more, i don't know. I stopped again.
I agree, ASSCLASS is a overrated but Toriko is imo above HxH. I can say this because i didn't stopped it :D. But the Awesome Fight you mentioned, which one is it? Maybe i look into it, i wanted to give HxH another try anyway, maybe this fight will make some SHIT from GI Arc and CA Arc worth^^ -
So I watched it again with subs. First, the subbed version I saw was pretty bad in terms of translation quality, but watching it again did confirm a few things I missed before. I stand by some of what I said, but I honestly did enjoy this special the second time around far more. I think the fights were pretty solid and I did laugh more at some of the scenes than I did on Saturday. The boss fight isn't as bad when you think of it from the angle that it absorbed the energy of all those strong people, so I didn't mind it as much on my second viewing.
I decided to go purhase Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z Kai for a future watch sometime within the year. To my understanding, Kai doesn't actually cover the entire Dragon Ball Z, right?
-

Dragonball Z Kai does not cover the Buu saga (last saga) at the moment. I believe it was announced that the Buu saga will get the Kai treatment in the near future.
-
Yeah, watching it translated was more enjoyable, even with the dodgy subs available. Makes it more clear that the fighters were intended to fight the "Big Toro" from the beginning and that the creature also absorbed their energy and strength while the Big 3 were fighting it. Mr. Satan bluffing his victory saying that he is so strong he didn't even need to fight to win the match makes a bit more sense now. Also, the bits of verbal humor are easier to appreciate like Franky interacting with Android 18 on how Suuupeeer it is to be a cyborg. Sorry, Franky, she's taken.
-
WatchOP has the stream up for 590 now. I didn't see anyone mention it yet.
-
Videl looked like she was stuck in GT
Franky getting owned was priceless.
Vegeta, Zoro, and Zebra? got like 10 seconds of screentime lol
-
The franky part was by fair my favourite part of part 2
-
-Someone make the eyecatcher of Luffy/Goku/Toriko laughing into a gif, please
My wish was (kinda) granted!
-
That gif is really creepy about the 5th time around
-

Yeah, I read it will only be available in the US, which is odd since they're still recording it in Japan. It goes to show just how big the franchise is in the states.
Well, I got all four seasons so I guess I have almost all of the story. I could always get cheap DBZ dvds for the final arc if need be, but I'll wait to see if Kai comes out anytime soon.
Anyone think there's any chance of these crossover specials ever being released on DVD in dub format in the future?
-

It appears that Funimation's lack of the Toriko license to localize the series is what's barring it from any North American release. They haven't even been able to stream the episodes on their website. So unless they license Toriko or manage to clear whatever legal roadblocks that are currently in place, I find it very unlikely we'll see a localized dub release.
-
i had to laugh at the fact that they kept the tradition of Goku's shirt being torn in every battle XD
-
I can't help but feel Brook's jokes are starting to become a bit too distasteful. And in front of children? C'mon, man.

Not sure if kidding, but the subs are rather bad. It's translated from japanese to french and then french to English, so stuff like this was bound to happen.

Thought you were joking on that but it has been licensed for quite a while. Part 4 is to come out soon which includes the ice hunter arc.
-
I noticed Mansam has the same voice as Arlong
-
I thought this was a fun watch. It was interesting to hear the Japanese voices for the DBZ cast, since I'd never heard them before. I find that Goku and Gohan's just really don't fit them…I understand that they're the original's and all, but a woman can only voice male characters for so long...doesn't really fit when they're the age that they are and are as muscled as they are. Testosterone has to kick in at some point in that regard.
But again, fun! I'm glad Zebra was not heavily featured, as the dub has yet to get to his part of the story, so the lack of spoilers in that sense was excellent.
-
For those waiting for a proper Japanese to English subs, Anime-Destiny has the special subbed:
http://www.anime-destiny.org/ -
I kinda wish they had Goku compare Gear Second to Kaioken, since in the anime by both look similar and Toei even uses some of the same sound effects for them.
-
@Galaxy:
What? Toriko is licensed.
Well color me clueless, it is! I guess there is technically no reason why it shouldn't be localized, and I'm sure the 3rd special having DBZ in it should give it a bigger push in that direction.
-
LOOOOL!
I just noticed that in the final scene, Komatsu is using one of those crunching fist Gourmet Spicers. -
Finally got to see it with English subs. Definitely seems less weird if I know what people are saying lol.
I did enjoy the fight animations and characters lumped by trope. Always fun in crossovers. Also I wanted to see a Sunny Chopper fusion lol. Rainbow fur~
-Angry guys.
-Cape and turban.
-Women.
-Chefs.
-Pervs.
-Brains and Strategists.
-Kids.
-Cowards.
-Leads.
etc.My only real negative is that I forgot how much I hated Goku's Japanese voice. A 40 year old man shouldn't sound like a young lady.
Also Mr. Satan falling into the middle of the ring somehow at the start of the fight even though his seat was hella far back.
