Chapter 1108: Come In, World
-
- I think I figured out who fed Luffy, there is one character that conspicuously disappeared and no one noticed. HE must obviously be playing some 3D chess here...
-
On a less stupid note, on reddit someone suggested Vegapunk's message might actually be a transmission of Kuma's memories (he mentioned being able to store them in his system). I actually think the idea would be amazing. Even if the entire world can't see it, I imagine what the effect would be on the Marines on Egghead watching all that from the POV of a WG's victim.
It could cause a major crack within the Marines, specially once word of it starts spreading, something I've been waiting to happen. -
Also, I hope next chapter we can get an update on Stussy (even one reaction panel would be enough).
-
Manga Plus is a bit unstable today...
-
-
Hancock doesn't get to interact with others in colorspreads. The exceptions are Luffy and Smoker, who she met in the story. This is likely because her relationships will be built up in the story first. Compare Reiju/Tashigi, who are unlikely to ever interact for real.
-
This Caribou scene feels unnecessary. Everything in it could be figured out by readers, and the Ancient Weapon recap will probably happen again in the future... I wonder if this small 2-page scene is meant to bridge 1107's ending and a 3rd scene in this arc.
-
This chapter returns the Vice-admirals to relevancy and puts a big target on Bonney's head. Also, the named giants aren't with Bonney's group anymore, so we may see some giants be fodderized ahead.
-
Vegapunk's request to protect Bonney has far less weight on her "joining the crew" than in the unofficial translation. Compare: "They'll be after her life, of course! Please, keep her safe!" with "She will be a target for the rest of her life... Please, look after her!"
-
Awakened zoans risk losing their minds to their feral natures. Is that what's Saturn's doing? I was expecting Lucci's trump card against Zoro to be something like this: he gets feral, but way stronger and faster. I'm surprised that it may have been pulled off by Saturn first.
-
While killing Vegapunk is the far better story, IMO, I feel Oda is setting up his survival here. Kizaru's attack, either by design or coincidence, may have just cauterized his previous wound, stopping the bleeding. His heart still stops nonetheless, but that too can be reversed.
And, before anyone says that's ridiculous, we need to aknowledge that it's very within the parameters of other ridiculous death-defying moments. I can't shake the feeling that Vegapunk's death will be another such copout.
-
Nika-Luffy gets serious for one panel, at least. I don't think he will be able to hold both Kizaru and Saturn for long, thought.
I also don't feel last chapter teasing Kizaru vs Sanji was misdirection. There's still some setup to do before the final action stretch of this arc.
Last chapter made it seem like we were near the end of the redefinition phase of Egghead and the final match-ups were about to begin. This one, however, shows the arc is still moving its pieces before the final stretch. That means there's still room for some surprises ahead.
-
Almost an year ago, I predicted the Egghead incident would involve Vegapunk sacrificing himself and broadcasting his forbidden knowledge to the world. So, this chapter was pleasant for my ego, lol.
I can't wait for the revelations, but bear in mind they may not come all at once next chapter. I see Oda doing this in one of two ways:
-
1- We don't see the message immediately, but it's replayed for us readers at the end of the arc.
-
2- The message juxtaposes with the action and is slowly revealed in paralel with the events in the island over several chapters.
-
-
-
Hoping we'll get some clashes with the crew now that VAs are back in action...
-
Devon is another victim of "Oda should not draw this character with their mouth closed" disease.
-
@Cyan-D-Funk She looks fine to me.
Actually, except nose and teeth, it feels like she’s a little prettier every time she appears. I still remember her original design, with square jaw and receding hairline.
-
I have a feeling we won't actually learn what Vegapunk says next chapter, only reaction shots around the world, like "I can't believe it!", or "It's true?!".
-

Well after that Marco ending in Wano, I wouldn’t be surprised.
What the heck was that?.
In a flashback:
Flying turkey: “Hey guys good job, you’re the future bye”Luffy: “you helped me out at summit war bye.”
And thus began Marco’s real adventure, looking for Patchwork.
-
With the whole announcement thing, personally, I see there being information that shocks the world, but not much in the way of most readers able to put the pieces together. With over 1100 chapters of the story, we already know the true nature of the WG, and can connect the idea of the WG committing heinous acts to grab power for themselves. So anything put out will be stuff readers can put two and two together, but the general populace wouldn't know. I can see feed of what is currently going on in Egg Head being spread out, with information about Lulusia and the truth of King Cobras's demise being mentioned. All of this would be lighting a mountain of powder keg to truly put the world into chaos and many nations revolting.
I would be surprised if any info on the void century was shared, as that feels more like something we will get once Robin has access to the true poneglyphs. At most, perhaps the name of the old civilization, which would cap off how in the Ohara flashback, we never learned the name as the elders commanded everyone be executed before they finished speaking.
-
Good chapter!
One thing which I am quite unsure about is in the panel where Luffy seems to grab Kizaru and he is bleeding almost looks like Saturn eye shot him instead of Luffy because he seems to lose his mind after using this form or maybe it's just Luffy grabbing that light stick too hard lol. -
The world’s greatest and most humble scientific genius.
LOL
Oda had me laughing with that.
-
Kizaru is being crushed to death as we speak
Where the fuck is his awakening ?
every time he's been caught by Luffy it was him being distracted by his mission
so to add "no awakening for you" on top of this is just brutal and shit ass bias writing in general.
I'm still upset and disappointed that none of the antagonists in Wano awakened their powers so i hope this doesn't extent to the main and strongest foe in Egghead.
Kizaru deserves a better send off. this is terrible ending for him targeting a helpless old man while getting clapped doing so. it's just the worst writing possible for Kizaru.
-
Imagine being the 1st Gorosei to mess up this bad lmao/
I suppose whatever mishaps they had in the past, they just did some cleansing to erase it from history. This upcoming L doesn't look like something you can just send lackeys in to clean up.
This isn't a courtroom where you can just tell the jury to not factor what you they witnessed into their judgement. WG gotta go door to door, Portgas D. Rouge style, but for the whole world. "Do you relate or find yourself feeling like what Apple Head said was true at all"? 5 year old trying to eat breakfast as Captain Koby and VA Smoker question them. Marines are suckers, so they will go along with it too. The time for them to change sides or revolt in any manner is not yet.
-
There's a literal organ research facility on Egghead Island, the idea that Vegapunk can theoretically be operated on is not as far-fetched as I initially thought.
-
Hmmm, will VP's flashback come via this video. Many ways to do this. Almost similar to Oden's journal that Yamato had. Instead, Punk Records might be acting on its own. I wonder if there is some things that he even kept from his satellites. Maybe there is something that can reach York to play out in the future.
-
@Cockycent said in Chapter 1108: Come In, World:

Unless we are talking about a 1- or at most 2-chapter short flashback, I don't think the story should pause again so soon.
We spent 10 chapters in cutaways, then 6 and half chapters in present Egghead, then 7 and half chapters of flashback, then back to 6 more chapters in the present.
-
sounds like it's time for a cutaway again then :p
In all seriousness, I do think Vegapunk should have a flashabck but I don't think it needs to be any longer than two chapters really. Vegapunk's youth where he meets Dragon and Clover and becomes fascinated with the Void Century is the main thing. Meeting Dragon doesn't even need to happen here either as it can happen in his own flashback. While I'd love to also see MADS and how that fell apart, that could also happen in a mini Weevil/Bakin flashback in a future arc instead.
-
@Deicide Plus cover story for MADS
-
@Cockycent Cover stories don't usually affect the flow of the main story, so they are fine.
-
I'm surprised less people have talked about the beeping machine on the final page tbh. It goes beep, beep, then cracks and fisses out, and the causes the screen to come on. Surely that's a heart monitor and it shows us that Vegapunk has actually died (or at least his heart has stopped beating).
-
@Deicide I'm speaking to how much ground has been covered for VP's backstory. Looking at the lil MADS highlight tape in the covers, it leaves a good amount to be covered.

This got me thinking, do the Elders get replaced?
So far every time we've seen the Elders it's always the same 5 and we don't know how old/how far back they go but we also don't know if it was always this 5.
I don't see Luffy starting to kill his opponents with Saturn on Egghead but one way or another that dude is done.
So he comes back crawling (pun intended) to Mary Geoise and Imu or the other Elders deem him unworthy to keep serving the cause and decide to eliminate him.Are there now only 4 Elder Stars? Would another Celestial Dragon recieve the upgrade in rank? Was that why we got introduced to Saint Garling this arc?
-
@Cockycent I don't expect a full flashback for Vegapunk, but small bits, some from others' PoV, kinda like Kaido's flashback.
If Stella dies, I can see the Satellites mourning him as an opportunity for such scenes.
-
Huh, so Vegapunk went from wanting to leave the island to not wanting to leave anymore just like that, huh?
-
@black-leg-jex not many people are buying what they see. if he's truly dead then no wonder. Oda forgot how to kill a character properly. Just look how he offed Kuma's father. everything is half assed nowadays. but I'll excuse him, he's too busy learning how to draw butt shots.
-
The monitor does flat line but I'm also wondering if it's like one of those visual audio recordings. The line is flat when the robotic voice doesn't speak but it begins to bounce around when it does. The 'beep beep click' parts made me think just snail noises but because of the smiling I can easily just as see it all being related to Vegapunk's heart fading and him passing One Piece style.
What will Vegapunk reveal? There is a Monster King/Queen in the basement? The government holds back ancient tech to keep everyone in check? I'm assuming it's along these ancient history lines.
Sanji noting Saturn's blank stare reminds me of the Impel Down Beast Guards as well as early Monster Chopper. Luffy's eye juxtaposed with Saturn's on the last spread also has me wondering what Oda is thinking with that. Luffy's got a bit of the crazy eyes too. Not sure if we are supposed to read anything into it but what comes to mind is Kaidou questioning who Luffy was after he awakened.
I'm probably thinking far too much in terms of real world consequences but I don't like Luffy telling Sanji to pick up Vegapunk no matter how much he cries. Not after what Vegapunk explained last chapter anyway. Should Vegapunk die I wonder if Sanji will feel any guilt over this. My hopes is that if he does, Sanji will have a bigger emotional reason to go after Kizaru in the future. I'm still feeling that Anime intro with the OG Monster Trio against the Admirals lol.
-
Ooh, this is actually heating up right when I was expecting Egghead to start winding down and continue cutting off sources of tension. There was a point a year and a bit ago where the question might have been asked, 'why this arc, on this island?' If Oda is rushing to the finale, what does Egghead offer that Elbaf doesn't, and what will it add to contribute to the macro-level plot? Up til now, aside from wrapping up stories for supporting cast members like Bonney and Kuma, it seemed that maybe the main thing here was getting the scientists in the party and setting up more Void Century teases to develop more later. Well I think now we're getting the big thing that made Egghead unskippable.
But first we've got a Jump cover here, the latest in a long line of 'Luffy is about to punch you' covers, now in Gear Five form, and a very relaxed colour spread. Sure, why not give Uta another appearance in the manga. But what's that going on between Reiju and Tashigi? But my favourite thing here is the dapper canines in the portraits in the background. Cute stuff.
Caribou's scene feels like more of a recap than anything. I'm actually surprised to see him and the Blackbeard Pirates again so soon, I would have been satisfied if their time on Egghead wrapped up with the last chapter. Of course, there's no chance they choose not to take him with them, even if Oda leaves it ambiguous.
Now, I'm not a firearms guy. I don't live in one of those countries where you see them regularly. But is it just me or is Augur's form with the rifle really bad here, with the stock all the way out the back. You're meant to use that thing to brance for the recoil, right? So if he pulls the trigger this weird way he's holding it, the whole thing just slips between his arms and goes flying backwards, wouldn't it? I'll accept corrections for anyone who does know guns on this point.
I love getting names for all the vice admirals here. It's the details. Guillotine is still my favourite design of the batch.
The talk about taking back control of the Pacifistas by eliminating Bonney feels odd though. Is that how it works? So a person of equal rank in the hierarchy can't override orders, but the death of the current top dog will let someone lower down cancel their standing orders? Pacifista control is a mess, and for all the ways Egghead has been a breath of fresh air post-Wano, it's complicated contrivances like this that drag it down in the end-of-arc retrospective.
The giants' meetup with Franky's group has some interesting points. First: they don't recognise Franky because his bounty picutre was changed to the Sunny's figurehead. But that's still weird. It can't have been done just to set up this half-second misunderstanding. Franky's ready to square up, making the at this point safe assumption they've come as enemies, which is great from him. We learn that Usopp's been talking about his time with the giants to the crew since Franky joined. You have to assume that kind of offscreen bonding is happening, but it's always nice getting the little confirmations of it.
Glad to see one of the weaponised sea beasts survived. And Bluegrass and Doll manage to look very cool riding it back to Egghead. I wonder if Doll's connection to Saul is setting up a bigger arc or moment for her, or if it's just an excuse to remind casual readers of his name.
Saturn is truly terrifying in his new form. That's fantastic design. Even before Sanji points it out, you can see something is wrong with his eyes. That is one intense stare. And the fact that he doesn't speak once in the whole chapter makes him feel all the more inhuman. What is this man now, if he's still a man at all?
But where did Borsalino go after the last chapter's standoff. Has there been a little offscreen clash with Luffy and Sanji he's just retreated from? Was he forced to get out of the way as demon Saturn stampeded in? I'd rather have seen either of those things than releared what Caribou knows at the start of the chapter. It's not a hard one to explain, but it still feels like a continuity glitch, which is frustrating. It came up during the 'who fed Luffy' discussions in the past week that Luffy's position changes before and after the flashback, last seen in Franky's hands going in, then lying a decent way away from the group with no apparent action taken by him or Franky after. If there was one thing you could absolutely say in the Onigashima battle's favour, it's that it was intricately and carefully mapped. We had the layout of the whole castle and knew where everyone was inside it. No one teleported from one side to another in a single page, they got at least a little bit of offscreen time to travel before popping up somewhere new. The attention to detail was a highlight there, which makes it all the more disappointing that this battle's staging misses beats like this.
I can't help feeling really bad for Vegapunk as he lays dying here. Not because I'm super personally invested in him, but just because it feels so wrong for the character design. He's so goofy and cartoony with the apple head and forever-lolling tongue that he feels like he should be incompatible with blood. This guy should be giving me the tutorial of an edutainment game, not having his guts blasted out. Like a child, or a housepet, the apparent innocence makes it feel even crueller to attack him. (Apparent innocence only, we all know his morality is questionable at best given the horrors he enabled for the World Government.)
Borsalino getting to finish the job is a shock, and yeah, the monitor at the end does make me think the job is finished. Rough, and unexpected. I was better on Kuma's death and Vegapunk's rescue, but it looks like I got it the wrong way around. Luffy's giant transformation is an awesome panel, with just the intensity you want for a moment like this. No notes. I also love the smaller panel of the page showing him from ground level, towering over the buildings. Would love a bigger and more detailed form of that next week please.
And then the stinger. Vegapunk seems to have set up a dead man switch with some big secrets. This is great. Perfect thing for the smartest man in the world to do, especially considering how long he'd been expecting an attempt on his life was coming. And it has the potential to be huge for the world. A turning point. Potentially the start of a war or several. I don't think we're getting the full Void Century here, of course, but it's hard to imagine it playing out without at least one major reveal. And how will the Government respond? With the Buster Call running too slow, will Imu turn the Mother Flame on Egghead, triggering an escape sequence (and maybe cutting the exposition dump short because this is One Piece). The potential for this is huge. Huge.
I'm always happy to be getting three chapters in a row, but I'm so glad this one didn't line up with a break. See you all next week when the bombs drop.

The colorspread is because of the Heroines Vol. 2 novel. It features short stories for Uta, Tashigi, Reiju and Hancock (Vol. 1 had Nami, Robin, Vivi and Perona). The colorspread also doubles as the novel's cover.

Pacifista hierarchy has been a mess since the beginning. Lucci took control from Sentomaru (who has higher rank) by "killing" Sentomaru (who wasn't dead).
Then Stussy couldn't order the Seraphim despite having the same rank as Lucci and he being unconscious.
Then York took control and no one thought of just knocking her out so any other Vegapunk could command them.
Then Kizaru beat up Sentomaru (higher rank) to take control of the Pacifistas.
Presumably, if Bonney go unconscious, the Pacifistas lose their "command tower" (as Lucci put it) and anyone with command can cancel her orders.

Egghead has been full of those, unfortunately. Remember when Saturn pierced Vegapunk, then disappeared as Bonney came to Vegapunk?
Egghead has been very frustrating for someone who values such details.

Yup, I've seen the cover since I first typed my thing up. I guess it helps with Oda's workload to double up the colour spread with doing some promo art for a spinoff, but I perfer the series' colour pages to be their own thing.

It truly only gets worse with time.
Are you sure about the idea of no one thinking of just knocking out York though? With that whole thing being offscreen, we don't know the order of operations between the crew finding out about York and the Seraphim being bubbled. We don't know what plans were made and tried before getting to the point we came back from the cutaway on.

I very much feel the same way about this. And it sucks because Wano, if nothing else, was so good at this kind of thing. Egghead seems to show focussed improvement on a lot of that arc's weaker points like pacing and cast bloat, but its a shame the focus on those things also seems to have distracted from the things it got right.
How will the cycle of overcorrections play out on Elbaf, I wonder...

The thing is, when the marines arrive, the Seraphim remain captured because they are still under York's orders.
Imagine how useful the Seraphim would be if the crew just knocked York out and Vegapunk ordered them to help against the marines? Remember that no one knew Saturn was there, so it would be a very logical decision. Instead, they left the Seraphim still under York's orders.
-
@Deicide But if she's out of commission you can't make her check in with the Celestial Dragons to negotiate/gather info/do a fun misdirect for the audience as the scene changes back. And if you're using her that way maybe it's smarter not to risk having Seraphim anywhere nearby, just in case.
-
The Jump cover is amazing!
I think the egghead incident will be the trigger for "the biggest battle in One Piece history"
-
Maybe it will be the trigger to the battle that's going to be the trigger for the biggest battle in OP history.
-
@Captain-M They can knock her out after the call. Or they can knock her out first, then order the Seraphim, then wake her up. Once another Vegapunk is in control she can't order the Seraphim until they have no orders standing or the original commander is out of commission.
-

The hierarchy only makes sense if the "unconscious" part is done in a way that could be misconstrued as "death". The way Lucci was KO'd was very different from the two times Sentomaru was.
The Pacifista may have a way to detect vitals, which they can use to determine authority in case the signals get weak enough that death feels convincing. I cannot prove this though, but it's within the realm of Vegapunk's stupid sci-fi technology.
-
If that was the issue, they would’ve been able to take control of the Seraphim when York was turned into stone. Hard to be “less alive” than that.
-
It’s clear Oda wanted a way for bad guys to override good guys’ orders, but deny the good guys the same advantage. The problem is that it makes no sense.
-
Wondering about Vegapunk’s transmission. The thing that would really shake up thing in-world is the revelation of Imu. It would mean that kings and marines would reevaluate their alliance to the WG, given the whole premise of joining a leaderless congregation was a lie.
But I’m not sure how Vegapunk found out about Imu. Maybe the Poneglyphs contained warnings of him, but still he had to check this guy was still alive today. Now the Revolutionaries know that, but I don’t think Vegapunk had time to incorporate that in his transmission.
The main thing he knew about the lost century was that they were technologically advanced, and that their science could help people today. But that doesn’t seem like a shocking revelation to everyone. The CDs could argue that the old science contained terrible weapons (partly true) and for that good reason research is forbidden. The same way Ohara were branded devils.
I hope that for us, readers, there are juicy revelations. One thing that we can get would be the name of the ancient kingdom, which Clover was about to say.
We now have much more information to piece together something about AK through the name, especially if it’s something related to Dawn, Sun or Lunarian. -
I have no issue with how the hierarchy functioned. Once something like that is introduced, it's meant to be broken or some catch/surprise. My issue is that the surprise lacked pizzazz. I felt it would possibly lead to Bonney, but the way it was handle just didn't hook me. It is sweet of VP, but Oda didn't do anything special to get to that story beat.
I look at Raizo being safe and there is this whole build up of not saying the samurai's name and how much the Minks lost. Where was the impressive slight of hand or maneuvering here?
On a separate topic, maybe this truth that the WG have been so against being exposed can bring some character out of Saturn. I expect this to be a way to milk their relationship since the Bonney stage is mostly over. It is VP's turn and this can also be a segue to Kizaru turning up the heat. Kizaru and VP have carried the arc really with Kuma getting a recent bump into 1st.
When he was getting all those sacrifices from Sentomaru and Stussy, I wondered why if he is to die. Looking back, those 2 survive and he most likely dies or just Punk Record lives on. Big 3 = Power Plant, York, and Punk Records according to Kizaru. How do you stop this message playing if Punk Records is behind it and that same PR is on the checklist to keep safe. Saturn would have to make that decision.
-
@Chams-0 I don't think it's logical that Vegapunk knows about Imu and the empty throne, it makes no sense for him.
what makes sense is a revelation regarding the void century which is another taboo. the ancient kingdom will be mentioned 100%.

But why would Vegapunk know of his existence? He was studying old books, and Nerona Imu is a public figure. Would the books know he's immortal and the current secret king of the world?
Also, Sabo just discovered Imu's existence and told Dragon. I feel Vegapunk's revelation will add new info, both to readers and to the Revolutionary, not be redundant with what we already know.
Personally, I think Vegapunk will reveal why the World Government forbid studying the past. There's some kind of shame or dark secret that would make it look bad to the entire world.
-
Oda now has the perfect chance to have Luffy use Borsalino as a lightsaber against Saturn... If he doesn't take it, he has officially lost it.

I thinking it has to be something that the world at large doesn't know but also something that is news to the readers.
So I'm betting VP talking about the lost century and revealing the name of the lost kingdom (and some more details around that like the super advanced tech)
For us the lost century is common knowledge but most people in OP's world are not aware that there is a lost century of info almost a thousand years ago and that it lead directly to the formation of the World Governament.
And the name of that kingdom was so important that it was the final nail in Professor Clover's coffin. The Elders entertained that phone call about the lost kingdom but as soon as he said he knew it's name they ordered the schoolars execution. -
@FolhaS I feel the name is a given, but I believe something more will be revealed, something that will surprise or excite readers.
-
Happy to see I was right about Augur and Devon being suspicious of Caribou. He's gonna have to spill a little more info to convince them to drag him along. I won't be surprised if our final cut to them leaving later will see Caribou tied up and being tortured.
Hopefully the vice admirals getting on the move can get some time to shine against the collective of fodder giants we've got now. I'd really rather not see more of them get one-shot like Tosa, but I'll give this one a pass. The sneak attack getting sneak attacked by giants is chuckle worthy.
Oda's definitely gonna go ham with having Dorry and Broggy reunite with giant Nika-Luffy. They'll probably get to share an attack on our good punching-bag Saturn, but Saturn just recovers again like always. Perfect excuse for pure fan service. I wonder if they'll hang back to try and hold Saturn and Kizaru off, or if we'll actually start running away together. Don't really know how they're supposed to survive Saturn's poison for long.
I get that Bluegrass' plan is more or less to use a sea beast to damage the giant's ship, but I can't help but feel she'd be more useful keeping some of the pacifista busy. She could easily just take control of 1 and then either get the troops to restrain it or just walk it into the ocean to be recovered later. Then move onto the next one. Eventually using a pacifista would probably do more damage to the giants and their ship too. Oh well, I guess Oda doesn't want the marines to look for any potential options besides just killing Bonney.
I wonder where Saturn's poison falls on the potency scale. Luffy may have a really strong constitution, but he's still not outright immune to the stronger stuff, like that poison fish and Queen's plagues. Also I just kinda realized... shouldn't the poison have gotten into VP and Kuma in their earlier stabbings? Maybe when we finally get to Chopper, we'll learn that both their bodies are already too gone to fix.
I'm a bit curious as to how much of the world is actually going to get this message. The people of the one piece world don't have smartphones or personal TVs for VP's message to hack into everywhere. The only time we've even seen long distance displays was when the government specifically setup for Ace's public execution in advanced, or when Ceasar made a stream to show off his new weapon to the underworld. Maybe instead it'll just hack into some nation's sound systems. When you add in all the damage that's happened, I could actually see this only reaching a few nearby nations or connections, like Morgans and Dragon. Of course, Morgans will edit and spread the word himself, but that makes more sense than all the world suddenly getting this auto-prepared message with nobody at the console.
Whatever comes next, hopefully it leads to Saturn snapping the rest of the way and just going total annihilation alongside Kizaru.

There were no signs of poison in Saturn's attacks before this chapter, so I guess he wasn't coating himself in it before. I guess Oda would have talked or shown it before (like the poison effect on the ground where Saturn stepped) if it was meant to be there.

When will we find out how Robin got hurt you think? Wasn’t she going to a place that both York and Atlas said they needed to check out? Or am I remembering that wrong?
