@AfroSamurai:
I really want to take this video at face value, but it's Vox…
But more to the point, that video discusses 'skepticism', which is kinda the problem when getting news from comedians. They make broad statements, which often lack nuance. And quite frankly, that's fine. If it's just comedy, that's absolutely fine.
But if you're getting the news from them, you need to be skeptical of the comedian's claims at all times. That's because the comedian will always portray the side of the story that can be framed for comedic effect, but will avoid getting bogged down by any technical details that might justify the other side, making it's actions anything less than ridiculous. Call me boring, claim that I'm giving too much weight to the nitty gritty details, but I'd always err on the side of getting as many possible viewpoints, and all the relevant info.
Now sure, if we're talking about 'Donald tweeted this, Donald said that', a comedian's as good as any journalist to discuss the story. Sometimes they may even be better, as the video pointed out above.
But when they discuss more complex policy, or, say, the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana, or what's been going on in Europe (brexit, EU problems, etc), it's often the case that they leave out so much that you can't get the full picture just from the comedian. And if you're not getting the full picture (both sides of a story), then that's not reliable news. It's biased, and a real news source is a lot better.
Just my 2 cents, being pedantic as usual.
EDIT: on second thought, comedians may be selective with the news for laughs, but many outlets (like Vox, or any tabloid) are selective for clicks and seasationalism. Leaves very few reliable, trusty news sources, especially when just scrolling through the headlines. So pick your poison really.
You basically summed up what i was thinking about this in a more cohrent manner.
Satire is a double edged sword.It can be used by people to avoid a nuanced and proper debate and present a biased,one-sided opinion to your audience,majority of whom are likely to lap up that biased opinion
