New MANGA Plus service from Shueisha (global, legal, simul, free, English releases)
Shueisha just rolled out a new English-language simulpub website/app (called MANGA Plus) that provides the latest chapters of One Piece (and many other Jump titles) for free. Kind of like Viz's recent SJ overhaul? Minus the "vault"? But…
The selling point this time is that it's GLOBAL. Every country in the world except Japan, S.Korea, and China.Article about it:

RE: My Hero Academia II - A true Hero
I remember seeing a post on reddit about a possible Destro (I think?) rat motif, including a tattoo somewhere. Sounds like it might actually be some pretty clever English!
Yeah the mouse/rat is the Liberation Army's emblem (with the text "One of Them"), found on Destro's shoulder during the Gentle monologue.
[
(](
)he did turn out to be Japanese, of course. but that speculation was over a year ago…)

RE: My Hero Academia II - A true Hero
Also, the implication is not that the CEO is Destro's child. More like a descendant (direct descendant - hence the black marks on face).
Destro was doing his thing 100-200 years ago, when you take into account factors like Inko being a 4th gen Quirky, or AFO being "over 100 years old."
This isn't super recent history. -
RE: My Hero Academia II - A true Hero
Goddamnit, i just realized Detnerat is supposed to be "Talented" backwards, but with the L swapped with a R.
Were you instructed about that CCC? Or is the Engrish (un)intentional from the Japanese side?
I can't publicly reveal what I know about this.
Wait. Even saying I know anything is implicitly revealing something.
Shit.
Never mind.I'm curious too if CCC can clarify anything about the opening exchange between Slippin' Go and Bakugo, since both of the scanlations made it seem like Bakugo had a problem with the hero's language.
Guy uses the word "yabai" which is (barely even) modern slang (at this point).
It's a completely throwaway bit.The real mystery is why the chapter is titled after Slidin' Go

RE: New MANGA Plus service from Shueisha (global, legal, simul, free, English releases)
Shouldn't it be 9th then? Or is it because when it is 9th in Japan, USA would still lag by some 13 hours and hence the calculation?
Yes.
Both Viz's SJ and Shueisha's Manga Plus are literally simul. Japan gets Jump on Saturday this week, which means Friday on US time. -
RE: New MANGA Plus service from Shueisha (global, legal, simul, free, English releases)
Do you know if they intend to also offer the subscription model (Viz-like) in the near future? As far as I can tell you can buy E-books (volumes) for 5€ each, but that's a horrible deal if one is already buying physical copies of the manga regularly :S
I don't know, personally, but I kind of doubt it?
Because then Shueisha would be competing with itself (??) within the territories that Viz does have its thing going (Viz is a subsidiary of Shueisha). But I can't picture them letting Viz takes its vault worldwide either, since Shueisha wants that $$$ for itself (Manga Plus is making ad money off of Viz's translation/lettering/editing work).
It's a somewhat odd dynamic.

Japan, Korea, and China already have dedicated digital distribution channels in their respective languages, apparently(?). That's why the English service won't/can't exist concurrently.
…The solution there is still VPN.

RE: New MANGA Plus service from Shueisha (global, legal, simul, free, English releases)
Then where will Viz go? Will it eventually be merged / absorbed into this new shonen jump plus service and disappear?
Nope! Different, separate services for different demos.
The Viz territories get the full "vault" (backlog) for sub ($2/month), and three latest chapters for free.
Shueisha's MANGA Plus gets first + latest chapters for free, and digital volumes for purchase. Not a subscription. Money comes from ads.People in Viz territories can use one or the other (or both); rest of the world can (legally) use MANGA Plus.

RE: New MANGA Plus service from Shueisha (global, legal, simul, free, English releases)
And Shueisha is apparently using the Viz translation so… there's some kind of synergy there.
Except for series that Viz doesn't have licensed, the translation/lettering is outsourced to Media Do (take a look at Hinomaru, say).
It's…not quite the happy synergy it seems. But still great for consumers :)
