I sure hope we don't get a 10 or 15 flashback chapters of joyboy make it 5. I am eager for the next arc which will be about the WG. We will likely see Reverie in Mariejoie which implies that high ranking marines will be appointed for security.
Chapter 647: "Stop Noah"
-
-
Awesome! It's so much better than Mangastream's version. Particularly the part where the Sea Kings were talking to Shirahoshi. I was able to understand their conversation better. I know it's such a hassle so thank you for doing this. And of course, thank you to rubia_ryu and Sagippio too! Great job you guys!
Excellent job, Shift!
Thanks to Rubia for the translation, and Sagippio, and the good folks at Chinese BBS!
I wish we could get great translations like this every week. Thanks, you guys! All I can say it I'm no longer envious of the guys who'll be working on the Jump Alpha releases; takes a lot out of a guy…

Yeaaaaaahh…....that probably won't happen.
-
Ahahaha… This comment probably made me laugh more than it should have.
At least someone can laugh about the truth instead about
beLIESve… :ninja: -
This week another guy at ms translated the chapter.
I think the difference was obvious! -
Okay there HAS to be something else to this arc. There wasn't really a final arc boss and none of the other Strawhats had much of a fight either. I can't imagine the arc already being over.
-
joy boy is probably funnier than hordy/hodi/hody/hordi jones
OH, ODA AND HIS NAMES
-
I love all this "eating a sapient being makes you an asshole" thing.
Obviously humans are something above every thing else, and eating them is the worst thing on earth… Really?Sea King's are smart, but can't communicate with Humans.
Calm Belt is there NEST.
If a guy intruded your house (were you keep your children) what would you do? Stay there and wait? WTF
Thats THEIR territory... Obviously they would defend themselves. But then, were did they show aggressive behaviour? Its not like they Insta Kill everyone. The Straw Hats even managed to escape. And no Sea King atacked Jinbei or is whales.
For all I remember, only Rayleagh was atacked. And he was Swiming across. Its not like they were portrayed as ruthless killing machines .-.!
-
Finally. This Arc is coming to its conclusion. Not the best, but it was good all around.
-
joy boy is probably funnier than hordy/hodi/hody/hordi jones
OH, ODA AND HIS NAMES
Did I hear Horny John? :ninja:
-
Yeaaaaaahh…....that probably won't happen.
I should have been more specific. I recall that the new Marine HQ is right after FI near Mariejois. I am expecting a lot of fights against Marines (hopefully Smoker and co). Since Reverie is approaching, I am expecting the WG would take serious precautions if Luffy wants to cause trouble since he is nearby.

Oh, and now we know what those chains were for. Advanced Navigation, of course. -

Do you think Franky and Den could repair Noah? They might want to use it to let the fishmen migrate. Then again, it is an ancient giant ship, which would probably need an army of master carpenters to fix.

thaught of that to and maybe they will do it with the sun eve tree
man so much JOYBOY

Seeing as how Chopper can hold conversations with BIRDS (and most other animals besides), I'd say that the Sea Kings being intelligent isn't a huge stretch, guys.

It isn't a huge stretch, but they were depicted as terrifying monsters by most, and the stereotypical beast isn't intelligent.
Cute singing birds are, of course.

Chapter was cool for me, not jumping up and down but i'm not raging either.
About Luffy passing out like that I thought was the coolest part. He got bitten by a roided up great white shark and his wound started to open. He realized he didn't have to waist any more energy after Shira took over and just decided to take a nap. He didn't pass out in the sense that he could no longer continue, he took a nap because at that point what else to do but rest?
I'm intrigued by the sea kings as well. I don't see the problem especially after the examples already given. Chopper translated the South Birds words and he sounded very much like a human, then you actually have Papag who does talk directly with humans. I'm sure Megalo is as sentient as the rest as well, the animals in One Piece have too much personality to be viewed in the light of the real world.
Glad the main fighting is over for now, hope to get some text heavy chapters in the following weeks.
-
Thanks for the update, brennen!

@gotta<3OP:

See now your getting it.
-
Hmm.. Luffy unconscious. Not sure if obligatory non-Luffy portion of arc (stabbed in Alabasta, in Nola's stomach, etc) is about to begin, or if we're entering arc end-game/party time.
-
its to much forced on luffy destroying/saving fishman island… Whycould not Zoro just cut noah? If he even has a small part of mihawks power (like when he did cut the frozen wave) then he should have been more useful in destroying noah then luffy with his tiny fists...
-
Shirahoshi can't join because Luffy would eat the Seakings.
-
For those of you irritated about Luffy's wound and passing out, maybe this will help ease the pain… and, not trying to beat a dead horse or anything, but this is what I was arguing with Aohige about. Obviously my point hit home this chapter, but one point I was emphasizing then was that, ever since Hody bit Luffy, there was no attention drawn to his wound until after he started Gear 3rd. Furthermore, after Luffy started Gear 3rd, that was when Shirahoshi commented on his wound breaking open, and when we started getting the SFX panels.
That said, I think Oda did his best to make it extremely obvious that Hody's bite was pretty bad, and that what made it go from bad to worse was Luffy straining and stretching the wound by using (of all things) Gear 3rd Gattling. One of the translations I read for this chapter, and it might be a mistranslation, had Shirahoshi saying that Luffy's wound was "tearing open more".
I still think it was stupid.
-
I didn't really have a problem with the Sea Kings thing. It would've been cooler if Luffy stopped it himself but that wasn't really an option so this seemed like an alright way of resolving things. Not as much fun as last chapter but it's good that things are resolved now. Of course many have speculated that this arc isn't over. I won't argue with them at all, in fact I would say that's the conclusion I've come to. One Piece story arcs rarely resolve this easily, even if this is the arc where the Straw-hats show what they're truly capable of. Personally I've started to develop a much more optimistic view of this arc with the past couple of chapters so I don't mind it going on for longer.
-
@gotta<3OP:
Oh, and now we know what those chains were for. Advanced Navigation, of course. -
Thinking about it, with the whole "advanced navigation" thing playing a semi-important role at the start of the arc, I'm going to laugh if Shirahoshi uses a Sea King to "advanced navigate" Noah somewhere else.
-
I'm surprised that people were disappointed with this chapter. I think it would've been much less interesting if Luffy had just destroyed the ship.
-
Welp, that's act one of Fishman island wrapped up. Bring on the next two acts with the dojo and reverie and Luffy destroying Fishman island.
-
Great chapter, great resolution. Should have seen that resolution coming, considering Oda blatantly said thats exactly what he was going to do a dozen chapters back. He's good at hiding answers in plain sight, that man.
Chapter went by way too fast. Lot of emotion, and I can't wait to read this and the preceding chapters all in one go in the trade. This will be better as a whole.
Luffy taking a nap after he sees everything is okay and under control is fine by me, especiall after using gear three repeatedly on a massive wound. There's a difference between taking a break and collapsing from exhaustion, and sheer bloodloss.
Now all that remains is the wrap up, Caribou… and possibly a 5-10 chapter flashback about Joy Boy and Noah.
And the dojo! We still need to see the dojo! Even if there isn't anyone all that strong there.
I wonder if fishmen are going to argue over who gives Luffy a blood transfusion. (If he even needs one... he's been bloody in other fights and hasn't needed it... but it seems like the symbolism needed to tie this all up, especially as its the only wound Hody gave him..)
@Thousand:

Reverie is going to be later in the series. The citizens of Alabasta are only just gearing up for it. Its cover story fodder for some time to come.
-

That would be waaaaay too much of a jump in power level for Zoro.
Cutting an entire ark that huge into pieces at this early in the game would be ridiculous. -
@RobbyBevard:

Dunno, I figured the Straw Hats would have a little "tour" of Mariejois as a preview of what's to come rather than them going there for the first time at the final battle. I mean Oda went out of his way to say it was exactly 10,000 metres above Fishman island and everything (makes me think there's some sort of lift via the Eve tree or something).
Oh and regarding the dojo, Hyouzo said he was the strongest 8 armed swordsman so that makes me think there are stronger fishmen swordsman with less limbs (of course that begs the question where the hell where they during the revolution but still…the fact that he went out of his way to say he was the strongest 8-armed swordsman rather than just strongest swordsman on Fishman island...)
-
Good to see Conis, Pagaya, and Laki on the cover (man, I've made an annoying habit with stating who's on the cover)
Not much to say this week. So Noah manages to stop thanks to Shirahoshi and Luffy, good, good. But is the end of the arc? Surely not, I hope. There's still a plethora of unsolved things that Oda should've touched upon. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and see what will happen next. However, like it or not, this chapter did wrap up things on the battlefield.
Although, I did like the big panel where the crew (and Jinbei) are all talking to each other in their inner circle, where everyone around goes them "THE STRAW HATS BEAT THE NEW FISHMEN PIRATES?!"
-
Chapter was cool, only thing I missed was the Sea Kings saying that Strawhat remembering them of Gol D Roger. Nah, joke XDD
-
I'm sure Megalo is as sentient as the rest as well, the animals in One Piece have too much personality to be viewed in the light of the real world.
Megalo's definitely sentient, you'll remember that he was the one who saw Hody kill the queen and told Shirahoshi later on.
I really liked this chapter, thematically and visually. To me the point of Oda using the Sea Kings to save Noah is the fact that Luffy has become hugely powerful, as we've seen, but he still can't do everything by himself; it's another throwback to Arlong Park, where right before their fight Luffy admitted to Arlong his shortcomings; he can't cook, he can't shoot, he can't navigate, he can't use a sword. Obviously the Sea Kings aren't part of the crew, but the overall message is the same in that Luffy isn't, never has been and probably never will be alone, and he won't be able to become Pirate King without his crew and all his allies. And I'm not sure why people were mad about the same Sea Kings being used from their first time in the Calm Belt, I thought that was a really cool parallel, makes me wonder if perhaps those Sea Kings have been loosely following them the whole time… Doesn't really matter, though.
While I loved the personalities of the NFP I'm glad they were used in fights to show exactly how strong they've become; most of the SHs fighting an officer hardly broke a sweat. I think I'm still a little bit disappointed about Hyouzou... But honestly, I like the way that Oda basically sacrificed him for Zoro's character to show how worldly he's become.
Of course there's still gonna be some Decken and Caribou stuff now, and perhaps an explanation on Noah and Joy Boy... But we'll see.
Also, at this point Luffy, Hody and Decken are all unconscious at the bottom of Noah... I wonder if something will happen there?

Couldnt agree more, i want to see a dojo whith some awsome fishmen

Also, I see a lot of people bugged about Luffy falling unconscious from his wound, but it makes a good deal of sense to me. Hody's bite went through his bones, probably, and close to his heart (he was bit right on his left shoulder/chest area), and after that Luffy proceeded to use a few powerful moves (a Jet Pistol, a Busoshoku punch and Red Hawk), and then Elephant Gatling for a prolonged amount of time (which probably not only stretched his wound wider but obviously made him bleed more). Thrusting two giant, hardened fists at the speed of a normal Gatling and then pulling them back up and punching again for that long can't not be incredibly tiring, even for a post time-skip Luffy.
-
So.."resolved current conflict" = "arc over" for some people?
And that = "move on to New World immediately" for some people?
Just checking to make sure that there's people that don't read this series.
-
^^ But Luffy is going to get way, way, WAY more injured by his future opponents than he was by one Hody bite, and still be able to use the Gears. We all know this. Oda isn't going to make Luffy get crippled by his own attacks just because he gets a few wounds. Remember how Arlong bit Luffy deep in the neck, on top of the multiple bites to his arms?
There's no point in making excuses for Luffy "reaching his limit", which isn't true at all and if it was WOULD be absolutely outrageous, and just accept that he didn't fall unconscious in a "can't fight anymore" way but merely in a "there's no need to fight anymore, so I'll go to sleep for a while" way. He's done it many times and is just doing it again. We shouldn't expect Oda to get rid of this just because it's new and much stronger Luffy, it's entirely in his character to do so.

There's still the possibility Hody has one last-ditch effort left in him that forces Luffy's hand, but that would require them to regain consciousness relatively quickly. So, maybe, maybe not…
-
It was a good chapter. Not the most exciting chapter, but good nevertheless. No problems with Luffy passing out. I think the Sea Kings talking about matters regarding the Noah ship went too far. I can understand them talking about wanting to help out, or doing as "commanded" through Shirahoshi, but that's it. Eh, I'll reserve my opinion on this until later. I want to see where Oda is heading with this.
So all that's left is Caribou, learning more about Joy Boy, and Jinbe joining or not.
-
Perhaps this has already been stated, but does anyone get the feeling that the Sea Kings are aware of Noah's importance? I mean, with the comment, "but Noah would have been completely destroyed…," it comes across as if they are relieved that Noah was saved.
Ah, well, this was a cool chapter. Although there are many complaints about the arc(coming from me as well), I do believe that Fishman Island will be seen in a better light in the future. It may not still be ranked very well against the more popular arcs, but I think that the FI arc by itself will be viewed as better than what the initial reaction was from the fans. And, for me, the greatest thing about this arc was the Strawhats. They are the ultimate reason why I read and love One Piece. Their interactions and accomplishments were as fantastic, entertaining, and memorable as most of the other arcs. So, in that way, FI didn't disappoint me. Oh, and of course, the art throughout this arc has been exceptional. It must have been very challenging for Oda and his team of assistants. And on that point, I congratulate them on a job well done.

Well this arc is almost over. We just need to deal with Caribou, Jimbei joining, a Explaination on Noah/Joy Boy and whose the lucky fishman that is going to give Luffy a blood transfusion.

Man, Luffy's so weak. He can't even swim back. I hope he doesn't get a blood transfusion. Bleh character. Hody totally shoulda owned his ass.
-
I
m actually much more excited about next chapter, because we are reaching "Whats going to happen now" territory again. Where do we go from here? And regarding Jinbe joining….don
t you think that it kinda feels like an afterthought now? While he was cool and awesome and fought alongside the crew, but.....I dunno, with all the other crew members either Luffy wanted them to join pretty early in the arc (Chopper, Brook, Sanji, Zoro, Nami) or their joining was really built up thee whole arc (Usopp, Franky). Robin is the big exception, but her joining was also a giant story twist, which Jinbes joining wouldn
t be. I just think it would feel a little awkward having Luffy just say without any reason "Oh Jinbe btw, wanna join?"But, whatever, regarding the chapter, this end to the "Noah is falling" storyline isn
t the most exciting one in the world, but it
s the only logical story progression. Luffy destroying the Noah after Neptune explicitly stating that it mustnt be destroyed? Yeah, come on. Again, where we go from here is just much more exciting to me. There is still much to wrap up, and mostly things that didn
t have anything to do with Hodi and his crew (cept for the pills). So, how will it connect to the Strawhats? And I still want Den to play some important part in the story. Do something, dammit!"
-
Hmmm, so far in this arc I've been having a good ratio of predictions that turned out to be true.
The enemies on Fishman Island arc will be fishmen: Check (this was made in the Next Nakamate discussion around two years ago, when people were saying they expected the enemies of the arc to be slavers or the World Nobles).
Hody killed Otohime: Check.
Hody's answer to Fukaboshi: Check.
Sea Kings will stop Noah: Check.
Of course, I've not get everything right. Before we saw Otohime's actual death, I was thinking Arlong would have something to do with it, and I was expecting a secret Big Bad to be behind Hody.
Now for next: Caribou will lead us to the next arc, which will be related to the slave trade.

Yes, please, Oda. Skip the entire purpose of this arc.
Seriously. The stuff that is about to come up is why I love One-Piece. Cool fights are a nice addition, but I could not care less about them.
We're about to get some of what Oda does best: Story. So, yes, please skip it. :eyeroll:
