RE: Dangan Ronpa (Translated VN via SA) [Spoilers through DRV3]
Hello, all. I finished Chapter 1 and I'm at the beginning of Chapter 2. Thoughts so far:
Not really spoilers:
! *The first chapter twist is a good one ^_^. Having said that though, you can probably guess what it might be.
*Half of the female cast annoys me, especially the girl who only ever talks about praying to her God, and the dumb little magician girl. The aikido girl is also just annoying for a really disappointing reason. Gonta (the brawny entomologist) and Ouma (the most glib character ever–evil leader of a secret society!!) are my favorites so far.
*This is my first time playing a DR game myself, and what I feared about the gameplay was on the money--it's just a hindrance to my enjoyment of the story. The whole WE SWEAR WE'RE NOT ACE ATTORNEY bullet thing was always utterly unconnected to it being about figuring things out--a pointless gimmick. I especially hate time limits, in any game, but especially for a game where you need to think. So I'm just going through the trials using a walkthrough.Real spoilers
! *The twist is that the player character was the first killer, and it's pulled off incredibly brilliantly. Almost SDR2 Ch. 5 level "I would have never come up with this in a million years." After a certain point, the things Akamatsu was shown to be doing alongside her newfound friend, SHSL Detective Saihara, seemed perfectly normal to the player because none of them would have anyone except the shrewdest players thinking they'd be linked to a murder method.
*It's also amazing from the perspective of building the perfect emotional impact. Akamatsu, the player character, didn't kill out of spite, but rather in the hopes of killing the mastermind. She let the trial go on in the hopes of catching the true mastermind after her murder method killed someone who ended up being innocent, with the full intention of revealing herself as the killer eventually and saving everyone, but not before entrusting her will to the REAL player character, Saihara. In the prior two installments, the killers didn't get a whole lot of build up, but this time you literally PLAYED as her, and witnessed her past, her dreams, her relationship with Saihara and all of her efforts to fight against Monokuma.
*I think the truly brilliant thing about the whole beginning of the game is that it's built around things players often say they'd do if they were in the characters' position. Why don't they just work together and go after the mastermind from the get-go? Why doesn't the main character corral everyone with inspiring speeches to prevent them from falling into mutual distrust? Etc. etc. Well, she did all of that, and it resulted in disaster.
*If I had one complaint with Chapter 1, it's that the first murder itself was a bit on the meh side. That execution, though, WOW -
RE: My Hero Academia - Gomu Gomu no Gentle Fist
@CCC:
Agreed. Mineta is a shitstain, and his sexual assault shenanigans actively lower the quality of a series that is otherwise remarkably levelheaded, mature, and even progressive in its approach to the world. Like a goofy homage to bad tropes of the past. It's embarrassing.
Completely agreed. It's really disappointing because you'd think Horikoshi would be above what amounts to THE SAME "JOKE" OVER AND OVER

RE: Chapter 847 - Luffy and Big Mom
Loving badass Brook! It's about time we saw the Soul King in action (though, upon reflection, it's a bit strange no one's really noticed him as the Soul King considering he was a giant rock star and all)

RE: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Do the Dio Walk!
These are magical!
…but it makes me realize I suck at Disney: I don't recognize half of these
(more specifically, part 5 to 7 on the heroes side, Kira's and Diavolo's)
Yeah, I didn't know half of them either. Thankfully they're listed in the credits though

RE: Bleach Discussion █: Soul Society, but not!
Zampakuto Rebellion was far better than anything in the manga after Soul Society

RE: Bleach Discussion █: Soul Society, but not!
Glib I am infinitely upset that you left out Nel. I know bleach has an overbloated cast of characters, but come on.
Oh shit, I forgot the Shibas too
I'll take their fates from you fine folks: What happened to Nel, her gang and the Shibas?

RE: General Ace Attorney/Phoenix Wright thread
Nice to hear someone on track with me.
Considering that it is a game instead of let's say a manga and AA tends to suffer from poor sales because people find it hard to get into it(and it's been around for so long), there's also the glaring fact that the localisation team will stop bringing games over if sales suffer might be the reasons that resulted into this.In their eyes, they fucked up AA4 because people preferred PW. I honestly liked Apollo and had little to no qualms with Hoboneix. AA4 was enjoyable to me because it felt like an overarching storyline. That and Kristoph was a pretty cool character that seems intelligent enough to have beaten Phoenix. This is also fuelled by the fanbase's dismay that HOW DARE CAPCOM TRIED SOMETHING NEW GIVE US BACK PW AND MAYA OH AND FUCK THIS PHOENIX CLONE NO 2.
So they kind of pull off whatever they wanted to do with Apollo and decided to stay safe, like real safe with Phoenix. But it's not to say they complete ditched Apollo, he got his own story arcs going. However now he's cramming that space with Athena. The problem is that they handled it pretty badly with Phoenix. He is presented as if he had an amnesia and felt into a deep coma and woke up like ten years later.
Now that you brought up the Dark Age of Law…yeah, that is glaring that so far in AA6 it is not referred to yet. Instead of tackling a prominent form of corruption that has been in the game for DECADES, the story instead decided to visit random Kurain rip-off village and set up the same premise there.
Also what the heck happened to the Jury system that the dude strived for years for?I enjoyed it but this decisions really make me salty. Phoenix dialogue really made me cringe hard. Like even if he didn't undergo Hobo mode and everything was successful with his career or heck even if he was in a damn coma, he still wouldn't react the ways he did.
It's just so much more could be done with our characters rather than making it like the Detective Conan of mystery games.
It'd be one thing if they put the jury system on some kind of indefinite backburner by at least acknowledging its existence through some throwaway lines. But no, not even that. It vanished without a trace.
And it's not as though you can argue that a jury system would be unworkable gameplay-wise, since PW vs PL and DGS both used it very entertainingly. The wrongheaded backlash against AA4 was truly unfortunate, not least because I'd argue that although Apollo was nominally the main character of AA4, it was really still Phoenix's story for the most part; Apollo was more of a story vector then. Apollo got a true-family-reveal in AA4, and then some pathos and a dead friend in AA5, but still nothing that seemed to characterize him in any distinct way. AA6 is where Apollo is finally the main character in my eyes, where they give him some REAL meat to chew on. So I appreciated that. It's just so incredibly disappointing that they dropped the growth ball with Phoenix, weakly choosing to instead make his seasoned-ness go a sort of papa-sempai-but-still-a-face-faulting-goofball!! direction as opposed to the world-weary, cunning man he had become after the timeskip.
I will say I do like that they gave Phoenix badass moments of chutzpah–it's always a great character moment when he takes up the defense despite risking his life in doing so. -
RE: General Ace Attorney/Phoenix Wright thread
The Insights…are a funny thing.
They can be tough at times but easy to breeze through in other instances.
Case 3 was fun but by the end of it I was tired by the length.! Having Phoenix get a Guilty Verdict after all this time left a salty taste in my mouth. Granted, he was in a situation that was completely against him and a Prosecutor that is more competent than Payne. This, along with a poor choices of bluffs and slow logic pick-ups make this one of the weaker moments for his character. Sure, the second day he won back and overturned the case but there was nothing he could have done for the first day and it was completely luck that pulled him to see another day. It kind of irks me that this same guy is an experienced lawyer who have seen much worst and hardly broke a sweat. I really do have problems with his Characterisation after AA4. Dual Destinies was one thing because he was constantly playing the mentor role and had an active role of turning the tides of the Dark ages of Justice over so it's all right for him to be out of it for a little. Even then, he displayed confidence and strength when necessary. 6-3 turned him more towards the older(younger) Phoenix with his constant self depreciation and whimsy reactions to people. I get that it is part of his character and all to act this way but you would think a guy with his crazy near death experiences would be more seasoned.
The trial was also messy at times because he got himself easily caught off guard by Nahyuta. Nahyuta is smart but he's kind of not as good as Blackquil nor Edgeworth.I know it's plot but seriously, the writers almost want to convince us and themselves that AA4 Phoenix never existed. The attempts to write that persona of him out is so blatant. They're not even trying to incorporate parts of AA4 into him at this point which I feel they should because heck that will make a better Phoenix.
I understand that it's for the "newcomers" though but it doesn't stop irking me at times.Apollo is actually more fun to read now than Phoenix. Sure, his reactions and moments with Maya and Objections are still enjoyable but with Apollo, there's more of character that is actually growing there.
I don't know I can't conclude anything until the end. I don't remember having this much of an issue with AA5's Phoenix.
This can apply to Maya too, by the way.I completely agree. And it's not just AA4 Phoenix that has disappeared, it's the more complex themes of AA4 as well. That entire game was about how fucked up the legal system was. You'd have thought the DARK AGE OF THE LAW would have continued to address it, but no, they made it about mysterious shady villains being corrupt as opposed to the broken legal system itself. AA5 Phoenix was back to being the old Phoenix, with none of his AA4 wry edge or smirky sadness. It was and still is a giant letdown. Let us see the implementation of the jury system they fought for. Let us see Kristoph's return!
