Chapter 1,043: Let's Face Death Together!!!
-
-
After reading the chapter and seeing those eyes it sure feels like Luff just died for reals, in as much as that he would not be brought back unless what is happening to him was happening. The question still remains if he's being brought back by an outside force coming into him, or if the force is emerging from within him. Assuming that he was truly dead we could rule out Luffys concious will making whatever this is happen, personally i still think the most if it looks like a duck take would be to assume that he was/is being re-born as joy boy as he's a fitting vessel/chosen one. By the looks of it i'd probably rule out DF awakening, but we'll see i suppose.
-
Am I seeing things or is Luffy lighting up in addition to his wounds/blood disappearing?
-
Holy fuck, I can't say I expected the whole Joy Boy business to play out like this…
-
I like Nami's dialogue from the fan trans more.
I wonder if the other CP0 guy will pursue Robin or just retreat to the ships.
If there is more on the Void Century, would be a fine time for Robin exposition based on BM's 2 PGs. I don't think she's read the ones Brook and Law saw
-
An interesting development for sure, but how I will ultimately feel about it depends on what happens and what it will mean for the future of the series.
Of things to comment on, there were some pretty good moments I enjoyed. The narrator saying Kaido was the victor and the CP0 agent accepting his fate at Kaido's hands were both really great. The moment between Yamato and Momo was pretty good as well, with the panel of Yamato's determined look after saying he would die with Momo being pretty powerful to me. On a pure visual level, the final panel of Luffy? smiling is certainly memorable. Overall, a pretty solid chapter but depending on how things play out it can either make or break this arc for me.
-
I feel like we simply haven't seen enough of this twist yet to proper judge it. Is Luffy possessed? Is he an actual reincarnation? Is it just an awakening that somehow ties things together? One thing's for sure, though: It will be a long wait…
-
To me the last drawing seems exactly like Venom taking over Eddie Brock, feels more creepy than joyful.
Might be the devil fruit, devil in the fruit or the hat in the driver´s seat now that Luffy´s voice is "gone", his spirit crushed to the point where he´s no longer in control of his body.So basically the awakening/power up will be something along the lines of Asta´s Devil Union or Naruto´s Nine-tails Mode (EDIT: or Deku talking with how many former users of his power?) after Luffy and Joy Boy become "partners".
Btw. I know party girls, but what are men obsessed with feasts called?
It´s kinda hilarious that Oda´s life-long dream is to have the whole world unified by throwing the largest party ever.
Oh well, at least it´s gonna end on a positive note, with all the crap going on in the world these days.I´m sorry for the negativity, but last chapter felt like like the end of the One Piece I loved and this chapter cemented this feeling.
Luffy is dead, long live Joy Boy!
EDIT: Kaido ending the faceless CP0 agent with the corresponding hat nods was badass though.
-
This chapter is wonderful! Just the beautiful art this week already allures me, and the sheer amount of quality speeches makes it one of the best of the raid. The doublepage where Kaido is declared the winner brings the arc to a new territory, one that you know the good guys will manage to revert at the end, but still different, brutal. Also, great ending to the CP0 dude accepting his fate, while Luffy's heart becomes silent.
But, of course, this chapter is mostly about the last page – "Joy Boy has returned". I get shivers by the way the message is delivered since it evokes a powerful sense of awe. Thanks to Zunesha's eerie and majestic vibe, every word mind-spoken by him is wrapped by this great mystical tone. Zunesha calling Luffy's resurrected heartbeat the ~ Drums of Liberation ~ is just poethic. Beautiful!
I'm thrilled by the direction the story is finally taking! Of course, it comes with no surprise, but I've been dying to see more of the mythological and spiritual lore of One Piece to follow all the iconography and tone which already permeate the narrative. That said, it's still soon to take many conclusions, because we have yet to see which explanations Oda will use to tie Luffy to Joy Boy, and from a thematic/philosophical standpoint there are many ways to understand "destiny", "freewill", "accomplishment" and "karma".
More specifically about what's happening at the end of chapter 1043, I think it's something different, related to the climax of the Fire Festival – don't forget that all this raid has been happening while, at the Flower Capital, these festivities are happening, which are meant to mourn the dead and communicate with their spirits. I'm pretty confident that this will play a role in the story in a very meaningful way, just a matter of how and when. And I believe it's happening now: the ancestral Joy Boy has come from the otherworld to possess Luffy's body, who's the vessel because Luffy is the modern Joy Boy and has mastered his spiritual self (Haki). When the Fire Festival is over, the old Joy Boy will leave and Luffy will be himself again.
I also like the theory that, perhaps, Joy Boy inhabits Luffy's DF – maybe the "devils" inside the fruits were real people (from the Ancient Kingdom?), or perhaps supernatural entities with names and personality. Therefore, the awakening of the fruit also awakens its devil, and that's why Zunesha is feeling Joy Boy. It's interesting, but I'm less sure about this one.
My only certainty is that this chapter is legendary!
-
This chapter broke me. I really struggled with it, to the point I avoided the spoiler thread after the first batch of info and even felt like not visiting the forum for a while.
I hated it on first view. I mean, everything is fine until the last page. I just don't like this "savior", "chosen one" thing that One Piece has been building up for a long while. I much prefer the message of freedom and making one's own fate. I wouldn't mind Luffy earning being Joyboy, but for quite a while it has been building towards other people and fate itself making him become Joyboy, and I just hate it.
I don't like Luffy's power being connected to Joyboy.
I don't like Luffy's power being reworked into something else.
I don't like the entire identity of the protagonist changing after 25 years of serialization.
I don't like that the current enemy may be defeated because of "fate" and a last-minute powerup. So, I've been reading this chapter for a while, each time calming myself and repeating "let's see where it goes". I still have a lot of issues with it, but I'm obviously not overcoming 20-year addiction to the series just because of one revelation that hasn't even been fully explored yet. I'm still hoping Oda will find a way for Luffy to defy fate somehow. Maybe he "becoming" (or being possessed by?) Joyboy isn't a good thing in the end. That last scene unerves me.
Anyway, two (maybe three) more chapters before Volume 103's end. They will probably pack even bigger revelations and/or events.
-
I guess Pudding did already save the Vinsmokes and deleted everyone's memories about it, otherwise, Pedro would be their only hope.
I do still wonder whats the purpose for not letting Zoro and Sanji witness Joyffy tho.
I understand Kidd and Law seeing it, it kinda makes them know where their place in the story is, as silver medals besides Luffy's gold medal, but Luffy's wings not seeing it, is just weird.
-
What an action packed, beautifully drawn, tense chapter full of neat little character moments. Truly great stuff from Oda. Until that last page.
Like a gorgeous symphony that ends in a wet fart.
-
I know one shouldn't shoot the messenger, but I hope Zunesha gets a Blast Breath between the eyes next chapter.
Stupid elephant.

Well… the opening sound of the last movement of Beethoven's 2nd Symphony does imitate his stomachal pains, so there's precedent.
-

Stupid elephant.
Nah. I hope Kaido grabs its trunk and smashes it into the horizon - crushing some unfortunate nearby island in the process.
-
Love the chapter and the story so far. Momo needed a kick in the head. I guess he still thinks like a child. Thanks for Yamato, he clearly understands the situation. They’re gonna die anyways, at least die fighting for life and not as broken slave.
Luffy joyboy was a shock but a great shock. The question here is, is joyboy the title of the power just like Shiragoshi, a reincarnation, a little bit of both, what is gonna happen here?.
Can’t wait to see how Luffy joyboy makes his entrance back to the battle.
-
Nah. I hope Kaido grabs its trunk and smashes it into the horizon - crushing some unfortunate nearby island in the process.
Since Onigashima is destroyed, Kaido would be needing a new skull island.
-
Now that I think about it another reason why this ending caught me off guard is because I always envisioned Luffy would finalize being the person the world has waited for/who's fulfilling Joy Boy's broken promise on Laugh Tale at the earliest. So getting a glimpse of it now that might not even be some temporary Fire Festival phenomenon feels too early.
-
One more thing, regarding the WG and Luffy / the fruit:
1. The WG only knew the fruit (item) is a remnant from Joy Boy / void history.
2. They don´t know what the fruit (power) actually does.So they knew Shanks stole the fruit but they might not have known it was Luffy who ate it until this recent scene where Shanks told them about it.
It´s the only logical explanation I can come up with that ties everything together.
I mean did the WG ever openly connect Shanks to Luffy like they did with Garp, Dragon and Ace?EDIT: Anyone have insight into the Japanese way of thinking? Are the ideals of ultimate freedom less desirable than something like fulfilling a destiny?
Based on the story he´s writing, I always considered Oda to be a really over the top freedom lover (Luffy stating the PK is the freest person in the world, Teach and his legendary "a man´s dream will never die" etc.), which resonates with me well, but the way the story is recently unfolding makes me unsure about that.
I guess I am not the only one who´s not a fan of prophecies and stuff. -
Damn, Zunesha has been counting the days for all the time it walked… and pretty accurate at that, impressive...
-
they might not have known it was Luffy who ate it until this recent scene where Shanks told them about it?
Meanwhile Marineford arc be like;
Hello everyone, My name is Monkey D Luffy, I've come to this worldwide broadcasted event to sing ya'll this song called 'The Fruit Who'sWho lost'.
And this goes like this, Gomu Gomu No Giganto Pistoru♫♪! -
Oda just took a shit on his story.
Bad chapter.
-
Haven't been a fan of any of the reincarnation speculation. We'll see how this plays out in the next few chapters but this coming in an arc that's already overlong imo doesn't make me optimistic about the course of the rest of the series.
-
There's been an awakening.
Have you felt it?
-
Damn, Zunesha has been counting the days for all the time it walked… and pretty accurate at that, impressive...
Senku better watch out
-
Something bothering me:
Is this really the fruit awakening. Yeah, I know, Luffy is surrounded by goo and steaming out. Most likely, it's the fruit awakening.
But then… does it mean anyone with the Gomu Gomu can be Joyboy? It feels... weird.
Earlier in the arc, we saw Luffy talking telepathically when he was about to drown. Again, at the step of death, he showed a power that is clearly not DF-related (he was underwater, even!)
More important, the people of D die smiling. Either just before death (Roger, Saul), or upon death (Ace, who was actually crying just before). And here, we see Luffy not smiling until Joyboy "takes over". Maybe every D that dies is potentially Joyboy, but only Luffy has managed to somehow summon it.
Lastly, if the fruit is the key, then Luffy was predestined to be Joyboy. But it isn't, then Luffy earned to be Joyboy. The story changes completely.
So, is this really the fruit?
Or am I just in denial?
! If it's not the fruit, then the "transformation" could actually be a certain Swamp man that came with Momo and Luffy and brought the Heart Pirates with them may have been watching the fight, saw Luffy being ambushed and is now trying to wake him up.
-

And this goes like this, Gomu Gomu No Giganto Pistoru♫♪!Yeah, this part Oda has to explain.
-
But what would cause a devil fruit to awaken in a dead person? Or even if he isn't dead what about being beaten unconcious causes a DF to awaken? Anyway you slice it it doesn't seem like this is Luffy the person doing anything. Something seems to be done to him.
-
Brook stated hiw true powers awakened when he died:ninja:
So if dead is the actual source of Awakening, yeah I guess Doula Mongo and Shanks had something to do with Law and Kidd awakenings.
I wonder who killed Katakuri tho.

Yes, there are theories that Joy Boy is the "devil" of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, or not necessarily that Joy Boy is a "spirit" inhabitting the fruit per se, but rather Joy Boy is the awakened power itself of the fruit. So there are different avenues to explore the possibility of the original Joy Boy being associated with the Gomu Gomu no Mi, with different meanings and ideas.
If the fruit is the key, I disagree with you that Luffy was "predestined" to be Joy Boy, since he was just a "normal" boy by birth who happened to eat the legendary fruit. Instead, the conclusion here is that many people across centuries have worked to accomplish the goal of delivering the Gomu Gomu no Mi to someone with the heart to accomplish Joy Boy's Will. Luffy ate the fruit by accident (maybe an act of Fate/Karma), but Shanks and Roger Pirates had put a lot of effort into delivering the Gomu Gomu no Mi to someone worthy, they were activelly working to make the Will of the Ancient Kingdom come true, just like 800 years ago the Ancient Kingdom had to do a lot of work to pass on their Will (Poneglyphs, etc).
That said, regardless of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, I believe that Luffy is related to Joy Boy on a more personal level too – either as reincarnation (as understood in Hinduism) or being a different soul born with the same qualities of mindset and heart who inexorably exercises Joy Boy's Will. In my opinion, Luffy is not a regular person, but an ideal one, full of wisdom, empathy and godly willpower -- what many cultures mystify as a Just King (here, the Pirate King).
Why Luffy didn't smile when he died? Well, I don't think he had the opposrtunity since it was all too sudden -- Luffy wasn't doing his slow eulogy like in Logue Town, or how other D. died. And, narratively, Luffy didn't die definitively, so it doesn't matter.
-
The Voice of All Things is actually Joy Boy's… :ninja:
-
I think this makes it more apparent than ever that Yamato's post-Wano purpose with Luffy will have something to do with Joy Boy now more than ever, seeing as Luffy has a big connection to Joy Boy now.
-
Chapter was great! That said, given Luffy's DF, if its a resin DF, otherwise Amber (when hardened), there is some interesting symbolism regarding the material. I really like what I read here:

Hello everyone, My name is Monkey D Luffy, I've come to this worldwide broadcasted event to sing ya'll this song called 'The Fruit Who'sWho lost'.
And this goes like this, Gomu Gomu No Giganto Pistoru♫♪!I probably misunderstood what you are saying, but I meant they didn´t know the fruit power was what Luffy had.
Example: Im, Imu whatever + whole world gang up on Joy Boy who fights in a certain way, he gets killed, they transfer his power to the fruit.
They keep the fruit hidden from the world. Centuries later it gets stolen. They know Shanks stole it, they don´t know what happened with it afterwards.
Luffy using the fruit the way he does doesn´t remind whoever remembers/knows Joy Boy back from 800 years ago, cause he used the awakened version we will see soon.
They connected the dots…they didn´t LOL, Shanks probably told them "hey the one I stole, Luffy is the one who ate it" and they were like OH F...call CP0 kill that man ASAP.So seeing gum gum fruit in action in Marineford =/= Joyboy fruit, understand what I mean?
I am just trying to figure out how they didn´t know until Kaido arc. -

Maybe awakening joyboy fruit needs the right amount of mastery, stress, and conqueror. And the last blow from Kaido made it pass the needed treshhold? Luffy and Kaido has been charging it up by fighting with advanced conqueror Kind of like how you feed your armament to your sword until it turns permanently black.

If we go with the "tree sap" theories, Luffy is probably latex since he's rubber.
But Amber does look more dignified.

My take would be it has to do with Haki. The more control you get, the higher the chances to awaken your fruit…
Haki and fruits are somewhat connected...That's why the Gorosei gave the order to eliminate Luffy because his Haki grew stronger during the fight with Kaidou, and they anticipated that it would happen...
-
So it's either Mythical or special paramecia like Kata
-
I expect that Luffy will have awakening form that will be alike to Enels Amaru form that seemed to be Awakening of Enels logia DF power. Perhaps if there was Buddha DF then there are more Devil Fruits based on "Gods". Like Buddha, Thunder God and now also Sun God/ Joy Boy with Sun part being play on word smile in Japanese. So some sort of festival deity based power. So Luffy awakening his devil fruit would bring out its real form out. As awakening beside changing Luffys look it would make it possible for him to make everything around him bouncy like rubber making everything around move to his rythm- accord. So it would be like Devil Fruit that makes everyone and everything wiggle as DF user sees it fit- for example to rythm of dance or rythm of bouncing around. Like fully controlled rubber castle- would be really broken power if mixed with Luffys fighting style and haki.
Zunisha thinking that Joy Boy is back because of Luffy awakening same power that Joy Boy did. Sun God/ Festival God devil fruit. If there is a Buddha Devil fruit and Thunder God awakening that Enel shown then who knows, maybe all those 3 powers are Mythical Zoans, not fruits we think they are. Oda is bending formula of Devil Fruit abilities so with all reveals and stuff like Katakuris logia-like paramecia, he might bend his own rules once again.
-
I loved this chapter.
I don't know yet what to make of the revelation at the end, but I trust Oda. All will surely make sense in the end.
-
So, is this really the fruit?
Or am I just in denial?
I believe it's the fruit. But I don't believe that makes Luffy predestined: what does it mean to be predestined, even? If the meaning is that there is some in-story force who selected Luffy to be Joy Boy, I don't see any evidence that that is the case. Maybe Luffy eating the fruit was entirely accidental, and whatever ancient forces are behind the awakening of Joy Boy have to cope with that.
If however, you mean that Luffy was predestined because Oda wanted him to be Joy Boy, I can't argue with that. That is most likely the case.

Luckily we should be close to the point of the story where Vegapunk appears and explains everything we need to know about DFs, but we never had an occasion to learn. That should include what awakening is and how it is achieved.
-
Yes, the Sea Kings were very sure that Joy Boy would show up by this time. Same for Oden. That means this event was bound to happen.

The damning evidence are the Seakings mentioning Shirahoshi and Luffy's births happening soon in chapter 968. That more or less implies they're special since birth.
-
Loved the chapter. From Kaido smashing the CP0 agent in bitter disappointment to Yamato giving Momo a much-needed shake, it's all been quite a ride…
...Until the last page; this really has me conflicted.
On the one hand I'm utterly eager to learn more about Joyboy and the lore that goes with him (but then this is Oda so it will probably be another 50 chapters before we get any relevant info)
On the other hand, like so many here I'm not fond of resurrection, sudden inherited badassness and fate over hard work. The story so far has always been about Luffy being pushed to his limits and training like a madman to overcome impossible odds while choosing his path. If destiny suddenly pushes him in the center of it all regardless of what he may or may not want...urgh. There are enough clues to support both ways however, so I guess wait and see ? How the Monkey D Laughy plot plays out will really make or break how much I can enjoy the end game. -
We should probably do a poll to see what option people think it is, Luffy getting just a power up (from his fruit or something else) or joboy spirit manifesting in Luffy.

Or if Luffy is becoming like Habuka too.
-
Could be fun. What would be the potential options?
-Super saiyan
-Full possesion
-Partial possesion
-Split personality
-Spooky voices
-Nothing happend he just took a literal powernap
-Temporary fire festival ghost
-Gomu gomu no revival
-The hat did itThrow out suggestions if it sounds fun and i could throw one up
-
You forgot reincarnation.
-
Devil fruits have a spirit mind of their own.
Why you usually can't mix them. And we've now gotten three examples of them working after death.
-
Yeah, I liked this chapter because I'm pretty sure Luffy's fruit is just awakening. Luffy's not becoming someone else. You just have to consider what set all this into motion and not take what Zunesha is saying at face value. The elders were talking about legendary devil fruit that had its name changed awakening, then the next thing we know they order Luffy to be immediately eliminated. Simple so how are people missing this?
-
You forgot reincarnation.
Oh right. Reborn as joy boy should obviously be on there.
Devil fruits have a spirit mind of their own.

The devil fruit is alive is another good one for the poll

How to you explain the death if you think it is just his DF awakening?
