I love the grifter whose arms go into a gorilla. She showed up a chapter or two ago as well and I just think it’s such a funny design.
Chapter 980: Fighting Music
-
-
The bear guy, Luffy was beating up was fun too.
-
One Piece fans, chapter 598-979: the SHs are just bulldozing through everything, no tension so lame
One Piece fans, chapter 580: can’t believe Luffy and Zoro got solo’s by Apoo the Scrub, bad writing smh
-
I can't wait to see more of that gifter with a giant tortoise for a lower half. I fancy the idea of a bloodlusted berzerker roaring into battle….ever so slowly.
-
Remember when we thought the smile users were just gonna be normal zoan users lol
never underestimate Oda's wackiness

Actually it has been more varied; It's hilarious.
One chapter someone is complaining that things are going too easy for the protagonists and in another someone else will complain that things are being too difficult.

Surprise element of devil fruit is possibly one of most dangerous things in One Piece world when it comes to fights. Cesar was prime example of that.
Doflamingo vs Sanji was another.
Apoo is VERY strong but I would like to see him being taken out next chapter. Also Queen getting KOed by Kong Gun + Asura + Kidds Punk attack would be cool as heck.
He would get back in chapter after it to show how durable Zoans are. Also most of Supernovas seem to be stronger than base Luffy. He gets on top of the chain only once he activates Gear Fourth. Otherwise he is somewhere around medium strong Vice Admiral level of combat power(Base Luffy would have likely fail to beat Vergo imo).
-
I'd actually think it's between sasaki and Drake. Sasaki looks like the guy you would hate. But then maybe queen is suspicious of Drake and without causing a scene plans to get rid of him. Also kinda disappointed the materials Kidd made the Gibson out of considering their at a banquet and his hand is made of gears, pistons, hoses etc. Would be unique to have all the metal that would actually be around, weapons, forks spoons, kegs apoos music equipment. Being picky ino.
Still, could be worse. Like Moria's zombies out of Marineford floor :ninja:

The top five smartest people in One Piece, as of this chapter:
! 1. Jabra, Government Assassin
! >!
! 2. Waiter of the Beast Pirates Nr. 68
! >!
! 3. Kinemon, leader of the Red Scabbards
! >!
! 4. Fujitora, Marine Admiral
! >!
! 5. Vegapunk, Government Scientist
! >!I'm glad that the SMILEs don't affect the brain, even if 90% are turned into Pleasurers. This guy IS a pleasurer, Right?

Jimbei and stealth black, the new power duo of the crew. Together they have the power of a yonkou!
Dumb and dumber duo is dead.
-
Since when were Kidd or Hawkins called Jaggy?
-
Didn't Luffy call him Jaggy in Udon?
-
That Waiter drinking reminds me of the movie "Polar" where that henchmen just quit and leave the bad guy at the end.

Characters getting the upper hand on someone because of their "devil fruit" is nothing new and has been happening since east blue. "Haki" should be a factor now though and yet Oda seems to completely disregard it at times.
I really doubt Apoo is done; he's just started to actually be part of the arc so he will be getting back up. That attack on Queen though would be overkill. I don't think Oda would that because then he wouldn't get back up, ever.
I think you're looking at Luffy the wrong way. He is a "rubberman". He simply makes use of his body and such.
-
There are characters that aren't meant for Luffy and Zoro. That has also been a thing for a long time. Using Luffy and Zoro to show that Apoo is formidable, then they go on to something else. It's not new. If Luffy and Zoro were meant for Apoo, they would be used to figure him out.
Apoo will either be someone else task or an ally later on. This is like saying that Luffy should've been able to defeat Caesar right away. The dramatic sequencing would be subpar if someone (who possibly was meant to be defeated) doesn't get their abilities fleshed out when the writer clearly wants us to see how it works.
-
Even with Zoro shilling the animal people i can't really take them seriously.
-
Apoo is clearly meant to be taken out by Kid.
I wonder though if he really will be done after that and not turn on Kaido.
I'm wondering the same about Hawkins. Is he really done or will we see him oppose Kaido?
-
Hawkins has two obvious routes. Either the odds are somehow now much more in the alliance's favor (last it was 19% for Luffy being alive) and he switches sides based on that. Or just this once he ignores the low odds and does it anyways. The 2nd choice seems pretty unlikely due to his characterization, but not impossible. Unlike Apoo he unwillingly joined Kaido, and Law already beat him as an antagonist, so it'd be a real shame for him to not come and help.
Well, whatever happens, we also we need the payoff of the card he has that lets someone surpass their limits.
-
Apoo's only motivation we've heard for joining Kaido is 'he throws the best parties'. And Luffy wants to throw the biggest party ever. There's room there for a side-switch if Oda wants to go that route. Bege wanted to kill Big Mom basically for kicks, so it's not really that much of a stretch.

The fact that said versus is happening so early into the invasion, kinda points out that Kidd will not be stuck with Apoo for 50-60chapters left of this arc.
-
Right but my point was more about Apoo. Will he be done after Kid's done with him or will he be opposing Kaido after that?

It's difficult to see a scenario where Luffy gains Apoo's friendship without making Kid an enemy. After all, Apoo's betrayal did irreversibly damage Killer, turning him into a giggling retard.
-
What if Chopper cures Killer along with everyone else affected by the fruits?
-
That's actually a great idea. I completely forgot that Chopper was a doctor, so that'd be the perfect feat to his name.
-
I think there's been enough of Hawkins so far based on his handling. He was early. He gave us the kairoseki from Wano deets, his ability was countered in a way and Law got an upper hand on him through the secret character that he trust to a certain extent. I think he's not too far away from switching sides. Maybe the same will happen with Apoo.
Not saying a full blown effort to help the SH alliance, but I don't think they will be as devoted after this.
Hawkins giving Kairoseki exposition - Apoo being used to introduce the Numbers
Hawkins being countered by Zoro after showing off some of his abilities - Kid doing the same after Apoo's abilities are shown
Hawkins being humbled by Law and mystery person - Apoo getting humbled at some point
Hawkins abandoning Beast Pirates when he is needed or fully helping the SH alliance - Same for Apoo -
I don't think it's been mentioned here yet that there are two Meltan hidden in the last panel of the chapter. I was skeptical when I saw someone pointing out the one on the left - a hex nut with a dot in the middle could just be things lining up coincidentally, but the second one with the actual body clinches it. Oda wasn't kidding about being into Pokemon Go.
I wonder of the digital colour manga will manage to give them their canonical pokemon colours, or would that start to become a copyright issue if they were made that obvious?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Actually, it looks like the left one has a body too, my mind just didn't register it properly, presumably because it was sideways, and I covered it with the red circle. You can even see its tail!
-
Wtf! The one next to the hand even has Meltan's tail:
-
What the? Should we show this to Greg or what?
-
Oh wow, that really is Meltan lol
-
Right but my point was more about Apoo. Will he be done after Kid's done with him or will he be opposing Kaido after that?
You'te talking about one of the most opportunistic, reckless and wild supernovas, when he realizes the scale of the infiltration, he's totally switching sides.

Who's Oda's assistant(s)??
-
I think it would be too repetitive if he was just pretending to follow Kaido to backstab him later, we already got that with Bege and Drake. Also would be lame if he was following Kaido because he had no other option, we already got that with Hawkins.
I hope he legit followed Kaido because he thought joining the Beast Pirates would be interesting and fun. But once he notices Kaido is about to be defeated he will just say "well, thanks for you patronage, Kaido-san, it was fun while it lasted, but time to move on" and simply sail away from Wano with his crew without joining the Aliance but also without sacrificing himself for Kaido or anything like that.

I really enjoyed this chapter. Mostly seeing Apoo attack Luffy and Zoro, and I like to see that he holds a candle against them, for now. I think the name of the game here is speed. I feel once they realize that he has to chant and set up an attack, they'll rush him to interrupt his rhythm. I would think he'd be able to predict such consideration from enemies, and he'd respond by being quick and nimble and avoiding close range attacks and making another chant, but Kidd showed us he was a sitting duck. Now, re-watching Episode 402 (18 minutes in), I realize that I didn't like the theme for Apoo at all, and just seeing him act and imagining a better track feels better for me. I'll need to read the manga portion of Apoo attacking Kizaru to see if it is more interesting as well, but right now I'm preferring Manga Apoo. I really enjoy his sudden SCRATCH!! expression. I actually look forward to a full on fight with Apoo, as I think it would be very interesting. I like his poses when he chants. (Also just by the way, seeing Apoo get wrecked by Kizaru's Yata Mirror is really funny) I am concerned about Luffy and Zoro taking too much damage, which is a conflicting feeling for me. I want the fight to go on, but at the same time, I don't want it to drag too long to the point of Luffy not having enough stamina for Kaido. The best part is Apoo's expression after Queen calls them out for not giving a good show. Such a smug bastard, I loved that moment.

Still, could be worse. Like Moria's zombies out of Marineford floor :ninja:
Haha true, was that in the manga I thought only the anime showed that. Anyway more believe zombies under the Marine base than a mechanic shop inside a banquet hall.

That seems like it and is pretty bad writing in my point of view.
I hate discussing power levels because it's what Oda makes them to be.
But Gear 2nd is a very powerful mode and Luffy still should be a god in it considering how he is a haki monster now and was always strong in his base form. Gear 2nd amplifies those abilities whereas other DF users' physical boosting capabilities are questionable. Zoans are there but why would Luffy need Gear 4th for Apoo, Law, Kidd, Doflamingo etc. None of their DFs are boosting their physicality in which Luffy thrives without gears anyways. -

It was hacking away his life.
Thats why G4 was invented. It seems to provide very big Power up not hacking away Luffys life when used. Sure its taxing but not to fullbody Gear Second extent.

Do agree seeing Kidd flatten appoo was satisfying. Kidd will probably give insight on appoos df, probably appoo giving insight on Kidd's df. Waiting for Kidd to shine, Kidd Zoro and luffy vs Queen would be great

Totally agree, Kidd desprately needs some screentime since he is regarded as top supernova and in the race for Yonko. Oda give Kidd some love.

I heard there was some controversy over this chapter over Apoo being 2strong.
This chapter worked wonders for me. I'm into One Piece for a lot of reasons, but tension and stakes are some of the most foremost. The fact that Luffy and Zoro ALREADY have taken some decent blows after just barely stepping foot on the island is… and the fact that it's by another Supernova... it just works extremely well for me, it's exactly what I'm looking for. This entire arc I want to be asking "No, seriously, how are they going to win?" and this helps a lot with that for me. It immediately set the tone for the war. I remember one of the moments I started really feeling One Piece was when Luffy, Smoker, and some of his crew were in the seastone cage in Alabasta and things just kept happening one after another that just made you completely question how they'd ever get out of there, especially with Smoker in there to start. This is the stuff I'm into, I don't like easy rides for heroes.

I tend to agree with you,but i also want to say that its funny how people with similar view can also see things in a different way. Some days ago i've read a comment on another forum where someone who enjoyed Alabasta as well, complained about the fact that here in Onigashima there was no tension because Luffy and Zoro in this chapter were surrounded by powerful warriors but there were too many jokes that killed the tension. I think i agree with both your view and the one of this user. There was a good tension in this chapter, and maybe less jokes would have improved this even more, but i didnt mind the jokes as well.
By the way,i have read that Japan just declared the end of the state of emergency for the corona. I hope this means that One Piece will come back on a better schedule very soon.
-
There is no tension because of too many jokes? This is One Piece. The Alabasta cage scene that is being used for comparison was filled with jokes. Actually, it was what made it so memorable. The fact that faced with death, the Straw Hats just kept having fun and making us laugh while Smoker was the serious guy going "wtf is wrong with these people?"
-
Yeah i love that Luffy is an irresponsible guy because we love him for this reason. By the way even if some people were surprised by Apoo hitting him,i think nobody even thought for a second that Luffy could seriously have been stopped by Apoo or the other Kaido's men.
-
I like that Apoo's position in the hierarchy hasn't been said yet, even tho we've known about him being a Beast since Jack's defeat. Compare that to Hawkins. The 1st chapter that we see him as a Beast Pirate, his Headliner position is revealed. Apoo and the Numbers might have an anomalous role in the organization
-
Late to the party, but I just really dug this chapter. It's always great to see goofy looking characters wreck shit up. And this was a great fuck you to everyone who puts wayyyy to much thought and time on power scaling this series. Go read Dragon Ball.
There were these nice little touches, like that one dude who decided it's better to focus on beer, all the weird gifters and Kid getting more limelight. He's almost like this punk rock version of Luffy.
I get this weird sense that Oda has also grown to like that character more and wants to highlight him. I could be totally off base on this tho'.And I get really nostalgic whenever Luffy and Zoro hang out and shoot the shit. A great team.
-
Hawkins has two obvious routes.
Law should've taken his heart and forced him to support them. Like Kid he should have a grudge against Apoo and Kaido, but he's a realist(and goes by the cards) so he may help them on his own if the cards wills it.
-
Would Corazon be immune to Apoo devil fruit ?
-
Would Corazon be immune to Apoo devil fruit ?
Likely he could be Apoos natural enemy.
Second one would be Cesar if he can create vacum around himself.
-
So I'm guessing Luffy couldn't use his Future Sight ability because Apoo was using sound attacks. Luffy has to be able to see the attack.
-
Regarding Luffy being able to "foresee" Apoo's attacks, there are a lot of factors that could have gone into this.
- It's worth noting that he wasn't aware of Apoo at all at first, being focused on fighting the horde.
- Depending on how easily Apoo can change his attack trajectories, it's quite possible Luffy just isn't fast enough to dodge an attack that moves at the speed of sound, even if he can foresee it a few seconds prior.
- Alternatively, the range of the attack might be big enough to make it impossible to dodge.
- Finally, there's always the potential that Observation Haki isn't capable of visualizing stuff like sound waves. Thus, Luffy might be able to foresee getting punched, but not know the cause of it.
Luffy getting him and everyone else into the cage because he followed the sign saying "Pirates go here" is probably one of my favorite jokes in the series.
-
Zoro: Here comes another one!
Luffy: I know….!
I assumed that this was Luffy already seeing his own future, blowing up due to some unknown attack.
It's similiar to Katakuri back then:
!
Except that Kata could at least comprehend what will hit him, while Luffy obviously doesn't understand Apoo's weird ability and how it operates.
