I don't know, sure the 2012 GOP race was a circus but Mitt Romney generally acted with dignity as the eventual candidate. Given the degree of McCain's recent empty posturing, I'd say Romney is at least his equal in respectability.

Refugees working with a resettlement agency are exempted from the travel ban, for now.
More than 20 House Democrats are calling for F.B.I Director Andrew McCabe to investigate Ivanka Trump's SF-86 questionnaire disclosures. The subject of Donald Trump's tax returns from the past decade has also come up.
The House Rules Committee stopped an amendment to repeal the 2001 Authorized Use of Military Force dead in its tracks yesterday. After it was approved by the House Appropriations Committee with bipartisan (but mostly Republican) support.

McCain was such an upstanding citizen that he let his insane running mate run wild with the conspiracy theories instead of doing it himself.
-
McCain surely changed for the worse ever since his Presidential campaign in 2008, but nonetheless we shouldn't forget that he is a heroic war veteran and one of the few American (Republican?) politicians that, for several decades and the majority of his political career, that was willing to go against the party line for the benefit of his country. Thank you for that clip Aohige, I think it really shows that he had class, no matter what Palin or the rest of his party did at the time.

My twitter feed is split between people who aren't sorry he's dying and people who won't speak ill of the terminally ill. I don't feel super comfortable mocking anyone's death unless they're at least Roger Ailes-levels of irredeemable, and I'm not convinced that he's THAT level of awful. And I'm not sure how much I trust that Rolling Stone article about him in 2008 that claimed he was a huge fuckup during the war, since politifact debunked some of the details in that piece (& others like it).
-
Good god I'm not ready for the McCain hagiographies.
-
man i don't like mccain at all but no one deserves to die from brain cancer
except someone Roger Ailes bad -
McCain's still a better person than half of the Republican congress but his perception as a 'Maverick' is a bit off. There's a good fivethirtyeight article somewhere that demonstrates he basically went in cycles of standard GOP and actual independence. Iirc, there was a correlation of his position with the leadership at the time- I think he was more likely to be Mavericky when the GOP was in charge and more likely to be in lockstep with them when a Democrat was leading.

Trump says he never would have hired Sessions if he'd known he was going to recuse himself about Russia.
Sessions is pretty much obligated to resign at this point. He's also pretty clearly going to be testifying against him.
So the only good thing Sessions has ever done is why Trump wouldn't have hired him lol.

A reporter broke White House rules by streaming live audio of an off-camera briefing
It was only a matter of time.
At every White House news briefing since June 29 — and many before, too — President Trump's spokesmen have ordered a room full of smartphone-toting journalists not to film the session or even broadcast live audio. On Wednesday, one reporter defied the White House by streaming live sound of the briefing online.
Ksenija Pavlovic, a former political science teaching fellow at Yale who founded a news site called Pavlovic Today, used the Periscope app to stream audio of Wednesday's briefing.
The sound quality was poor, but deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders could be heard introducing Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short, who addressed reporters before Sanders took questions. Pavlovic's feed cut out after about 17 minutes, while Short was still talking, but she quickly resumed streaming and tweeted a new link that carried another 31 minutes.
Pavlovic declined to answer emailed questions from The Fix. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
Pavlovic is not among the best-known members of the White House press corps, and her audio streams went largely unnoticed in the moment. The first drew 37 listeners; the second attracted 41.
Yet her act of rebellion marks a significant development in White House-media relations. Reporters have chafed at recent restrictions on coverage of news briefings, urging the president's communications team to allow live broadcasts. Nevertheless, they have complied with the White House's rules, despite carrying devices that can stream video or audio with a few taps of the thumb.
The audio of at least one early off-camera briefing aired live on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, but that appeared to be a result of ambiguous guidance from the White House, which insists that recordings air only on delay. Since then, the networks have respected the White House's wishes.
On Fox News, while Pavlovic was streaming, anchor Shepard Smith was reminding viewers of the access restrictions.
“There is news from the briefing,” Smith said. “We get to listen to the briefing; they just won't let you listen to the briefing. It's the White House rules, not ours.”
The question now is whether Pavlovic's Periscoping will prove to be a one-off or the inspiration for more journalists to disregard the White House ban.

It's weird to me that the guy is given a death sentence suddenly has everyone scrambling to feel ok about thinking he's not that bad.
Of course he's done good stuff and of course he's also done shitty stuff, particularly as a leading member of the current republican party, responsible for putting the worst person possible in one of the most important jobs in the world.
Let's not sugar coat the impact of his legacy just because of a medical condition. Sure, we can be human and respect his suffering and pain, but lets not forget how much HIS party has lacked in the same humanity when respecting the illness, suffering, poverty and disease of others. Naturally, I'm no one to judge, but it bothers me that suddenly now everyone wants to talk about what a good guy he is like pain exempts him from his actions.
-
I've always felt he was the old man who doesn't wanna leave his bubble at his age to learn information that contradicts what he knows. I think he genuinely does want the best for this country unlike many of his peers that are only in it for self interests. But with a 70 year old man in Arizona that knows how to play politics because of his experience, surrounded by constituents of the modern GOP era of misinformation and fear mongering, it's the perfect cocktail for the cranky old man to not be hip with the times and know that where you stick your penis won't effect your combat skills as a Marine.
I think he's a good man who socially stopped developing over a decade ago and is smart and charismatic enough to be where he is today. I greatly dislike how he often bends to the will of the majority of the GOP, even on things he is vocally against. But for someone at the age he is now, you really can't be in this just for corporate interests, you have to actually give a shit even a little about your constituents. He's not Mich McConnell who is just genuinely evil. I think McCain knows his base, but doesn't pander to it.
-
Regarding McCain, I remember how's he's tried to cut veteran benefits, such as health insurance benefits, time and time again. While using his own veteran status to charm voters.
I also remember how my father, a fellow Vietnam veteran, had to struggle to get even diasbility help once the spinal cancer he got from Agent Orange before it claimed his life.
So in short, I ain't shedding one single tear for McCain.
-
John McCain is a great independent maverick except when he isn't.

That's the one, thanks Cyan

Even more so considering he apparently isn't going to step down.

In light of health care repeal and replace not working out the way Mitch Mcconnell wanted. I thought it would be a nice gesture to have an in memoriam dedicated to his valiant effort. I'm sure the poor guy's taking this crushing failure pretty hard.

The guy at the end is the true definition of someone voting for Trump because they are tired of the entire political system. He also sounds like a guy who knows the he made a mistake considering he brought up Americans looking like fools if Trump doesn't work out or proof comes out that he scammed everyone.
-
To be frank, if your response to the American political system being a quagmire is to put Biff Tannen into the Oval Office, you are a sucker.
“Or it’s the biggest scam America’s ever fell for,” Rich Green interjected. “One of the two.”
-
Whenever I hear the reason people voted for Trump was because they were tired of traditional politics I want to scream at them,
'SO INSTEAD OF GOING TRADITIONAL CORN FLAKES YOU WENT FOR THE FAKE OFF-BRAND IMPOSTER FROSTED FLAKES CEREAL!?'
But even that is too kind to Trump which for a cereal analogy would be more like a turd in a bowl.
-
It's more along the lines of "I'm tired of milk, guess I'll just drink this bleach."
-
I'd offer 'I recently heard that I'm consuming more rat poison per month than I thought, so I decided to down this bottle of bleach and slit my wrists in order to purge it"
-
"Chopping my dick off will sure show that guy whacking me with a rake what for."
-
Lawyer and blogger John Bush has been confirmed as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Democrats in the Senate apparently aren't in favor of this because they don't care for his lovely demeanor.
Remember all those jobs Trump claimed he saved with his deal making skills with the company Carrier? Well, they're getting outsourced to Mexico. Happy Made in America week.

Unfair comparison to all the bleach out there. Bleach would actually drain and clean the system.
I mean.
We'd be dead, but it's still more accomplishment than Trump.

If you would like to know what the U.S. special counsel intends to investigate, as far as business transactions by Trump and his associates are concerned. This article outlines their overarching approach.
Fearless leader thinks you're suppose to pay $12 a year for health insurance when you're young. You only get a nice plan when you're 70 years old according to him.

In Canada it's about 30$ a year for a standard income.
Legitimately. No hyperbole or mistake.
Everyone pays a tiny bit into the taxes, and it covers everyone.
So yeah. While Trump is completely mistaken, that should actually be the goal. It's actually not crazy or unrealistic, especially given the population size of the US. A large part of it is things are just super overinflated int he US because capitalism was allowed to control something like health care.

Some local response to health care:
Obamacare repeal has faltered. But Congress still has big plans for your health care.

And a few headlines that caught my attention:
"Exclusive: Moscow lawyer who met Trump Jr. had Russian spy agency as client" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-lawyer-exclusive-idUSKBN1A61LZ"Trump's legal team spokesman resigns amid reported shake-up" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-legalteam-idUSKBN1A6169
"Judge refuses to remove block on Trump sanctuary city order" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration-ruling-idUSKBN1A531K
This one reminds me that you can probably determine how a news source feels about a person by the pictures they choose.

So, say Trump has a coronary before anything serious happens. Would we still try him for High Treason post-mortem?

Putting aside that I don't think you CAN try someone for a crime, post-mordem, I'd hardly see the point, beyond personal satisfaction.

Maybe not "try" him as like a jury and such, but basically say "Yeah, this guy did this thing". Sorry, it's early, and my mind's still processing.

That's a nice thought. But it's not something i'm willing to entertain as being in the realm of possibility right now. It won't happen under the watch of a guy who doesn't even understand how health insurance works in its current form. Combined with the party in a position to make the biggest difference on that front, possessing a similar detached stance on the topic for the most part. Trump's statement just illustrates why there can't be a serious discussion about health care in Congress.

Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, resigned on Friday morning, telling President Trump he vehemently disagreed with the appointment of New York financier Anthony Scaramucci as communications director.
Mr. Trump offered Mr. Scaramucci the job at 10 a.m. The president requested that Mr. Spicer stay on, but Mr. Spicer told Mr. Trump that he believed the appointment was a major mistake, according to person with direct knowledge of the exchange.
-
Bye, Felicia.
-
Spicer was like a real life henchman from a Saturday morning cartoon from the 80's. He's comically incompetent while overrating his own abilities, gets beat up by a leader that loves to belittle him, and will instantly shrink when threatened by anyone or anything. If there was any evidence he was also plotting to become president himself, he'd be almost a perfect stand-in for Starscream.
-
Nicholas Cage has to play Spicer in the inevitable movie.
-
Nah, he'll definitely be played by Kevin James.
-
I wish Chris Farley was still around so we could have a Matt Foley version of Sean Spicer.
-
Oh, interesting stream featuring the guy right now. He's doing a lot of the same stuff as Spicer, but with more charisma and a softer tone. I can see why Trump hired this guy. He seems like an improved, more handsome version of Spicer. Everything Trump values I'm sure.

Also I hope Trump realizes he only has him on the job until he loses to James Bond in a duel, the golden gun won't save him.
