RE: Chapter 964: Oden's Adventure
I like that we were able to see Oden's pursuit of adventure bring out some sense of humility from him. Gives him a little depth I think. I am a bit surprised by how similar his mannerisms are to Luffy when it comes to thrill seeking though. Didn't expect to see that much exuberance.
While seeing Gold Roger is cool, i'm still most interested in finding out how Orochi went from being a nobody to becoming ruler of a country and ally of Kaido.

RE: Music in anime
The score for Princess Mononoke by Joe Hisaishi is a great one. But the one I want to single out is the track titled "The Demon God" and how it's utilized in the movie.
I really like how the music complements the character actions here. How it switches to a foreboding melody as the Demon God Nago turns his attention from Ashitaka to the three girls, then the score ramps up intensity for a chase, taking on a more ominous crescendo once Nago is defeated. The last notes denoting the horrific consequence of the action Ashitaka takes. The score pretty much narrates the scene splendidly. I often hear people say that film or television are a visual storytelling medium, I admire a scene like this because it demonstrates the value of music adding an additional nonverbal layer to the storytelling.
Posting "The Demon God" track in full here cause it's cool.

RE: Chapter 961: The Mountain God Incident
On the subject concerning the likability of Kozuki Oden, I don't believe it really matters if the reader thinks he's cool or not since he's already dead anyway. Still, I don't think one can make a fair assessment of him one way or the other after appearances that span a whopping two chapters.
I'm more curious about what role Kurozumi Orochi will play, I think that's what will make or break this flashback. Seems like his rise to power is what we're going to focus on moving forward. Which would be appropriate because as far as i'm concerned, Orochi is a more reprehensible figure for this arc than Kaido is.

RE: Music in anime
This time I want to look at how music can determine the perception of tension in a scene. For this I will use two versions of the same scene to illustrate how easily music can influence tension one way or the other. The scene in question being the introduction of Cell in Dragon Ball.

Now to be honest, I think both versions goofed up with this scene. I don't think music was needed to underscore what's going on here. With that said, I will say between the two, I prefer the Japanese version. Because the moments where silence is utilized contributes to the sinister aura Cell is suppose to have here, it's too bad the studio didn't just let the whole scene play out that way.
The score that plays in the dub by contrast never stops. In the interest of fairness, the music here does fit the tone the scene is going for. Until the narrator starts talking and the theme music for the dub starts up at the end. This is such a tonal clash with the music that plays beforehand it completely throws the mood of the scene off. Which is a shame, while I think ideally silence is golden for a scene like this, atleast the music in the dub wasn't jarring until the end.

RE: Chapter 960: Introducing Kozuki Oden
I would read a manga about the life of Kozuki Oden, sounds like it would be fun.
As much as I don't care for expository dialogue, I don't mind the chapter being exposition heavy since Kozuki is clearly being framed as a mythic figure. The reader is meant to see him the way people who have met him do.

RE: What manga are you reading and how do you like it? What do you plan to read?
Not too long ago I noticed there was some melodrama on twitter concerning this image.
[hide][/hide]
I discovered the name of this character was Uzaki-chan, I was curious to see if all the commotion surrounding the character had any merit to it. I never heard of this Uzaki-chan before all the fuss on twitter. I got the impression that the people who were outraged didn't actually know anything about the character and were just jumping to conclusions.
Having caught up with Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai (it's an ongoing series), I can say the uproar over the character was in fact a case of jumping to conclusions.
The chapters are pretty short, so the manga wastes no time establishing the dynamic of the two lead characters Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki respectively, who are both college students. The manga has an opposites attract angle going on with them. They have opposing personalities that causes them to butt heads constantly, but it's played for laughs and in spite of that they actually manage to get along pretty well. The mangaka seems content to draw out when they'll hook up for as long as possible, the pair were already acquainted with each other prior to being introduced in the first chapter, so the story is about their bond being strengthened rather than having them fall in love. Giving the story a casual atmosphere rather than a sappy romantic one, thankfully. It managed to get a few chuckles out of me on afew occasions. The supporting cast are likeable enough, the story hasn't focused too much on them. They all root for the two leads to get together in their own ways, but they also have decent chemistry with each other which goes a long way in helping the frequent comedic bits land. The artstyle works for this kind of manga, it's minimalistic, which suits a simple story like this fine.
While there are some fan-servicey moments with Hana, they don't happen very often and when they do it's pretty mild. One Piece has had more risqué fan-service over the years in my opinion. Plus, these moments tend to emphasise that the male lead does find his female counterpart attractive, so I think the fan-service here has more of a purpose than to simply be titillating for the reader, usually. The mangaka does find reasons for the male lead Shinichi to go shirtless on more than one occasion too, but the fan-servicey content does lean more towards the female characters. That being said, I think all the controversy surrounding Hana having large breasts was overblown and ignorant. Par for the course I suppose for twitter outrage.
I don't normally partake in slice of life manga, i've only dabbled in it alittle. The only ones i've read in their entirety is Lovely Complex and Angel Densetsu both of which I like well enough, although I prefer the latter over the former. Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai is comparable to those manga in certain respects. All in all, it's an enjoyable light read.

RE: Music in anime
So in stark contrast to how well the opening music for Ergo Proxy is skillfully used to draw the audience into the show.
I want to use an example of music having the opposite effect. For this, I wish to focus on one of the worst pairings of a song to an anime I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. "Bomb A Head! V" by Akio Togashi a.k.a. m.c.A·T for Tenjho Tenge.
Now the problem I have with using this song for this show is that it's misleading. It makes Tenjho Tenge seem more upbeat than it actually is, while there are moments of levity to be found in the show, it's not exactly a "party" as the song puts it by any means. Music in film or television is not something I feel should be taken lightly, it's part of the overall viewing experience whether the audience is consciously aware of that fact or not. What seems to have happened here is the studio decided to go with something they thought sounded "hip/trendy", and didn't consider if it properly represented what the show is actually about. I think this sort of thing is common enough in the industry to be an issue. This song clashes with the show to the extent I feel it hangs over it like a dark cloud, as it always starts off on the wrong foot.

RE: Music in anime
I figured since this is more about music and not any specific anime this section would be more fitting.
