@Cyan:
This is a horrible generalization and borderline incredibly presentist.
Excuse me if I'm late into this discussion but what did the imperialists and missionaries did right, aside from banning harsh death penalties of ridiculous taboos of some tribes? They just caused only harm. At best the missionaries left the locals alone with their believes and just spread tolerance. Did this happened alot? Big no. All over the world, building churches, putting chlothes on women, teaching the bible was the goal, including condemning polygamy and homosexuality. They were often lucky to find strong patriarchies which would make their mission way easier (see Polynesia). However, point is whenever missionaries or imperialists appeared for just some decades, after that, naturally, christian or muslim believes trickled down in local culture, which happened alot and was, in no way ever, helpful for homosexuals. It only got worse for them.
-
Re: homosexuality and culture debate - why do all the cool debates gotta happen when I'm on my shift in National Service. :B:/
Re: ridiculous Trump poll - Maths nerd here. ~
But it isn't so much math in this case as it is manipulation of numbers a la "lies, damn lies, and statistics".
I remember reading on TVTropes some instance where Fox News had a particularly-facepalm-worthy-even-for-them moment where they had a case where polled respondents for three choices concerning some Republican issue or whatevs actually led to three 'groups' having the proportions like 30%, 40%, 70%. So yeah they didn't bother to make sure it added up to 100%.
What I'm trying to say is: maybe it's the naïvely idealistically Trump-despiser in me talking but I think something similar is happening here with the Trump poll too.
-
What the numbers actually mean is something else. Even a properly conducted poll seems pretty meaningless to me when the sample size is 1000 people and you're trying to slice by ethnicity and political affiliation.
-
This is just a straight favorability poll though and is less likely to be affected by things like poll manipulation.
Like that Fox News poll you mentioned, that could be a situation where they're reporting the results to be favorable to their position.
So you might have a poll where seventy percent of people support a given thing and thirty don't. Of the seventy percent that support it, forty percent have reservations while thirty don't.
Say that it's the Affordable Care Act. That forty percent might like certain aspects of it and dislike others (for whatever reason; twenty might hate that isn't single-payer while the other half wishes that subsidies were more generous or whatever). So if you're Fox News, you would say that thirty percent supports it and seventy percent of people oppose at least part of it and bury the breakdown somewhere in the fine print.
-
The Trumpening continues: Trump's favorability rating among the GOP is only slightly behind Jeb Bush's.

It's official this party is going to hell in a handbasket.

@The:
Lots of history in this page, and quite interesting at that. It's pretty bad that I know very little history of anything, whether it be the country I live in, the state I live in, or the world (I know a good bit of our natural history though).
Any suggestions on good sources for learning history? There's not a particular period or area I'm 100% interested in, so any suggestions would be welcome, whether specific books, documentaries, or just time periods you think I should start with. Thanks, and sorry for the off-topic question.
Start at right now, ask where X came from, and walk backwards from there. Do this continuously forever.

Excuse me if I'm late into this discussion but what did the imperialists and missionaries did right, aside from banning harsh death penalties of ridiculous taboos of some tribes? They just caused only harm.
Generally speaking they usually were a net favorable for women's rights, at least initially. I will also make the same claim about most communist regimes.
Also Cambodia was saved from extinction by the French oddly enough. If the French hadn't shown up Cambodia would almost definitely have been uh….completely imperialized by Siam and Vietnam. As it had already been in the process of dying to both of those for a few centuries. France conquering Vietnam and Cambodia and putting Siam in check basically pressed the pause button on the whole region and on the other end things had gotten a lot more Westphalian.
I mean imperialism was a net bad (much worse in some areas than others cough cough Africa cough), but just making a cartoonish blanket statement almost never works sry.All over the world, building churches, putting chlothes on women,
Except when the reverse occurred.
This is an old style Uzbek burqa. Hint hint.teaching the bible was the goal, including condemning polygamy and homosexuality.
Nope it was about
and this. -
@Monkey:

This is an old style Uzbek burqa. Hint hint.Hahaha. You should read Otoyomegatari. It's a manga by the author of Victorian Romance Emma, set on the Silk Road. All about young brides and the traditions of young women in Central Asia, done in VERY good detail. One of the bride stories is a young wife who lives in an Uzbek area with those old burqas, but most of the story is set in the women's bathhouses where the women can strip, relax, and not give a damn since there are no men around. (and yes, this author draws nudity, but the classiest nudes I've seen in manga.)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/first-amendment-defense-act_55a7ffe6e4b04740a3df4ca1?
In wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriage, Republicans are pushing legislation that aims to protect Americans who oppose these unions on religious grounds. The First Amendment Defense Act prohibits the federal government from taking discriminatory action against a person – which is defined to include for-profit corporations -- acting in accordance with a religious belief that favors so-called traditional marriage. This means the feds can't revoke a nonprofit's tax-exempt status or end a company's federal contract over this issue. But critics say the language is so broad, the bill creates a legal license to discriminate that would let employers fire women for getting pregnant outside of wedlock, discriminating against single mothers.

You think that's bad?
yeah that's pretty scummy, but the difference is we didn't elect that man to office.

"I took a trip to Europe." How about studying to get a study abroad to Europe instead, you spoiled brat?

I refuse to post the link to the story, but all of Gawker is blowing up because one of their writers released a story outing the CFO of Conde Nast David Geithner (brother of Tim Geithner) for trying to set up a session with a gay escort.
Now, you ask, what's problem? Well here it is in bullet form:
The escort, who's identity was protected by Gawker ( though it's out there now) and Geithner set up a session.
Soon after the escort began blackmailing Geithner due to his brother's connections in the government, despite Tim not working in government anymore
David tells the guy to keep the money and to leave him alone
The escort then Sells his story to Gawker, who takes the work of a blackmailer (who had previously tried true same thing on Ted Cruz, minus the gay sex) probably because of reasons below
Gawker, who is in a big battle with Reddit from the whole incident with Former Interm CEO Ellen Pao publish the story because Conde Nast is the parent company of Reddit
And finally, Gawker may have just aided and abetted in the extortion and blackmail of David Geithner by publishing this story, which does not help Nick Denton and Gawker one bit, especially since they are going through the same thing with the Hulk Hogan sex tape trial. So expect shit to go down on Gawker Media in the next couple of days

Spending nearly a 100K on one trip is quite a feat.
Like she had to have ordered the presidential suite or something

according to the article it was more than the trip, she also splurged ..excuse me.. 'budgeted' on shopping for clothing and spring break.
But still.. that's a lot to spend  -
If I had 90k for my tuition I would have money leftover lol
-

Don't you mean 10K? 100K is more than her Grandparents left her.
My Dad took me on a trip to Scotland when I was 15. I think it might have cost around 3K, but we drove through the country the whole time and stayed at Bed & Breakfasts almost every night. Much better than a Presidential Suite.
-

90k would pay the degrees for 3 different students at my school.
And there would still be money left!

stares at the 150k student loan debt from 9 years of undergraduate and graduate school
slowly eats a banana and contemplates becoming a stripper at a club with very low standards
-
Jesus Christ, I thank my lucky stars that despite not being as proactive on the scholarship etc. front as I should have I managed to escape my college years with a debt of around "only" 20k… And this girl blows through 90k in only three years?! Like Outerspec, I'd have a ton of money left over if I had a fund that large!
-
I mean I'm assuming she actually managed to pay for those three years with the money, and only mishandled the remainder which was supposed to go to the 4th year? The article says her tuition balance is $20k, which means probably $60k went to education and she managed to blow the other $30k over the course of 3 years. So it's not QUITE as egregious as you guys are reacting IMO. Doesn't make it less stupid though.
-
Basically she said that, in addition to her tuition, she didn't blow it but she "budgeted and spent" it on clothes and a trip to Europe so even if it wasn't blowing the whole 90k, it's pretty hilarious that she managed to blow a significant chunk of it on stupid shit. Also she reacted to it in the worst possible way on every step of the recovery process. My old man and I listened to the whole interview series on our road trip and got a good number of laughs because of how petty she was
That said for me it wouldn't have been sufficient for all four years and would barely cover three years as well, but still every cent counts and 90k would've totally been rad

Well, openly that is. You can feel free to stab them in the back when it comes to funding programs for veterans, but you should pay lip service to them at all times. McCain himself has made a career of doing that; one of the more memorable moments from the 2008 campaign was McCain getting pissy with a Iraq War vet because of the latter pointing out how McCain kept touting his credentials as a veteran and friend of veterans while voting against any bill to help them out.
Oh, and so long as they aren't a Democrat like John Kerry, if that's the case, you can go to town and say whatever you want about his service.
Anyway, I don't think that will really hurt Trump all that much since a lot of his base doesn't like McCain.

What even is Trump's base at this point? Besides the racists? Really bitter small business owners who actually bought that "run the country like a business" insanity back in 2012?

Apparently a reasonable chunk of all Republcans being asked if they'd vote for him.

Why is McCain still part of the Republican party?
-
Why is McCain still part of the Republican party?
Do you mean, "why is a guy who lost still anything to the party"
or
"why is he with a bad party when he's better than them?"Either way, the answer is because its pretty hard to pretend you're anything else after running for president and he's still a big name either way.
He can still do good in politics, and is a known recognizable name with decades behind him. Even guys who lose the bid for presdient once can still be president again in a later election. (Not in his particular case, he;s too old now, but historically it has happened several times.) Losing an election doesn't automatically destroy all your clout and influence, not unless you lose reeeeally badly.
ALso, when you're at that level, you can command a LOT of money for doing things.
In broader terms, as awful as the lead Republicans are in terms of human rights (for gays, women, former military, imigrants, minorities, and whatever else)… its a broad platform that can have lots of things that you do agree with. Most people aren't based around just one or two single issues, and there's a lot of republicans that are allright, McCain among them. (In an alternate reality he ran in 2000 instead of Bush...)
The party is completely different than it was even 30 years ago, and its mutated into something nastier and made up of groups with such disparate demands, that in any other country, it would be three different parties entirely. A man who was a republican in 1970 might disagree with almost everything from the current party, but still be a republican do to their values when it comes to things like budget and military and the like.

Had Obama said something like this, there would be a thousand times as much outrage. As is, the most offended people seem to be the RNC (who realize that Trump's antics are killing them with the crucial Latino block) and other Republican Presidential candidates. The crowd at the forum where he said that didn't seem particularly angry (seems like more people laughed than anything else) and the reaction from crowds to candidates condemning Trump for attacking McCain seems mild at best rather than the rousing "USA! USA! USA!" chants and standing ovations that you'd think defending a veteran would get.
@Monkey:
Why is he even attacking McCain, McCain's not running.
Trump had a rally in Phoenix last week and McCain made a reference to the crowd being a bunch of crazies; most of the crowd probably supports his Senate primary challenger.
Plus it plays to the Tea Party, who hate McCain for being what they call a RINO. Probably because he's worked with Democrats in the past and doesn't hate immigrants.

Uh…. Zephos? I'm starting to think once again that Cosby is just as creepy as Jimmy Saville. If not worse:
Even as Mr. Cosby denied he was a sexual predator who assaulted many women, he presented himself in the deposition as an unapologetic, cavalier playboy, someone who used a combination of fame, apparent concern and powerful sedatives in a calculated pursuit of young women — a profile at odds with the popular image he so long enjoyed, that of father figure and public moralist.
Brrrrrr…

Nope, Saville is still worse by a country mile.
You're really not gonna surpass the age difference issue alone, nevermind the taking advantage of sick children through your charities thing. -
The closest analogue to the Saville situation was Jerry Sandusky at Penn State; right down to using a charity to gain access to his victims.
-
They're all sick in the head. Some worse than others, true, but really, they're all pretty messed up. In the end, their legacies are tarnished and they will be remembered that way for the rest of their lives and long after they're gone. In that regard they're all equally fucked.
Unless you're really really really really really famous.

Sadly this is what makes the situation all the more messed up. Went from America's Dad to…..well, you know.
