At least Cyprus steals its own money. Greece just takes it from other European countries.

@wolfwoof:
Could you explain this whole Greek and Turk-Cypriot deal.
Preferably with hand puppets and pictures
Naw don't say that. I'm sure that there's plenty of reasons to lynch these politicians.
Or atleast tar and feather 'em. Also fuckin communists always ruining everyones fun
It must be even better if all you have is debt lol
What is there to explain? Before the invasion, we pretty much lived together and got along just fine (and that was still true until 5 years ago when the Communist party was voted to power). Puppies, rainbow and all that shiz. After the invasion from Turkey, there was a forced exchange of Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot population (who for some reason were happy for the invasion even though, unlike in Turkey, they actually had good rights at the time in Cyprus? After that they kinda went… 'Oh fuck' at how oppressed they were. I don't even want to know how the army treats them on the other side and they are all so down and quiet now... Just ask Zeph about what I mean and he'll tell you)
So after the borders were re-opened (Turkey's policy to let money go in a dying half country), the Greek-Cypriots rushed in to visit their old houses, but the Turkish Cypriots started to rush the fuck out and started building lives here. We gave them rights again and houses and stuff because they had nothing, but in logical boundaries always. Anyways. After the Communist party came in power though, they were RIDICULOUS. They got 700 million in excess in the public treasury from the previous government, and they like left with 17 BILLION DEBT. And why? Because they were frivolous with the money and gave extreme rights to Turkish Cypriots while they cut away from Greek Cypriots. Each couple had the right to two houses (one house per person) and a monthly check (again per person) that ranged from 3-5 thousand euro. For five years. Five. Fucking. Years. I am not against helping out those that they need it and all. But.... COME ON! That's just ridiculous and unfair. It was our money they gave away! They emptied the public treasury and c_ontinued with our social insurance treasury._ They just didn't know where to stop.
Anyways the new president, my dad knows him well since they were teenagers… He is a womanizer lawyer, that loves his scotch in the evening. XD But he is a very respectable person too and typical to a T. My dad is very well known in the political world of Cyprus, since he was one of the most amazing campaigners they had. He left though when he got into a fight with our current president a few years ago when they were disagreeing on the Anan plan. My dad was NOPE and the president was YEP. Anyways, at my brother's wedding, he was the only one from the political world that personally showed up to hug my dad and wish well to my brother. Even though they had a very ugly fight. And he will come to my other brother's wedding and as well at my wedding and my sister's wedding. That's the kind of person he is. He is actually pretty intelligent and not a leach (he already has billions in fortune so he doesn't really care about the bread-crumbs presidency offers him xD) unlike the previous president was too so that's a bonus. We'll see what he'll do within 5 years. I suspect a boom in economy in 3 years. Place in your bets people!
lol I don't have any debts 8D I am debt AND money free! Whoooo! That's why I'll start sending money in the USA after August to start saving xD lol I ain't keeping it here because they are too tempting to use-up in stupid things :X

Separate economies. It was bad for ages with some bursts of 'good enough' in certain areas.

Yeah right, i would do that, too. Better than working for 50 years and then dying in a retirement home

What is there to explain?
Honestly i didn't even know there were greek and turkish cypriots.
But i think i pieced it all together rather nicely. Had to leave out the dragon cause it didn't really click with the other puzzle pieces. But eh c'est la vie

@Rogues':
guilty guilty guilty
Really glad to see this.
I read a giant document about the whole case back in December. It focused on the mob mentality of the kids, how the whole town was complicit in trying to cover it up (law enforcement, lawyers, football coach, public officials, etc.), and how Anon (4chan) was largely responsible for doing the necessary hacking to bring it all to light by obtaining and compiling the photos/videos/tweets. It's a shame that only two scumbags were convicted, but it's better than nothing.
-
It always puts me a better mode when I read articles about asses that fuck up their lives. Must be pain to go around saying, "Hay I'm a registered Sex Offender" from when you're 16-17 and through the rest of your life. Their parents must be so proud to raise such fuck-ups with dreams and aspirations that'll be remarkably hard to realize now they have this blemish on their record.
-
@Rogues':
guilty guilty guilty
Well, I'm assuming they weren't tried by a Steubenville jury.
I'm glad that we got this verdict. Sure, they'll only get a few years, but the verdict is more significant because it serves as a barometer of regional attitudes. Aaand those scumbags will be registered as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

What's incredible is how upset everyone is there. Like, it's such a colossal heartbreaking disappointment for all of those people that their kids are going to carry that brand forever and have to go to juvenile detention and shit. Like their response is just one of stunned awe
Specifically I mean the kids more than anything, since it's obviously understandable a parent is upset. The two defendants are like "WHOA THIS WAS A PRETTY BAD THING HUH…" despite having gone above and beyond the call of duty in being really extra despicable rapists
-
Their tears of anguish are both satisfying and delicious. I do hope karma rams them in the ass during the prison shower sessions.

Rape culture. Ohio.
-
They really were blindsided by the fact that they did anything wrong at all. It's the thinking of drunken party-mad football goons that drunk = consent, and that rape is confined to cartoon alley muggers with knives and bandanas
-
So what's this I hear about CNN sympathizing with rapists?? Wow, I used to think CNN is better than Fox, but now I see that they full of giant assholes too. How has Fox been handling this news? Part of me would really love if Anderson Cooper smacked down pundits on the same network as him, although I'm sure there's probably some shit about how that's not "socially acceptable" to do on television. who knows. I sort of get this impression that he's the only decent human being on that network, but I'm sure that can't possibly be true.
Oh and this is an article I found on Fox's website:
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2013/03/16/american-teens-gripped-by-epidemic-that-crushes-empathy/
-
Just came to post that actually…
CNN's take is just stupidly sensationalist (crying about the lives of "good students" being ruined is more dramatic than dry legal proceedings), but what more should we really expect from the network with the holographic correspondent projector?
It is sickening though. And Keith Ablow? Generalizing it to an "epidemic" that abstracts the matter away from the rapists and tries to excuse their behavior? Yeah he can go to hell.
-
what a powerful, emotional victory. I feel so elated.
They were allowed the freedoms of young adults, yet lacked the maturity to handle that freedom.
-
I also saw a someone post pics of CNN's twitter. essentially using language like "good students" to describe rape that happens in America vs. "men" raping women in other countries. I hate living in a country that tries so hard to pretend like we're better than everyone else or that bad shit doesn't happen here when it so clearly does. Then you've got a whole lot of idiots saying that calling out the bullshit is feminist when being really outraged at crimes that have been committed. No, it's actually called not being a terrible person who essentially supports rapists by making excuses for them.
-
Terminally ill man wins a marathon while pushing his daughter around. Truly sweet stuff.
-
CNN really is just as bad as FOX. As deceitful as FOX is, at least they have an underlying belief system which they believe justifies their behavior. CNN is just a shameless ratings machine scarcely better than any tabloid.

I realise, but that was the only other link I could find at that time. The other one only talked about the guy being arrested.

Also I found out North Korea actualy owes us money.
So I am now fully qualified to complain about it being horrible.

I confess I didn't read the article, but only on account of having heard about this at the time; I'm making this post assuming it's the same article.
It's basically a textbook case of misleading reporting. The big, noticeable headline is that 'local man has been arrested for collecting rain water!', which is wonderful for eliciting reactions against that crazy government, overstepping its bounds, I mean everyone can agree that's ridiculous, right, so let's go straight to the comment section and rant about it and not bother reading.
Which, coincidentally, if you did (read the rest of the article, that is), you would discover that in addition to collecting rain water, the guy was basically diverting water from a local river, upstream of where it would get to and be used by the rest of the town, for his own purposes. Which, you know, is kind of a far more serious thing.
If I get a chance I'll try to look through the article, see if it's the same one, and link what I'm talking about; but at any rate, I have no doubt this is at the very least the same event, as I remember hearing about it at the time, so as I said: textbook sensationalism.

Harrington pointed out that the state had broken their own law by issuing permits to individuals allowing them to divert water from public supplies, whereas Harrington was merely collecting rainwater that fell on his own property and was not taken from municipal supplies.
So you say that this part is a lie? ^

It was also mentioned at CNS

and other places too.
A bit unsure about the actual details now, due to conflicting sources.

It's good to see ACTUAL rapists convicted of, well…rape. Truly. The way these boys were treating her was absolutely horrible.
Though... To be honest... I've seen quite a few false claims of rape in my lifetime (22 years) from women it isn't even funny. It can be like a woman's ace-in-the-hole when a man wrongs her in anyway, shape or form, so that they can stroke their ego and say "now look who has the last laugh!"
I'll tell you one thing: If a woman ever falsely accused me of raping her, and I found out and wasn't found guilty (I guess the term would be), I'd destroy her life so bad she'd be better off killing herself. Even if you are cleared of such charges etc. that...statement can stick with you forever; it tarnishes your reputation no matter what.
-
Their sentence isn't enough of a punishment though. Can someone tell me how they decide what an average sentence will be for particular crimes? Do they ever change it?
-
@No:
If a crank conspiracy website ain't good enough for you, then how about a website that hits readers up for donations because it ain't supported by the guvmint run lib'ral media?
Seriously?
Anyway, this is another article that is really lean on actual information, but I note that he was charged with having three different reservoirs on his property. Most people don't just build three ponds to collect rainwater.
-

They're juveniles.
In the United States, if you're a juvie and convicted of a crime, then your sentence is usually much lighter. Unless your crime is like…mass murder, and mass kitty and puppy theft.

You can tell that just by reading his quotes.
My guess is that these are three fairly deep and sizable ponds along with drainage ditches, which are probably collectively big enough to actually affect the local water table.
-
Heh and here i thought i was making a good observation. Guess you guys are so used to that that you'll spot those kind of things in your sleep
One thing i can't really grasp about that rape case is how important sports seem to be for the citizens of that town. Is tossing a ball really THAT big of a deal stateside?

Getting a real bad vibe of apologist bullshit from that article. As if hard times in Middle America somehow excuse being morally corrupt.
