Matt Owens loves both Skypiea and Davy Back, but doing a whole season on those controversial arcs is way too dicey (co-producer Shueisha must be aware that even Japanese volume sales went down during this period).

That's mainly why I was thinking in terms of elements to support that season, stuff that churns the major story beats along while the straw hats are off gallivanting in the sky: Aokiji and Akainu, Ace and Blackbeard, Shanky, and Whitebeard, Buggy, etc.

I sincerely doubt that skipping Skypiea is on the table. Not to mention Skypiea very much contextualizes Robin's place in the crew and increases the stakes that make Water Seven so good.Whereas pulling in Foxy (but more importantly Aokiji) was a means to make it so Jaya+Skypiea doesnt have to be stretched to fill eight episodes. It's perhaps the only season (unless you think Thriller Bark and Sabaody will be a season, which lol) where the concern would be finding content vs. cutting it.

Unless they divide Water Seven and Enies Lobby between the second quarter of season 3 and the first half of season 4. Which isn't... a horrible idea. Bookending season 3 with Robin's joining and Robin's betrayal is inspired. Season 4's first half being Rocketman to Enies Lobby with the latter half being Thriller Bark and Sabaody could work, freeing up season 5 for the war.

If season 3 could expand to 12 1 hour episodes, I would pitch a Luffy as a 100 Million Man season that has Skypiea saga be 4 episodes and Water 7 Saga be 8 episodes. It’d be super condensed, but doable.

I don’t hate the idea of a season 3 Water 7 cliffhanger though. I like the idea of Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark being combined into a season, with Sabaody as a finale for season 4.

Thriller Bark and Marineford saga was always the more awkward placement for adapatation as Thriller Bark or Thriller Bark + Sabaody is definitely too short to be it’s own season but adding it to Sabaody-Post War is definitely too long for one season, unless it’s also an expanded season more than 8 episodes.

The cliffhangers of everything falling apart in Water 7 and Sabaody would also entice people to anticipate the next season as well, though they’d have to be confident that the series will continue to leave it at such a cliffhanger.

The only problem would be finding a thematic throughline for season 4. At least as Kitsune mentioned, season 3 begins with Robin joining and ends with Robin “betraying” the group, so something could be written in that aspect to make it an arc. Season 4 starting with a second half to a resolution only to end on another cliffhanger…not sure how season 4 could be thematic. But that’s Thriller Bark as a whole. It’s it own thing but kinda a breather in its own right.

Am I the only one who didn't enjoy Skypeia as much as others seem to? I mean, still liked it, Enel is a great villain, but I was ready for them to get off the cloud.

No, as has been said in this thread, it's a famously polarizing arc.

I love it but even it shudders under the weight of early pacing issues. I'm watching the anime with my partner as we speak and we're on episode 184, all that's really left if the love rescue, giant jack climb, the Calgara flashback and Luffy vs Eneru but that takes 11 whole episodes rip. It's like "let's go already"

I have to reread in the Manga to compare its pacing there though.

Up through Alabasta they'd been doing two or even three! chapters per episode so it was all tight and flller free aside from a handful of full blown filler episodes.

Skypeia is the first time they had to deal with a multi-year arc in one location and started slowing the pace down to 1 or 1.5 chapters per episode. it started pacing a lot slower then, but they still actually ahd multi-episode filler arcs between sagas to pad time.

Water 7 is when they started embracing 1 chapter per episode in full and it got abysmal.

@Satsuki I appreciate it as I got older. There's something about the whole Calgara and Norland flashback that really gets me as I mellowed with age. Later arcs also lack the charm and adventure centric (we're here solely because of adventure) that Skypiea had.

I just confirmed even in the Manga there are a whole 20 chapters between Luffy falling off the Maxim and the end of the arc, with Eneru finally going down after 16 chapters.

That roughs out to a little under 2 chapters per episode which isn't all that different from Alabasta or Drum, they still rough out to around 2 chapters an episode each. Three chapter episodes largely died out early in east blue.

So I would argue that there's even a drag in the Manga there. 7 of those 16 chapters are the flashback though but it still takes like four chapters to figure out cutting down giant jack. Really?

Either way to reign the topic back in a little I do agree that Skypiea having to support a whole season by itself (or well along with Jaya), despite being technically the longest arc pre timeskip, is a rather tall order. It's up to the team how they eventually divvy it all up if they even get the chance, and I'm sure even then we'll be disappointed by it on same level lol. So I just thought I'd throw another imperfect idea into the ring.

I'm not loving the idea of splitting Water 7 and Enies into separate seasons but I wonder if there's something that could chain Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, and Sabaody together...

The threat of Luffy losing the crew he's been putting together perhaps?

If we begin season 4 after Robin's betrayal, the crew is fractured and Luffy realizes this, leading to the development of the Gears. He manages to pull Usopp Robin back and recruit Franky, but they lose the ship that bound them together in the process. Also every single one of Luffy's crew is now a wanted criminal, not just Luffy Zoro and Robin.

Then Luffy meets Brook who has lost his crew and sailed the ocean alone ever since. The life of the crew is in jeopardy thanks to Moriah's shadow theft and though Moriah is defeated, Zoro makes an important sacrifice to take Luffy's pain but manages to survive but of course barely.

Then they reach Sabaody and all hell breaks loose, culminating in Luffy's ultimate fear realized: the total annihilation of his crew.

Loss is a good throughline with Thriller Bark and Sabaody. Moria is the example of being a loser of the New World and what that could lead to, and Luffy has to overexert in order to beat Moria, not to mention Kuma appears to prove they are outclassed. It’s just starting the season off with Enies Lobby contradicts all that, or doesn’t mesh well with it. If anything, that shows Thriller Bark would be a good prologue to the Marineford saga which was all about loss and losing and have that all be a season, but again, that would be an incredibly stuffed season.

If you are rearranging things, maybe move the Davy Back Fight and Aokiji meet up to after Enies Lobby and have it at the start of season 4 to kick off this notion of the Straw Hats having bigger threats that they can’t beat yet. But then you’d have to rearrange a lot of the Aokiji/Robin throughline that’s important to Water 7 and remove the getting stronger part that’s important for the Enies Lobby upgrades…Plus again, DBF + Thriller Bark + Sabaody does not sound like an solid season on its own.

Finally finished episode 4. Based on Skypiea's necessary content, it's 1 of the shortest arcs out there when it comes to those large chapter count arcs. Skypiea is no more than 4 episodes based on how they've treated some of these arcs.

Before I can get to the plot points, just cutting out characters like they've already done is enough.

It's also Oda's thing in each arc where he's not just trying to let everything breathe, he's also managing the crew so everthing isn't so easy. His favorite move is to split them up. Them being together would end most arcs 3x faster. Zoro in a well. Luffy poisoned.

Simply take out Conis and a bulk of that intro that isn't necessary to tell the story and replace it with the crew witnessing Enel's oppression like they did with Buggy/Orange Town in a less detailed and drawn out manner. Even before that, Jaya is like 75% of an episode max and use the last section of the episode to enter Skypiea.

• Don't need the "come back and help us God" subplot, so Conis and "Kami" are out of here. Reduce them to cameos or nothing at all
• Aisa out of here too. Wyper can even be amalgamated with Kami, which puts Skypieans and Shandians into 1 group - 2 birds, 1 stone.
• Nola saves so much too. Get it out of here

Essentials to tell the story

• something to alert the crew to a Sky Island, means to get there, do they have to meet BB Pirates here? Nothing came out of it that was essential. Can make Cricket the one who alerts them to it and helps them with preparing to go, instead of the treasure dive.
• enter setting, witness oppression
• flashback can be mixed down to whatever fits Cricket and locals
• take bad guys out (Robin taking out Yama is an essential)
• Party

They spent like 9 chapters checking Angel out before Luffy goes "I gotta save my friends". This is why I liked watching this. Oda lets it breathe. Don't need to do that in the live action. See the place, see the problem, beat the brakes off the problem, throw a party. Sometimes there's no party too, so that makes it easier.

Dwindle Enel's goons to 4 - Yama, Gedatsu, Ohm, and Satori

Just have Enel beat up Wyper as the princess of the arc before Luffy shows up.

Yeah, this is 3 episodes and only due to the 1st episode being some rendition of Jaya and initially entering the place. The meat of the arc is after that and only 2 episodes. 1 to see the place, flashback for locals and part of the crew getting mixed in Satori's mess before beating him that pisses off Enel. 2nd episode is taking down other 3 lackeys, flashback for Cricket as Wyper gets spanked by Enel.

This show has not spent long on fights. They are quick and the build up/theatrics before it are what take up the episode.

I can easily see
2nd season

• Logue Town and leaving - 1 and a half episode
• Reverse/Whiskey optional really. Mix elements, match elements, whatever they do, doesn't require more than 50% of an episode.
• Little Garden - 1 and a half
• Drum - 2
• Last 3 episodes
  1 - Enter Alabasta and Ace helps them escape Smoker with Luffy losing to Croc as the cliffhanger.
  2 - Crew fights, war, race to stop bomb, and Luffy making his way back.
  3 - Luffy enters. Has the upper hand, lose to Croc, Return and win. Party, escape.

@Cockycent I don't think anyone's arguing that you can't do Skypiea in 3-4 episodes so much as it is there is no solid way to work around it in a structure that supposes 8 episodes a season, that supposes Season 2 is Baroque Works and will almost certainly climax with Alabasta, that supposes that Water 7-Enies Lobby is 6-8 episodes itself, that supposes Skypiea cannot be skipped. It's like a weirdly shaped puzzle piece that you can't just dispose of but no matter how you fit it into the larger puzzle, it's going to be awkward.

3 episodes for Jaya and all the important things that happen during it (you can skimp on Skypeia as much as I hate to admit it, but you really cannot skimp on Jaya), 1 episode of getting to Skypeia, 4 episodes of Skypeia itself with the last episode being the party and return to the surface, seems simple enough.

The other thing to note is that the show runners have thought up to a “season 6” which they think is about the halfway point, and think the series could be adapted for 12 seasons.

I think it’s a fair assumption to say that their theoretical season 6 goes up to the timeskip, so yeah a whole season on Skypiea isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. Just couldn’t imagine the split between seasons 5/6 (presumably Water 7 saga is a season by itself). Guess from the length Thriller Bark and Sabaody is comparable for an arc length, and thematically the story would be loss, just seems not as meaty as other sagas…

Personally, I'd make S3 just Skypiea and Jaya, but use the season length to expand a little more in stuff outside of the strawhats. S1 already showed they want to do that. S3 already starts with Blackbeard, Whitebeard and the Shichibukai summit, so you coupd build more scenes on those. Maybe show more of what Mihawk is up to before going to the meeting, and have him meet Shanks again. Doflamingo could also get a lot of extra content since we have new info from Dressrosa (i e. his crewmates). Same with Kuma and the revs/Bonney.

Also perhaps expand more on Buggy (who disappears around this time of the story, but is a great character especially in the show). Or show Ace's adventures (an adaptation of his cover arc, with some changes to make it less childish). And there are always Garp and Koby, as well as Smoker and Tashigi.

I think the show likes its climatic endings, and Skypiea is just more climatic than Davy Back Fight. Water 7 could be done, but I'm not sure if Enies Lobby has that much content for just a season, and that's definitely where you want to end S4.

It occurred to me the other day that Garp isn't really necessary to Post-Enies Lobby since we've already got all his major beats in this first season. Really the only thing he'd offer now is the chance to show Coby and Helmeppo's growth. It's an opportunity to work in additional beats, expand on Aokiji, or introduce a different WG-allied antagonist early.

Basically, if we're looking at six seasons through Marineford, we're left with a similar problem as Skypeia with Thriller Bark. It's important but other things flow too smoothly to be broken up too much. Sabaody works as a two episode cliffhanger but that's still only 6 episodes at most. So what about moving post-EL to the start of Season 5? It's certainly not perfect but it helps the episode count and could serve as an intro re-establishing everything. Season 5 would conceivably focus on broadening the world and establishing how small the Strawhats are in the scheme of things. The Supernovas establish other adventures have been happening, the Celestial Dragons exemplify the World Government's unconcern for the common man, and Moria of course is a villain whose dreams were broken by the strongest forces in the world. Parts of Post-EL could be retooled to emphasize that despite Luffy's rising star, he's still relatively small in the scheme of things. Emphasize that few independent pirates continue to thrive beyond Luffy's bounty. Perhaps introduce the Emperors in full.

You'd probably want to move up Usopp's rejoining to Enies Lobby in order to capitalize on that character arc, but I think it could work overall. Better than 5 seasons through Marineford? Probably not. But it'd even out episode counts and potentially make for a smoother season.

It's a possiibility, but it retains the problem it had in the original run.

However much it means to the overall lore in the long run and secrets we still haven't gotten to, however much its a true fun adventure, with some actual pirating and swashbuckling in it, with some great moments in it and an amazing flashback...

It's an arc that happens immediately after introducing new warlords, Blackbeard, showing Luffy is a big name 100 million man now... and then it dodges ALL those plot arcs and Marine stuff for an arc.

That 2 year/1 season detour is fine now on the scale of a 30 year series... but that's just really, REALLY awkward for the casual audience. "What happened to all this other stuff that was going on? What's the point of being here?"

Obviously a LA reqrite can sort of adress this by having another cut away B plot but... cutting away to Garp? Smoker? again in a completely unrelated side story would just emphasize the point that it wasn't clearly connected to anything.

That's why its so rough. Unless they cut it down to just a mini-arc mid season and then it's fine.

You gotta make changes and cut characters and condense to make things work, but oof, erasing the entire conflict between ground people and sky people seems like it would rob the arc of most of its identity.

Obvously cut back the fiights and the crew splitting up and Enel's death elimination game but... merging the two groups seems a step far unless they really whittle it down to nothing.

I think they could do a whole season for Skypiea if they'll add a season-long storyline with Ace's hunt for BB.

Ace getting an extended storyline like Garp/Coby/Helmeppo is a no-brainer. He's a fan-favourite and it's very important to build emotional attachement with the audiance for later season.
They could come up with one cohesive storyline that would encompass Ace's hunt, shichibukai introduction, WB introduction, buggy's search for Captain John's treasue (which WILL pay off soon in the manga, I'm sure), and maybe tie it up with Wapol's/BW coverstories and maybe even some other stuff. This way the season would not feel so detached from the rest of the story.

While SH's are having, what many will think, a side-adventure, the world will still keep moving on and build hype for the future.

Pacing is one of the advantages of Live Action. So spending more then 4 episodes max in Skypea to me would be problematic. Preferably max 3.
Thats a 3-4 hours movie. You can tell a shitload of story in that time. So think of it like telling a nice adventure in the sky the shortened edition

like

1. They come here to Skypea
2. They see people acting weird
3. They get "tricked/placed as an offering"
4. They get pissed off and want to wreck Enel for it
5. Meanwhile Shandians and Ganfall are introduced they want to wreck him too. One was former god. Others fighting against the entire Skypeans for long ass time
6. Enel has some badass servants and priests
7. Enel says its a death game
8. People get wacked left & right
9. Luffy doesnt go into snake instead they split up Merry gets attacked blah blah Usopp sees Merry repaired
10. They kick everyones ass Robin finds the golden city
11. But then shit.... Enel demolishes all of them Luffy is busy cause Enel put a giant ass golden ball on his hand in a first confrontation. And kivked him off the ship.
12. Enel takes Nami on his Maxim ship Sanji and Usopp save her
    Luffy comes back up and kicks his ass rings the bell
13. Party time, gold time, time to steal the treasure and bail out
    The end

You dont need more then 3-4 episodes to tell it.
You need more if you wanna

• explore jungles
• travel the white road for half an hour
• camp in the jungle
• fight for hours
• goof around with the marines at the beach
• meet Gan Fall at the entrance
• take hours to tell Nolands story that was briefly described in season 1
• want a snake to eat Luffy and Luffy to search for exit for 2 episodes

If they're actually aiming to adapt the first half of the story in 6 seasons, there's no way Skypiea doesn't get a full season in my opinion.

S1 is East Blue, S2 has to be Baroque Works, S3 goes to Jaya/Skypiea and S4 is Water 7/Enies Lobby. All these story arcs last more or less the same amount of chapters in the manga, and could serve as natural end points for a TV season.
Sabaody to post-Marineford could also be a season, though I'm not sure where Thriller Bark fits. But that's an arc they can't skip.

That's all very far into the future though, for now I'm just pumped about Alabasta

Thats 6 islands they visit...
Staying on one or two the entire season slows down the progression of the adventure feeling and we all felt it in Skypea.
For the love of god everyone. Forget about the number of chapters but rather what those chapters are about a lot of them are about fights and goofing around etc, easily skipped

Skypeia and Alabasta make the most sense to me as one season(Although I'd probably put Skypeia on the road to Alabasta and maybe Luffy's inspiration to finding the element that reacts to Crocodile element). That gives little garden , chopper's island, Albasta, skypeia.

then one from archipelago to the war(so archipelago, amazon, Imperel, marineford) .

My real issue is really water seven era because I dont think you can really shove that much more stuff in there and make it feel like a coherent creshendo. Thriller Bark is a pretty random follow up to it. And there's not that much island to explore.

Budgets for sets also probably will play a part in limiting multiple fantastical islands being part of the season. The Baratie ship was used in more episodes than needed; it was a whole set that was built and would’ve been a waste if just used for one-two episodes.

For the Alabasta saga we’re already speculating which aspects of the world won’t be translated to save money. It would be a trade off in living in the truly fantastical world vs going multiple islands. East Blue had it easier because most things were grounded in reality.

Like Wheel of Time had to make a Tar Valon set in season 1 and spend two episodes there because they needed at least one permanent set built in the first season, even though the books didn't get there till later.

We might actually see a lot more of Merry for that reason.

I keep seeing y'all mention the possibility of doing movies for Skypiea and Thriller Bark, but is that an actual practice that studios are doing? I've never seen a live action show do a movie in the middle of its run before. I've seen movies AFTER the fact, or "movies" as pilots to TV shows but I've never seen a live action show do like a movie between seasons 4 and 5 before. I'm having a hard time envisioning that because that sounds ungodly expensive.

Don't mean MOVIE movie, like they up the budget and release it to theaters. (But there are examples of that like Transformers, MLP, X-Files, Dark Shadows, Simpsons, Pokemon, Batman 66, South Park, etc. )

Just they break up the seasons in a slightly different way in order to lessen the big breaks between seasons, which streaming can do.

"We have these three episodes that work as a standalone story. Release that in December of 2025 instead of waiting until October 2026 for the entire season to be done.

Doctor Who does it EVERY YEAR with their Christmas specials. Standalone event released outside of the regular season to break up the wait between seasons a little.

Look at the season breakdowns on Netflix for almost any of their shows that made it to long runner status and there will inevitably be a random set of seasons that are 6 and 7 episodes, instead of the 13 they were obviously intended as.

Stranger Things season 4 comes to mind immediately. They paired some episodes up without any breaks or cliffhangers to make them movie length, and had a random mid season break so they could have two releases in the year instead of one.

, Bojack, She-Ra, Voltron all come to mind as well. I think they mostly do that to animation because it has such long lead times and to keep the younger audience remembering it exists, but...

Ah okay, so you're talking about a "split season" and not necessarily "a movie". Regardless of how Netflix airs them, they're still produced together as part of the same cycle.

That last point is especially interesting, because season 1 was ordered as 10 episodes and later reduced to 8, which HAS been a magic number for Netflix lately. However, I suspect that changes introduced by the strike might make them more tenable to doing 10 or even 12 episode seasons. (A 7-episode season now has the same staffing requirements as a 12-episode season).

Dream situation would be 10 episodes for season 2 and 12 episodes for season 3.

S3: (split anywhere after Skypiea really)
1-2. Jaya

It's going to take more than prosthetics to make Chopper.

Even with prosthetics, the actor would grow out of a chibi form unless they hired a small person, then it’s a question as to whether the voice would be done by the actor or be a different voice. A child actor would outgrow the series if it was prosthetics and voiced by an actor.

It would have to be a dwarf. I don't know if they'd allow children into heavy prosthetics.

The live action has already dispelled any notion that characters have to be the exact scale they are in the source. Someone who is 9-12 ish would suffice. They don't have to be half Sanji or Luffy's height. I think Chopper is almost 3 ft and Usopp, Sanji, etc are almost 6 ft.

I think as long as the personality is a bit more childish than the others, it will be satisfactory with the slight size gap.

They hadn't even started filming yet in February, but maybe the scripts were done? It's a long ways away, but now that its a success they might pipeline it better so there's less gap for a third season.

Kinda bummed Netflix didn’t set up something with the email, but it’s still a fun video.

Guess we can take this as Little Garden being confirmed and maintaining the dinosaur asthetic. Was worried if they did do Little Garden they might only do the giants and not the dinosaurs.

Also hoping they keep the Giant Goldfish. Know it’s a tiny detail in the grand scheme of things, but I do like the idea that Usopp’s lies ending up true is an Easter Egg that’s maintained in the Live Action.
