Just finished the chapter. it was kind of a mess, so I'll need to read it another few times. Wasn't expecting Queen's devil fruit to be that, for sure. https://www.viz.com/shonenjump/one-piece-chapter-945/chapter/18309?action=read
Chapter 945: Olin
-
-
I could re-read that last page all day long. The perpetrator to victim turn is always funny. Him talking all that shit only to be neck yanked straight into the ground. Still pretty ballsy of him to protect the whatchamacallit food with his life
-
There can only be one queen to rule the o-shiruko.
-
I wanna see Kaku vs Queen now.
-
A Giraffe is like half the size of a Brachiosaurus
-
The size doesn't matter yo.:ninja:
-
While I absolutely enjoyed BM doing yonkou-stuff, it lessens the threat of the antagonists even more.
Excluding Kaido himself, two of his three top subordinates have been ohko'ed, what we have seen from the Flying Six was not exactly promising and the rest seem to be fodder.
It makes sense in universe, sure, but I still do not understand why Oda is taking the arc in this direction, especially with so many powerhouses already lined up on the protagonists side.
-
This gave me a laugh. From the Viz weekly email:
!
If only the Lapins were here. Oh, those were simpler times…
-
I honestly thought that was the strawhats dressed up as those people. Y'know Sunkist as Sabo, Sauron as Smokah, Chopper as Lucci, Ussopp as the great Buggy and Neko Lowbun as Hancock. But when i actually looked at it i was dissapointed to find it was just the real characters, talk about a bummer
-
Great chapter. Great translation as always Stephen!
So now Drake knows for sure who Sanji is and speaks the truth out loud. Sanji detests hearing the name Vinsmoke but I think we all know he's going to use the suit again. I really really hope this leads to Sanji discarding the entire suit during some epic battle with Queen or another Calamity.
Jabra's idea of Sanji having the suit destroyed during battle but continuing on and defeating his opponent any way just sounds too great to lose out on. Tying Zeff's words into the battle about weapons being no match for ones spirit or some such is just so One Piece. God I want it!
-
How many people still believe were gonna get Sanji vs Queen and Zoro vs King?
-
Queen uses Erect!
[It's not very effective.]

On the other hand, Kaido can destroy pretty much everyone except Big Mom.
-
I still kind of want invisible sanji, too. Maybe he just keeps that part.

Jack got up from Zunishas attack and Queen is certainly getting up next chapter
If anything Kaidos side is too stacked up, especially with him around. He can literally go around and kill everyone himself. Big Mom is here to stop that from happening
-
So now we know why Jack is bullied, the sucker got a non-dinosaur df. What a loser.

Interesting that the official app presents the Stampede poster upright. I figured it would be shown horizontally, as a colour spread, like the ones for chapters 817 and 843. The difference is of course just one page in the official page count, but it'd be good know for sure. Wonder if anyone in a position to see the physical magazine would be able to confirm?
This week the action gets more chaotic as Orochi's ninja squad steps in. I enjoyed every page, but pure action doesn't leave much to comment on. We get more of Zoro begging the readers to ask questions about Kyoshiro and more build up of the idea of a Strawhat being captured and interrogated. As the two prison break scenes reach their conclusions, I would expect one or both of those plot threads to start taking the lion's share of screen time in the later chapters of volume 94.
There are fights I don't mine cutting away from and only seeing the key moments of, but this new confrontation between Hawkins and Law isn't one of them. Both characters' sets of powers lend themselves to creative action, and I can't wait to see what solution Law finds for the hostage situation. Hawkins is also proving to work a lot better as a villain that I might have expected prior to Wano.
Oh, and my boy Bepo had better be alright! I always enjoyed him as a character, but I've been reading His Dark Materials over the last couple weeks and polar bears have climbed a few rungs in my heart as a result.
The Sanji/Zoro moment was great. Exactly what I wanted from them being back together. A thought that occurs for a final thing between them this arc is that each could topple a dinosaur devil fruit user and then compete over whose is bigger, just like their Little Garden dinosaur hunt. I think it might even have been an allosaurus that Sanji beat back then as well. Foreshadowing for years! Where's the triceratops fruit?
Looks like the Ashura plot thread has been more or less wrapped up, with only the important plot infodump to go. This has been a bit of an odd subplot. It's so in the background that I'm surprised every time it shows up. It could be good anime filler fodder I suppose. They could make more clear who set fire to the mountain, since different translations seems to have different ideas about that.
And then we have Linlin. That first spread is fantastic - it does a great job of making her look huge and threatening despite how inherently ridiculous she is. That's always been one of One Piece's strengths, but it's still worth commenting on. Queen transforms and looks pretty good. He's got that same sense of size and same level of silliness in his design, but despite being an actual dinosaur, he doesn't manage to look quite as threatening as Big Mom did three pages earlier.
I really have no idea at this point how this set piece is going to play out. Luffy trapped in the arena, Kid and Killer in the water, Queen and Big Mom clashing in the middle. Kawamatsu. Caribou and Raizo somewhere. I have no idea how all that comes together and I love it.
This is another great chapter that keeps a strong bit of momentum and two exciting action sequences going. Gonna be a long two weeks waiting for the next installment.
-
I actually really like the raid suit
I feel like I'm in a very small minority
-
I don't find it confusing. Holdem set the fire and Kinemon feels responsible. I'm also surprised that people aren't excited for what Ashura has to show Kinemon. It can be linked to why Ashura isn't so eager to join Kinemon outside of the "Blank". It can also possibly be something to help out.

The somber tone makes it feel like it'll indeed something related to Ashura's current apathy. Though I don't know about those theories about it being Denjiro's grave…

Boy, what are the odds five different people who all ate different models of the Dragon-Dragon Fruit all are in the same crew?

Lol you could say the same thing about Big Mom's crew having lots of food based devil fruits
-
Pretty good odds considering Kaido's underworld connections.

We pretty much established Kaido like zoans so I don't think it's that crazy. He hires strong zoans and a lot of strong zoans are dinos.

How many people still believe were gonna get Sanji vs Queen and Zoro vs King?
raises hand
I expect Queen to be fully healed and ready to go by the fire festival. He'll be ready to go and no Samurai or non-Straw Hat from the alliance will be able to best him, King or Jack. Though with Kyoshiro and Ashura we are given the impression that they have the potential to put down Kaidou's top men but I don't see it happening in the slightest.
Oda has shown us two Calamities in situations where they looked less than what one might expect from an Emperors commanders. Still how do you account for another Emperor and an island sized animal taking a swipe at you? Forces of nature should still be a threat to mortal beings lol. I think when things really go down by the end of the arc Jack, King and Queen will completely show their dominance against their many opponents.
Doflamingo was given treatment like no other character in One Piece for the longest time. He was super confident and seemed almost untouchable for hundreds and hundreds of chapters. Law got that tiny little cut in but it wasn't until Luffy nailed the Red Hawk that Doffy took any kind of significant attack from anyone. So far we've seen multiple Emperors and their highest ranking officers on multiple occasions look a little off in their game. I don't mind it one bit because they aren't infallible gods and still have their own ship to deal with. The Animal Pirates have shown that they can be bested but just watch when Oda wants to really show us why they've been one of the dominating forces in the world for so long. That ALL IS LOST moment will be here sooner or later and the alliance is going to get hit hard.
At the moment we are given some interesting exchanges or dialogue that could lead one to believe that Kyoshiro is Zoro's final opponent this arc and Drake is Sanji's. I think it's just a fake out or at the very least some sort of mid arc opponent before the both of those enemies end up defeated and on the side of the good guys. They may very well be Zoro and Sanji's stepping stones to an Emperor Commander.
I imagine Zoro and Sanji will get help but will ultimately be the deciding factor in the defeat of 2 of the calamities. Jimbei too, thats my boy! He'll probably have some beef with Jack and some history about betraying his race or some nonesense that makes it personal for the both of them.

I hope your right, I really want to see them fight the calamities, I mean I think Sanji vs Drake sounds interesting but I'd much rather have him fight queen, and I'm not pumped at all for Zoro vs kyoshiro as zoro's main arc battle if that is the way Oda is heading
-
The somber tone makes it feel like it'll indeed something related to Ashura's current apathy. Though I don't know about those theories about it being Denjiro's grave…
The first thing that I thought of was Toki or Oden's body, but Denjiro is possible as well
-
Actual chapter was much better than the impression spoilers left me with. The Ninja villains might be a neat band of people with weird powers, not sure what to expect from them anymore. Do they get completely defeated by arc's end and removed, swap sides at some point, or just be allowed to recover and remain around under Momo's new leadership?
Love Hawkins way of using his fruit to take hostages. I do have to wonder though, did Hawkins know that cut would go to the guy in the cage? If it's random, it kinda would've messed up the message if the cut went to Bepo somewhere else. If it's not and Hawkins picks and chooses, it calls into question why he'd only have 3 dolls right now, although he could just be lying. Either way, I don't see many options for Law here. Either Law does some body swaps to take Hawkins' body for himself/his allies and figures out how to cancel the power himself, or Law surrenders here. Either way, I think this leads to Hawkins getting Law informed on whatever scheming the other supernovas here are doing.
I have to assume Drake is still using full-dinosaur mode just because it's bigger and less suspicious when he causes collateral damage to the surrounding area with it. Surely if Drake was serious, he'd be fighting in hybrid form, right?
Queen's Brachio-fruit reveal is cool and neat, can't wait/really hope to see more of it later on. Big Mom finally breaking in was definitely not as bad as I worried it would be. I expected Oda to go full-page spread devoted to just the Eneru-faces, and all Big Mom did was shove Little Foot's head into the ground. Now I'm just worried he'll get smacked down worse next chapter, but eh, I have interest now for how this is gonna play out.
My only complaint is just a continued worry that, seeing Big Mom like this, Oda's gonna go ahead with the ally theory and we're never gonna get the beat down that LinLin so thoroughly deserves to get. Not getting that would be a big souring point for me.
-
Honestly, I gave up on Zoro and Sanji ever getting big 1vs1 fights post timeskip until maybe the final arc and calling them "big" will probably be an overstatement if it's just a ~40-page fight against Blackbeard's crew.
As much as I would like to see Zoro and Sanji defeat the top 2 calamities on their own, it's never going to happen.
The focus on all those alliances and Luffy being way overdeveloped combat-wise compared to his crew makes me regret pre-TS dynamic with the Straw Hat crew living their adventures mostly on their own.
-
Big Mom is fun. I hope she gives Queen a proper slap like she did to that bear when she was a kid.
Hawkins is using his fruit smartly. He should do the same to strawhat to be fully immune to the alliance.
That Kidd and Killer drowning seems unnecessary.
-
I wonder who Daifuku is going to fight.
Maybe Page 1? Some of not yet shown Flying Six should be fighting with Big Mom children when they reach Wano..
-

Yes! In earlier arcs they were the ones moving the plot. Nowadays they're often just going with the greater flow, partaking in events instead of driving them. Well we are where we are now because they decided to get involved in someone elses plan.

If it were that easy, Oda wouldn't have bothered with the minor Chekhov's Gun of having Luffy and Hyogoro be the ones who finished off all the O-shiruko in the first place. Just leave things as they are with Queen being the primary offender for consuming it all. Makes it easier for Luffy and BM having a common enemy at this point.
-
These beast pirates are really ruthless, doesn't matter if its sengoku + fujitora or a goddamn emperor, they will charge at you without a second thought.
They truly resemble their captain lol
-
@Kaido:
Pretty good odds considering Kaido's underworld connections.
What does pretty good even mean here, lol.
It's not like it's a stock market. We have exotic fruits that can randomly pop up anywhere at any time, some of which might be eaten by someone already. it would also require each of users to pass out on any sweet devil fruit they might have got a hold of before dino-fruits just so they'd have thematically consistent devil fruit abilities.
It's just a lazy convenience, same as with Big Mom.
-

Kaido actively wants Zoans in his crew. I don't think it's crazy he has so many.
-
Alternatively, Kaidou may have specifically sought out people with Dino-model Devil Fruits to recruit. Or just the fruits themselves as part of his efforts to build a Zoan army.
If Doflamingo could track down the Mera Mera no Mi, it doesn't sound to far-fetched that he (or others under Kaidou's banner) could have been funneling any exotic Zoans they come across to back to Kaidou as well.
-

Don't think it's crazy either. Just unconvincing.

Well Dofla getting a hand on Mera Mera is also pure convenience, lol.
I don't really think Oda gave it too much thought. He wanted crews with themed devil fruits, something something underworld market, voila.
-

To be fair Big Mom and Kaido seems to use their obscene power to force the world to please their most ridiculous desires rather than be smart or reasonable.
-
Should I:
A) use a good chunk of my resources to amass rare zoan devil fruits and create fake ones or
B) use it to get some OP devil fruits with way more destructive potential? Then again we are Animal Kingdom Pirates. Our contract states "no paramecia" and "no logia"… :(((
-
Kaido is crazytown bananapants, nothing he does or his reasoning for why should hold up to scrutiny. But if i knew that a crazed man of his reputation, who'd gladly trade ya for it, really wants animal and dino fruits i'd be first in line to make a fortune
-
Yeah that is just something were you are supposed to suspend your disbelief.
That a whole crew is centered around a common theme is for the story sake, even if it would be hard to justify to occur naturally.
Kaidos top crew around dinos/ancient animals, BigMom around food, Shanks seem to prefer non-DF members, the former admirals all being logias.
I dont think that is something were you are supposed to ponder about it for too long.

Doflamingo said in Law's flashback that the underground trade he did involved Devil Fruit trading, and he was able to locate the Ope Ope no Mi that way. It admittedly was convenient for him that the Ope Ope ended up being in the North Blue that time, but when you have a reach as wide as Kaido's, convenience doesn't seem like a factor.

It's like being a millionaire/billionaire. If you have the ressources to do what you want without detriment you do it. Big Mom food theme is much weirder since she doesn't care about it.
Luffy has a weirdly selective process. Kaido does the same. If anything I don't get why he lets a bunch of supernovas without zoans suddenly join him.
-
Reminder that REAL Devil Fruits are quite rare, specially Ancient/Mythical Zoans and each of them are one-of-a-kind.
-
So are famous pieces of art and rare books, but that doesn't stop ludicrously wealthy and influential collectors from going out of their way to find and hoard them.
-
Well Kaido isn't Blackbeard and the competition for rare fruits is fierce. The Op Op fruit had a price tag of 5,000,000,000, (Luffy's current bounty is 1,500,000,000) with the WG actively going after it as well.
Apart from that, going for a full Ancient Zoan / Zoan / Smile army can have a concrete tactical advantage during a war. Kaido's army is super durable and regenerates fast, which is amazing for siege-type encounters. I mean Jack fought the Monster Minks for days AND nights, and I think it's safe to say that the other top guys of the Beast Pirates could do that as well.
Lousy paramecia would only be the weakest link in an otherwise reliable army, with zoan users roatating in and out of the fight if needed.Though all that said, I'm also betting everything on Kaido simply being a zoan nerd.

It makes sense. Big Mom's thing is family, Kaido's is…pets, I guess you could call them. Shanks' is true friends (like Luffy's) and Blackbeard's is kind of just like-minded individuals.
I'm a little disappointed that Queen's DF is a Brachiosaur, but I guess it makes sense for the triumvirate of Headliners. You've got an ancient mammal, Jack. You've got one of the, I think they call them some science word that I saw in a video yesterday, but it's what differentiated the bird-like dinos such as the T-Red/Raptor and Pteranodon (King) from the more Triceratops-y, Stegosaurus-y, Ankylosaurus-y ones. So even though the two dino ones are still dinos, there's a lot of difference between them and not just superficially.
I wonder if it's a good thing that Momo is currently hiding in his Zoan form; would anyone recognize him after 20 years?
I'm glad O-Lin came to the rescue because without that kind of distraction I have no idea how Luffy would manage to rescue Kidd and Killer. If Killer couldn't stop laughing, though, does that mean he's been aspirating water this entire time?
Also, Hawkins says Law can't beat him but what if Law only hurt Hawkins a little bit, causing his voodoo dolls to be expended for only minor injuries and thus making it unnecessary to deal mortal blows?
-
Now I'm imagining Kid!Kaidou nerding out over a ZooBooks magazine…
A clearly bored Linlin dutifully standing over his shoulder pretending to listen as he gushes over the newest cool animal he's come across...
-
We are talking about the top pirates of the world. And not goody goody pirates, they are piratey pirates. Do you really think if Kaido found out a fruit he wanted was already eaten by a random person, he would just say "oh well, it is what it is" and go away? He would just kill the person and harvest the fruit (we saw with Caesar there are cheats to respawn a fruit next to you).
To be honest, I think phoenix_fire is right and this is a matter one is supposed to simply think it is a theme an leave at it (I don't think it is as bad as every character in some manga being baptized with names that somehow will perfectly reflect their future lives, but we never bat an eye at it), but if we really need an in-universe reason I don't think it is really hard to believe both Linlin and Kaido would use force on top of their connections to get a fruit they wanted.
