So, we know that obviously, they didn't have the votes to repeal Obamacare because the replacement was a dumpster fire.
But do we know how many votes they would have had?

Since the Democrats absolutely refused to cross lines on this (Pelosi deserves a lot of credit for that by the way; there wasn't the remotest sign that the Democrats would throw them any lifeline), the GOP could afford to lose twenty-one votes and there were twenty-seven confirmed 'no' votes with four or five more probable 'no'.
It probably would have went worse than that if they'd held the vote since some people likely would have broken against it when it was obviously going to fail.
-
I know there were quite a few "undecided" votes.

Hard to believe this makes one nostalgic for Bush.
I feel like there's a lot more hope for the future now than there was under Bush.
Things are potentially worse (yes, I know things actually are worse for many American citizens and immigrants, but at least we're not engaged in two wars at once), but it's looking more and more like Trump will selfdestruct and be impeached by his own party before he gets the chance to start his own war.
-
-
Surely not W. ?
Yes, W.
Trump is a dumpster fire, that makes the awfulness of W.'s era just a dumpster in comparison. W. at least understood politics and wasn't trying to break the world. Starting a war on false pretenses and screwing up a lot of things, sure… but Trump is so, so much worse.
And he's only been at it for 2 months. We're screwed if anyone legitimately attacks us right now.
(And of course, there was an entire generation of voters that were at not at all politically aware ages during his term and basically spent their entire lives under Obama, and so have no real concept of what the Republican party can be when its in charge.)
-
His staff is trying to downplay it, but Trump just gave a huge middle finger to the GOP.
Is he going to go to war with the GOP already?

"This is not on President Trump," she said. "No one expected a businessman to completely understand the nuances, the complicated ins and outs of Washington and its legislative process."
Actually, yes. People do expect the President of the United States to understand the legislative process. Wtf?

A bit late to this, but I had heard that they were missing up to 40 votes as they tried to stretch between moderates and the Freedom Caucus and pissed off both in the process. If a vote was called, I doubt there would be, at best, more than 190 yes votes (out of a necessary 218).

Adding to the mess is Jeff Sessions, demanding that sanctuary cities comply with the law or lose funding. There's so many problems with this. One, I think the 10th amendment makes this all moot, as Trump can't do what Jeff is saying. Two, holy hell this guy doesn't hold back on the fear mongering. I think he mentioned rape and murder at least a dozen times each. Lastly, I wish one of the reporters asked this man, who is demanding someone else obey the law, about his perjury charge.
Really, I get the impression that Jeff is whipped, and much like his Press Secretary Melissa just following orders. He looks so nervous, and for a man with a reputation for being smart in terms of law I can't imagine he doesn't know better. I feel he knows his time is coming.

I don't know being less bad than Trump is still bad and those 8 years of Bush were a standard in shitshow Presidential Administrations at least in our generation.
Where was this abiding by federal law when the Supreme Court put their foot down on the ACA and Abortions?

News has been trickling in that various red states that refused the Medicaid expansion earlier, are now looking into it after the massive self-defeat the Republicans had with Obamacare.
So, literally, they not only failed to kill it but have ended up making it stronger and more widespread.
The magnitude of their failure is comedy incarnate.

So if I have this straight, Trump is less popular than ever, ICE is a bunch of thugs, Sessions in an impotent fascist, and the Republican's saved Obamacare.
Hey, if that guy who got shot lives, then this is a pretty good weekend! It's a shame that Trump is going to take away our clean power tomorrow. I guess you can't have everything.

Russian mobs are surrounding a sewer gutter, dragging out a struggling man from within Russian Rebels: We have him!!! We have the tyrant!!!

I struggle to take this man seriously. I mean, he might have a good point here and there, but he's just constantly using hyperbole without the least bit of nuance. He's lecturing his audience, but he's mixing in facts with opinions and unless you're already well aware of all the facets of the news he's reporting on, it's very different to tell the two apart! Not to mention he always portrays 'what's going to happen' in the most extreme, worst case scenario way. It's so sensationalist, you end up thinking he's just full of shit!
When he says 'lost all powers of the presidency', what does he mean? A casual observer, not clued in to the way the president's constitutional powers work, might well think he's talking legally, as if it were a vote of no-confidence and Trump's actually lost real power. In actuality, Lawrence is merely giving his own sensationalist opinion on the political fallout from the healthcare bill's failure and presenting it as undeniable fact.
'Nothing will get through congress because Donald Trump wants it'… well I mean, no, there are situations where Trump could potentially get things through, should opinion polls improve and Trump get a few political 'wins' under his belt going forward.
'Donald Trump is the weakest president we've EVER seen because he's a weak person'... mah isn't this just ad hominem? Like, he called him lazy and stupid... does that really add anything to the conversation, aside from giving democrats some confirmation bias?
I can't get through the whole thing, it's just way too much visceral anger against Trump, with little real, well weighed out political insight. Too many 'always' and 'ever' and 'all' for his opinions to be seen as credible...
Right, rant over. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong and that Mr. Lawrence is absolutely correct in what he says.
EDIT: rereading this it sounds like I'm trying to defend Trump from Lawrence's attacks. I'm not, Trump failed, and failed hard. My rant is more about inaccuracies in Lawrence's political commentary due to his hyperbolic and unnuanced way of portraying the news and its potential repercussions.
-
Unfortunately Trump is a weak individual and as shown lazy and stupid.
Maybe if he'd stop taking such immense exception to criticism, propagating bad news or false statistics without taking the time to verify them, And didn't have recurring issues employing proper grammar in his tweets.
He probably wouldn't be called out for being what he is.

Being raised in an enviroment where his dad's money means he's constantly getting his ass kissed does not make for a man who takes criticism well.

Eh, he's going to get beaten into the ground no matter what he does; that's how the presidency is.
It's just much worse for him because:
A.) He can't take criticism at all.
B.) His immediate, emotionally charged responses do nothing but tell his critics that they have power over him.
C.) He's completely unqualified to actually do the job, so he'll inevitably get far more legitimate criticism than an experienced lawmaker would have.
D.) A and C combined make him much more resistant to constructive criticism and suggestions made by his own people. The solution is for him to abandon twitter and stop watching/reading the news, so he can hopefully calm down and start working with his staff.

That doesn't sound suspicious at all.
EDIT: The White House's statement contradicts with the one from the Dept. of Justice.

[“All Americans, regardless of their political views, can recognize that government stagnation has hindered our ability to properly function, often creating widespread congestion and leading to cost overruns and delays,” Trump said in a statement to The Washington Post. “I promised the American people I would produce results, and apply my ‘ahead of schedule, under budget’ mentality to the government.”
“We should have excellence in government,” Kushner said Sunday in an interview in his West Wing office. “The government should be run like a great American company. Could that actually help our veteran healthcare problems?
Also, don't we have laws against nepotism in political appointments?

Run government like a business, and fire the Great Plains states for not being profitable.

I gotta say, and this is based on today's news I'm starting to get over what I assume was "Trump hysteria." Everything is still bad, but the fact that this administration is so impotent really helps.
Like with Trump slashing Obama's energy laws. It sounds bad, but then I read up that coal is a dying industry anyway. Hey, maybe this law really was unneeded, and it won't make a difference. At least, in the sense that I don't think any many companies will start using more coal now.
The trend of Trump's team being a bunch of climate deniers is still worrying though. The world seems to be shifting towards renewable energy despite them though, which is good to see. It feels like they're failing to change the tide.
-
Could that actually help our veteran healthcare problems?
Difficult to say one way or the other honestly, the plan for that appears to be in the early stages. Details about it are slim right now. Here's a rough idea of what they have in mind though.
Areas they hope to tackle include overhauling Veterans’ Affairs, improving workforce development and targeting opioid addiction.
"As some of its first priorities, the office will focus on modernizing the technology of every federal department, identifying transformational infrastructure projects and re-imagining the VA system so they can better serve our nation's heroes," press secretary Sean Spicer said.
He said the VA appears to be doing certain things well, such as bulk purchases of prescription drugs, but there are other areas, including record-keeping and the purchasing of technology that need improvement. Source.

Seems Sean Spicer's getting ready to snap.
Excerpt:
White House press secretary Sean Spicer finally seemed to reach a breaking point Tuesday when it comes to questions about President Trump and Russia.
Spicer got testy in an exchange with American Urban Radio Networks reporter April Ryan after Ryan announced a premise that Spicer disagreed with: that the White House has a Russia issue to deal with. By the end, Spicer accused Ryan of pushing her own agenda and even instructed her not to shake her head at him.
“No, we don't have that,” Spicer said when Ryan cited the White House's Russia issue. When Ryan continued with her question, he cut in again: “No, no. I get it. But I've said it from the day that I got here until whenever that there's not a connection. You've got Russia.”
Spicer then offered this zinger: “If the president puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight, somehow that's a Russian connection.”
When Ryan tried again to ask her question, Spicer said, “I appreciate your agenda here. … At some point, report the facts.”
Spicer pointed to those who have said there is no proof of collusion between Russia and the Trump team — which is true but is only a part of the inquiries and is still being investigated by the FBI. He added, “I'm sorry that that disgusts you. You're shaking your head.”
Spicer then told Ryan that she was “going to have to take no for an answer” when it came to the idea of collusion with Russia.

Lobbyists didn’t have to work that hard to convince Republicans to side with major companies on this one but they probably were what got the vote over the edge. What an unsurprising and disappointing conclusion.
