You could interpret that way, but the way Luffy says "If I can just recover my haki…" (MS translation, don't know how accurate it is), it most definitively implies on a limit for Haki usage.
No I agree there's definitely the implied limit but I just wonder if it's because of gear fourth's apparent need to have haki implemented into its form that has lead to the supposed overuse of his haki, like for gear fourth to activate haki is an essential part of the boundman form, without the armament haki there is no gear fourth, so is it his form and its apparent need for armament haki to work that's caused the exhaustion of his haki or can he use gear fourth without haki?

I wrote that comment in jest, unless you took it seriously? I've been reading One Piece since I was 10 years old, I'm 23 now.
By the time these threads reach their 20th page, it's neigh impossible to tell what's in jest. I assumed you were serious as I had no idea what you were responding to, and I was curious if you were new to the weekly grind, as you only recently joined.
I don't even think it's that the haki has a limitation, it's the fact that he over-exerted himself into working it into his gear fourth AND having the haki meld into his rubber body, instead of making it rigid and allowing it to instead retain it's rubber properties that has lead him to the point of exhaustion. I think standard armament haki is just a coating but when used in the extreme it leads to fatigue. It's just how I interpreted the whole thing, I could be wrong of course.
I get similar vibes. I think haki limits are essentially mental stamina, considering it is based in will power, and, using it normally, Luffy is likely to never run out during a fight, but Gear 4 shapes and controls haki in such an extreme way that he runs through his reservoir too quickly. If only there was some mental form of meat, he'd be able to recover neigh instantaneously.

Yeah, besides a bunch of people who know they'll get slaughtered banding together to fight Doflamingo in order to buy Luffy some time. But yeah, big emotional moments and great development for minor characters is equivalent to nothing happening, amirite?

If there was no drawkback, everyone would be wondering why he didn't use it during Fishman Island or Punk Hazard, or earlier in this arc; "why even bother with gears 2 or 3?" everyone would be asking. If it's not one thing, it's another. I for one, love the fact that Luffy is out of commission after using this; it makes it a true trump card. It also means that he still has to get better, and he has a long way to go. That works for me.

We see the story from Luffy's perspective. Maybe the enemies have some similar situations but we aren't in their head to witness them?

Isn't that part of the appeal of Luffy though? He has to work that much harder than other people with "superior" fruits and other advantages. Despite the creative things others do with their fruits, Luffy still pushes himself physically more than they do… he alters his bloodflow, bones, muscles, etc.
Even though nothing much happened in this chapter I enjoyed it quite a bit. It really seems like we're (finally) coming down to the wire on Dressrosa and I can't wait to move on. I'm getting tired of seeing half of Doffy's smirking face in every other panel.
I like that the drawback to Gear 4 is basically an intense stamina drain. It makes it a trump card and a finisher in tight situations, rather than a go to for every fight. Luffy seemed pretty adamant that he can take Doffy out with one more attack, so I'm hoping he has an awesome move up his sleeve. I don't quite understand what happened when he dropped out of 4th Gear though? Did Doffy counterattack in some way, or did Luffy just run out of time and fall? Because in the panel it looks like he's going in for the killing blow and just explodes.
Burgess jumping in to take advantage like a scumbag is great, but Sabo doing the last minute save is cheese as hell. I don't mind it too much, but I would have preferred for him to step in before the cliched last second. I also kinda hope Sabo goes away for a super long period of time after this, because I'm not the biggest fan. I dislike him for a lot of the same reasons I dislike (pre-Doffy smackdown) Law. He feels so pandering and generically "cool" that it bothers me to no end. The fact that he's now just a replacement for Ace doesn't help.
Anyways, enjoyed the chapter and I'm both looking forward to and dreading the 10 minute delay we have coming up. Looking forward to the potential of Zoro, Franky and the samurai doing something to stall and/or stop the birdcage and dreading how much longer Oda can drag out those 10 minutes.

I don't understand why everyone assumes that Luffy just got on the island and then immediately developed Gear 4th. Its not like he took the entire 2 years perfecting it. Maybe he developed it after the first year or maybe the first 6 months. Maybe he had to develop it in the last 6 months. He didn't just instantaneously get it when he started training. Sure he had time to work on it but how long did Luffy have 2nd and 3rd gear before he got rid of the side effects/perfected it?
Also i would lean towards the latter since he has not been shown using gear fourth without haki yet. So in order to use haki in gear fourth he would have to learn how to use it and since he didn't know the basics until Rayleigh left then he probs didn't get the hang of it until the end of the training period.

This is a good point. Rayleigh said he'd only teach him the basics of haki, and that took 1.5 years. It wouldn't be until after that until he started shaping it into what would eventually become gear 4, and even then, it probably took him a while to reach the oddity that is Bounceman. I would love to see all the failed iterations of it at some point (i.e. all of Oda's drafts before he found what worked for him!)

I don't know the exact amount, but pre-timeskip in total was about 3 months in One Piece. If not 3 months, somewhere around that ballpark. The point is, Luffy trained for longer than the time from East Blue until his training started. If I am completely wrong I apologize, since people from this forum told me this.

I can now say that Luffy will reck weaker yanko commanders but there is no way he can beat the top tier and this has been proven with this fight. What i can say now is that after Luffy win against Doffy he will basically level up to a top commander but still a far way from a yanko, therefore the first time a yamko is defeated it will be the combination of multiple supernova and strong characters. I think after this arc Luffy will be able to measure up to Doffy level of strength and will be able to take on Yanko top commanders it may very well be that the next arc villain Luffy fight will be somebody at that level.

Do people not understand it's ok to like or dislike things based on opinion, and that their opinion is no more valid than anyone else's? I enjoyed and don't need to justify it. If you didn't like it that's fine too. Why are people fighting about who's opinion is more valid? Express yourself without insulting others opinions.
So in other words Sabo is awesome and I think next chapter will be his time to shine and will be titled "It won't happen again" flashback (while fighting Burgess/Doflamingo) to why Sabo didn't go save Ace and Sabo pulling some crazy powerful stunts.

Well there are also some similarities between Wizard of Oz story and Kidd alliance hinting at their target being Big Mom.
If we will hear name "Emerald City" again it will be certain that Oda gotten inspired by Wizard of Oz story here and there while planning Big Mom vs Kidd part of story.

Discussion gotten bit nasty as some people couldnt accept possibility of Oda getting some basic ideas on Supernovas and Big Mom from Wizard of Oz but still there are some arguments that would go along nicely with what you expect from Kidd alliance to be doing next.
This is a typical shounen escapade.
That could also apply to One Piece quite heavily. It is trying to be the essential classic shounen of the new era. So a typical shounen escapade within a paragon of typical shounen is quite expected.
I think it does take a specialty when you consider the pure style and impact and effort put into these pages to convey it. That's the specialty. How well this is all presented.

One little thing I notice in this chapter is, despite all the focus on Donflamingo being alive, is that he does very little here. He laughes, walks a few feet, and gets blocked off by the gladiators. The chapter ends before the gladiator fight could even begin. I'm just left curious to Donflamingo's state right now. Is he just going to ace through these fighters like nothing, or has he been injured in some special way? I'm assuming the former will happen, but it just seems too interesting if Donflamingo's gained some kind of handicap out of that beating. I'd like to see how the guy will use his abilities if say, one of his legs stops working. Could the string fruit hold him up? How healthy does he need to be to use his powers? I wonder.
Is there any possibility that Dofla is currently not "himself"? If a powerup like G4 costs Luffy his haki temporarily, would awakening cost Dofla something like losing consciousness, like he's being in a "possessed" state?

Because he doesn't use them when not necessary. You just need to look at his fight with Hordy where he gradually level up to take care of him. Hordy didn't need more than gear second and the boat only required power(plus the bouncing problem). Same way Ceasar was never a problem of power. If we are to question Luffy not using his gear right away then the drawback doesn't make the problem magically disappear.

The beauty of random exposition is it works on everyone. Law and his stamina is an example. There's no reason to assume they do since that was never comment on or nor does their ability rely on the weird stuff Luffy pull for his gears.

Gear 4th ran out, so air came out of Luffy's mouth and he couldn't fly anymore. That cause him to crash into the mountain. Doffly only moves after that.

Because Luffy explains how that was his solution to fight the beasts on the island and even without that six month is a crazy lengthy time considering Luffy's growth rate in grandline. If a gear 4th had to be invented during the timeskip, I expected better than a form that quickly makes him powerless when used. That is suppose to be the mode he used to tame an island.

I would think that Luffy actually destroyed the first aid on Doflas internal organs and Dofla had to retouch on it. He would still be in pain from the Gamma knife.

But I'm sure Luffy didn't use G4 on FI because of the air limitation he had there. Doesn't really help if he inflates himself and succumbs because the lack of air shortly after.
Going into this arc I was kinda expecting Doffy to use something like Neferpitou's Terpsichora from HxH. Controlling himself with parasite to augment his physical ability in his current state wouldn't be too farfetched, I don't think.
But then, I guess it would be easier to just control the gladiators themselves and have them fight eachother.

Wouldn't really count since Zoro would be going up against a half-dead Doflamingo while Sanji fought a fresh nearly 100% strength Doflamingo.

Because Luffy explains how that was his solution to fight the beasts on the island and even without that six month is a crazy lengthy time considering Luffy's growth rate in grandline. If a gear 4th had to be invented during the timeskip, I expected better than a form that quickly makes him powerless when used. That is suppose to be the mode he used to tame an island.
Yeah but how does that affect the story? The power up is so good and so over whelming the story basically demands it has some draw backs. Gear 2 and 3 needed those draw backs when they were what turned the tides in the biggest battles we had seen thus far. For a power up so good there needs to be some reason why it isn't in Luffy's standard arsenal and just like Gears 2 and 3 there just might be a day when Gear 4 doesn't exhaust him for 10 minutes at a time. It can be cut down to 5, 2 or no minutes at all. Basically we can still watch Luffy grow while the series finishes up its last 10 years or so. Who am I kidding? 15 years.
Why would there be different rules for Smiley? Anyway, it's just his name. The axolotl devil fruit is geniune. Devil fruits have swirls and SMILEs have circles.
Don't remember seeing the 2 year rule anywhere. The closest thing I can think of is Luffy's Gomu Gomu growing every 50 years, but that was in Romance Dawn, so not canon.
Considering what we saw with Smiley's axolotl in previous arc and considering Burgess just tried to kill Luffy to get his ability while carrying a mysterious bag on his back, I think it's safe to assume "carry corresponding fruit" method actually works.
As for why don't more people know about it/use it… Who knows? It's not something you can notice that easilly. Doubt many devil fruit users die in crowded orchards or fruit markets. And even if someone saw a fruit becoming a devil fruit after user's death, he'd still have to know a lot about devil fruits (i.e. memorized the df picture book) to be able to connect the dots. Maybe there are even more conditions. Maybe the fruit has to match the size perfectly or has to be ripe. Maybe that's why there was a bag of apples on that sled in PH instead of one apple. Maybe CC didn't want to risk it.
Damn, so maybe I really came up with that on my own. I was sure it was 2 years. And it only made more sense with how mera-mera no mi turned up after 2 years of timeskip. Like that time had to pass…

Nahh he will talk shit of trash. Luffy has proven himself.
Luffy has shown he can have good power. But in the end couldn't finish Dofla.
I want to see Doflamingo trying to immoblizie Luffy in their last clash - with same move that was used on Jozu and Sanji.
Then Luffy setting himself free with CoC blast - would explain why Doffy didnt even tried to immobilize Luffy with his possibly strongest basic technique.
I really want to see it as then there would be no plotholes considering how fight between those two went on.
Decent chapter, looking forward to seeing how they hold Doflo off.
As I think about the fight more and more, I feel it works well overall with what will need to happen as time goes on.
First part is that Luffy still has a long ways to go, and we have a tangible aspect to see where he can grow. Some argue that in that short amount of time he should've gotten the side affects away, but that seems to be a bad view to take. Who knows how long it took to take away the downsides of Gear 2 and 3, which at the time were already bad enough. This is the worst one, where he can't make any movements for 10 whole minutes. Who knows how bad it was before this, and how long it took to achieve this form. The other problem is it's not just using his devil fruit to increase is ability, but also using haki/will power. I've seen comments about how Luffy should be easily able to continue because of the will we've seen from him. If we go by what we saw from Marine Ford, he eventually lost all his will. In this case, he was pushing himself to the limit for a long period of time, which even the most willed person will collapse at some point.
Another aspect is that Luffy will need to accept help from others if he wishes to achieve his dream. Just from this fight alone, we've gotten a clear idea that Luffy would've been fighting an uphill battle if it wasn't for Law. Even then Doflamingo has taken these hits and has still kept getting back up. Luffy is going to face monsters even stronger than Doflamingo in the future. In order to become better, he will need to keep pushing past his limits, but the only possible way to do that is have back-up to allow him to recover after a bit. Much of this arc's success has depended on others helping, whether it's the dwarves allowing access to the factory, or Sabo being there to get Luffy out of a bind. From this arc, we and Luffy can see that his success will depend on having others there for him, as the world is too big for just him and his crew to take on.
People keep saying Doflamingo is hax, and in some cases that may be. However, this is also to show just what's around the corner when it comes to the Yonko fights. If Doflamingo is afraid of Kaido, just what kind of beast is he? With the fight being what it is, we can get an idea of just how far Luffy still has to go if he wants to take on the strongest by himself. Most likely he will be fighting with others against the likes of Big Mom and Kaido.
Maybe when certain events happen later in the series, some of the aspects people don't like now will become a positive. It can be easy to judge certain aspects when we don't have the full picture, and fear that something you don't like can lead to worst case scenario. That's not to say it doesn't happen, but sometimes it's best to wait and see, then make a full judgment.
