Don't you mean Pala?
It's Picas (though apparently in some places I've never been in it's called espadas)
@Monkey:
Don't you mean Pala?
Apologies for being lazy, but I thought Spada was Spanish for sword, and was the Spanish name for the suit that's spade in English.
I don't actually know Spanish like … at all. Google translate tells me Pala means spade. Is that actually what the suit is called in Spanish?
It's Picas (though apparently in some places I've never been in it's called espadas)
The Spade suit is called a Sword/Pike suit in Spain?
Looking it up though Oda isn't going off your names for the suits, he's taking the English names and translating into Spanish.
Otherwise Trebol would be Bastos, and I don't even know about the other two. You guys apparently have Gold and Cup suits. So it would be Oros and Copas.
So far it's been the English ones, Heart, Club, Diamond, and Spades.

This is why I should be less lazy and read teh thread haha. I was under the impression that the English suit "Spade" came from Spanish for sword, so that's why I've been calling him Spada. Though apaprently I was conned into cutting off the 'e' . . .

Trebol means clover, not club though?
Trebol means clover, not club though?
The Club suit is also called Clover sometimes. Apparently the playing cards using in English speaking countries are from France, and the original name for our Clubs was indeed Clovers. "Trefles".
So yeah, unquestionably Oda is taking the English/French deck that is most famous around the world and translating the names to Spanish.
Rather than using the Spanish style deck.
So Pala is still the most likely name of the mystery guy.
so did anybody notice the back of this boy… who oddly looks' like natsu's shirt? it says Mou-Shima - SEN.... Mashima Sensei? it's clear. Oda is taking subtle jabs at Mashima XD
actually Mou Shimasen Kara is a popular gag documentary manga in Kodansha publication by a veteran mangaka Hideo Nishimoto, maybe it is a sort of homage like Mikio Itoo Wanted poster and Hokuto no Ken Sanji knife in earlier volumes. I remember Mashima himself did a parody titled Mashimaen Kara in RAVE, but of course it had nothing to do with Oda and Mashima.

I have never heard anyone call the clubs suit clover except those whose first language/first language of people who taught them card games was not English. I don't really know what Spades is called in most of the world, but it could well be something like pike or sword in otehr regions too. Seems most likely to me Oda is taking whatever the Japanese call them and translating into Spanish.

The spanish deck consists of espadas, bastos, oros and copas.
But the names we use for the english one (the ones you play poekr with) are corazon(hearts), trebol(club), diamante(diamond) and picas(spades)

Slow? how is this slow? he did the whole flashback, a few scenes with Luffy and started the last block in just one chapter I don't see how thats slow.

Anyway good chapter, I'm liking Dressrosa/Rebecca/Doflamingo story.
He also got beaten by X Drake, Caribou was supposed to be strong but then Oda decided to make him a logia punching bag.
Sorry to only answer now i just got back from work.
What i meant, is that this is suppose to be Kaido favourite island he would have atleast put someone who could at least fend off against Logias since the new world should be the one with more of then something that Scotch can't do.
Nice and bitter flashback.

Didn't realize at first but thunder soldier get a bandage after being bitten by the shark. Funy detail.
I have never heard anyone call the clubs suit clover except those whose first language/first language of people who taught them card games was not English.
Yeah well I'm first language english for 25 years, and have associated almost soley with first language english for those same 25. Just sayin'
Also the main point was the English playing cards are the same one as the French playing cards.
I don't really know what Spades is called in most of the world, but it could well be something like pike or sword in otehr regions too. Seems most likely to me Oda is taking whatever the Japanese call them and translating into Spanish.
Three out four are using the names from the English world. And again, I've heard them called clovers.
@wolfwoof:
He wasn't some deranged serial killer who went out of his way to torture people
I've always wondered where Oda's going with Caribou. He gave him hints of having a backstory to his hatred of the Marines right from the start. Then he gave him the burying-alive thing and had him set out to enslave the mermaids. But with that he also established that anyone Caribou 'buries alive' in his infinite-internal logia swamp is unharmed & in stasis until spat out again. Now the cover story is circling around to presenting him as becoming more heroic.
The moral compass in One Piece is a wobbly thing.
Neapolitan cards set, similar to the Spanish set
!
Little confused about the geography…are the Flower Fields on a hill above Acacia and the palace is on a hill above the Flower Fields?
@Monkey:

Well you're silly.

… we have two which are Spanish for 'clover' and 'diamond'. Clover is used in most languages (but NOT normally English). No idea about diamond except that it is in English and Spanish and not French. We haven't had the other two yet. The heart seat is empty so we won't get that anyway. So what we have makes it seem most likely that Oda's translating the Japanese names into Spanish (else looked up the Spanish names for the suits). Like do you really think he'd be translating the English names to Spanish? And he happened to look up the English names and get clover rather than club? I think not . . .
We haven't had the other two yet. The heart seat is empty so we won't get that anyway.
CORAZON is written on Law's coat
Clover forever. Clubs never
I think we'll be getting another flashback from Ricky or the Thunder Soldier, soon.
To add some folklore, the Italian for poker cards deck is
Cuori = Hearts = Hearts
Quadri = Squares = Diamonds
Fiori = Flowers = Clovers/Clubs
Picche = Spades = Spades
so did anybody notice the back of this boy… who oddly looks' like natsu's shirt? it says Mou-Shima - SEN.... Mashima Sensei? it's clear. Oda is taking subtle jabs at Mashima XD
Mou shimasen is just "i wont do it again".
Okay this just bugs me. How kinky does this go?
Yeah, with those pipe-ish legs.:ninja:
a king sets fire in the village? maybe it's a reference to the Roman emperor Nero.
Thought about it too.
why are people thinking this chapter makes rebbeca more likely to join the crew if anything it makes it lesslikely shell probably stay behind as princess of dressrosa when all this is over
Ikr? I can totally see the toy joining the SH and Rebecca becoming queen and proving that she can protect herself.
Bad chapter,
One piece is too slow , oda must do something maybe 30 pages per chapter
Just fuck off already.
It feels like Scarlet ought to be related to Violet
Oh, didn't notice this. I wonder if there really is a connection between the two of them.
As for the cover, I liked it, but I think Oda should experiment more with it. I mean, he keeps doing these cover arcs with a beginning, a middle and an end. And some of them, like Caribou's, are really dragged out. Imo, Oda could have shown Caribou beating the G5, meeting the old woman and fighting Scotch in like 6 covers. Then he could have changed character (maybe pick up some we haven't seen in a long time), and switch back to Caribou when the main story reached the point of Kaido's reveal or whatever Oda's planning to do here.
Doflamingo used his powers to control the king n force him to burn the village possibly. Loved the flashback!
Toy Soldier said that he will protect her until she's happy, so after Doflamingo goes down, he might not have anywhere to go, Mr. Soldier for NN? it be pretty cool to have a toy on the ship, but he may get turned back though so not sure lol
spanish cards
oro/gold–represented by a gold coin
copa/cup--represented by chalises
espada/sword-- represented by swords
basto/club-- represented by wood club
french cards
corazon/heart
diamante/diamond
trebol/clover– wich in america they call clubs
pica/spade
translation in some latin places for the french deck spade is espada .
in some german parts spade is pala because it resembles the head part of a shovel. pala = shovel
pica = espada = spade
trebol= clover but is named clubs sometimes
basto= club
cards in the US spade when translated to spanish can be either pica or espada
diamond when translated to spanish is diamante
heart when translated to spanish is corazon
clubs when translated to spanish is clubs; but in some places is called trebol because of the clover form
@Buggy:

It certainly looks that way, though I imagine that since his victims seem to be still aware of the control, it wouldn't work.
"Help! Something is moving my body! Help me men!"
Though I do wonder what DD can do with a corpse or comatose body (i.e. when his victim can't respond on his own)
Could just be something as simple as DD's men wearing Riku Royal uniforms and then torching the place. Worked for Baroque Works.
And the bad memories of Rebecca's grandfather/former king could also be a result of DF memory alteration.
I didn't expect a Rebecca flashback this soon, but I enjoyed every page of it.
It's a good thing that Oda kept the flashback contained in a single chapter instead of having it go on and kill the pacing. But I think there might be more to Rebecca's past that we'll probably see later on.
I think I might be one of the few posters who wants Rebecca to win the block, especially after seeing her get heckled and booed by the spectators.
I've always been a fan of stories where the underdog comes out on top.
Still I think that Dofla had his Toy-Toy man change all the strongest warriors into toys before starting his attacks
Does it mean something that Rebecca's laugh is Fufufu and Toy Sodlier says the same line as Jinbe? :ninja:
Absolutely want Rebecca to win now. And ideally against her DD family opponent too.
Cavendish just hasn't done anything to deserve it (and let's face it, he's the only other obvious contender).
Members of the Princesses(queen) Who Want Future Pirate King CoC(k) Club?
Certainly the new membership was mailed to Rebecca.…. Now I need to come up with a reason why the dwarf princess will join the club.
When Usoland helps frees her, she doesn't see its Usopp. Instead, first human she sees is Luffy so she mistakes him as the one who frees her. This leads her to joining the club :ninja:
Does it mean something that Rebecca's laugh is Fufufu and Toy Sodlier says the same line as Jinbe? :ninja:
Fufufu is common as all fuck. It's one of the most stereotypical Japanese transliterated laughs (DD is different. He's "Fuffuffu"). It's certainly not one of Oda's unique, invented laughs.
Thunder's wording isn't exactly the same as Jinbe's, but it's the same idea.
You make the Fighting Lion very sad with those words, C3.

OK thank you CCC
BTW
Just wait for Sanji using Anti Parage Shot and making Cavendish the ugliest man around the world… After it he will say the knight will step down for the princess :wub:

Or maybe because the dwarf girl choose who to mate with based on their appetite: the more they eat the more they're worth. And we know Luffy can eat a lot.
Very good, charming chapter; it gave us info about the country, a much needed emotional background for Rebecca and Toy Soldier, and man was that entrance into the arena 10 times better than I could've ever expected for Rebecca. She's universally hated, yes, but she basically got a double spread with everyone's attention put on her. I thought she'd be a nobody and yet she's quite a "celebrity". Also, for the very first time, my hopes went up regarding her possible fighting capabilities just because of the sheer grandness of that scene and the incredible build up to it. It was that good of an entrance. As if I wasn't hyped enough for Block D, now I just can't fucking wait.
Another thing that I noticed regarding the question of the king being crazy or not: the way Toy Soldier and the dwarves so proudly use the name The Royal Riku Fighters is pretty much setting in stone that Riku was not evil, and that all the shit was done by Doflamingo, behind the scenes Baroque Works style.
And btw, it's freaking obvious that this was just a tease of a backstory: we still need to know muuuuuuch more. Why did Scarlet and Rebecca live on their own selling flowers while being part of Dressrosa's royal family? When did the toy transformation thing begin? Who is Ricky and who is the Toy Soldier? Where does Kyros fit in all of this?
Also, Scarlett got killed far too fast for a background character, specially for someone who's no less than Rebecca's mother; I'm sure the bigger flashback will go even further back in time, back when Scarlett was part of the royal family and what made her leave said family with Rebecca, so we'll get to see more of her. This page is a DEAD giveaway that we're faaaar from done with this Kyros/Ricky/Riku/Toy Soldier/Rebecca drama. So those feeling like these guys ARE NOT AND SHOULD NOT BE IMPORTANT, then I'm sorry but you've got another thing coming.
And last but not least, in retrospect this is just a fantastic tease on Oda's part. Just seeing this huge attention to detail speaks volumes about the author, and it's these things that set him apart from the majority of his peers.
This arc will have so much re-reading value.
Loving the theory of the thunder soldier being kyros. Also, to everyone that says Diamante is the toy fruit user I hope he smashes you when he transforms into his Bull hybrid form.
cavendish point in the story is as a lot of the other fighters. they were there to slowly establish who was stronger.
at the end of block C being Luffy and chingao over every other combatant by a landslide (even though they were hyping up the other people)
in block B they used bellami and a couple of others and established bartolomeo as very strong or very capable.
cavendish has been hyped a lot. specially with his squabble with don chingao. So when rebecca beats him, people will not think or stop thinking she is weak. thus making her worthy at being with jesus, bart and luffy as the finalist.
@CCC:

Well, didn't Doflamingo say that the Riku family had been exploiting the kingdom for "centuries"?
I'd sort of hope there's some historical involvement there (possibly connecting to the Void Century, as the dwarf chief suggested), rather than Doflamingo just fooling everybody so he can take over.
so did anybody notice the back of this boy… who oddly looks' like natsu's shirt? it says Mou-Shima - SEN.... Mashima Sensei? it's clear. Oda is taking subtle jabs at Mashima XD
I thought the boy looked like Coby ^^
We now know Rebbeca's age, more or less. She is less than 20 years old.
@CCC:
Absolutely want Rebecca to win now. And ideally against her DD family opponent too.
Cavendish just hasn't done anything to deserve it (and let's face it, he's the only other obvious contender).
Cavendish could just be out looking for Luffy. I really think Cavendish loose more to his character when he loose to Rebecca than the other way around. While do want her to win I think the best way for that to happen is to make Cavendish be out of the ring. In fact that's the only way in my opinion. Even Bellamy couldn't pull the emotional win over the hype win. And I doubt strenght is important as much for Bart character than Cavendish.
But if Cavendish is there I hope he'll comment on her great skill.
I guess the real mystery now is what happened with the King, how did DD fame him, or was he actually something of a bad King?
The "this is Alabasta 2.0" theory is getting more legitimate every chapter. The biggest difference I can see is that this probably won't end the Saga, and we're introduced to the princess's peril on site. Given the whole DD family hasn't even started having a presence yet, there might even be crew-wide fights, though then again, it's difficult to imagine Oda introducing all these non-Strawhat powerhouses and not have them hog more of the action…
So after this it's a one on one match with the DD familys gladiators
Then it's a battle royale betwenn the four winners and Diamante?

Personally, I don't think a character who really wants to kill someone, and is being hyped uped necessarily looses any personality if it were to turn out he couldn't beat a character who's being downplayed. Exactly what character development would he be getting if he actually got close to killing Luffy anyway?
Is that big smiling guy near the bottom right of the 'badass shot' Rolling Logan? Just guessing, but the hair, smile, and curved brow seem similar. Of course, this could just be me being over-expectant of Oda and thinking he would put a small detail like that into a shot like this.
@wolfwoof:

Its not well defined. I hope its some sort of 4v4 with the champ winners and DD guys, since that would both be awesome to see and skip over 7 single-elimination matches that would drag out the plot.
@wolfwoof:

Thinking about another battle royale with the 4 blocks winner and the 4 from the family with sqme rule as the blocks than the winner fights Diamente.

Guess that could be fun. Doffy's guys might specialize in team fighting
And it would give Bart a chance to help his idol

I'll quote myself in here to answer that:
