2012 Presidential Election Discussion

I'm starting to wonder who will run in 2016 regardless of current winner.
If Romney wins he will probably suck a huge dick, so I don't expect more than one term.
And if Obama wins I don't think Biden has the potential to amount to much more than a side man so I highly doubt he will run after Obama.Republicans….Rubio? Christie?
Democrats....Hilarry? Cuomo?I would orgasm with joy if it was a Christie Vs. Cuomo election.

If Romney wins then the world might as well end.
Though chances are he won't.
And if he does?
Then that's fucked up. -
Given Romney's hollowness as a human being, something tells me he's, in all reality, about as devout a Mormon as you or me.

Normanlly, I don't like making fun of people who are easy to make fun of. But I just love that Romney thinks his Salt Lake City Olympics experience is even something useful. It's population is nearly 200, 000. That's it. I live in Minnapeolis, which isnt even the capitol of Minnesota, which is practically a hick state, and we have 100,000 more. I mean, come on Romney. Also, just show us your effing tax returns. We coughed up the birth certificate.
Okay, thats it. Im done. Thank you.

He'll also be second-term Reagan old, and that's old.

I mean sure America will just become toxic for outside investments depending on how much he screwed your enconomy. But realistically China is already becoming a major economic centre buying up a lot of resources and they are not just suddenly going to lose half a billion people.
As Neil DeGrasse Tyson(I think spelling) pointed out since the investment in sciences and technology has been decreasing America, they will continue to be outdone by countries with less reliance on them or America's need to placate their religious or business ideologies.
Stem Cell research is continuing around the world and will patent life saving/changing technology.
Clean Energy Research - means Oil and Oil based buisnesses will lose their grip on economies.
International Space research will mean the pioneering efforts of America will be lost you might be the first to the moon but imagine if India or China is first to Mars and claim an entire planet and its reasources for them to sell to the rest of the world. No the world won't end - it'll just adapt and just continue to do what they are already doing which watching the USA go from somewhere they looked up to, to being just another country.

I've seen that propsoed as one of the reasons that he doesn't release his taxes; Mormons are supposed to tithe a tenth of their income to their local church and Romney may not have been doing that.

@Monkey:
In a non-partisan sense my problem with Romney is feels like a guy who just runs for president because he can, like he sees it as a feather in his cap, something to throw money at win or lose. I don't sense the slightest ounce of passion in him, which for instance I can't deny for people who frighten me like Michelle Bachman.
I don't like the idea of a guy like that winning, almost as if he'll be filled in by advisors and lobbyists rather than his own policies. In a sense you don't really know what you're voting for or even not voting for.
I feel somewhat similar about Linda Mcmahon in my state senator race wise, she just keeps running and throwing money at us without ever seeming like she cares much.First, I can't claim to know much about politics. I tend to learn as much as I need to in order to make an informed decision and then stop. It's all just too depressing.
Having said that, I think I agree. I tend to feel the same way about Romney. What really kills me about him is that even behind the giant PR wall that candidates hide behind, he still just seems like an ass. Had I not already made up my mind about him for the most part, I think the Olympics probably would have made me hate the guy. Between him pissing off England, and claiming that he doesn't know, care, or have any interest in what his wife's horse was doing in the Olympics, I gotta wonder what part of him is actually shielded from the public eye.
Normanlly, I don't like making fun of people who are easy to make fun of. But I just love that Romney thinks his Salt Lake City Olympics experience is even something useful. The kicker is that he hardly even did anything more than take credit.

He'll also be second-term Reagan old, and that's old.
Likewise this is why I'm super skeptical of another Clinton run, she would be damn old for a president. Even if she does try she will be really hard pressed to overcome that.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Why ?
It would be the whole country voting for two hard headed guys from round' my way. It would be cool.
Also realize the South has dominated American politics for quite some time, recall how every winning Democrat since Johnson has been from the South until Obama won.
Seeing a Northeast election would be cool. -
Wow I just realize something Romney and Obama have one thing in common….,
The both will make history as being the 'firsts''
That's IF Romney wins. He will be America's first Mormon president in a similar way to Obama being America's first black president.
Interesting......

Lol, hadn't thought of that. But I wonder if he does go to mass every Sunday. LDS mass is a grueling 3-hour boredomfest, probably lost time a presidential campaign can't really afford when they could be slapping a hunting cap on him for another photo op

Thing is you can't just turn an economy around easily without pissing off a lot of people.
-
Eventhough some of those people don't have much to be pissed about. Like the "you can't raise taxes on the job creators" crowd.
-
If you don't want to pay high taxes, the solution is simple.
Don't make any money and live in near-poverty. DUH.
-
You'd still pay sales tax even in that scenario; those are worse though since you can't get those refunded and don't have credits that take care of sales tax like you do with income taxes.

I've actually seen conservatives say that they'll quit their jobs and live off welfare if Obama gets re-elected. Of course that's largely because they've been told for years how cushy life is on welfare by millionaires like the talking heads on Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

Conservative voters or Conservative Politicians or both?
-
Voters. There might have been some politicians claim this as well as a few business owners, but I've actually seen regular, working class people make this claim as well.
Of course some of the people have also said that they'll move to Canada in the event Obama wins as well. I guess their position is "If I'm going to have government healthcare, it might as well be a single-payer system." That or they don't even realize that Canada has nationalized health care, which is possible.

I kind of hope someone will say they're going to move to Canada so I can see their face when I tell them Canada already has what they're trying to get away from. If they don't already know that is. You can't always tell.
-
I know right?
And private insurance still exists in Canada, and is needed for your dental, vision, prescription, certain medical supplies, and special surgery coverage/some specialists >> People still have to work and pay for that additional coverage, the government is only paying for your doctors visits/some special doctors and services/hospital. Loads of people are on maintenance meds and we all need to go to the dentist and get regular eye exams… There isn't much of a difference, except there are higher taxes to help cover EVERY citizen's basic medical costs.... And why is that such a bad thing? It's not welfare, it's looking out for the well-being of each and every citizen (and isn't that what country's are supposed to do >>).
And correct me if I'm wrong, but in Canada don't you have to present your government health card in order to be seen and have the services administered covered? They don't just let people walk in and be seen without it, right? Unless someone is in need of critical care/dying, I don't see why this couldn't be enforced.... But that's my opinion. I don't think its right in this developed nation, with all the advances in medicine and healthcare options out there, that many citizens don't have access to it because they either lost their jobs, are disabled (but don't qualify for SS/passed the age limit for disability) don't work in a job that even offers insurance coverage... Why is having that security of being able to see a doctor when you fall on hard times such a bad thing to so many people? You'd rather just see your fellow Americans die, that "they aren't working hard enough otherwise they would have what they need?" BS XP From working in a pharmacy... It's hard to see a lot of people that came in who were having to chose between their health and food. In this day and age, that's not right. Especially when a mother cries because she lost her job and insurance and can't pay for her child's doctor/insulin (and her husband's job doesn't offer insurance, and with his income they make slightly more then that pitiful cut-off rate for medicaid services) Oh yes, they're rich and well-off. Indeed.

I have talked to many people who believe that their taxes shouldn't be going to helping out other people. My family included. Their exact words are "Why should my money be going to another person?". I don't understand why this is such an alienating concept to people in the US. -
Yeah, exactly @_@ I used to have that mentality as well, but something like nationalized healthcare benefits EVERYONE. Even if you are fortunate and can afford private coverage that gets you to better doctors/services, if something ever happened, that safety net is there. If something like this ever came about in the US, I'm sure there would be a clause where some specialists and doctors could opt-out of accepting the nationalized insurance, just like doctors that don't take medicaid/medicare (sometimes making an exception if their current patient had private insurance before and switched to government insurance). So you'll still have the option of choosing doctors and specialists who aren't on the general government insurance list and get your shorter waittimes and all that jazz. And you already wait half a day or more to get into emergency rooms (unless something is seriously wrong with you) or general clinics (the kinds that take ALL of the insurances) >_> Not much is REALLY going to change on that front… And then if you find yourself where you don't have private insurance, you wait for the general clinic doctor... you get your diagnosis/prescription/treatments... and you leave, without paying a dime there. If you're frequently ill, you'll probably pay less in taxes then you'll pay with $200-500+ in doctor bills alone every month/each time you go.
It'd also be nice if they'd give goverment garaunteed paid maternity leave (apparently the US is the only first world nation that doesn't offer this?) and sick leave (both without fear of being fired) so you could take care of yourself properly and not come to work sick and gross and get everyone else all nasty with your funkiness... Hopefully that'll happen here, someday.
I can't say for sure what it would take to fix this country. Common sense I think should dictate if people learn to live within their MEANS and focus on what they need to survive and be content with what they have (something I'm working on myself), then we can deal with higher taxes and a lot of people who are in the red right now would be able to manage just fine. Just because you can seemingly afford a giant house with a $3000 mortage... do you really NEED that? Or a car with a $600 payment. Or a boat. Or the biggest TV on the market? Dude, I went up to Toronto and my eyes bulged out of my head with I saw that the sales tax in the city proper was 15%!!!! That sounds insane to me, but when I see how nice the city was, the thriving local businesses, and the fact that people weren't going to have to worry about what happens if they get sick… I was totally cool with that. And no one struck me as lazy or ungrateful... ((What also shocked me is, I'm fat, but I know many many many many many people a lot larger then myself... and hell just walk into Walmart and look around... Dude I swear I felt like the fattest person around, I saw like 3 people larger then me. 3!!! And I WAS THE FATTEST PERSON IN A CANADIAN WALMART. I wanted to die of embarassment. But it really got me thinking.... Seeing how much healthier and fitter most people appeared there and the fact that the drug selections at the retail pharmacies I saw there were like about a third of what you'd find in an American pharmacy (and seeing the drugs that were expensive RX only in the US only $10 OTC there... and the psuedophedrine OTC... and the fact some blood sugar meters that were $80 here were $10 there...)... Why do people think this is a bad idea? Sounds like a lot of heart-ache and eventually a lot of dollars are going to be saved in the long run... And heck, I'm an emotional eater. Many overweight folks are, and if they had access to the proper care and counseling they needed to overcome that hurdle, there'd be less obesity problems, yeah? And then ultimately, you'll be throwing less money down the toliet into healthcare costs, because a lot of our problems with healthcare spending is in regards to the massive amount of health issues that are largely obesity related.

I have talked to many people who believe that their taxes shouldn't be going to helping out other people. My family included. Their exact words are "Why should my money be going to another person?". I don't understand why this is such an alienating concept to people in the US.
Unless you're rich it's NOT really entirely! Because any one of us could fall into that shit really at any time, it's exactly like paying insurance in that sense lol.
And I think it's that "any time" thing that eludes a lot of people. They don't really understand yet how fickle and fragile the human body is, how out of fucking nowhere serious shit hits you. At best they may beleive in myths about "if I eat perfectly, exercise perfectly, look both ways before I cross the street, I'll NEVER need serious medical help till I'm on Medicare!". Which is a dangerous fantasy.
If we have public schooling, public mailing, public fire fighting and public law enforcement, I really don't see how "care of life and limb" is so far from people's tolerances. -
^ Exactly. My grandma believed going to the doctor was stupid. She was exercising, eating healthy (according to her… unfortunately truth be told, many of the low fat stuff actually contains a bunch of shit thats toxic in the human body, even if you don't gain much weight from it), and thought she was taking care of herself.... Never thought she needed routine medical exams and all of those screenings you should get when you reach a certain age. So she was blind sided when she found out she had very advanced cancer. Luckily she had insurance and could afford treatment that extended what little time she had left.
Now this is happening to many people all over the country. Many people who DON'T have insurance (or shit coverage)... Good, hard-working honest Americans who've spent their lives putting back into the system and generally being good people/good contributors to the common good. It could be anyone you know. Most people now know someone who has cancer/has died from cancer. They deserve to die and spend their last days suffering because they "Obviously were not working hard enough, or they would have a good job that provided good insurance."? That they weren't decent or hard working because they didn't have or couldn't afford insurance? Yes, people have this mentality and it's disgusting. It's horrible to watch someone you love die or suffer unbearable pain. Many people are suffering, or having to watch their loved ones suffer because there is no affordable option available. And many people won't get on disability or welfare even if they qualify because they're so ashamed of the stigma.
-

Far as medical care go, making sure everybody has some form of medical insurance would lower rates considerably on everybody; as is, a lot of people tend to put off care until the last moment or rely heavily on emergency room visits that they can't pay for. Since the hospitals are stuck with so many patients that they can't collect money from, they pass the costs on to everybody else. That's one of the reasons that funding cuts to organizations like Planned Parenthood are so idiotic; less screening for things like breast cancer means that earlier, cheaper measures to remove cancerous tissues will be traded for more drastic procedures that cost far more. Higher taxes or not, everybody having insurance would save people money in the long run simply because the dip in their premiums would almost certainly be larger than the increased taxes.
Now that insurance companies can't simply cut people off after a certain amount has been spent on them, that means that they either have to have more people in the system to cover those costs (hence the Republican idea of the individual mandate) or simply raise premiums on everybody (which is now prevented by cost controls). Of course, the only real answer is to abandon the current system and switch to a single-payer, but that's impossible in the current political climate even if it is inevitable. Just a question of how many people have to die first.
-

I live in an area that's full of conservatives on welfare. It's the most messed up thing I've ever seen. They don't even understand what it means, but Fox News is left on at about half the businesses that leave a TV on for people.
They definitely don't lead a very cushy life, though. I'd never want to live in that part of town. Even visiting it is bad enough.

Wowowowowow.
Audit the Fed? NO recognition of same-sex couples, even in civil unions? A Constitutional Amendment requiring a supermajority to approve ANY tax increase, and capping all government spending in the future?
Wow.

Just a quick question that popped up in my head. Why would auditing the federal reserve be a bad thing? Don't they have some form of internal audits carried out occasionally? I'm legitimately not well versed on the subject so I hope you don't mind answering.

The Log Cabin Republicans managed to convince them to include a line in the platform about respecting the dignity of everybody, but the rest of the platform pretty much says "Just don't expect that dignity to include equal rights."
Anyway, I'm guessing they're probably pissed at Akins for framing the "No exceptions for rape" before they could.

Yeah, they already have internal audits that they're required to provide to Congress, who then take that and exert control over taxation.
When they say, "Audit the Fed" they mean they wanna see EVERYTHING. Absolutely everything lent to whom, what banks asked for money, etc.
Currently the Federal Reserve ensures the stability of banks at the cost of transparency - my understanding is that they give out numbers on what was loaned, but don't provide specific information on which banks asked for loans, because that kind of information would both subject banks to whims of the market (investors would be able to see which banks were asking for money and jump ship accordingly) AND make them less likely to ask for money when they really need it. It would be nice to understand in more detail which banks were going to the Fed responsibly for money, BUUUUT… the Fed is pretty forthcoming considering it has the annual audit, weekly balance sheets, and a few other tools. The question is whether knowing more than that is a good thing.
The big problem with auditing the Fed is that the Federal Reserve shouldn't be directly subject to political whims of whoever is currently in charge.
A Congress that can "Audit the Fed" in the kind of detail that many in Congress (especially Republicans but also many Democrats) are advocating for can put pressure on the Fed to change interest rates for short term political gain.Which is Very Bad.
When you pair it with the fact that the Conservative platform is currently "no new taxes" / "you need a supermajority to raise taxes" you have a group of people making very short-sighted fiscal decisions for political reasons,
In order to frame their fallacious argument of trickle-down economics and prevent anybody from doing anything about their control over it.
Congress is supposed to use the information given by the Fed to tax as necessary, but Republicans apparently think we won't need higher taxes ever in the future ever, lol,
unless a supermajority of rich-folks overwhelmingly agree on it.The result will be slashed budgets and the gutting of programs like Soc. Security and Medicare.

This sounds like all the stereotypical republican antics wrapped up into one package. Have we started living in a cartoon? Does the GOP spend it's time sitting in poorly lit rooms, stroking their cats and caressing their bar handle mustaches? Because it certainly feels like it.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Really, how do they expect to win? They're attacking minorities, veterans, women and the entire middle class and below. Only people I'd see voting for them are rich white men.
-
The one thing I don't get is… why one earth do people who work minimum wage vote republican?
-
Because conservatives who are in charge of the Republican party are experts at confusing voters by oversimplifying the complicated issues of politics and playing really, really dirty by doing things like making them afraid of minorities.
Because the public is largely uneducated about the way politics work because of decades of misspeak, misinformation, and unchecked lies, because the news doesn't do its job because money.Because apathy created by exhausting faith in the usefulness of government almost always benefits conservatives rather than liberals (conservatives want less gov't involvement, liberals want more gov't involvement).
So even if conservative lawmakers bring Congress to a screeching halt, liberals and all of government look bad too because the Constitution prevents them from doing fuckall about it.Because if you can intentionally damage faith in what the government can do while still maintaining a vicegrip over its workings by using dirty politics,
You can slowly, but surely continue to institute policies that protect big corporations and crap on the underclass until it's too late to do anything about them.
And because thanks to the checks and balances in place in Government it's very difficult to course correct once things are thoroughly corrupted. Thus, until enough people realize how well and truly fucked we are, we are well and truly fucked.
And may god have mercy on our polls. -
Maybe most people are increasingly terrified, and there's people I know who think we're headed down an abyss of extremism.
But me I'm excited as hell lol. Contrary to all that thinking? This sort of thing is going to explode itself, and really really badly, the demographics aren't in their favor mostly. But even in a static society this is going too hard too fast too extreme. They're gonna smash into a wall, and at the speed they're going it's going to be amazing to watch.

And even people who associate with the party realize just how nuts they are, (and these are the impressions that I get from working in a convalescent/nursing care center in what's largely considered the most Republican/Conservative county in my state, not kidding when I say that I've heard nothing but groaning with regards to Ryan being selected as Romney's running mate).
I still think that Obama will get re-elected but I also do kind of hope the GOP crashes and burns in the aforementioned blaze come the election, if only for the far out hope that they'll all come to the realization that the extremeness they've been putting out and putting in charge aren't doing themselves or people any good and a big overhaul is in proper order for the party.
-
@Thousand:
Really, how do they expect to win? They're attacking minorities, veterans, women and the entire middle class and below.
Voter suppression is one tool; look at Ohio and the argument over letting Republican districts have longer early voting periods than Democratic districts and the various Voter ID laws that purport to solve a nonexistent voter fraud problem.
Far as demographics screwing them over, that's inevitable so long as they beat the "Blame the filthy Meskans" drum, it's just a question as to how much damage they can inflict first. Austerity measures and cuts to entitlements would kill off the Republican Party, but not before inflicting lasting damage to the economy and society at large.
-
I might be wrong, but I always thought that people in this country have a superiority complex where many of them think they are just as well off as the upper crust. And that if the rich think they are being "supressed" by taxes, then so are they. Because the rich have enough money to afford whatever healthcare they need, so does the middle class joe who has a stable job and benefits (and still ignores the posibility that they're just a peon that's liable to layoffs like any other peon), and they assume everyone must be the same way.
I'm having a hard time coming up with the right words to explain it, but it just comes down to commercialism/materialism and what the media has shown us that the "True" or "Happy" American is someone making 500K+ a year, driving a maserati, wearing all the designer labels and having all the latest gadgets. And that's affected everyone of every income level. So much to where making sure you look "good" is more important then making sure your business is taken care of. Then people bitch and moan about paying more taxes and paying for healthcare when they'd have the money and more if they'd just stop trying to think they're only as good as the rich if they have all the same stuff that they do. I think thats a huge part of what's wrong with this country and why spending is a mess. (even when compared to foreign policy, they feel they have to do a lot of ass kissing and charity to be seen as "ok" by the rest of the world… when a lot of the rest of the world is looking down on us because our finances are in shambles and we don't do a lot to take care of our own people)
@Monkey:
Cancer is a strange animal, there are obvious things that can get you it, like smoking and stuff. But other types….doctors aren't even sure. I had Thyroid Cancer and the best they could figure it might have possibly maybe kind of sort of could have been getting x-rays alot?
Since conditions like hypothyroidism and such are autoimmune disorders that can be related to genetics, I would think its possible that thyroid cancers/the mutations that occur could also be contributed to some of the same factors. My grandma's sister had issues with her thyroid throughout her young adult life, she started getting tumors all over it to the point they had to take it out to stop it (she also just had a total hysterectomy due to uterine cancer that was beginning to spread, but apparently the surgery took care of it all and its good). Late in life, my great grandmother (my grandmother and great aunts mother) also developed Type 1 Diabetes, which is extremely rare to develop in a grown adult, and is usually contributed to an autoimmune disorder as well.
And about 3 years ago I discovered I have underactive thyroid, but it's been just fine since starting medication for it and I haven't had anymore issues with it. But that worries me.
Any and everything can give you cancer pretty much. From the foods you eat, the stuff you drink, the chemicals and toxins in our water supply that you drink, absorb thru your skin or inhale taking a hot shower, electromagnetic waves, radio waves, etc. etc. Though even before the advent of such things and introduction of these foreign manmade toxins and substances we contribute to cancer now, there were still many people dying of cancer in centuries past. There were probably a lot more then we think, even though it was known, not every person that passed away from natural causes was dissected and examined for cause of death.
And the causes of cancer can be totally different in each person. Both of my grandmothers died from colon cancer. My dad's mother smoked 3 packs a day, for who knows how long. And as I said in my previous post, my mom's mother never smoke or drank and was generally in good health. But I know she ate a lot of health food full of known dangerous toxins, and she had been doing this for years. She also spent 10 years apparently barely eating nothing but this food just one meal a day because she was so worried about being fat. She stopped her metabolism and who knows what else. This very well could've contributed.
All you really can do is stay informed, try to do whats best for your body, and stay in as good of health as you possibly can. And go to the doctor if you ever feel that something is not right.. Or not. Because our tax dollars should not go to saving lives. Because early screening and detection services for cancer and other debilitating diseases is not going to keep more people out of hospitals and chemo treatments and ultimately lower healthcare spending.

After reading the GOPs upcoming game plan, I'm gonna go forward with my plan to move to Australia if Romney somehow wins this election…

Pretty sure Australia is a shithole too.

Pretty sure Australia is a shithole too.
As an Australian.
Please explain the reasoning and rational behind that statement. -
I don't normally discuss the election online (it makes me want to smash my computer too often), but I thought you guys might appreciate this: "One Term More", a pro-Obama political parody to the tune of 'One More Day' from Les Miserables, featuring Broadway performers David Burnham ("Wicked"), Kim Huber ("Sunset Boulevard," "Beauty and the Beast"), Christina Saffran Ashford, Damon Kirsche and David Engel among others.
I'm dying for written out lyrics for it, since I know I'm missing some gem lines; I especially liked the ones about being "fed up with pernicious talk of prostitutes and sluts", and wanting a Jedi, not a Sith.
