From what I've heard of Justin Beiber, he actually had to work his ass off in order to get as popular as he's gotten, gaining him a bit of respect from me. And in light of his and Gaga's donations, I think I might actually like them on a certain level. Not their music, but themselves, at any rate. And besides, Gaga was always pretty cool to me; I've always admired her ability to wear whatever the hell she wants in public without regret. Good for them. <3

@No:
I did think the same, but I was thinking more along the lines of how many people in both the distribution will be able to keep their jobs for the time being, and how many shops will be able to operate as a whole.
Oh what's that piece of shit mayor of Tokyo doing through all this ? Has he made his salary even remotely worth it ?
I just checked SJ website. They are gonna release the magazine's next number tomorrow. In addition, ANN, a very well informed site, said nothing about any magazine delays.
And politics can go and fuck themselves for me.
-
You….may not know what I mean by that.
Basicly the current mayor of Tokyo is a hypocrite asshole who started his writing career on rape novels and said that women who continue to live when they can't reproduce are "committing a sin". And he also pushed the manga censorship act and wanted to do the same to the internet.
So I am very curious if he's actualy doing something usefull for once.

Oh, that? His paranoid that makes him believe porn manga is being sold to minors? Well, the answer is what I said about politics. Politics hardly do something useful, and that idiot is no exception.
Also, the thought of a politic trying to control internet makes me laugh every time I hear something along these lines. They clearly have no idea about what internet is.

Good for him. I must also commend two Western artists. You may dislike their music, but you gotta hand it to Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. They donated millions of dollars from their personal funds to Japan, with more to come.
Shows that when the chips are down, you know that there are good people still around. :-)
EDIT: Also, if I recall, Ke$ha donated a large amount of money too, somewhere around two million.
Here's a (most likely incomplete) list of celebrities voicing their support and encouraging/giving donations for Japan.

I wonder how much of that is Bieber doing that or his producers saying to do it for good publicity.
-
My take on spamming donation buttons around: Donate in a few months, not now. There is more than enough money right now. More money now will not result in more lifes saved. Keep your money for now and donate it when they start rebuilding schools, hospitals, houses and roads. Because by that time there will be a dire need for donations and everyone else will have moved on to the next catastrophe. Or as I've posted in the Wikileaks thread a while ago:
@m00n:Wikileaks is right now getting what I call the natural disaster treatment. Public empathy is characterized by the digital age. As a result the of public outrage changes it's target every week. Last week it was the assassination of that Punjab Governor, Salmaan Taseer. It happens with all kinds of news but upon natural disasters it's actually measurable. You will see peek donation levels within 48 hours after the catastrophe even though one can hardly estimate the damage and no one has reasonable plans on what is to be done with the money in order to help efficiently on long term. By the time such plans have been made they often cannot be financed anymore because the money has vanished in obscure pockets and no one donates to this specific disasters funds anymore.
I will revive thise thread 6 months from now if it dies in the meantime.
-

And then you realize, that it doesn't matter one bit!
A donation is a donation regardless of the intention. -

I am not a Bieber fan either, but I was watching him on Jimmy Kimmle live not long ago and I must admit that I got a sense from him that he's not a bad guy. You can't hate on people just because they are successful and are rich, unless they really act like a douche.
Bieber, Gaga, and anyone else who donates their own money to this cause… Great for them and I hope many other people with money follow. I know America is not rich and is suffering right now, but we can spare at least some of our funds, and especially those with more money than they know what to do with.
-
Isn't Beiber the douche that egged a cop, and got off scott free?
-
if i was near someone who egged a cop and got off scott free, i'd give that motherfucker a brofist.

Due to the nuclear reactor being out of commission, the Tokyo area is in a state of emergency: Energy deficiency.
They are going to implement a MASSIVE energy sanctions to the area.
In short, many hours of every day all through out the month of March and April will have a electricity downtime. Up to 7 hours a day, I believe.
The downtime schedule is shifted from area to area. This is going to have some massive economical consequences, but alas, there's really no choice in the matter.
There simply aren't enough active generators to keep the entire Kantou region going.…........ and yes, imbecile NEETs bitching about their internet going down has already commenced. sigh

Oh man.
So that means that from time to time, places like zoos and aquariums are going to be without any power, because that power will instead be diverted to the Kantou region, right?

Kind of minor in light of everything else, but
I knew there was a reason I liked him so much.
Never liked his music but that's awesome

The only artist I like out of the bunch is Lady Gaga but other than that it's good to hear that celebritys are not as stuck up as I thought of them to be
This is for everyone who wanted to use my pic in their avvie or sig to show support for Japan:

If you have any comments on the pic itself, just go to my art thread. c: Anyone is allowed to use this.
Awesome, i'm going to use that.
Has anyone been reading the Mangastream FB page? my god some of these kids are heartless, they care more about whether or not a series will come out than the well being of the people. It's like there going: well fuck them if they all die just as long as I get to read a chapter next week. People like that make me really mad cause if it was them and there family in that situation they'd want the whole world to stop for them.
-
Manga/anime fans' entitlement issues aren't anything new.
-
Well there's going to be facilities and regions exempt from the energy down.
The main economic center of Tokyo won't have downtimes, and I'm sure neither will hospitals.Dunno about zoos and aquariums.
-
When it comes to people whining about wanting to see the next chapter of a series despite the disaster that's reaked havoc all over Japan, I try to ignore it. I look more to those who are trying to help the people caught in the disaster and those who are banding together for the cause and who are giving up time and energy for the unlucky who've been affected in Japan. I try not to dwadle on the little black smudges on society, and focus on the positive aspects.
Then again, I have been accused of being way too positive by my friends…

Sai-chan is right, we shouldn't dwell too much on whatever tasteless things people have to say in response to this disaster, it's not worth getting in a fit about.

Is Shueisha part of the economic center? However, I honestly don't think that regular manga should be publishing with what's going on. People need food, clothing, shelter and medical care first. Maybe some manga specifically aimed at comforting kids would be proper.

Many years ago - nearly 20 my family had accepted a Japanese Exchange Studant from Rotary. Her name is Yoko around 5 years ago we heard she was married and with child, unfortunately since then not much as she has lived her life and we ours - people just drift apart sometimes you know.
We have no idea if she is ok or how her family is :(
The footage rips you appart - seeing houses - cars and knowing there were people inside them and each ones had families the brain almost shuts down contimplating it.
-
Oh shit, I thought things stabilized now, are there gonna be more deaths, is everyone on the forums gonna be okay, how about oda, greg, well I'll be praying for you guys, I don't think it will help much but it's the best I can do right now, wish you all good luck

Large Tsunami in North East Japan?
-
On 9/11, one Parisian newspaper's headline was, "Today, we are all American."
Well, starting now, we are all Japanese. Solidarity, love, and support will see this through.
-
I know the disaster just happened–I have family and friends over there--I am directly connected to this thing, but saying companies should just stop producing "out of respect" isn't really realistic, nor is it respectful, actually, and an overall policy of that sort could lead to the entire economic collapse of the country. People need to work so their companies can pay them and they can get their lives back to normal.
Already, within the first 5 minutes of opening this morning, the Nikkei fell over 5% in reaction to this crisis. Of course lives are more important, but financial health is important to the future of the people and the country as a whole as well. Economic disaster on top of this devastation would not help anyone--those businesses are not being unrealistic or disrespectful to try to keep things going. Just saying. Let's not get carried away, lol.
And yeah, we are all Japanese at this moment. And I heard there is another Tsunami warning in effect right now as well.
-
Already a disastrous situation going worse. Hope the best for those surviving this, R.I.P. the unfortunate ones.

**ALERT: POSSIBLE BLAST AT DAIICHI NO. 3 REACTOR: REPORT» ALERT: 3 METRE TSUNAMI TO REACH PACIFIC COAST IN MINUTES**
20 minutes ago, there was another possible explosion at Fukushima #1 nuclear power plant, white smoke seen, and sounds of an explosion at number 3 reactor. It was a hydrogen explosion, which would've blown away the outer casing. As for the Tsunami, there was a 6.5 magnitude quake/aftershock an hour ago, and they detected a sealevel change of 5 metres, with waves of 3 metres (9 feet) heading towards the shore. Possible Tsunami, not sure as of yet.
Edit: ok, no Tsunami, it was just a sealevel change, however there's live video of the explosion at reactor 3, it was the similar explosion that happened to reactor 1 earlier, when the hydrogen and oxygen ignited under the reactor, blowing away the outer walls, not sure on the radiation leak as of yet, however they're saying reactor containment vessel has not been breached and they're still pumping water to cool it.
-
Are the reports of another tsunami true?
-
The power plants are being dealt with and as of now there's, thankfully, little to be concerned about for the moment given wind patterns. In fact the biggest concern right now is when, and to what extent, the material that has already been released will reach the US.
It's NOT reason to start panic. The amount radiation released at its worst measured level was equivalent to 3 stomach x-rays.
So for the moment the biggest concern are the involuntary blackouts that began to be drawn up last night. Kiyomi Tsujimoto (of whom I'm not a big fan to begin with) is in charge of the plan and volunteer services and they decided it would be a good idea to ANNOUNCE the plan late last night and then announce the actual regions LATER that evening.
To give you an idea of the area affected by these blackouts, there are 42 million people living in the Kanto area. That's Gunma, Tochigi, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo & Kanagawa. That's an area just a bit larger than New Jersey. Of that area, majority of the people actually live in a region just over HALF of that size. That's where the blackouts will be occuring by block.
Every day many if not MOST of those 42 million commute by train.
Last night the blackouts were originally described as 'indiscriminate'. This meant hospitals, stoplights and television stations would be affected and have to run on on-site generators.
Now again, they announced this late last night, only confirming locations even later.
Come on folks.
There was some saving grace in that the initial blackouts did not seem to occur as scheduled but I'm already getting reports from friends and family in Tokyo that area trains are not moving in designated blocks and people are unable to get to work.
criznazy.
-
Reactor 3 exploded!
-
That's really insane, Greg. I cannot imagine.
-
Reactor 3 exploded!
Source?
Sounds contradicting to what the miscarried insurgent is reporting.
-
Right here, Renegade.
-
It's still fine. This is what they predicted as early as yesterday. It only released hydrogen. Whether radioactive material is in the gas depends on whether the fuel cells partially melted or not WHICH AT THIS POINT there does not seem to be.
-
They are saying just that, Greg, although we are being told here that it's too hot for them to confirm whether there is actual melting involved. Still, the containment shells, for lack of a better word, are still intact and working as they ought, so no worry at this moment.
the next Tsunami is being reported as spotted at 10 feet tall off the coast. To give that some perspective, the original Tsunami that hit and devastated everything was 23 feet tall, so they are saying.
-
2000 bodies found on the shores of the Miyagi Prefecture!
-
Is it just me or is the recent footage of the nuclear sites foggy? Is it just the distance/weather? or is it actually caused by aerial debris?
2000 bodies found on the shores of the Miyagi Prefecture!
Confirmed Dead? Injured?
-
It's steam and smoke from the recent release of gas and smoke from the explosion, I believe, Renegade
-
Although there hasn't been any serious levels of radiation reports, that steam and smoke brings an unsettling feeling.

Because by that time there will be a dire need for donations and everyone else will have moved on to the next catastrophe.
I'm not understanding this. There's already more than enough money to go around to help with the disaster? Should the Red Cross just disband its donations? I just donated $100 to my local Japanese Cultural Centre to help with the relief effort! Did I just throw my money away?
-
Yes, but remember that it means they are venting off heat–helping to keep things cooler, if that helps.
-
Yes, Just how long does it take to cool down this nuclear fuel cells anyway?
-
I don't really know, sorry. But they do have an endless supply of sea water to renew the cooling efforts–that's a good thing, right?
-
As a last resort yes. But ideally they need to use plain water free of other minerals to avoid shutting down the nuclear plant completely. Reports say those things cost billions, not to mention the dire need to replenish the country's energy supply.
-
**@ Renegade-**My understanding is that they have no plans to put this plant back online.
@Kaba:

No, the Red Cross will always have a reserve of money with which to help, as far as I know. I'm sure in some areas where graft and corruption are more common, things like disappearing funds are common, but I seriously doubt that this will be the case in Japan.
-
I'm just confused, that's all. I thought that the current donations are really going to be used to help rebuild Japan but now with talks about possible "disappearing" donations by shady groups, I'm not so sure.
Help a friend?
-
@ ISTBC (I survived the buster call…phew... Madame, your username is too long. XD) Then they have a big shot at successfully cooling down this nuclear plant.
As for the redcross issue. Donations are not completely used in one setting. They are not given as one huge bulk but instead in strategic doses. Donations given now could pile up and be saved up for later use.
-
I imagine the plant with the faulty reactor is done for for good. That's what happened with Three Mile Island; the afflicted plant was shut down for good, while the other one is still in service today.
-
It's complicated sometimes Kaba kaba, but for you the simple answer is that in all probability the money you donated will get to the people it is intended to help in some form or another. Does that help? There are always shady groups trying to take advantage and get money they have no right to. Please don't let those sorts of fears interfere with your instinct to try and help.
-
Okay, so do we have an official confirmation from multiple independent sources that an adequate amount has been raised to help the Japanese people for the time being?
-
Well, they don't have endless supply of sea water to cool the fuel rods with, because you can't pump the "used" (now radioactive) sea water back where you took it from.
Or is there some sort of plan where to "store" the water? -
Renegade, people often call me Buster Call, among other things. That's fine with me–or the initials are good too, lol.
@Kaba:
Okay, so do we have an official confirmation from multiple independent sources that an adequate amount has been raised to help the Japanese people for the time being?
No, of course not–because noone knows at this time exactly how much will be needed and the crisis is still ongoing. That post that confused you was rather cynical, so my advice is to just disregard it.
