I wanna see an alternte universe where Cameron made Alita instead of Avatar.
I just wonder how that universe looks like.

Get ready for Avatar 2-5 to just take even more things from Alita instead of making an Alita adaptation, I mean didnt ppl mention the ships in avatar 1 looked similiar to alita designs or something like that?
Avatar is a film you went and saw because of the buzz. If it's not a -must see- movie then people aren't gonna go see it because tix are goddamn expensive these days. I know you wanna believe that the old gen and a new gen are gonna dig avatar 2 but honestly why would they go see it when there's marvel and Star Wars and all these other films around. The fact of the matter is the characters aren't strong enough to pull for a sequel, special effects will have changed by the time the sequel comes out so its likely the characters will look different, and the hook of 'look at this pretty world' isn't as strong as something like JJ Abram's mystery box
Predicting now: that it does well first weekend but drops the second weekend and doesn't make the numbers the first one made
Except that Avatar 1's story was absolutely boring trite that no one praised…at all. So I don't know why anyone would expect anything otherwise from Avatar 2 aside from "oooh stunning visuals" (which you now expect from any high budget movie in the past for years so who cares if Avatar "looks pretty" in 3D.)
Also, Avatar is not a film anyone holds any nostalgia for.
Late reply I know, but some of these statements can be applied to Jurassic Park back in 93. The special effects (plus people's obsessions with Dinosaurs) made it a phenomenon, it wasn't the story by any means.
And like I alluded to earlier, people aren't gonna skip Avatar 2 just because they have Star Wars and Marvel. People can still watch multiple movies y'know. Going by that logic, most films would not get a billion dollars anymore. Not to mention that Avatar was still a theatrical phenemonen that drew people of all segments to the theater in a way that hadn't been seen since Titanic.
Unlike Marvel, Jurassic Park, or Star Wars where people focus not only on the visuals but actually a decent storyline with entertaining characters and lines, the only discussion on Avatar at this point is that there are sequels
Going by that logic, most films would not get a billion dollars anymore.
…most films don't make a billion dollars. Even with five films doing that last year, and Civil War and Zootopia poised to do it, there's still only about 20 films in the billionaire club, almost entirely sequels. (And Zootopia is probably going to stop just short, around 960)
People were nostlagic for Jurassic Park. No one is nostalgic for Avatar, it's too new and no one remembered it after. It's made zero impact on pop culture. It was the "movie with the new 3D technology" and that's what pushed it to its high mark, NOT the movie itself.
Memorable things that people will look back on Avatar about:
I rather see him try and make Battle Angel Alita instead.^^
plot twist:
What if he makes a movie that's clearly a take on Gunmm and calls it Avatar?

Of course Jurassic Park had a bigger impact pop-culture wise;
But Jurasssic Park's legitimization of CGI is it's biggest contribution by far, the same way Avatar's pushing of 3-D glasses as a standard is it's biggest contribution.
And I think you underestimate the amount of people that did enjoy Avatar. The movie wasn't that great on its own, but for the large majority of people it was an incredible theater experience.
Since when is 3D a standard now?
I mean yes, movies use it, but not nearly to the extent Avatar was designed to do. Unless you mean to say "upscales" to 3D are Avatar's biggest contribution in the same way that Avatar legitimized easy cash grabs.
Hopefully Avatar's biggest contribution is to make people more cautious next time a situation like that happens

Except…Jurassic Park isn't predominantly valued strictly for it's CGI but other things. Whereas Avatar ONLY has the 3D gimmick and video game visuals going for it and now it's absolutely nothing special to look at (which makes it pretty much a pretty uninteresting movie to rewatch).
And I am going to presume the same "people" that enjoyed watching Avatar also were the same suckers that enjoyed Phantom Menace when it came out and called that an "incredible theater experience". If anything, I found Snakes on a Plane a more "incredible theater experience"
And heck, if the movie isn't "great on its own" then why invite the comparison to Jurassic Park? You know...the movie that will stand out and HAS stood out since the 90s whereas Avatar is (if not already) an outdated piece of borefest cinema with absolutely nothing going for it?
To be fair, Avatar's action scenes were very well done. Cameron knows how to frame a shot and get you to really know the action going on… no shaky cam nonsense.
Of course, there was no investment in the flat characters and the action sequence at the end went for a really long time, so eventually the action became boring, but...
As long as Avatar 2 doesn't get negative reviews, thos people will be back for the sequel. Look at the Transformers films, and how the story and characterization has been heavily panned, yet they still make billions.
Given Cameron's track record, I doubt Avatar 2 will be bad, especially given that that was its biggest criticism, and how he's stated several times that he's been working with numerous people with the story.

The marked difference being half the criticism of Transformers comes from the fact it's an adaptation of a beloved (and notoriously divisive property). Avatar doesn't have that going for it.
I wish that asshole never had the rights to Gunnm in the first place.
Man, doing a search must have been hard for a thread with a stupid ass title.
Probably not, the real name is intact with a lot of the posts, it was changed later by a mod being mischievous….
They're going to have to preserve Cameron's brain in a jar at this rate if they want to have all 4 movies made.
Man, doing a search must have been hard for a thread with a stupid ass title.
That's why you search by posts instead; all you have to do is remember what you wrote in a thread and search for those keywords.
Anyone have any hopes or expectations for this?
I mean I ENJOYED the first one, but is this a franchise?
Literally the first Avengers film, and the last of it's main saga have concluded in this period.
Visually, Avatar is amazing. But it's plot was Pocahontas. With Weaver.
Is it sad I'd excpeted this to be complely abandoned by this point? Or are we just going forward hoping Cameron pulls it off.
I mean damn, at least give James Cameron a personal experience to validate this. "I really wanted to get into the mindset of people off Earth, so Elon and I have gone to Mars to get into the mindset for this".
But if there is little-to-no real innovation with this cinematiclly, I'll be pretty let down.
Man i remember people killing themselves over how they could never live on whatever the avatar planet was called. All over a shitty pocahontas in space flick.
I wouldn't call it shitty, just aggressively middle-of-the-road. Perfectly functional, not too memorable. Aside from the main character being impossibly bland (and the whole White Savior thing), my biggest issue with the movie was always that it wasn't exotic enough; By the time I saw it I'd been exposed to +20 years worth of genre fiction adn video games, so the creature designs and world of Avatar - its main draws, for many - simply didn't wow me. Like, If it was more of a visual trip I probably wouldn't have compared it to Ferngully.
All i know is i doozed off for like 15 minutes in the middle of this snooze fest. Also unobtanium is probably the worst name for a macguffin in movie history.

I've never seen the movie, but really? This is the name they gave a magical substance or something?
Apparently its an actual term used in engineering, fiction and thought experiments So they didn't come up with it, and I can see how you'd name the most valuable mineral, and key to space travel, after the slang term for "ultimate fantasy mineral". But yeah, it sounds pretty goofy.

You'd think that a decade would've dulled my feelings about it but it still makes me want to shout you lazy hacks at the screen. Maybe the next one will be about almostgotitum.

Or maybe motivatium
Or hardtogettium
Or wewantthatium
Or maybe it'll be a person named Mr. MacGuffin
If we can't get mr macguffin to the plot point forest all is lost.

Yeah, it has its basis in the real world. But when its SO DUMB SOUNDING that you have to explain that every time it comes up…. maybe just maybe give it a different less goofy name?
Like, Californium and Einsteinium and Lawrencium and Tennessine are real elements on the table, but I'd never go to them as names that have to be repeated and taken seriously. At least move it up one notch on the table to Gadolium or Dysprosium or something that sound like real science words instead of a fanfic element.
Instead of unobtainium, keep the inside joke but change it to "Unium", "Unobtine" "Tainium", "Untainium" or "Unobsten" or "Periodic element 2-4-6-0-1" would have gone over better instead of being a riddling point for a decade of bad writing..
"Scientists named it Tainium... because it's unobtainable" or "element 1563... nicknamed unobtainium" takes exactly as long to say without seeming silly. You can use the inside gag without it being the dumb official name.
When Avatar recently is still looked breathtaking. And I'm excited about this one, those concepts looks great.
He could've made this immediately after the first one. But no, he look his time. He's in no hurry. The only thing is that the release dates were pushed forward due Star Wars, and a new Avatar film will be coming out every other year (with Star Wars occupying the in between years). Dunno if Cameron wanted this.
Visually, Avatar is amazing. But it's plot was Pocahontas. With Weaver.
I like Pocahontas plot. And Weaver.
Pandorium would suffice.

This is my thing. I didn't hate it, didn't love it. Best thing in it was Sigourney Weaver. And I can easily say I had a better 3D experience in Coraline.
Not that I can see 3D anymore anyway because it gives me seizures, but whatever.
I don't miss the everything should be pointlessly 3D craze one bit.
Nor the price bump to pay for those illfitting glasses.

Wait is that phase finally over? I still had to watch every recent Marvel movie in 3d, because that was the only available option.

It's not as big as it was ten years ago, but yeah, I'm pretty sure a lot of theaters still offer 3D showings.
What has passed is that thing where every film had to have one pointless scene where something flies at the screen to justify the extra expense. Now it is just what it always should have been, an optional novelty

Because they all invested the money to get the 3D projectors, they're not just going to throw that away. They wanna make their money back… and charge people a few extra bucks per ticket.
lol, when it came out, I had loved it. Haven't watched it since I was 12, lol
All i know is i doozed off for like 15 minutes in the middle of this snooze fest. Also unobtanium is probably the worst name for a macguffin in movie history.
Seriously, so stupid
Hell even just calling it the macguffin would have been infinitely better
My only real gripe is that it felt like Cameron was unsure whether he wanted to make a movie for adults or for kids, and then ended up never coming to a decision at all and it really shows.
It needed Robin Williams and Tim Curry.
!
Man, I love that movie so much, but each time I watch it the lyrics are just a bit worse. "Looks like an animal, but, I'm a mammal!"
Mammals are animals Batty. Damn.
Ferngully is a thousand times better than Avatar or any of it’s sequels will be
It's been like a decade and still with the Ferngully jokes? Really? What next, Pocahontas references?

Not before Dances with Wolves. And Smurfs.
Hey, it's not like Cameron would just outright steal ideas from a lesser known science fiction sto- oh.
If you loved it then great for you. We all have movies we love even if the general public doesn't. All I can say is Titanic was a better James Cameron movie, and I wasn't even one of the girls in my class obsessed with it.
