So, we've learned he has two (surprisingly normal-looking) sisters who are most likely dead, was an orphan when he joined the Whitebeard Pirates, and he has never slept. Ever. And was born when the Rocks Pirates formed.

Now we got our answers.
Yeah, and it was a lazy solution that made Rayleigh's line inconsistent. Like they had a translator, his line about the voice of all things although true seems empty when he leaves out: the fucking interpreter that validated the voices Roger heard. We also now know that the stones absolutely have voices. It is nothing extremely bad. Just weak story telling.
A more interesting solution would have been that Oden using the voice of all things something we knew he had, and both Roger and him interpreted the language.
I can only speak for myself, but I speak three languages and I don't think that I'll ever forget how to.
And I know a bunch of people that took languages in school and do not remember it enough to speak, or read/write, much less teach.
-
I don't consider the sisters canon. They didn't appear in the manga.
Getting a kid and building the most awesome pirate crew there is, doesn't fit either. Xebec was D though
-
Regarding whether or not Blackbeard can read poneglyphs, and the information recently learned about him, I've come to think that it's more and more likely that Teach actually isn't human. And with this most current flashback, I've also realized. Have we ever seen the guy without some kind of hat on?
Y'all. What if Blackbeard himself is a three-eyes? Did we ever see Pudding sleep?
-
Hmmā¦
-
Don't know why people bring this upā¦ It's just Luffy who once heard "Never fall asleep when you are (out) in the cold!" and now he is generalizing it for comical reasons. The only connection is that Blackbeard was on Drum shortly before.
-

I mean, he also said that he heard it from "some guy in a bar", so it's likely that he heard it from Shanks, who knew that about Blackbeard. If youre wondering why he wouldn't name Shanks: at the time he didn't know Shanks was a very famous pirate, so he had no reason to say "Shanks" to Sanji. Luffy might have generalised it to 'people from snow countries don't sleep' from his childhood imaginary.
And yea as you point out, Blackbeard was introduced the same arc that Luffy said that line. It's just impressive to think how 800 chapters before we found out, Oda very likely already had planned this out. While I'd be hesitant to call it 'foreshadowing' (unless you're a Japanese reader or someone who's been around long enough to also have seen Ace's ambiguous line about BB having lived "twice the life"), it's just impressive that the connection was there way back then.

The island Teach was picked up didn't looked very snowy. So Blackbeard was just looking for someone in Drum who was like him?

I couldnāt sleep and had this idea about Blackbeardās history and the nature/origin of Devil Fruits. It is late in the night but I want to share this idea in case I forget some details and as I said ā I canāt sleep anyway.
I will say it outright and try to justify thereafter:
Blackbeard ā until he ate the Yami Yami no Mi ā was himself a possible āblankā Devil Fruit. Not only one, but two of them. One general notion about Devil Fruits before I begin: they have to be āmanā-made āthingsā, because of stuff like the Mochi Mochi no Mi, etc., stuff that just doesnāt exist in nature. This is a fundamental condition of my theory. The scientist with the most knowledge about Devil Fruits is Vegapunk and we will first take a look at his famous inventions concerning them:
I think his research follows a certain pattern. First he finds out how to transfer one specific power of a yet not eaten Devil Fruit to inanimate objects (āfeedingā Devil Fruits to objects, e.g. Spandamās sword). Next he finds out, how to transfer the power not of one Fruit but of the User who ate one into several (unlimited) objects (Kizaruās beams into Pacifista). Next step is that he starts to make artificial Devil Fruits by using his knowledge of the Lineage Factor. Here comes my first assumption into play: if there are Devil Fruits like the Mochi Mochi no Mi, someone had to first transfer the properties of mochi into a āblankā Devil Fruit. We know that the process is possible in opposite direction. So why not āfeedā mochi to a Devil Fruit? I think this is where Vegapunk began to struggle and started to think about the concept of āblankā Devil Fruits. It seems you can create a Zoan Devil Fruit (maybe using SAD like Ceasar) if you take an animal and somehow uses its Lineage Factor. But it will be corrupted. On the other hand, when you already have a Devil Fruit it is impossible to transfer other properties into it. Maybe Vegapunk first tried to transfer the properties of inanimate objects into yet existing Devil Fruits but could only accomplish the opposite. So thatās where we need āblankā Devil Fruits.
Now there is Teach. The only known man who ate two Devil Fruits. We know it has to do with his āstrange bodyā, we know that he has ātwo timesā whatever, now we learned, that he doesnāt sleep and we have Odaās sketch with his two little sisters and a shocked Ace. We also know that his main interest is history.
Now my theory that is highly speculative from here on: to create a āblankā Devil Fruit and to āfeedā it with whatever you want and thus create Logia, Paramecia and Zoan Devil Fruits, you need a human being with exceptional qualities. Blackbeard and his sisters were such humans. He had to witness how someone, something or somehow his sister transformed into a āblankā Devil Fruit and then by absorbing the properties of something different became a completely new Devil Fruit. Before the same would happen to his other sister and while she was in the āblankā-Devil-Fruit-state he ate her. He was now a double-souled person, could not sleep anymore ā or didnāt want to sleep because something bad would happen. He started to study history in order to save his sisters and to learn more about this specific qualities that someone needs to become such a āblankā Devil Fruit. This whole story he told his crew mates, hence the shocked Ace and Marcos comment. He found out that there is only one way to get rid of the state he was in: The Yami Yami no Mi. Itās properties would allow him to neglect one soul in his body and still allow him to eat another one.
Itās just a late night theory, and there are many open questions: why wasnāt Momoās fruit corrupted, why canāt there be more than one fruit of the same type at the same time, why do we need a āblankā Devil Fruit if the powers can respawn in any given fruit and why didnāt Teach just ask and explain the situation he was in. As I said itās just an idea, would like to hear your thoughts on it.

I mean, he could have been at another island before the one he was picked up on, no?
-
Also Imus frozen rooms come to mindā¦
-
There's also this interesting idea going around that Blackbeard has two souls inside of him, explaining why he's able to have two fruits (one for each soul) and also possibly have two different personalities, as he can seem comedically dumb one minute and a clever schemer the next minute. It could also explain why Buggy said he was a monster who never sleeps, as if the souls take turns on being awake.
-
Young Blackbeard in the panel next to Buggy and Shanks looks like Hody Jones.
-
In the new SBS Oda let us know that the Red Spider Lily is the flower which corresponds with Blackbeard. According to Wikipedia they are a symbol of the fall, death and reincarnation.
-
One general notion about Devil Fruits before I begin: they have to be āmanā-made āthingsā
Most likely created by the people of the Great Kingdom.
Since the Tenryuubito are "Gods" and their enemy was the Great Kingdom you could consider them as "Devils".
That's why they are called Devil Fruits and not only because they give you "devil like" powers.
Not facts, just my opinion/theory. -
It could also explain why Buggy said he was a monster who never sleeps, as if the souls take turns on being awake.
Might be a parallel to Nekomamushi and Inuarashi's own arrangement on Zou; one rules during the day, the other at night.

So a connection to Rocks?

I hope not. Yuyu Hakusho did that well enough with Sensui. Not different souls but split personality. Butā¦if he does get a third DF then maybe he took his two sisters' souls, but how would he do that?

Not to mention that Oda already did something similar with Cavendish.
-
i too was thinking teach might have a twin of some sort inside him. the evidence is starting to add up bit by bit.
-
Blackbeard is a mini Oars and Rocks is steering him from the inside.
-
Let's sum up:
- Teach never sleeps, making him "lives twice an average person's life length"
- Teach has a strange body, capable of contain (at least) two devil fruits' ability
- About this, he knows a secret way to extrapolate abilities by corpses
- He has a serious obsession with man's dreams, as a recurring subject of his speaking
- He went seeking for Yami Yami Fruit for years and it's the reason he joined WBPs when he was an orphan and why he killed Thatch
- His route was covering at least Drum, Jaya and Banaro but we don't know if he was following a Log Pose's route or there was other reasons
- He is basically the antithesis of Luffy in food preferences
- He made out a huge plain to get into Impel Down and set free a number of really powerful old pirates
- He set his hideout in Rocks' former island
-
- He has a serious obsession with man's dreams, as a recurring subject of his speaking
Dreams, in the literal sense of the word, are something he can't have since he never sleeps, which is why they're so important to him.
-
random and bold statement: BB thinks he is dreaming. and since you cant die in your dreamsā¦
(donāt take it serious pls, just a funny thought i always had )
-
Given Blackbeard shares the 3-skull motif with Oars, I wonder if the latter's manner of death somehow ties into the whole sleep=death myth(?), further hinting at a possible connection ?
-
Also, I always thought that BB managed to steal Whitebeard's DF by the ability of the Yami-Yami no mi, as it as the power to absord DF powers. That is at least how I understood it.
-
Maybe one of his sisters had the inferior class version of bm's fruit and tranfered her and her sis to BB.
-

That would've made so much more sense than what we got. As CC showed us you apparently just put a banana next to a DF user and kill him to collect the power. Talk about undermining Blackbeards quest for the darkness fruit

Then what was the need to cover up the process back at MF? As I remembered, DF are reborned randomly across the planet. If the theory of closest banana is correct it would mean that the DF will get reborned in the closest tree to the dead user's body, makes no sense. I don't know where CC showd us that, was it only in the anime?

It was in the manga after Smiley exploded.
-
Wasn't Burguess also running with a bag of fruits?
-
@Medical:
It was in the manga after Smiley exploded.
Yup, seems the DF is reborned only into a similar fruit as it was before. Probably BB covered himself so the others won't see how he manages to have 2 fruits at the same time. Only plausible explanation.
-
You know, I would love if Oda seriously incorporated that SBS question where he said Newgate's mustache had a zipper and he kept bananas inside of it. He could say the bananas where there to respawn the Gura Gura fruit in case he died so his sons would know where to find it. It backfired since Teach was a former WBP so he knew about it.
-
It doesn't have to be one thing or the other, nothing is undermined yet.
The fruit method requires knowledge about the devil fruit and its base, which is already a huge hurdle because the Devil Fruit encyclopedia only lists a few fruits with a picture:
@Oda:
Well, I think I'll eventually get to explaining more about Devil Fruits in the main story, but you see, there's a book of Devil Fruits. It has info about all kinds of fruit names and abilities, but few of the fruit can actually be identified by their shape.
And even if you know the base fruit, in practice it's just such an act to bring the right fruit in perfect condition to the right place at the right time. Caesar did a controlled experiment, in a controlled environment, with a rather simple base fruit. He made it look easy, but what if the base fruit is rare or hard to get in general (only grows on a certain island or goes bad quickly)? It's such a hassle.
That said, the Darkness Fruit has to be the reason why Blackbeard can extract the powers so reliably, else Devil Fruit hunting would be more of a thing and not just something Blackbeard is known for (and people like Law would have a bounty appropriate to the price of their fruit, I guess).
-
But Blackbeard first recognized the fruit Thatch was holding exactly because he memorized its shape.
If he knew what kind of fruit it was, bringing some matching normal fruit isn't such a stretched out possibility. BB's own crew wasn't sure if it would work. The guy does plan things, but not to last detail, leaving bunch of things to fate, as he likes to call it.
EDIT: Ugh, yeah, writing during work, with little sleep. Not even sure how i switched the fruits, lol.
Anyway, the same point still stands, albeit less convincingly :ninja:

The Darkness fruit was one of the few in the DF encyclopedia with a picture, so it's possible that Blackbeard, who obsessively planned to get this exact fruit, also had a matching base fruit with him (or organized one after he witnessed Thatch consuming it). So yeah, he either stole it from Thatch before he consumed it or he used the fruit-spawn method due to knowing a lot about the Darkness fruit.
However, my argument is that you can't apply the "fruit-spawn method" if you don't know the necessary details about the fruit you're after (and according to Oda, the DF book mostly lists the name of the fruits and the powers you would gain from them, no pictures). It's simply not a viable option if you want to go on a mass devil fruit hunt, it can't be the reason why Blackbeard can steal whatever he wants whenever he wants. There's simply not enough information about Devil Fruits documented to do that.
Just an example for the sake of the argument, don't mind the details:
Let's say you would want to hunt Enel's lightning logia because it's super broken and good. You don't know how it looks like, you don't know what the base fruit it spawns into looks like. What do you do after killing Enel? Which fruit do you bring along to have it respawn next to you? Do you just bring as many different fruits as you can and pray? That could work. But what if the lightning logia usually spawns into a fruit you don't have access to, maybe a fruit you never heard of? Like the coconuts from Skypiea, a place that's a myth for most?
It's just way too random and inconvenient. Not when the alternative theory involves the darkness fruit with the unique power to suck in other Devil Fruit powers. Or is this a case of something being too obviousā¦?
-

Chapter 786 Burguess wanted to kill Luffy and steal his fruit and that was a chance encounter. And he is going straight for the head before Sabo interrupt. So it seems they have a technique that doesn't require Blackbeard around or crazy prep.

You assume that the fruit always instantly leaves the moment of death, but it doesn't. Whitebeard stood there for quite some time without the fruit respawning instantly.
Smiley's fruit respawned the moment of death, but he also didn't just die - he completely evaporated on the spot.
It's possible that the transition period varies depending on how much damage the body sustained, means Burgess would have had enough time to bring Luffy's dead body to Blackbeard in time.
-
I was so disapointed when i realized Oda threw away such a great aspect of what could've made the darkness fruit truly incredible by making the DF stealing an anyone can do it thing. What a lost opportunity that was.
-
I still think there is a difference between stealing a devil fruit from someone by just killing them and giving it to someone without a power and what Blackbeard did in acquiring a 2nd devil fruit power.
Having 2 fruit powers is supposed to be impossible and I think it is something related to Blackbeard's first fruit power and/or the way fruits work.
For example, if fruits are somehow tied to/associated with a certain organ like the brain or heart and by using the black hole type power where he can absorb things he can somehow absorb Whitebeard's heart and access that power as well.
Anyway, I think there might be more aspects to the Darkness fruit than we know. That is why Blackbeard was so hell-bent on acquiring that fruit from the start. If it allows its user to have access to 2 or more fruit powers it's no wonder he killed Thatch, stole the fruit, and risked the entire wrath of Whitebeard's crew.

It was implied by both Marco and the most recent databook to have something to do with Teach's unusual anatomy, not some special property of the yami yami.

No.

BB isn't a real D as it was said by WB, and it is said that he was found as an orphelin that they don't know from where he comes
WB never said he wasn't a real "D", he simply said BB isn't the one Roger is waiting for, which makes all the more sense now since Oden's flashback which Roger/Oden heard the Sea Kings say, that
they were awaiting the King to be born in a faraway sea.Roger told WB everything, hence when Ace turned up, he was grooming him to be the person that would fulfill that prophecy, except its not Ace but Luffy.
-
Roger told WB everything, hence when Ace turned up, he was grooming him to be the person that would fulfill that prophecy, except its not Ace but Luffy.
I continue to hate this idea with passion and choose to think it was just a way for Akainu/Sengoku to play on Squardo's hatred of Roger.

I apologize if this has been mentioned, but I was reading up on Xebec ships and many of them had three masts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xebec
Blackbeard is associated a lot with the number three. Maybe it's a coincidence and Oda just gave Rocks D. Xebec the name to sound cool or maybe it's something to tie him in with Blackbeard.
Also, Xebecs were used mainly by the Barbary pirates and corsairs who captured a bunch of slaves, so maybe that ties in with the God Valley incident?
