Well, on top of the heartbreak of losing Oden, she was starved for days, antagonized by Kaido, and had death surrounding her whenever someone was nice to her, that's probably a little more than the flashbacks Zoro and Usopp got for example.

You have a point. Even if Yamato was only shown in one panel in those flashbacks, Oda has presented those flashbacks as being centrally relevant to Yamato's story - without those flashbacks Yamato's character would not make sense. Sure those flashbacks served mainly to set-up the Akazaya's Samurai's retribution against the Beast Pirates but Oden's flashbacks also largely played a part in establishing Yamato's character. Readers have to read Oden's flashbacks in order to understand who Yamato is. Those flashbacks were significant to both the Samurai (including Momonosuke and Hiyori) and Yamato. So when one considers the motivations derived from past events for Yamato, Oden's flashbacks should also be considered as part of Yamato's story.
As for a mentor. I don't know but isn't Kaido in a sense Yamato's mentor? Not the conventional kind but Kaido has made efforts to "teach" and "guide" Yamato. Whether the motivations of Kaido were self-serving and inhumane, he still operated as a parent in wanting to teach their child what he believes in the manner he believed was appropriate. Kaido has told Yamato that he intends to kill him but that's not completely true. The manner in how Kaido has gone about attacking Yamato aligns more with breaking Yamato down physically, mentally and spiritually to make Yamato more ceded to his line of thinking. Kaido attacked Yamato with force behind it but his ultimate goal isn't to kill Yamato but to turn him. I also believe that the reason Kaido didn't kill Momonosuke in the past when he had Momonosuke by the neck is because of Yamato. Momonosuke reminded Kaido of Yamato and progressing through the act of breaking Momonosuke's neck left a chilling imagery within Kaido's mind which is why he left Momonosuke within the burning Kuri Castle.

The conflict between the two is the result of their ideologies lying on opposite extremes. Yamato's utilization of a kanabō and attacks similar to Kaido's such as Raimei Hakke does though suggests application by Yamato for what he has learned from Kaido. In some capacity, Yamato has been taught by Kaido.

Oda's efforts of expanding Yamato's story continuously goes against the belief that Yamato's role within the story will be minimized with the conclusion of the Wano Kuni Arc.
I'll bet at the last second, Yamato will be proud of her dad's way of life (and death). Kaido sucks but at least he built Yamato into a badass fighter as she is now.

It could be a somewhat similar situation to Sanji having Judge and Zeff, or Ace having Roger and Whitebeard. Yamato has Kaido as the mentor he was born with and Oden as the mentor he wants… the big difference in Yamato being that he couldn't get away from Kaido, the way Sanji and Ace could get away from Judge and Roger respectively.
The fact that Kaido clearly values Yamato is why I think we'll learn more about both; Kaido wants to die, and Yamato is the one who will be left behind when he does. Kaido must have some hopes or expectations for Yamato.
Like I have said to one of you elsewhere. In my first post in Arlong park I have stated a truth. I won't take that back. There is no direspect in saying that someone is reaching to the storyline when it is the case.
I have facts and details evidences that people are REACHING when talking about Yamato. This is not an insult, nor a disrespect, it is a fact. People are jumping OVER the storyline in order to fil a confirmation bias. This is what I call "reaching". Yes EVEN when there is a long argument behind it.

Now that's said. I'm open to the discussion. My post was a mirror reply to another post. I don't intend to be this provocative all of the time, but don't do that the other way, or will reply.
My thread, as stated, are mostly based on my knowledge of storytelling, may I be wrong on the future plot points of the story, I won't be on the analysis of the current one, and I will be strong about it. Like I said I have reasons to believe that Yamato is overHyped. There are obvious reasons for this love - that I can totally understand - but most of those reasons are bias nonetheless.
Being a Carrot fan does not make me oblivious to the story, on the contrary, it has made me concentrate my efforts of analysis on the construction of a single character for years ! That's why I ask you not to blow off an argumentation because of a pseudonym, those pseudonym might be the very reason why there is a strong point being made.
No more explanation are needed. If you have questions about the reasons why I think Yamato is overhype, ask me or don't, you do you.
A thread will be coming on reddit detailing the precise reasons why Yamato should not be looked - FOR NOW - as a future crewmate, I might post some of those here.

I have no issue with readers arguing for Carrot. If I don't have anything valuable to add, I stay out of the discussion and focus on other aspects I wish to talk about. Rather, I like to be exposed to aspects of the story I never noticed before. For example, I never knew about connection between Zou (Zunesha) and the shadows within the Florian Triangle until it was pointed out in the "Unresolved Plot Threads" thread in these forums. I also didn't pick up on the kokeshi dolls theory until reading it in this thread (though I still don't believe Hitetsu is Sukiyaki). Such revelations are incredibly fascinating. We are all individuals here and no one person (save Oda himself) can truly understand what One Piece is about. This is why discussion is helpful and fun.
This whole "Yamato is a nice character, but is just a hype gone too far and it's time for everyone to understand it" is such a destructive attempt to warp something positive. Is it wrong for readers to believe something even if it may be wrong?
It's fine if you consider other's arguments for Yamato as reaching but please don't turn this into a recipe for division.

Arguments for Yamato joining aren't necessarily primarily sourced from "wanting" Yamato to join but also inclusive of how One Piece as a story can develop. The larger story is being looked at and potential is being argued.
Also, a lot of members on these forums who support Yamato will be fine if Yamato doesn't join. Our identity isn't wrapped up within such an expectation. But that is my belief on how I see things. Since I can only speak for myself, I will be fine.
I have already gone through such a journey with Monet. And no toxicity/negativity resulted. If you know about how much I have written about Yamato's potential, then you know that I have written a lot but Monet is a character I have written more about. If you want someone to blame for the influx of Monet theories in 2015, you can probably blame me (theory - I was wrong about a lot of things but being wrong is part of the fun). I just didn't use ArlongPark forums as the channel for my expressions. Primarily because at the time, I didn't feel comfortable sharing such thoughts and arguments within these forums (fear of being mocked/ridiculed). But these forums aren't as I feared. Members are willing to listen and provide points of rebuttal. Whether the result is bitter or sweet is inconsequential. Respect is shown.

Believe me, keeping out toxicity is one of our goals here. The key thing is, all our discussions have to be kept civil and focused on the story, not on fighting past hurts and perceived injustice. Syphin's right in that we're not in a battle here; the forum is meant to be fun and pleasant. What I hope is that you can enjoy being here even after Wano is over, but however long you're here, please stick to the issue without blaming.

Yeah, discussion here can get heated sometimes but frankly the largest problem i had the last time there was a Carrot debate wasn't that people were arguing for or against her, it was that the discussion had entered a loop where the same arguments kept being made over and over with nothing new brought to the table (which isn't strange at all considering we weren't getting any information about Carrot from the manga).
Personally I love Yamato and I love Carrot. They're some of my favourite characters to come out of the time skip. Right now I think Yamato has a decent chance to join while Carrot isn't looking too good, but if it turns out Carrot joins and Yamato doesn't I'd still be over the moon to see one of my favourite characters hang out with the Strawhats. And hell, maybe both join. Or none of them. For all we know Oda could pull some insane Robin-style twist and give us someone completely different (while unlikely I'd be way more excited for someone like Drake than the other two).

What I like about CarrotForNakama's posts on Twitter and elsewhere is that they have been based on evidence from the manga, with logic and reasoning that I've personally connected with. What I see as evidence someone else may not, but the majority of arguments for the majority of characters come from a place of true belief in them.
The key is that we have to respect each other's opinions and be amicable in our disagreements, accepting the reality that most are going to be adamant and not change their minds until the arc is over, if ever. That goes for Carrot supporters and Yamato supporters alike.

To reply to your question, no it's not wrong to believe a wrong statement toward the story, if this belief system does not harm ones enjoyment of said story. Sadly, I've come to experience how hurtfull "illegitimate expectations" (expectations based on no setup on the story) created by biased sources and "theorists" could be. And we have LARGELY passed the threshold of expectations with the Yamato Hype.
When I say that it's time for people to understand that Yamato is a hype, I do not intend for people to stop believing in YamatoForNakama, I want people to be reminded the sources of those expectations in order to lessen the potential of disapointment toward the story if said expectations are not fullfilled by the end of the road.

Like going into this ready for war and threats of war (lol) is never going to lead to a real discussion. Hell waifu wars is why the video game company Bioware had to shut down their own forums a few years ago. Because these types of fans and the way they talk are the most toxic part of any fandom. It reeks of insecurity too.

It's a fascinating thing though, what may appear to be logical to one person could be very illogical to the other. It's an interesting insight in how we all perceive One Piece differently. And to the series credit Oda is the kind of guy who can take a "maybe" and make it true. It's one of the reasons I generally disregard any rules for joining like the presence of tragic flashbacks or a clear stated dream. Those elements certainly strengthen the chances, but as seen with Robin joining they can be bent and Oda can always do something completely new to shake things up. That said I do agree with you, and I think one of the difficulties is when people end up arguing from different standpoints - you can get some really well done arguments but at their core they're arguing very different things. But I don't think that can really be avoided either. Like Shift said, in the end it comes down to respecting each other.

That was the one part of Oden's flashback I really enjoyed, seeing this monster of a person act like a kid at all the new things, I really hope Yamato will be the same way. Might bring back some of that adventure feeling.

This is one of the things I really hope we get to see. For the most part, Luffy is the one pushing the rest of the crew to do crazy stuff, but Yamato has a similarly unfettered desire for adventure, so it could be fun to see them playing off of each other. I also feel like Luffy has been pretty focused on taking down the Yonko for the past several hundred chapters, and he hasn't really been doing things just for the sake of it since Punk Hazard (let's go to Dressrosa to destroy the factory, we have to go to Zou to meet the crew, we have to go save Sanji, we have to beat Kaido). This could be the new norm now that becoming Pirate King is within sight, so Yamato could pick up some of the I-just-want-to-do-fun-stuff slack.
I'm all in on this war, but I'm team Gaimon. It's not too late for him to join the crew, is it?
Well, Luffy still has to go back to the East Blue as a Pirate King to pay his treasure tab to Makino.

To be honest, I had concerns when Yamato went with Momo but that's more of what meaning you attribute to that(subjective); what only matters is Oda's intent and he had Yamato say twice that he wants to sail with Luffy.

Helmeppo was such a big trauma for Zoro that he even repressed his painful memories of the dude and had completely forgotten everything about him a few weeks later when they met again in Water 7. Probably Zoro's greatest trauma ever.
