This Yamato scene is kinda corny
I find Yamato extremely annoying and forced. I don't really see why so much of the fanbase likes Yamato.
That aside, I still think Yamato or Carrot or both might join.

He only reacts like that because Luffy goes "CAN YOU DO IT?!". Yamato was busy fighting Ulti at the time, so Luffy gave him a new priority (even Yamato goes "huh?", so Momo was not something in his mind at the time).
I guess I'm just missing the significance. Luffy tells him to help Shinobu protect Momo. Even if he didn't, I have a hard time believing Yamato would sit idly by and watch Momo get attacked. That goes for all of the allies (except for Kid who wouldn't give a shit lol).

Brook was annoying at first too, but then he grew on me, and I used to feel Jinbei was bland but now I like him
So I'd say give it some time, especially after he joins and integrates with the crew (if that's where it's going)
I'm just hoping next arc we drop all the companions and give the Straw Hats some time to really shine, there the best characters Oda has and it feels like they've taken a back seat and had less time to shine
unfortunately I'm almost positive that Law will be tagging along, and Luffy offered Caribou a ride so there's that, then I wouldn't be surprised if Oda wanted to give Kidd and Killer more time to shine being Luffy and Zoro's big rivals, and seeing as how popular Marco is he might tag along….. and oh god I really hope I'm wrong here, I just want the Straw Hats that's all!
I don't know if I like Yamato or not. I think that's Oda's intention tho. He hasn't come into himself yet. Once he gets his priorities straight and finds his resolve, then I judge that more developed version. As of now, he's all over the place.
Some characters, I like from the start like Orochi, Madara, and Streusen, some I dislike right away like Sengoku and Gan Fall. Then there's Yamato who just haven't done enough for me to like or dislike.
Chopper was going to be a terrible crew member. Just a horrific forced cute marketing tool.
Robin did not belong in the crew. She was too overpowered and her personality clashed with everyone else's.
Franky was TOO weird and I did not want him in the crew at the time. Wasn't until thriller Bark when he made instant bridges and pillar chucks that I came around to him.
Brook, oh mygod this guy's entire first chapter is him being obnoxious and making panty jokes!
Jinbe, man he's just so boring and ugly!
It takes time for the characters to grow on you sometimes.
Note that not all of the above opinions are actually opinions I personally held at the time (some of them are though!) but they do represent at least a chunk of the community.
Once Yamato meets the real scabbards.
It only just now occurs to me that Yamato is now going to meet the scabbards right after the Fake Oden incident. That's bound to be… something. Especially if he introduces himself as... Oden. Like he did to Momo.
May even be the entire reason for that bizarre almost throwaway side bit.

Oof. That's a fantastic observation. I kept thinking of that meeting from Yamato's perspective, but putting myself in Kinemon's shoes and meeting someone claiming to be Oden after what just happened and just how devastated he was…sheesh. Kinemon won't take that kindly, and we all know that Momo is going to run and embrace Kinemon as soon as they see each other. I don't think Yamato's the type to cry at that, but...damn. That's bound to be some growth for Yamato. You're totally right that it could have been building to this moment.
Yamato wanted to die for Shinobu and Momo before he knew of Luffy. This isn't for Luffy.
! [qimg]https://i.imgur.com/BRfq5lu.jpg[/qimg] [qimg]https://i.imgur.com/nN662Nq.jpg[/qimg]
Nothing in any of those panels say Yamato wanted to die for Momo or Shinobu.
Also Yamato knew taking that weak ass attack to him wouldn't even phase him, which it didn't
The only reason Yamato is even there is because Luffy told him to. If Luffy hadn't Yamato would've went to the roof top with Luffy. Are you paying attention to the sequence of events properly?
That's just the backstory to Yamato's reasoning. He literally says he would die on the page after

I didn't like Usopp at all. Thought he was a shit character design (even his dad looks cooler than him), annoying, lame, and a waste of nakama spot. I felt Oda could obviously do so much better with a sniper/marksman/gunner type of character, I mean he'll look at Gil Bastar. I got use to him but it took like 200 + chapters for me to like him. Maybe more. I do see the charm and point of the character. Can even find him funny now.
I didn't like Jimbe either. Really didn't want him to join (well documented in past nakama threads). Design or character. Plenty better Fish-Man designs. If a shichibukai had to join I would've wanted Kuma. I know every strawhat personality can't be as quirky and wild as the other but I found him boring. Definitely liked how long it took for Oda to have him join. I'm sure I'll get use to him though. He's pretty dry and quiet and has blended in well already.
Hey maybe somebody should make a things they dont like about the Strawhats or One Piece thread :ninja:@Cockycent:
That's just the backstory to Yamato's reasoning. He literally says he would die on the page after
Yeah, AFTER Luffy told him to go protect Momo.
What are you missing?
You originally said Yamato wanted to die for Shinobu and Momo before he knew of Luffy. That's not true at all. Everything you posted from the manga is AFTER Yamato met Luffy. The only reason he even knew Momo was alive or around was cuz of Luffy.
Also the I would die for you line is said specifically to Momo not anyone else. The sentiment is no different than Luffy's. I'm not sure why you don't get it. Especially since we've seen the Strawhats do the same or say similar to so many princesses before.
I didn't like Usopp from joining until Water 7, which is when I finally properly understood what his role was and what he was truly about. And then he became my favorite for the next several years..
Yamato states he wasn't strong enough back then to do anything, but is now. His motivations are the same as it was before he knew Luffy or Ace. Shinobu had a similar issue with feelimg like she couldn't do enough back then and when Kanjuro took Momo.
Both have the possible Momo retainer thread
Here’s Yamato’s timeline.
20 years ago – Yamato Age 8 – Witnessed the legendary hour, heard Shinobu’s words, tried to save Momo and failed. NOT imprisoned. Who brought him to Wano? Finds Oden’s journal. Why is he free to run around? Not explained. Probable flashback material.
19 years to 4 years ago – Yamato Ages 9-24 – Believes Momo is dead. Somehow becomes imprisoned in Onigashima, reason unexplained. Definite flashback material. Reads Oden’s journal enough to declare it a Bible.
4 years ago – Yamato Age 24 – Still thinks Momo is dead. Meets Ace. Learns of Luffy and his dream that he shares with the Pirate King. Makes Ace’s vivre card. Longs to go out to see with Ace and promises to meet him again.
2 years ago – Yamato Age 26 – Still a prisoner. Momo’s still dead. Learns of Ace’s death when the vivre card disappears. Most likely read Luffy’s escapade at Marienford where he rang the Ox Bell and “declared war” on the WG. Knows who Rayleigh is from the journal and takes note that he’s helping Luffy. Changes his dream to set sail with Luffy. Strongly believes Luffy will arrive in Wano. Dedicates his life to waiting for Luffy. Reads all about Luffy’s crew and their bounties. More than anyone besides Sabo, understands Luffy’s pain in that moment, something only the other Strawhats share.
Now – Yamato Age 28 – All that waiting paid off. Luffy has arrived. Momo’s still dead. Luffy not only came to Wano, he came to Onigashima. Yamato risked everything to find Luffy during a raid and declare his loyalty to Luffy and ask for a ride on his ship. Luffy one-ups all of Yamato's expectations and actually removes his handcuffs. Yamato owes Luffy a life debt for his freedom. Decides to follow Luffy’s orders in the raid.
In the last hour (according to some people) – Oh wait, Momo’s alive? Yamato forgets all about his imprisonment and his longing to set sail, the literal years he’s spent building an intense desire to travel with Luffy in particular, that Luffy freed him from his shackles, that he dreams to see the world Oden saw, to find the One Piece that only Roger and Oden found. My father imprisoned me? Someone else will take care of it. Luffy, the man I want to be my captain, demanded I protect Momo? Lol, gonna do anyway it because he’s my son. Gotta dedicate my life to this boy I thought was dead for 20 years and only found out five minutes ago that he’s somehow still alive.
It’s almost absurd to think Yamato would heel-turn that quickly and abandon every aspect of his character. Yamato becoming a retainer would require a complete reversal of everything his character represents so far that I would question Oda’s writing abilities. Red herrings are one thing, but a complete disregard of a character’s desires is something entirely different.
His motivations are the same as it was before he knew Luffy or Ace.
Oden is her motivation. Never was Wano, never was Momo. But after she learned about Luffy from Ace, he became part of her motivation. Her motivation is the same, but the number of people who motivated her expanded. They motivate her to be free.
While with Momo all she does is think and talk about Luffy's greatness and how Momo did a great job on bringing him to Wano. That's weird trait for a retainer.
While for Shinobu and the Scabbards Momo is the number one priority.
Awwww if it wasn't for Oda's "5 year plan" i would be very on board with Yamato joining. But i really don't want a new crewmate who is only around for the last stretch, so i hope Jinbe is the last.

We know one more is joining

Honestly, despite everything that happened, it still didn’t feel like Jinbe joined up until around Chapter 980. It never feels too late anyway since the times among friends can feel like it lasts a lifetime anyway, despite the real time, so I’d welcome Yamato joining anyway.

Would it make you feel any better if you knew we'd already passed the first year of the five year plan, only for Oda to then say "okay, now five more years" after he'd already used the first year?
No one can figure out any way it finishes in less than 7 years from now unless he REALLY rushes and cuts a lot of stuff super short. And while I'm sure Oda CAN do that if he really truly feels the need to, the musical chairs of this arc where threats go down then keep getting back up speaks against that.
At this point Oda's said it enough I believe he's cutting corners and pushing for that finish line and wouldn't bet on taking 10 or 15 more years anymore… but I wouldn't bet on 5 either.
Also, the end of the series won't be the end of the series. The anime will stretch out as long as they can, and barring some of the main characters dying and making the ending super definitive "the end", there will be movies every couple years for forever. Plus specials and spinoff tie in mangas that may not be the actual story but still the cast interacting.
Plus potential eventual anime reboot, or One Piece Super where they go off into space or like the Dr. Chopper comic or the school room comic or...
The end isn't going to be the end for any of them.
Did someone replace the word "Yamato" with "Carrot" in the past few pages or am I tripping?
Did someone replace the word "carrot" with "carrot" in the past few pages or am I tripping?
No that looks fine to me.
carrot sure is a hot topic these days. :)
At last people in this thread will have no choice but to see reason. At least, for a day.
Guess I finally got to agree with Shift, Yamato is joining!:ninja:
Did someone replace the word "Carrot" with "Carrot" in the past few pages or am I tripping?
Yeah Yam.ato has been replaced with "Carrot" among other names being changed to other things I believe (1 Peace => Sharmain Kling; Sharmain Kling => Lord Hot Dog).
April Fools?
What a cruel choice of humour. At least if I had a reference it would be more fun. Who is "Liar Bu"?
It's annoying to be honest but I suppose that is what this day is for. And here I was wanting to read the last few pages of post to catch up…I'll revisit the forums tomorrow and try to catch up on past post.
Anyway here's my contribution. Happy April Fools I guess.
!

Once upon a time chinese bootleg fansubs going through three levels of translation were the only way to get the series. Which led to sniper nose guy being Liar Bu and blond cigarette guy being Sunkist and sand transforming guy to be Clark Dell. Pink flamingo guy needs to be seen to be believed.
There's some others but that's for you to find out.
Oooh, now I'm curious. Also, prompts to the mods, this Aprils fools bit is fantastic.
Anyhow…(ahem). I sincerely believe that donquixote Tanjihado Lofulamingo will be the final straw hat.
What a day I pick to hitch my wagon to Caribou.
Way too overpowered though.
Knowing what happened, instead of a brain wipe or w/e he agreed to Vegapunk could've just took out all of his pacifista parts and then the WG strip him of his shichibukai title.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Vivi's return :ninja:
I actually was hoping w/e happened @ the end of Reverie and the news about Alabasta along with Oda naming her, Shanks, Hancock, and Sabo that something occurred that would lead her back to the crew.
Granted Vivi has to be way stronger to be around for this last stretch in the New World. I dunno maybe give her a logia.
Orochi, Madara, and Streusen are joining. I like them, so Oda is most likely to do it.
Replacing Carrot and Carrot with Carrot is bloody genius.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I wouldn't mind Carrot joining. I'm going through WCI right now and I really enjoy how they mesh with the crew. And their powers of electro and jumping is more interesting than a devil fruit or clubbing stuff. But that said, Carrot feels more logical at this point. Their set-up so to speak feels more genuine. So while I would prefer Carrot, I think Carrot stands a much higher chance. And really, I wouldn't mind them either, they're fun. Carrot is the only one I'm against.
Though who I really want is Vivi.
I'm curious though, I don't think Carrot will join, but her arc feels like it's setting her up for something. After her learning of the wonders and harsh reality of the sea, having her just return to Zou would feel lackluster. Maybe we can at least get another strawhat ally crew, like the Tontattas and Giants but this time with Minks.
Edit: It would be wonderfully trollish if we got both Carrot and Carrot. Would exceed Luffytarotarotarotaro's ten people prediction, but I wouldn't put it past Oda to pull something like that.
The real question isn't who the next crewmate is, but who the next imposter is.
I think Carrot has more chances than Carrot and Carrot. But maybe I'm wrong and Carrot will end up joining… but definitely not Carrot
What the hell is happening here

April Fools thing where it filters names like Yamaro (better candidate) to Carrot and Taka (8 year old not joining)to Carrot.

Oh lol forgot it was April fools
Next April all names should change to Carrot.
'Zolo' physically hurts my soul.
I understand why the name had to be changed but…
...ah it hurts just looking at it. No. Just no
I'm sorry Z0r0. I don't why, but I'm sorry.

Thanks for that. I remember some of them but I guess I started the series too late (2008) to experience the true 1 Peace.
!
Anyway, now that I had more time to process the mechanics behind this day, I have reconsidered how I feel about it. It's actually quite awesome when you cast yourself into the amusement that is the fun to be had. Thank you forums.
Dude…..I was TRIPPING out right now.
I’m surprised more people aren’t rooting for X Drake to be next Nakama
I mean I don’t think he has a chance of joining and he hasn’t been getting any real spotlight recently but I still would have expected someone to root for him

I’m not sure how Drake’s own story would move closer to fulfillment if he started traveling with Luffy, but interesting suggestion nonetheless.
Drake's easily one of the coolest Worst Gens and massive husbando material from what I've seen on social media.
I do recall people started considering him when he got his double page with Luffy taking down a couple of Numbers.
But Yamato its been eclipsing everyone else atm.

Yamato seems more motivated to travel with Luffy than anyone else, but I think it’s just a matter of figuring out how specific her motivation will actually end up being, which I don’t think will become apparent until Wano’s end, whenever that is, because we’re at 100 chapters into the arc at this point.

Of all the marine turned pirate storylines and possibilities Drake doesn't really fit that cuz he's the opposite of that.
Drake is a marine turned pirate that is secretly still a marine part of a secret marine group operating within the marines. I don't see how that could fit in the SHs as part of the crew.
I could see Drake for w/e reason showing up with his crew or SWORD and sailing with the crew like Law did during the war with the WG.
Another thing with Drake and any other supernova specifically they all have crews and while i understand Oda couldn't highlight and individualize a good deal of them for each crew I always find it weird how a lot of times they're not around and there's no explanation for where they are. So I couldn't see Drake joining and leaving his crew high and dry.
Oda explained Law's crew was elsewhere while he allied with Luffy and he did a great job having Jimbe transition from being captain to strawhat and had him part ways with his crew but I've wondered a lot since the time skip where are Hawkins', Apoo's, and Kid's crews are at. We got to see all of Bege's crew get absorbed in to the Big Mom pirates but doesn't seem that always happens like with Ace's crew when he joined WB. I also wonder where Bonney' s crew is as she seems to be all on her own.
Seems possible only Mad Monk Urouge hasn't had to lose or disband his crew due to circumstances.
I say all that to say I find it a bigger obstacle that captains of pirate crews to just up and ditch their crews to join the SHs. To me its easier if the crew is already long dead, or there was a mutiny, or they already disbanded awhile ago. I dont think Oda is gonna repeat the whole process of former captains parting ways with their crew.
The Worst Generation have been set-up and developed as equals to Luffy (looks at Zoro). I don't see Oda changing how he had written them at this point to have one of them become subordinate to Luffy. Sure there is Zoro but right from Zoro's introduction, Oda has made it clear how special the relationship Zoro and Luffy share is (Zoro also existed before the Worst Generation was a thing). Zoro is more than just the Swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates. He represents a voice that Luffy has access to to help him Captain in certain difficult circumstances. Not to mention that Zoro gets substantial focus in every arc he is in which can't be said for any other Straw Hat Pirate not Luffy. Characters have even been surprised that with Zoro's strength, he is a subordinate to someone (Igaram, Mr 9, Vivi, Franky Family, Urouge, Don Chinjao, etc). The fight against Kaido and Big Mom helps convey that - Zoro fighting on the same battlefield as Luffy.
At most, the Worst Generation members introduced two years ago on Sabaody Archipelago will become allies to the Straw Hat Pirates similar to the Heart Pirates and the Firetank Pirates during the WCI Arc.
I presume the lack of a push for X Drake being a potential Straw Hat Pirate is due to many readers being aware of such a thing.
Whatever rivalry existed is gone. Jinbe's official addition, and probably before that with red PGs, it disappeared. How does Oda make it realistic after all this? Best to end it since he's ending the story and just make em help here and there. Unless ending the story in 5 years is a meme as I thought it was. Then he has plenty of time to not abandon his habit of taking care of characters.
The supernova seem to exist as a foil to Luffy’s growth, and outside of Kid and Law, none have really been “rivals” to Luffy. Zoro is a special case since he is the first strawhat and follows Luffy for a bigger reason than blackmail. Like Mihawk said to Luffy, Luffy’s dream is far more ambitious than Zoro’s. Zoro knows that if he follows Luffy and if Luffy doesn’t stray, Zoro will achieve his dream, so it makes sense to follow Luffy specifically. Blackbeard is Luffy’s only real rival now, but he’s worst gen, not supernova.
The supernova showed what could have happened to Luffy in the New World. Hawkins, Apoo, Killer, and Kid made it clear that even an alliance of supernova were no match for one Yonko. So that was working in the background while Luffy and Law built their alliance to add tension. Similarly to when Luffy worked with Capone. Bonny is going to be a tie to the revolutionaries and Kuma (who all the SHs need a resolution with), and Drake should function the same for the Marines. If he stays on Luffy’s side after Wano and speaks to Coby some more, he may be the highest level ally in the Marines, unless Garp is the head of Sword.
Drake does have some interesting similarities to the Botanist crewmate in Oda’s drafts (mostly the headpiece), but he was scrapped for Robin, so I don’t think he was “reused” for Drake and it’s just a coincidence. I see Drake-for-nakama like I see Smoker. It’s contrary to his character who is focused on duty, and Drake wouldn’t abandon Sword just like Smoker would never abandon Tashigi and G-5. I also don’t think it’s in Oda’s interest to have a character with ulterior motives join the crew. They need to be behind Luffy 100%, and I don’t see Drake or Smoker giving up their ties to the marines.

Rivalry can still exist without overlapping goals. Whitebeard, for example, was Roger's rival, but had no interest in doing Roger's ambitious circumnavigation of the globe. He had his own humble goals. Heck, Shiki, another rival, wanted to ally with Roger. Garp was a rival too, but he was obviously not doing what Roger was doing.
The only Rival Roger had was Rocks, and even then, he was defeated a good time before Roger became Pirate King and was essentially erased from history, so even he was not much of a rival and more like an enemy akin to Kaido to Luffy. He could have been like one of Roger's arc villains for all we know.

Kid has said he's in it for the OP specifically. He's been sat next to Luffy so many times as equals. I'm interested to see how Oda keeps Kid's character honest. He's unwavering like Luffy. I think Oda might just have Luffy find the OP with everyone.
