Well, Takano has only been a OP editor for like a year, right? So 'the first time to shed tears' might not require that much drama.

He said it about 987 not 986

Luffy's punches were as strong as pistols from Ch. 1.
That was his whole point of wanting a punch 'as strong as a pistol' and then getting it with the sea beast (not to be confused with a sea king).

Hope your doing better Greg

I guess I didn’t mean in terms of strength, but moreso function given the explosiveness :)
Our Rubber boy is human heavy artillery now!

Interesting…this is the first time I've seen a specific distinction made, that the sea creature that took Shanks' arm was not a sea king.
Not big enough? Was this something Oda mentioned in an SBS or interview somewhere?
-
I thought sea beasts were the enormous fish monsters that look like other animals. The sea boars, sea cats, sea whatevers. I've only ever seen the big snake from chapter one referred to by name as the Lord of the Coast, never with any species or category designation. It wouldn't shock me if it was from one of the many databooks that never made it all the way into English though.

ONE PIECE editor Takano revealed in live streaming that he was moved to tears after he read next chapter (986).
It was the first time for him to shed tears since he became OP editor.OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
I wonder if a Flashback is incoming? Kaido and Yamato got to get one eventually
Weird though, the ending of the last chapter didn't seem like we were suddenly going to go into a deep and heavy story telling all of a sudden, just shows how fast Oda can go from comedy to seriousness I guess
-
I think it has to do with Kiku, going by how 985 ended.
-
The tone has gotten more serious for the past 5 or so chapters.

Momo really got executed perhaps.:ninja:

That was level 1 "ryuo". I wonder what level 2 does. :ninja:
-
As mentioned above, chap could be about Kiku.
But I dunno. It'd have to hit pretty hard for that and that's a lotta time spent there. Possible, but not what I'm currently thinking.
I think to hit hard and fast, the person in the best position is Momo. Not that he'd die. Crying doesn't immediately mean sad. But he's at the center of action with our main hero and villain so he's ripe for that kind of treatment.
Regarding Lord of the Coast, yes, he's a sea beast. You won't find that in any book or SBS. That was privately confirmed for me by Oda. I only add the caveat that he's free to change his mind, but that was something I specifically had confirmed.
-
Sounds like Momo having a moment like Luffy did in Loguetown would be the best bet. Looking forward to whatever happens
-
I suspect Kinemon may be the center of this. He has been the main focus since the flashback. Denjiro looks up to him and Kanjuro acknowledged him, despite Kinemon not being this tactical mind behind what unfold. Kinemon was the 1 slicing up the lackeys and roped in the crew initially(655). Kinemon has made moves to ensure there is no turning back and verbally echoed this stance.
My suspicion of him is mainly due to his recently reduced focus in the narrative recently. He changed the clothes and had the ships destroyed, then was shown being taken out of water thanking Usopp and Chopper for distracting BM. Focus has steadily shifted to new Oden, Yamato. Orochi's "death" can be a way to have Orochi and Kinemon's meeting delayed. If there is anything dramatic involving Momo coming up, I believe Oden's 1st 2 retainers will not be too far.
The silhouette behind Jinbe and Robin can't be too far behind. Did this individual get a Beast Pirate makeover? Are they a Beast Pirate? A lot of characters and subplots to follow. I don't know if this will be fortunate or not for the good guys. I've never cried reading anything and doubt I will, but have jokingly said I would. I believe the way King lent his sword to Kaido was worthy of tears of joy, so anything is possible here.
-
I wonder if it could be about Kidd's past?
-
I'd expect something related to Yamato and/or Kaido, given it feels like the spotlight is falling on them. So maybe a flashback to tidy up act 3. That or some Momo crap. Feels like the last thing that was worth shedding a tear over was the Fishman Island flashback for me.
-

Interesting! I find that to be fascinating. I always considered any super-sized sea creature to be a sea king. I suppose we've never really been told otherwise.
This makes me wonder…what defines a sea king? Existing in waters within a certain distance from the Calm Belt? A certain minimum size? The ability to be controlled by Poseidon?
The fact that Oda (at least for now) cared to specify that the Lord of the Coast is not a sea king, makes me wonder why. I wonder how that will play into the story going forward. Maybe sea kings are somehow naturally immune to the effects of conqueror's haki, and this will somehow play into their role in assisting Poseidon someday. Since Shanks used his haki on the Lord of the Coast, that would explain the distinction….
-
I never considered it a sea king, but just to double check, wikia says that OP Red sees it as a sea king. These databooks have been inconsistent to an extent.
-
Would be interesting to see how his fruit behaves after its user dies.
Better if his fruit comes to full effect the moment the blades fall and breaks them. That would be a tear-jerking moment too.
-
Oda probably just wants the sea kings to be a bigger deal than something Chapter 1 Luffy could take out in one punch.
-
He should've called it a sea count then
-

Imagine you could ask Oda anything, even what One Piece really is, only to opt for "is the Lord of the coast a Sea King or just a big fish?"
Hilarious

I think That if you ask Oda the big questions some editors show up and tackle you to the ground.

"Bro does Zoro have a thing for his swords?"

I sure hope he has like a designated fan shooer awayer. Otherwise his life will be being subjected to an never ending stream of who could Mihawk beat up questioning

The post-ending Oda's interviews will be something amazing. At that point he will be allowed to reveal a lot of stuff behind the writing procession, when and how he planned certain things, all the times he tried to do foreshadowings, plans for storylines or characters that later were scrapped, etc. it will be funny everytime he will release an interview.
-

The databooks have consistently said it is a sea king. Red (p 151) and Blue (p 95) both refer to it as Sea King explicitly, and Yellow (p 253) says sea kings first appeared in Chapter 1 (while saying that 'sea beasts' first appeared in Chapter 73, i.e. Mohmoo). Vivre Card would have been a great opportunity to clarify if he'd changed his mind, but it didn't say one way or the other.

Oda was probably like twelve drinks in and was like -C'mere kiddo, i'll let you in on a little secret

The data books say that sabo is dead.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
We have on one hand these lovecrafrian monstruosities like the turkey fish and its friends, that are clearly neptunians/sea kings, who attacking in coordination would for sure be a “Power that can destroy the world”, and then we have a bunch of overgrown sea animals that haven’t been a challenge for anyone with any fighting power, except shanks arm, in terms of scale and danger, where does a big eel falls into?
-
How funny would it be if Oda was just messing with Greg like "psst Takano what should I answer to this white doofus? OH YEAH TOTALLY IT'S A SEA uhhhh BEAST! yeah sure you can tell everybody i don't care"

I could have sworn I read elsewhere that the Lord of the Coast was not a sea king. If it doesn't exist it doesn't exist but the memory seems super real to me. Maybe I dreamed it. My dreams tend to come true.
-
The differences between beasts and kings are not entirely clear yet but the largest difference appears to be just that, size. And while we don't know the nomenclature of sea kings, sea beasts typically seem to be 'Sea (insert animal name)'.
Sea beasts are big but not to the extent of sea kings.
Sea beasts, like their name, typically appear largely based on a particular animal with the head most closely resembling a land or other creature. In the case of Lord of the Coast, probably an eel sea beast? Which is pretty lame for sea beasts, but, that's the point I suppose.
Sea kings can also resemble terrestrial or other creatures but their design is much more free. Instead of being a fish/frog, it'll actually be a giant frog.
I needed to confirm the difference some time ago for some work and he definitely wasn't messing around but I always defer to his ability to change his mind.
I had to confirm a myriad of other things too but uh, yeah. We'll talk more about that in the future. For now, def a sea beast as per Oda's word.
-
I always had that difference in my mind. First because sometimes we'd read "sea beast" and others "sea king", which implies two different classes (although not necessarily).
The second factor is that Oda tries to hype the sea kings as a great power in ocean, which would be underwhelming if we included all those sea beasts who were easily knocked out by the Strawhats since the beginning of the story. They can't be "sea kings" without downgrading their portrayal… so it's better to see them as just "sea beasts".
However, there are those creatures who were invoked by Shirahoshi at the climax of FI and that we had seen before in the Calm Belt, and they are just much bigger and feel a lot more powerful. They make their threat sound plausible and fearsome. Also, we've seen them in different locations, which makes them more special. True kings of the sea.
-
I'd put good money on sea kings being the result of pre-human testing for giantification.

@Johnny:
Or a Sea Earl, for the brits.
All i can associate that word with is Jason Lee and flannel shirts.
I could settle for a sea duke. Or sea vice-roy. Sea clergy? With pope hats.
-
Speaking of sea Kings, i have yet to get my head around how people like Zeff, Creek, Bepo, Don Chinjao and the yonkos managed to get out of the Grand Line and Made it to one of the fuor seas. Kozaburo even got the East Blue starting from the New World.. this means he crossed the Red Line
Will all of this be explained in the future?

If memory serves correct, it was adopted from the Danish title of Jarl, when the Danelaw existed back then.

Crossing the Red Line is not that big of a deal. You just get up the damn thing and get a ship on the other side.
It takes a long time, but it's simple.

It's not that big of a deal? I could be forgetting an example or two, but the only instances I can really think of when it comes to climbing/crossing OVER the Red Line are:
A) The Tenryubito/nobles/marines/etc using those bubble gondolas for the Reverie
B) Germa 66 climbing with their snails
C) Fisher Tiger scaling the wall with his bare handsAnd Fisher Tiger was noted to be an exceptional case, yet it's the only example we have of someone who isn't in some way affiliated with the World Government crossing OVER the Red Line. Getting a ship once you're over is a whole other thing that, frankly, I don't know how you'd do either if you just land in the ocean. Plus, Krieg had his same wrecked galleon in the East Blue that he did on the Grand Line, so we know he didn't get a new ship.
I'm rambling at this point, but do correct me if we have any examples I'm forgetting. It would seem more likely to me for them to cross the Calm Belt than it would to even TRY to cross the Red line, ie a dummy strong pirate like Rayleigh swimming through (not saying someone like Kreig could do anything like this, just an example). Even if they somehow did it, all y'all are pirates and better hope you don't get seen by any world nobles (though I get the Red Line's real big and Mariejoa is the only settlement we know for sure to be on it).
-
Pirates go through Fishman Island all the time, and its on the grandline compass route. I don't think its a particularly large issue.
-
Greg where do you think Yamato’s story is going after the end of this arc? He clearly wants to head out to Sea but it seems he has no experience or Companions but the fact that he was brought so late into this arc and has a Serious Nami Look a like face makes me doubt he’d join the crew, so I have zero idea where Oda is going with this character…. Do you have any ideas what Oda might do with him after Wano?
-

I think the issue is more how do you go from Grand Line to the Blue seas
Reverse Mountain is only one way -
The only possible solution is crossing the calm belt and cross the Red Line through a kind of gondola north or south of the Grand Line - at least in Krieg’s case. There have to be some settlements providing this kind of services. And as you can navigate outside of Grand Line one should be able to reach them.
