Education, and encouraging logical debate rather than just airing feelings.
Also, the opposite of crushing spirits. People are freaking out about the fact that there's been no news in a year, and that means its cancelled or the rights are lost or something. My point is Funimation almost certainly still has, and will continue to have, the license for some time to come. That they aren't releasing more has to be due to sales, but its certainly in their best interests to keep putting it out.
So they'll do the movies and the one offs, the things that are easy to sell and market. And at some point they'll release more episodes when there's a solid opening in the schedule that works in conjunction with something,
But for everyone complaining "But it's one of their biggest hits, why aren't they prioritizing?!?" do need to understand that, no, it's not their biggest hit, and there's also a hell of a lot of it. We love it, but there's good reason it's not a huge priority.
Compare this to the Stephen Universe thread where I HAVE been saying "the show is over and cancelled" for about a year and a half now, and, movie aside, there's not much evidence of there being any more, no matter how much people want a season 6 and read the tea leaves how they hope it is.
You look at the facts, the announcements, and what makes sense from a business perspective, not just "I like this and I want more!". (See also the nakama thread.)
-
Good. That's very much a sentiment I agree with!

Lol, yeah I don't understand how anyone thinks we'll still be getting another season of SU after that finale
I am curious though, is Netflix really not a perfect place of One Piece? I mean sure its definitely going to be expensive. But as far as giving people the opportunity to start at the beginning and marathon at their leisure, I feel like it's gotta be Netflix, Prime or back on Hulu. Crunchyroll and Funimation host all of it, and I feel like its impossible to follow weekly starting at the beginning on cable tv
-
But haven’t the voice actors said they recorded more for SU? Don’t even get me started on how rushed that finale was.

There's a movie coming. And there might be another movie after that. There may even be a movie a year for a while if they do okay in the ratings.
But three and a half years of radio silence from Cartoon Network, even to their shareholders, the fact that contemporary show Uncle Grandpa was "split into multiple seasons" but actually cancelled the same time they were, that the staff still hasn't announced a new season (and they have zero reason not to) how they scheduled those last 8 episodes, and how crazy fast they wrapped up everything? Those are not the signs of a show that thinks it has another full 20 or 50 episodes coming.
Animation has to be ordered a year in advance, and the popular shows get pick ups even further in advance or that. If there IS a season 6 coming, then no one on the staff knew about it until after this season finished airing and Cartoon Network is only now making that decision.
I could easily be wrong and they're just doing something REALLY abnormal here, but my guess at the timeline is this.
[hide]-Based on Adventure Time's success, CN orders an initial 52 episode season. Episodes are 11 minutes, so this is the equivalent of a normal 26 episode order of any other show. This also lets them air an episode a week, year round, basically… which worked well for Adventure Time and Gumball.
-Based on early ratings, averaging 1.7-2.0, CN thinks it could be a long runner, and orders seasons 2 and 3, another 60 episodes. It's a good partner for Adventure Time and Regular Show and Gumball.
-Ratings remain okay, but they don't grow, and in fact slip, generally doing 1.3-1.5, except during events. Not bad, but not great. Teen Titans Go premieres, and consistently gets 2.0-2.2 in the ratings, sometimes going as high as 2.6! It's a cheaper to produce show and gets almost twice as many viewers... and in the little boy demographic advertisers prefer rather than the girls Stephen has drawn in. (Yeah, networks hate girls. It's dumb but they do.)
-CN is already committed to another 120 episodes of Steven, but they don't want to push it as hard. So, in March 2016 (three years ago!) they split the existing seasons in half, and treat it like its a new order, when its actually the same order they made a year ago.
-At this point, they realize Regular SHow and Adventure Time are going to be wrapping. They both have hundreds of episodes, plenty for syndication, but ratings and dvd sales are dwindling. This of course means in about two years Stephen will no longer have similar other 11 minute shows to pair with, and it will become harder to schedule.
-Steven slows down airing, they try airing it in blocks to goose the ratings. It doesn't help, and probably actually just hurts any built momentum. Ratings slip to 1.0-1.3 range, with exceptions) while TTG keeps getting 2.0's. TTG starts airing nonstop.
-Steven reaches the end of its production about a year ago, ending with a big wedding cliffhanger, hoping for a season 6. CN just can't justify another 26 episodes, but the show has a reasonable following, so they okay it for 8 more to wrap up the story. AND! A movie! THat's something they can advertise as special. They were only airing it once every four months anyway. But, because of negotiations for these extra 8 episodes and movie, no one announces "the grand finale" or that it's over or that people need to start petitions... because more IS coming, they're still working.
Just not on a full blown season 6.[/hide]
Animation takes so long to produce, you usually don't declare its ending or cancelled, because given the target audience, and that a renewal can happen and visually stay the same regardless of time passed or how much talent is retained, its a lot easier to fudge more if you change your mind later than it is with a live action show. You just slow down the release of episodes, let them run their time out, hope it has a decent ending, and let the fandom move on without pissing anyone off.
So, between splitting the original 3 seasons into 5, a possible mild extension and a movie, and the fact that episodes have kept coming out sporadically, it's seemed like there's been regular updates and production… but in reality, aside from the movie, neither Cartoon Network nor the staff have actually said anything official about a season 6 since 2015. There is zero reason to keep that under wraps. It doesn't serve as a nice surprise or make the shareholder happy, and only upsets the fans to not know for sure. Even Venture Brothers which goes 2 years between seasons always announces their next season is coming as soon as the current one finishes. And they just announced Rick and Morty has like an 8 year 100 episode contract.
So there's still potential negotations going on, or more movies coming that will for all intents and purposes be a season 6, but... absolutely nothing official at this point..

It’s pretty telling that Netflix has licensed anime from virtually every production company except Toei. They ask way too much. Saint Seiya doesn’t count since it’s an “original”.

Exactly. Lord knows how much they charge to license out seasons of OP for streaming. Probably an absurd amount, which makes no one want to touch it with a 39 and a half foot pole. Gotta love ol' Toei.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Not to mention, Toei completely screwed up by not rebranding the anime to "One Piece: New World", or something like that after the time skip, and starting the episode count back to 1. As it stands, potential licensors and fans alike take a look at 800+ ep. count and say kthxbye. That could have been a great jumping off point, and people wouldn't feel as obligated to shift through and pay for hundreds and hundreds of episodes. I mean, Toei did that with Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, and that worked out well (granted OP has a more overarching story than DB does, but if they could have done some Ennis Lobby- style flash back episodes, that probably would have been just fine for many people).
Combined with the dog snot slow pacing that's only gotten slower over the years, Toei really, really should have rebranded and re-marketed the whole franchise, given it a clean slate and made it more manageable for everybody. But I guess since the formula of just plugging away week after week works in Japan, they don't want to make any changes.
-
It's okay, they're just setting up for when they do One Piece Kai in 10 years.
Sadly, up through Alabasta it wouldn't change all that much, there was very little filler and padding until after that, aside from a handful of full blown filler episodes.
-
The first time around they failed to get through Alabasta, and that was skipping entire arcs and cutting episodes to get through as fast as possible.
The second time around they failed to get through Skypeia.
Third time around they got through Water 7 and some change, in a timeslot that started at 10pm and then got moved to a 2 am timeslot where they didn't need any ratings at all, and still stopped before the war, one of the biggest and most popular arcs.Multiple times in every timeslot possible it failed.
Meanwhile DBZ and Naruto at one point they were doing six episode marathons on a daily basis in prime time, and Sailor Moon the channel personally paid to get the second half of the series done.
They had no problem getting through 220 episodes of Naruto (And would have aired the rest had Nick not gotten Shippuden) and 366 episodes of Bleach and 167 episodes of Inu Yasha all in actual good timeslots with constant promotion. Inu Yasha they even kept in rotation from 2002 until 2014 when they lost the rights, and picked up and aired the Final Act as soon as they could.
Cowboy Bebop despite only being 26 episodes never once left the schedule between 2001 and 2007, and still gets rerun in its entirety once a year for half the year. They aired OP because they felt like they should due to its pedigree, not because the ratings actually warranted it. Same with 70s Lupin the Third and original Gundam (which they also didn't finish.)
The first and second times I consider to be circumstantial. There wasn't a break between the 4Kids and Funimation dub on old Toonami. 4Kids dropped the license after the Rainbow Mist arc because it was getting tougher and tougher to edit out all the blood, alcohol, and violence. They got so sloppy that there was at least one moment in Alabasta where an unedited frame of blood was left in.
Shortly after Funimation picked it up One Piece, Cartoon Network execs shrunk the block, removed most of the anime, and forced on Ben 10, Naruto, and Samurai Jack until its inevitable cancellation. The Funi dub didn't last a full year.
One Piece had many badly-timed factors going against it (and still does). Ratings may have played a part in 2008. It's without a doubt that they were one of big deciding factors for Adult Swim era Toonami in 2017.
To be frank, I don't see One Piece ever returning to Toonami without Toei taking a significant cost cut on the TV broadcast license. -
I hope One Piece returns to Toonami. If it does, it needs to start after the timeskip. To be fair, I just can't see any reason it would return, sadly.
-
I mean, if they took it off, there’s no reason to put it back.
-
It's okay, they're just setting up for when they do One Piece Kai in 10 years.
Haha, probably. Though wasn't Kai a bust in Japan? You'd think they'd learn their lesson and make their long runners well-paced to begin with so they don't have to "Kai" everything, but let us not forget who we're dealing with here.
I cant find it right now, but I distinctly remember Jason DeMarco over at Toonami saying that cost was the main reason for not renewing OP past Thiller Bark. Had Toei lowered the price, Toonami probably wouldve kept the show running at 2 or 3 in the morning like they're doing with Shippuden, to respect the fans. But then again it's all or nothing with Toei apparently. I really hope they change their "negotiation" practices (or lack thereof) before it comes back to really bite them on the ass one day.

The first 206 episodes would have to be remade in HD anyway.
-
Netflix is a terrible idea, I really am only here at this point for DVDs/Blurays, not necessarily the dub. This is honestly the only anime I continually buy physical copies of.
-
Man, ask me a year ago and I’d never have thought it would be cancelled, but now I’m starting to dread it. Just need to keep reminding myself that they’ve already dubbed a whole arc, so it isn’t cancelled. Just something holding it up.
Can’t someone nag OPP or Steven to ask Funi?
-
I feel like if anyone HAD any info and were able to share it with us, they would have by now.
-
I asked the Community Manager of Funimation if us One Piece fans should be worried about a dub cancellation, and she hasn't responded. I understand NDA's, but this is quite obnoxious now.

Collection 22 and 23 are half off on Amazon for "anime month".

Thanks. Picked these up, though now I'll be missing 15-21. I double dip for the collections, so I'm in no rush for them (have every voyage ever released on my shelf). If I had the money, I'd buy the collections all on release day to support the show as I used to. Now that I realize OP is in trouble, I'll go back to doing that if we're so lucky to get them again.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Speaking of Toonami, I wonder what they'll get to replace Hunter x Hunter in a few months when it ends. I'm hoping the new season of Mob Psycho will be up before then.
For once, I think I'll actually buy the new Sabo set on rightstuf and pray it comes early (and cancel the order if it doesn't).
-
SABO TRAILER GET!!!
Adult Sabo is voiced by Vic Mignogna, so that puts to rest that question. Guess this'll be his last performance as Sabo. Some interesting stuff in the trailer.
"DUBBED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME"
"COMPLETE YOUR ONE PIECE COLLECTION"
Complete your One Piece collection? Eh?
No other voices to be heard in the trailer, other than young Ace, and the Dressrosa tournament announcer. Nice trailer, nonetheless.
-
Complete your One Piece Collection is uh… Troubling language.
-
Honestly I'm not worried about completing the One Piece collection line. It's just saying add something else to your collection.
-
“Complete” is a troubling word, but I think we’re looking into it too much. I doubt they’re that conscious of their wording.
Bummer there aren’t any new voices. Oh well. It’s only a few weeks away.
-
I'm not gonna feel good about that line until someone from Funimation confirms that it isn't meant to suggest One Piece's cancellation.

Try to get them to respond to your inquiry. I dare you.

Hmmm. Is that because my territory's locked out of the the video (mirror) or because Funi wants to avoid a comments bombardment from Mignogna defenders?

Must be a territory thing, posts are working fine on the US side.
"Complete", though, that ain't good.
If ever there was a time to write in, this would be it: https://www.funimation.com/contact-us/
(Under Reason for Contacting, I went with General>Title/Feature Availability.)

I just messaged them. I'll let you know if they respond.

Like Zephray said, I don't think we should hold our breath for answers. But it's still good to let them know there are fans that will be disappointed if they drop the series.
-
Many OP collections are going for $16.99 on funimations website. Support them!
-
Episode of Sabo is half off.
I ordered Heart of Gold, Film Z, Film Gold, Episode of Sabo, Strong World and collections 18-21.
-
Collections also on sale for a dollar cheaper on rightstuf. Considering getting a few. Anyone have any coupons?
-
Just caught up with this thread. I liked the Episode of Sabo trailer, looking forward to watching it!
Regarding a few other points:
The dub is definitely not cancelled. They're still releasing One Piece content, just not the main story. I reckon once Episode of Sabo is released there probably won't be any further One Piece released until later in the year where they'll release maybe another TV special or two or something along those lines. Hopefully by then they'll have already announced Season 10 during one of the big summer cons or on their blog.
Straw Hat VA's have mentioned dubbing the body switch parts of Punk Hazard so they have definitely started dubbing it if they haven't already finished it. It will come out, it's just a matter of time. When that will be is anyone's guess. Personally I'd like to see it start releasing this year but I can also see them sitting on it until 2020 unfortunately.
As for Toonami, DeMarco said on his ask.fm a while back that currently there are no plans for them to put One Piece back on Toonami, however he did say that it wasn't impossible that it might one day return.
Someone also mentioned it being strange that FUNimation keep the simulcast but not the dub, but I remember back in 2011ish when it was still up in the air if FUNi would get Season 4 and beyond (man remember that wait?) that they stated they would continue to simulcast the series until it's completion regardless if there was a continued English dub or not.
As for asking them straight up, I don't think they'll answer stuff like that publicly. I remember reading that someone had asked them at a con and got a "can't talk about that right now" kinda answer so that gives me hope this is just a temporary hiatus and they're releasing these TV specials to try and boost One Piece profits before going back to the Voyage releases where profits will most likely return to what they were.
-
But what do they gain from sitting on Punk Hazard? Wouldn’t a cushion be more comfortable?

I’d love a source for this. My worry is that I haven’t heard any news where they said they they aren’t able to talk about it, which strongly implies their in negotiations. If that’s the case, I’d feel better. What I’ve seen instead is pure silence, which could mean anything. That’s worrying.
-
The longer they wait to release anything on DVD, the less it will sell.
Physical media is dying. -
But what do they gain from sitting on Punk Hazard? Wouldn’t a cushion be more comfortable?
To be honest I don't think they've finished dubbing the arc. Whether that's due to actor unavailability or Toei giving them a difficult time over something, I have no idea.

The source was this very thread actually, I want to say around end of last summer. Someone said they asked them something in regards to the next One Piece season and got that type of answer. It might just be the way said poster interpreted the answer but they made it sound like it wasn't any cause for concern
-
Maybe she got a part in frozen 2. All the comments are begging for OP, but I doubt that’s it.

Actually, that's not a bad shout. It most likely won't be One Piece, unless they've licensed Stampede.
Oh, it could be she's going to be in Fruits Basket. Sigh.
-
Inb4 they dub Stampede for money and still never release Punk Hazard and beyond.
Really questioning FUNi as a company since Sony took over.
-
As we've been saying, they're now the smut-machine. Not sure who is taking their place. Hi-Dive and Sentai? Viz even moreso, I guess?
-
It isn't One Piece, Colleen has just tweeted. Most likely because every response was asking for One Piece, apart from a handful.
-
Hah. Glad she knows the demand is there.
-
It's presumptuous to put all the blame on FUNi when for all we know it's most likely Toei being Toei.
-

Probably. Seems the most logical.
-
She's playing someone in Fruit's Basketcase.
-
Well that isn't really surpised. Since Fruits Basket is one of Funimation's mega hit series in their early days and they are going all out for the dub for the new series.
-
I really feel like our best move is to support One Piece Stampede, I think we should at least have no doubts FUNi will push that movie hard since they've been having a lot of success with theatrical films lately. If that movie does well, we shouldn't have to worry about FUNi fighting hard for more seasons.

Right now our best move is to support Episode of Sabo and Season 9 Voyage 5.
Both are on sale.
