@Jabberwok:
I don't even know where to begin. I don't know if you're feeling nihilistic or advocating giving up or what. You're just complaining and disparaging everything so you can feel better about not being involved, while still telling everyone else to be more aware.
What's not to know? I'm acknowledging the 800 lb gorilla in the room here when it comes to today's political atmosphere that everyone seems to just want to accept as the status quo without seriously looking at improving the system so shit like this doesn't perpetuate. And where did I ever say that I was not going to be involved? I'm always involved when political elections come by voting, volunteering at the polling stations, and sending calls and messages to my three levels of government reminding them of their promises and issues that need to be resolved with their constituents. Telling people to be more aware is part of democracy as you guys always do to your fellow members whenever voting time comes around. If you're considering my attitude to be nihilistic, Jabber, then I don't know what to say to you.
Politics, in reality, is almost always a choice between the lesser of two evils, the selection of what's least bad. Democrats aren't perfect and absolutely no one here is saying that. They do plenty of shitty things, often don't stand up for their representatives, and play games to score political points. But Republicans have done objectively worse things. Ignoring sexual harassment and abuse, disenfranchising voters, excusing white supremacists. Stripping benefits from the poor, elderly, and disabled in order to cut taxes for themselves. Enabling companies to pump proven contaminants back into the environment. Dehumanizing American citizens and contributing to the 3,000 dead in Puerto Rico through woefully late and inadequate aid. Separating THOUSANDS of children from their families and putting them in overcrowded makeshift prisons.
When you have the choice of the lesser of two evils, you're still picking evil. Either way, both parties have freedom to enact policy that suits their interests in the name of the people. If the people see such policies to pass without giving their reps hell over it, they're just as responsible.
A blue wave this November doesn't fix those things. But it better reflects the will of the American people and puts a massive check on Republicans' worst actions in the future.
That may be so but the Republican party won't simply vanish into the ether as a result. It will only mean that they will assess their own faults, build a case against the Dems, and use it as a tactic to come back in 2020 and hope the people are stupid enough to fall for it.
@Md-Martin:
You really need to read about the history of the federalists.
Look. Who's. Talking.
@Cyan:
I wouldn't even trot out the lesser evil shit, the GOP decided to be the party of white grievance and monstrous economics decades ago.
Evil is evil regardless of the good-natured banner they march under.
@baby-boo:
I don't live in your country so whether or not you want a big military, big government, balanced budget - the typical differences that growing up I saw as the difference between the two parties, is of no consequence to me. If one wants define either side of the spectrum on those positions as "ruining the country", that's also of no interest to me, that's no interest to anybody watching from abroad.
If this is of no consequence to you, then why bother posting?
While what's considered moral does change with time, right now the better us can agree that equality is good, education is good, taking care of people is good, racism is bad, and all that Robby listed. And the opposite of that is what today's Republican party stands for, and that is ruining your country. You can say it's a matter of opinion, but historically it will be judged as the right opinion (by those who are sane). We all know who the good and bad guys are in your Civil War, and the outcome of the civil rights movement to be the right one. A great deal too many are still unhappy about those two.
Look. You guys think the Democratic party is good while our elders think the Republican party is good. This is causing major clashes between generations here. This SHOULD NOT be happening in a democratically free society that works on collectively resolving issues that affect ALL Americans. For all you know, boo, and for all I know, what our Democratic stance is can end up changing into Republican stance in the far future and we'd be bickering with our kids over how real democracy should work. So, your views on this are pure semantics at best and a self-fulfilling prophecy at worst.
Bipartisanship sounds lovely, and I know Trump likes to paint Democrats as the bad guys for not meeting him in the middle, but when the topic of discussion is locking up children in cages, you'll have to excuse us if we justifyingly call you "evil".
No, you're not excused. You're only looking at the situation through liberal-colored glasses and not understanding the fact that immigration doesn't differentiate over who enters the country illegally. Kids are not exempt. If you're caught at the border with your kids, you can't use them as a bargaining chip. That's the law. The law is neither good nor evil and until you've been at the border and see how much of an issue it is with the country and agents patrolling, you have no say in the matter. Have a nice day.
@Kaiolino:
Have Democrats ever accused a Republican of something they themselves are guilty of?
Taxation without representation?
@Cyan:
There is no political system in the entire history of humanity without factions.
Marxist-Engelist Communism? Oh right. Communism is evil. Never MIND that the Cold War version of it had nothing to do with Marx's core principles.
@KzTxL7:
Democrats also come off as terrible at being evil.
At least when you compare them to Republicans.
So the consequences of not signing up for the Affordable Care Act is NOT a decent effort?
@Robby:
The Republican party of my lifetime has always been iffy and sucked near as I can tell, I mean the Bush era was a bunch of endless wars and incompetence and ultimately a market crash at the end, but it wasn't straight up evil corruption like it seems to be right now.
There you again with the conjecture, Robby. You're rushing to conclusions without even taking the time to understand WHY the mid-west supports Trump and the party. It's just all "Democrat or BUST" with you. This is why you're not fit to be mod here!
