@MajinArekkusu:
So whats the verdict from those who've seen the netflix movie? I saw positive and negative reviews on youtube. Positive mostly from those who don't know source material.
If you haven't seen the original it's probably okay as a generic horror movie with some gruesome deaths. But if you have, it feels like a super predictable, rushed, dumbed down version of the story.
Like for instance, the book has it's 100 rules all written down. Instead of Light methodically figuring out the restrictions over time he just… gets told. And all the methodical scheming and deductive work that would have spent 20 minutes on a scheme in the original to get someone's name to eliminate them gets glossed over in about 15 seconds. The building of the Kira name is a 30 second montage. Etc. As a result it just doesn't feel anywhere near as smart or clever.
The biggest problem is the fact that it's an hour an a half instead of a 4-8 hour miniseries. Given more time it would probably have been decent, but as is, it's just a much weaker cliffnotes version.
Also, it would have been infinitely helped if they just changed the character names and made it completely it's own thing. When its Light and L and Ryuk you can't help but compare and know the beats. If it had been, I dunno... Alexander and Blackmask and Ctlaw, and just been "another story of the deathnote" rather than "THE story of the deathnote but messed up" it would have played better with less comparisons.
