Yeah have to admit the Panda girl was pretty sick, more of her.
Chapter 861: The Consummate Actor

Press F to pay your respects for the door.
-
Poor Big Mom,worshiping her own photo as some benefactor.
-
Ehh, didn't really care for the pacing this chapter. But I'm sorta glad we got the break now and not before something really exciting happens. The next couple of chapters however will be and that makes waiting for it easier.
So Mother Caramel = big mom's mother?
Maybe Caramel isn't actually her actual/biological mother but a foster mother who wears a nun attire? Possibly Big Mom was abandoned by her biological parents in her youth and was raised by this 'Mother' Caramel?
Also, we didn't know anything about Big Mom's past except the whole strained relationship between her and the Giants of Elbaf but that was like before the proposal of Prince Loki to Lola…so maybe, whatever Big Mom really is, like why she is so huge sized like a Giant and she was hated by their race...maybe Mother Caramel has something to do with this in her past? Like after Big Mom being hated by the Giant race, she was taken in by Caramel who treated her like a daughter and they bonded together like a family and from there onwards, something happen to Caramel and Big Mom would go on a journey to become a pirate and become one of the most powerful pirates in the New World where she reigned as one of the Yonkous?
-
Decent chapter overall, but let's get to the meat of the story now.
-
Mangastream seems hellbent on getting the names consistently wrong. Caramel, Dogtooth… we'll have to deal with people using those names for years because of it.
-
Come to think of it, now we're almost at the ceremony I really find it too convenient (there goes that word again) that no-one did so much as raise an eyebrow at Brulee's prolonged absence. She could have been not invited, but considering how several of the elder siblings are here I would find this strange.
Either way I don't expect the mirror world evasion to succeed and everything's about to go south, so at this point it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. But really the Straw Hats have had it too easy so far. -
Similarities between miss Bakkin and Mother Carmel. Miss Bakkin also have those glasses many Big Mom pirates share. Wicked Witch of the West / East. Something is going on with Pudding's manipulation of memories that Big Mom hold dear to Mother Carmel. Where is Big Moms soul

-
Oda picked a fine week to go on brake. TOO EXCITED FOR NEXT CHAPTER.
-
@Kaido:
For all we know Brulee just does her own thing protecting the woods.
She still has to report about it. Although you could argue that the Seducing Woods, due to being the coast of Whole Cake Island, always requires supervision.
!
-
This all will go to poo really soon but the escape will probably come from the fishman island treasure chest
-
@Kaido:
For all we know Brulee just does her own thing protecting the woods.
I could buy that, seeing how most of the characters we saw in the Enraged Army aren't attending the event. Surely not everyone on WCI has to be involved in the Tea Party. But still, it's a stretch.
-
It is not that we have all of other 83 something children are present in the party.
-
This all will go to poo really soon but the escape will probably come from the fishman island treasure chest
That's actually a nice idea
-
yes well Linlin explicitly stated she will be opening treasure chests after the ceremony naturally we ll see it open and a what help is a guy who can predict the future when no one has an idea about the chest…
-
And Oda busting out even more crazy awesome/weird designs for the Charlotte Family/Big Mom Pirates this chapter, love it! I also loved the Panda Zipper-Teeth Girl everyone's talking about, but did anyone see the dude with the huge Captain Crunch-esque hat, mustache, sunglasses, and pipe make a return? I spotted him on my first readthrough lol. As we saw in that meeting a few chapters back, (Count Mario's got a good image of it right there) there are still a ton of other interesting looking background pirates/family members. I really wanna get names for them at the very least, maybe in an SBS someone will ask about all Big Mom's children? Hopefully lol.
Mother Carmel was also pretty neat, really looking forward to see how this all ties in with Big Mom's past & Pudding's machinations. So many factors at play right now, I can honestly say I have no idea where this is going moment to moment. This is probably Oda's most unique/engaging/unpredictable scenario in quite some time. I can't wait for the next chapter!
I wonder if Amande will attend the wedding. Or if we'll get any clue about Cracker's status. Or if Bobbin will return, horribly injured, to try and warn Mama. So many possibilities, so much awesome.
-
If Big Mom memory mention is anything to go by, Mother Carmel maybe the result of Pudding memory manipulation rather than Lola.
Maybe both but I doubt.
-
looks like ivankov…......

Yeah I figured we were due for a break. But it's such a great place to stop for it, calm before the storm as they say. Anyway breakdown time.
Cover:
In the words of the late JewWario: Kitty!Main Chapter:
Last minute planning: Okay seriously, Bege knows full well that Big Mom has homies all around. Why would you speak of your plan right in front of one? He was already sweating bullets when that Sweets Commander stopped a guest. Is he trying to get caught?…Well really that wouldn't be a bad twist though, distraction and what not. Still very rookie move on his part, especially for a guy who's known for strategy. In any case, considering they're already bringing out the mirror now and putting so much emphasis on it, I'm just counting down the minutes where it gets broken.
Caramel: Hmm I'm sensing foreshadowing with this. I'll explain more in my speculation but I have a feeling this is more important then a trigger to make Big Mom weak.
Treasure Chests Galore: Seriously all chests? How...oddly convenient. Oda really focusing on these here, so I take it he has something planned.
Straw Hats Resting: Heh so adorable and yeah get ready for some lunacy Bege. Heheh
Sanji vs Pudding, the Prequel: Oooh right, of course Sanji is still something of a pervert even with an enemy and already it's proving a problem. In fact is he even conscious when they had came in on that cloud or did Pudding....?
Overall:
Yeah I called it last week, still something of a setup. But at the least here were finally moving along and it was fun seeing both sides going about their business and it actually feeling like tension now due to being close to zero hour before things really go pear shaped. Plus I dug the two page spread and Sanji and Pudding's entrance. So now that everything's ready to roll, all that's left is to watch the fireworks.Speculation:
Listening to the podcast recently brought up an interesting point. What if Big Mom's is insane as she is because Pudding's power kinda messed up her memory and made her mind unstable. Would explain a bit her random mood swings (cravings not withstanding). That line Pudding made a chapter before about having to do mass memory wipes does lead some credence to this and might be why most of the mooks in Big Mom's employ don't know who Caramel is (Perhaps when Big Mom started wailing when the portrait was damaged, that's a bit of her real self trying to fight it's way out due to a memory of someone close to her?). If that's this case, this assassination attempt is starting to look like a tragedy in the making and, combined with the Death Flags surrounding Jinbe and Pedro well...this probably won't end pretty either way.Two to one says that all the chests are explosives or traps of some kind. The guests seemed a little too eager to give them to Big Mom.
So much for the Luffy-Wedding Cake theory if he's still sleeping in Castle Bege. Still looking forward to what he does have planned to invade the wedding though. Heh, keep em guessing Oda.
-
The faces during the conversation between Sanji and Pudding were pure gold, really makes the conversation funny as hell.
I'm surprised that the character I thought was Pandaman last chapter turned out to be a brand new character with a Panda mask. So many interesting designs for characters that'll probably stay unnamed during the arc, including frog gentleman, ponytail longleg girl, and dude with hat that has a face. -
Okay know I know what Sanji face in the last page reminded me off.
Goofy Goober from Spongebob
-
The guests gave her gifts in the form of treasure chests because…guess what...she's a pirate. In fact I loved Big Mom going "treasure chests! my favorite, thank you!" because for me it makes sense in context and also reinforces the fact that big mom's a pirate at heart, too. Like everyone said I'm actually stunned at how much I like panda shark teeth girl's design, but I think artistically her posture makes her interesting, too. Mother Caramel definitely has resemblance to characters like Elder Nyon, but I don't think it's actually her. With Pudding's abilities and Big Mom specifically dropping a memory line, I'm pretty sure like everyone else said there's a good chance Pudding's memory stuff is involved here. Was also nice to see Jinbe be the reliable guy again and let the others get some much needed rest. But where's Brook? Also, I'm fine with Sanji's perviness being so hardcore it's causing him this inner turmoil, especially given his nature and that Pudding has been intentionally dolled up and stuck in a wedding dress, but I didn't like the line where he said "maybe the rest of it was just a dream?". I would have rather seen his inner thoughts veer more towards trying to compose himself at least a little. All of this arc falls down to this wedding, and this entire wedding falls on Sanji's shoulders. Sanji himself is bearing the weight of all of this because he's not only a main character, but the catalyst of all this. I want him to handle Pudding in a way that's emotionally and contextually poignant. Especially after all this build up. If Oda fails here with Sanji, the blowback to the story's quality will be felt in several different places I feel. When it comes to the next few chapters I have faith that Oda will pull it off no problem. But I'm really praying he doesn't fuck Sanji up. I've never felt strongly towards Sanji, but I've always liked him as much as the other Straw Hats and really hope Oda can pull off some crazy shit when OP comes back after the break.
-
Go figure they go on break when shit is about to get real.
That aside the suspense is killing me lol

He would rest his eyes but he doesn't have any YOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!!!!
In seriousness he slept with big mom so he probably isn't as tired as the rest
-
Although it sounds totally unreasonable, after this chapter I have a strong feeling Pudding is going to fall in love with Sanji Hancock-style.
Sanji's silliness and Pudding's reaction can't be totally random: they have to play a part in the plot; and we know that the Strawhats' characterial quirks have the tendency to work to their own advantage in unexpected ways.
-
One thing that I've been thinking about for a while is, Big Mom said "I don't know why Neptune would part with this" so once the Tamatebako opens and explodes Big Mom's probably going to think it was supposed to be a sneak attack or some kind of treason by FI. One part of the equation for this tea party is the fact that you've got the Tamatebako and Jinbe together at the same place. He doesn't know it's rigged but he's definitely want to keep FI safe. I wonder how significant Oda will make this connection.
-
I'm kind of wishing for a Big Mom flashback now. Really interested in seeing how she became a powerful yonkou and all about Mother Carmel. I really think she still holds some surprises (like someone said, this could not be her real body, put a very strong homie)
-
The simple fact that the Tamatebako is so much presumably going to be opened by Big Mom should be proof enough that Big Mom will not be the one opening it
-
There is also the fact that BM will only open the tamatebako after the wedding, not before or during it. And when the wedding is over it means the whole battle will be over already, so the chances are someone will open it by accident (maybe someone trying to steal it) instead of BM naively opening it as we thought at first.
On the subject of the wedding schedule, I still don't get why Bege decided a distraction (a.k.a. Luffy) was needed after Pudding "shot" Sanji. In that moment, the whole battle between BM Pirates and the Vinsmokes would start, that should be distraction enough - and even though we know Luffy can do something way more outrageous than that, no way Bege would know as well.
-
I'm wondering if Pudding thought something was suspicious and wiped/looked at Sanji's memories… :S
-
A set up chapter but a very fun one with lots of new wacky character designs, funny scene with all of capone's guys, sanji fighting really hard and the mystery of carmel deepening. Cant wait until 2 weeks from now
-
A lot of talk about this break building suspense feels like I should warn people that there's only two chapters before the next break.
Makes me feel like Luffy's entrance will be the next cliffhanger.
-
At this point the plan actually succeeding will be more surprising than if it fails like we're all expecting…
Did we ever find out what happens to the soul when a homie dies?
-
I'm wondering if Pudding thought something was suspicious and wiped/looked at Sanji's memories… :S
That would make Sanji look incredibly stupid because he knows about her ability.
Also did I miss something or does still no one besides Opera know that Luffy and Nami have escaped? Montd'Or should have figured it out by now.
-
I'm wondering if Pudding thought something was suspicious and wiped/looked at Sanji's memories… :S
was about to say that too.
then again i dont think it would work out.
-pudding would need to erase 10 hours or so of his memory
-she also would've had to go through 10 hours of his memory
-why didnt she alert big mom then?
-sanji should've been on guard because of her powers
-that would make sanji go through his worst moment again -
I still do not undertand Pudding at all… What is her agenda? She is by far the most interesting character for me currently...
First she started as nice girl... but later we learned she is all about acting when she told Reiju about the plan and using the gun... But why has she done it?
Why not on Sanji himself? And why even risk the plan just for it? Not even mentioning that she told it Luffy/Nami as well. All just because she is an evil sardistic bitch? DunnoOn the same time we see the flashbacks of her and Lola, where we might have thought she was a nice girl... But she isn't
Later her comment after erasing A LOT of memories after Sanji's death? Why if everyone who should be bothered by it is on the kill list as well?Than we have the mysterious Third Eye and the ability Big Mom seeks...
As I mentioned from time to time... Maybe she was the one who should have married the Elbaf Prince, but she hasn't and altered the memories of Mom thinking it was Lola.
I know the flashbacks shows differently and she was just a kid there... But dunno would be some twist. And somehow I have the feling she already has the Third Eye ability but hasn't told Big Mom so and is acting before Big Mom as well.
I dunno... Maybe at the end she will be the main villian, which will really cause to turn Big Mom from killing SHs and Germa after learning the truth but dunno
So interesting
-
Can people really hate on Sanji, I mean just look at Pudding.
With Sanji a man with a libido the size of small countries, I can't blame him. :ninja:

It's kind off been building for a long period of time. First there was that horribly embarassing nosebleed debacle at fishman island. Then we got 3 arcs in a row where he didn't beat any major opponents at all. And here in Wholecake he's just looked stupid constantly. I personally view this as part of Sanji's character, so it doesn't bother me. But he sure as hell better knock somebody the fugg out this arc.
-
Lol sanji being so weak still. I see it now, the plan completely failing…then mom goes to open the tamatebako in front of the defeated alliance all arrogant and boom! Tables turn.
-

He will get his time, it just may not be with Pudding at this moment.
-
I cant figure the tamebakko Box exploding in big mom's Hands, capone Has alredy made it clear what Kind of haki she possess.
The whole plan is blased on the premis she's invulnerable under normal circumstances.
that Explosion for how much it Has been anticipated, it Has to to bring some damage, May it be physical or not . -
Sanji will still try to protect Pudding, it's rather obvious and they will have to adapt their plans a bit, Pudding has her own agenda can't wait to see what it is. Was nice to see a monster like Katakuri sipping tea at a tea party lol
-
I'm fine with Sanji being entranced by Pudding for now. Pudding's smoking hot and Sanji got to much of a libido.
But I really hope he will get his shit by himself when it matters. -
Prediction:
The only thing still intact in Whole cake island at the end of this arc will be the box.
-
I know this sort running gag of Sanji's has divided opinions on these boards, but I think this case may be one of the more clever. First off, Oda likes pulling these gags when one least suspects it (and when he thinks he can get away with it), and coming right off of the heels of Sanji's heart being broken and his serious appeals to the crew is just that. Moreso, he's doing it at a time where he knows his life and the life of others is in the balance, so it is one of the least likely times one expects him to go into full on heart-eyes mode. His internal struggle between fantasizing about a kiss and the reality of being shot in the head regardless is so delightfully absurd I could not help laughing. Morso because his rational self seemingly lost at the end.
Also, this now brings up the theory of Sanji's split personality where one one side he's an overzealous horndog and the other a perfect badass gentleman. Sort of like an early stage before a Cavendish/Hakuba-like split. Except apparently it is something that manifested after he left Germa and arrived in Baratie.
As for predictions, mine is that Sanji gets a major nosebleed right before the kiss and just barely propelled away from Pudding's bullet. Yet the gusher gives the image that Sanji had been shot and a seeming SH loss in the midst of the assassination plan. Maybe even a cheesy "Is Sanji dead?" cliffhanger.
-

I like this theory for the win. Looks like his training on Momoiro Island has actually backfired.

Looks a bit like Ivankov

Has to be this Okama..
-
Is there any type of wedding anywhere in the real world where the bride and the groom wait in a room before the marriage or is this just an OP thing?
-
I still think that Caramel is old Nyon from Amazon Lily… :sly:
So glad I'm not the only one that thought Caramel looks like a younger Nyon! ;)
-
Good chapter.
I'm really hoping that in a future databook, Oda will include every children of Big Mom.
Also, I'm intrigued by the relationship between Germa and the newspaper regarding the comic strip.
Finally, the good thing about Sanji dressing in white is that we will probably have the visual confirmation that he can use hardening CoA (for those who doubted it).
