@Monkey:
What country, India? That's a really really poor comparison to Cuba. Being fed is not an issue people in the Western Hemisphere worry about, unless we're talking Haiti.
Really? When UN's own Food and Agricultural organisation put 66 million people in Central and Latin America underfed.Their criterias are quite relaxed too and actual number should be even more.It was far worse in early 90's and i am not even going to talk about WHO's report on malnutrition in children under 5 years.
Given both the percentage and numbers are worse in South and South East Asia and far far worse in Africa, but i don't know what prompt you to say that their is no food insecurity in 'Western Hemisphere'.
Oh that's cute. Who is "you people".
Because the only one defending dictators around here on ideological basis is you.
I acknowledge a dictator being a dictator.Whether it is a communist ruler or a middle-east king. But in terms of human rights violation the cynics of the liberal world were always so vocal about the previous type while silently backing the later one.A business is a business after all.We all know what the end result is.
I am not supporting any ideology.I distrust dogmatic people very much. Growing up in a communist run state taught me the perils of it.I just don't like this cliche reaction of communist being 'so evil' and liberals being 'so righteous' when none of them came anywhere closer to make a perfect society.

No society and government has ever been perfect throughout history. There is always going to be that one policy in government that people just don't like but have to shut up and deal with which opposition parties like to capitalize on to show that the government that exists is a complete and corrupt dictatorship and would want its citizens to support said party to help "fix" things only to have any new fixes bring in new policie(s) that people won't like but are expected to shut up and deal with as well. It's an unfortunate cycle that exists that shift power to different parties and will continue to exist until the human race as a whole "smartens" up, so to say, and realizes that pointing fingers at one another and saying "I'm right, you're wrong!" is just, well, childish and dumb and from there, learns to evolve itself into a socio-democratic society. However, I will give you that this notion that all communism, even core Marx-Engels principles, being slammed as evil is shallow and is more or less the result of Americana discrimination from Stalinistic and Kruschevistic policies that fueled the Cold War. It pretty much annoys me as well because I don't believe that Marx & Engels were completely wrong in their assessment of the abuse of capitalism and every society that I've seen or read that was under communist rule was more or less the result of arrogant leadership policy rather than the collective agreement of the population as a majority but I don't believe that capitalism needs to go away entirely as it gives people a purpose to do what they do.
Really? When UN's own Food and Agricultural organisation put 66 million people in Central and Latin America underfed.
Underfed does not mean "scavenging for food" and being near starvation.
There are few truly destitute nations in the Western Hemisphere, only one full blown example all in all which as I mentioned is Haiti.
Their criterias are quite relaxed too and actual number should be even more.
Relaxed criteria suggests the opposite, unless you have a totally different definition of "relaxed criteria" here.
It was far worse in early 90's
Early 90's eh? Then a big part of that reason was probably Cuba, which suffered famine conditions relating to the collapse of the USSR crashing their economy in the early 90's exactly.
Given both the percentage and numbers are worse in South and South East Asia and far far worse in Africa, but i don't know what prompt you to say that their is no food insecurity in 'Western Hemisphere'.
You are not describing basic food insecurity when you are talking about people having to scavenge. Which incidentally they did have to do in Cuba during the early 90's.

Hushing up or condemning dictators has been heavily volatile depending on circumstance and geopolitics. Meaning right or left, certain dictators have been on the West's good side at nearly random ideologically.
For what you say to be true, then Communist nations not aligned with the USSR would have to have been as heavily attacked and condemned. They were not. To the extent of it being really bad they were not even.
Yugoslavia from the start was unaligned and even hostile with the USSR, as a result it was on good terms with the West throughout the Cold War.
Meanwhile the much more left-wing radical China ended up on good terms with the West after the Sino-Soviet split. And horrible terms with the USSR and its allies.
The extent of this being very negative I mentioned? Was that the West ended up coddling the Khmer Rouge itself to a degree, because the Khmer communists were Chinese allies and enemies of the Vietnamese communists (who were Russian aligned). Both China and the West played stupid with much of the Khmer Rouge activities and even kept recognizing them as the government of Cambodia for awhile after the Vietnamese threw them out of power and installed a pro-Vietnamese regime.
And that's all Cold War talk. In the modern world this ideological element is totally irrelevant. Cuba is the last semi-communist country on earth. As China, Laos, and Vietnam are all capitalist dictatorships by now. And North Korea is some sort of nightmare gumbo of authoritarian government styles and ideas that only partly includes communism by this point.
Oil sheiks are treated as they are because uh, oil. Not "being right wing". Absolute monarchy and Wahabbism are (surprise!) actually not popular with the modern right-wing in the West, so pretty sure there's really very little ideological match up with the Saudis and anyone much else out there.
Who then are the left wing dictators outside of Raul Castro anyway? There's a bunch of actually pretty right-wing dictators like Putin who are inexplicably popular with a certain sort of leftist. But yeah, Putin is not by the remotest stretch of the imagination left-wing.
I am not supporting any ideology.I distrust dogmatic people very much. Growing up in a communist run state taught me the perils of it.
What state.
And as for life experience, you started this conversation in response to Maxterdexter, who is heavily experienced in Latin American far-left politics running his country.
.I just don't like this cliche reaction of communist being 'so evil' and liberals being 'so righteous' when none of them came anywhere closer to make a perfect society.
People have been attacking dictatorship and authoritarian policy. So happens that Castro traded in those things. Marxism is not inherently authoritarian (Leninism however is). So in what way are these attacks even ABOUT communist vs liberal economics?
So if you have read Orwell's 1984, this won't be strange news
Sure, but i had to bring up a nation which began with similar sentiment, since problem with you people is a dictator is only dictator as long as he is leftist/communist;the sheikhs and dummies of this world are all excused.
Plenty of people call out non-communist dictators. How many communist dictators even still exist?
Looks like the biggest fusion power research lab might be falling on hard times because of Brexit.

I get that Mike Pence is a bigot, and the church is obviously also run by bigots, but I'm not really seeing the cause and effect relationship there. How are the actions of the church Pence's fault?
I've seen churches discriminate for many, many reasons, and I'm 90% sure that there's nothing stopping anyone (at least here in NY) from discriminating against others in church.

In 2015, Indiana Republicans passed a series of discriminatory laws that targeted the LGBTQ community. Signed by then Gov. Mike Pence — now the vice president-elect — the anti-LGBTQ Religious Restoration Freedom Act gives individuals and businesses the right to discriminate on religious grounds.
Pence said earlier this year that religious freedom was more important than the rights of LGBTQ people, noting in a State of the State address that “no one should ever fear persecution because of their deeply held religious beliefs.”
Proof is in the pudding as they say.

I don't think that excuses them from engaging in open discrimination.

It's not an excuse, it's reality. We basically turn a blind eye to any discrimination that occurs "on holy ground".

But Im not sure how all the process works.

Simple if you have money you can drag out court cases for years or toss a bit hush money to end an investigation or settle out of court.
Today in "Fuck you, 2016":
Austria is going to vote (again) if they prefer a green president or a neo-nazi president
Italy is having a referendum about constitutional amendments, but because of the PM's shenanigans, a "no" could lead to the fall of the government, a new European banking crisis and the future election of a party that will pull Italy out of the Euro.

Austria will have its neo-nazi president 4 life and Italy will crash Europe and Italy itself to massive banking crisis…Italy will leave eurozone.
Why? Because Populism+ general elections = Fuck you
I guess most people need to taste the real deal to know how, mind my french, retard that choice was.

They never learn in iran even after 8 years of ahmadinejad he can get atleast 20% votes
Austria will have its neo-nazi president 4 life
Nope, Van der Bellen - the green one - has won almost certainly as it stands. Let's see if the FPÖ - the right wing party - will dispute this result again…
Yes the far-right guy lost.

Thank god, really glad to hear this. Still, him getting 46% of the vote is worrisome. Lets hope the left is waking up after brexit and Trump and we can stop this nationalist right-wing populist wave. Populism is the name of the game now and the centre-left establisments need to realise that and appeal to this.

Interesting quote, In the end, it's about the policies and concerns raised which aren't taken seriously on the left.

In the end its about populists being across the board con artists promising economic aid that they promptly turn into cronyism and upper class welfare, because the center right has turned a segment of the population into self harming crazy people voting against their own interests.
The President of Austria is a ceremonial post, so it doesn't have any bearing on policy whatsoever.
EDIT: Italy has voted no. Renzi is history.
@Bilbo:

Still sends a message. Much in the same way that having a purely decorative swastika on your lawn does.
The president of Austria can dissolve parliament and call for new elections, which is what the FPO guy most certainly would've done.

Meanwhile, Army Corps says "No" to the DAPL.
I stumbled across this last night.
At 3:05, tell me if thats right and not racist.
Do you not know what "Black Power" actually means and what its history is.

He doesn't know what "Ben Shapiro" means either.
So anyway, Italy voted No and the PM is resigning.
My family seems to complain about everything with the current government, is it going to get better?
Probably. At least it will hasten the collapse of the EU.

Dakota Access Pipeline to be rerouted
Celebrations, tears of joy, chanting and drumming rang out among thousands of protesters at the Standing Rock site after the Army Corp of Engineers announced it will look for an alternate route for the Dakota Access Pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota.
So its over?… not quite yet.
"I'm really happy that I'm here to witness it and celebrate with a lot of my elders and the youth, but I think that we also need to keep in mind that we need to be ready to keep going," said protester Morning Star Angeline Chippewa-Freeland.
"We are asking our supporters to keep up the pressure, because while President Obama has granted us a victory today, that victory isn't guaranteed in the next administration," Dallas Goldtooth, lead organizer for the Indigenous Environmental Network, said in a statement. "More threats are likely in the year to come, and we cannot stop until this pipeline is completely and utterly defeated, and our water and climate are safe."
And they got a reason for the cynical view. The article has comments from the corporations behind the pileline and even from dofus Paul Ryan.
Jesus christ. And reading the comment section doesn't help either

Alright people… how about making a new thread for this instead of taking over the Random News thread.
That is, if there isn't already a racism thread then it should be moved there.

May as well try to find it. With the way news is going and stuff it could easily be resurrected. Again with the statement about being nice about it.
It's very hard not to reply back to people on those topics…

Racism: What defines it?
Last post was July 2014. With how much people's talking about racism in various threads, even highjacking this one, perhaps the talk should be moved there …. or create a new thread.
Frankly reading the fist post there makes it sound like a good thread for this talk.
Mods? Is it possible to move it there?
Anyone else think that a racism thread will be a cesspool that will result in the eventual absorption of the entire forum?
No? Just me? Okay.
Edit: Oh, we already had one. Yeah.. I guess so.
