I'm loving this flashback. Honestly this arc felt too much packed in. It already feels like a separate arc from Dressrosa. I care more about law than I do about the people trapped. Oh well.
Chapter 764: "White Monster"
-
-
Awww, Corazon, why are you so darn adorkable? I'll miss you.
-
I see one way of having Corazon being an undercover Marine actually pan out quite well. Doflamingo is basically a mob boss, with the whole don't spill the blood of the family. Doflamingo has an attachment to his brother, especially being related by blood. Doflamingo will feel betrayed that his own brother works for the people that have been after him, so for betraying family, he must die. Basically what happens when someone is discovered undercover in this sort of situation.
I still really wished Corazon didn't talk. Seems like a missed opportunity. He still could've been part of the Marines, but I feel that him being mute was a nice touch.
-
Oda has really delivered on why Law owes Cora so much. And in just 3 - no, 2 chapters.
The doctors were really cruel, but I guess it also shows the misconception about Law's illness and that proper info regarding the disease isn't being spread. Not really the World Gov.'s fault cause they didn't directly cause it, but they didn't inform the world about it either. That's assuming they know it isn't contagions, like the Family does.
-
I'm not a big fan of Law but this brought the feels, and Oda has done an amazing job making me love Corazon in only a couple chapters
Yeah this chapter really delved into the tragedy of Law's past. I can hear the fanboys calling Law4nakama. I'm such a fan of everything that happened in the chapter. Rocianante is gonna be to Law what Shanks was to Luffy. Except he's gonna lose his life and not just his arm. Corazon being a double agent was one I did not even consider by a long shot. Sick surprise Oda. I think I'll go pore over the One Piece Film Z photo of the marines and see if Rocianante's in there.
-
Excellent chapter.
So Amber Lead syndrome = Ebola?
The way Law was seen by the doctors is how people see the African people…

You just contradicted yourself there. Since they didn't tell the truth about the illness, they are responsible for the hysteria over the Amber Syndrome. In fact the other chapter said that the WG helped the rulers of the White City cover it up.
-
It's not about luffy alone anymore. In the new world either you go under yonkou's wing or ally with others. Law took care of Vergo at PH, and his story with DD is too deep for luffy to take care of his problems and main enemy.
Law has to play a role in DD's defeat, and no, kick the as* of trebol doesn't count.
Arlong Park wasn't about Luffy, but he still did the ass-kicking.
Same for Kuro, Baratie, Drum, Water 7…
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Indeed but it still seems silly to me that Vergo doesn't bother to do something as basic as actually changing his name
You're talking about a chronic amnesiac.

compare this to the picture sengoku had :ninja:
!

In the Mangastream translation it seems that Corazon wants the D to cause a storm… But why?
And maybe he hasn't lied that he isn't a marine... Maybe he actually is doing his own stuff. The marines and WG try to keep it secret as well
@MJR.:
Corazon is not a Marine though he works for the Marines to keep DD in check, that's my guess and Vergo probably found that out.
Did you guys not see the intro box calling Corazon a "Commander", along with his registry picture?
-
Can someone clarify the last panel for me. Is that Corazon answering revealing he can speak to Dofla?
-
Can someone clarify the last panel for me. Is that Corazon answering revealing he can speak to Dofla?
No, it's juts Doflamingo saying that it's him.
Like if I called you, "Hey, it's me, Darkest." Or, I could say it another way: "Hey Darkest, it's me."
At least, I think so.
-
-
-
Now we know that what Law said to Doula Mongo back at the iron bridge ("D will bring forth another storm") was just to piss him off.
Maybe he made a joke about being the boogeyman and eating him too.
-
Did anyone call this already?
This chapter was freaking awesome. One of the best flashbacks ever.
Hell yeah
-
Arlong Park wasn't about Luffy, but he still did the ass-kicking.
Same for Kuro, Baratie, Drum, Water 7…
Law could even be Luffy's main pirate rival, even in present time he looks on par with Luffy. This is his story, he can't have him solve it for him, and him looking just like a damsel in distress in need of rescue.
How would Luffy feel if Law would beat akainu's azz for killing his brother?
-
Someone probably mentioned this already but,
I think next chapter, Doflamingo would try to lure Corazon by claiming that he obtained a Devil Fruit that would cure Law's illness.
It's a Trap! -
Excellent chapter.
So Amber Lead syndrome = Ebola?
The way Law was seen by the doctors is how people see the African people…
@Kyoji:
What a joke. You're so funny.
While the two are very different illnesses, its the doctors and common people's responses are similar= Many people don't understand how the illnesses are contracted, and they panic at being in same location as someone who's ill
Amber Lead - people mistakenly think its contagious, when its actually a build up of a toxin(?)/ poison
Ebola - There are people who mistakenly think breathing same air as the infected will cause them to catch it when its actually transmitted through bloodSo instead of saying the actual illness Amber Lead=Ebola, it should say the responses to them are similar
-
A couple thoughts on another great chapter:
-
Corazon doesn't specifically say that Vergo is going to infiltrate the marines so it's possible he didn't know where he was going. No idea why he didn't report Vergo's name to the Marines, though. Maybe it just never occurred to him it might be important? Corazon's not exactly the brightest guy.
-
Two years into the flashback, Sengoku says Vergo has only been a recruit for a year. At this point Law has never met him, so that means he was absent from the family for at least a year before joining the Marines. Where was he during that time (though it probably isn't important). Also, was Corazon part of the crew before Vergo left?
-
Vergo specifically requests to transfer to G5. Is this because Doflamingo plans to usurp Dressrosa at least four years in advance, because G5 has lower discipline that means less stringent observation, or another reason?
-
If "Donquijote" isn't just and Oda-English error, it's probably to conceal his relation to Doflamingo. After all, the public never figured out that Monkey D. Luffy and Monkey D. Garp were related until it was announced. A single changed letter in the surname is a top-notch alias!
-
Commander seems like a pretty low rank for a seat in Doflamingo's family. Like that's even lower than present-day Tashigi. I'm not sure if Corazon is telling Law the truth there or lying to comfort him. I can't recall a non-Marine ever reporting to an Admiral, even Cipher Pol.
-

Except this is Luffy's story. The flashback might be Law's, but Luffy is the guy who's been called the Trump Card and Fujitora has bet on.
And also the guy Usopp said will save Dressrosa. And Viola. And Riku. And Rebecca.
Notice that no one has deposited their hopes on Law.
-
Did anyone else Notice that Oda forgot to draw Rocinante's right eye tattoo/makeup in this page: (6th and 8th panels)
!
Also, why no one on the Donquixote crew say anything about Buffalo eating ice cream while counter-attacking a navy ship? Am I the only one who find this a bit odd?
-
Now we know that what Law said to Doula Mongo back at the iron bridge ("D will bring forth another storm") was just to piss him off.
Maybe he made a joke about being the boogeyman and eating him too.
And in Punk Hazard if I remember well.
-
So instead of saying the actual illness Amber Lead=Ebola, it should say the responses to them are similar
Yeah… To an extent, only. Real life doctors don't chase off their patients ; many caught the disease themselves trying to save others, in fact. That's really the part of the chapter that disturbs me the most, how every doctor they meet is portrayed as an ignorant selfish bastard.
-
Indeed but it still seems silly to me that Vergo doesn't bother to do something as basic as actually changing his name
There's where we pull the "He cannot be the only person called Vergo in the One Piece world", right
-
Maybe he wants to care but can't, so pretends he does the best way he knows how - by faking it.
Damn, that would be sad. Not being able to care even if you want to. :<
That said, he did cut off his fathers head that one time… still, we don't know if there were any extenuating reasons for it. I can think of a few reasons he could do so and still be considered not at fault or at least, not a monster (the one that jumped to mind being that his father asked him to do so, in the hopes that his children would be taken back and protected if they presented the head of the 'traitor'. Another being him forced into it to prove that he isn't a 'traitor' like his father. Maybe thinking it's the only way to protect himself and his brother from the shitty situation they were in - I mean, God, he was only ten at the time and he had a younger brother relying on him. Their father tried but he just couldn't protect them so I could see someone pushed to the edge, hoping to get back to the safe place from which they came, hating the man who brought them down and made them worse than animals in the eyes of not only their peers, but also the people they once ruled over, causing the death of his beloved mother... Again, he was only 10 at the time, I could see that kind of situation just pushing him over the edge.)
-
Marvelous Chapter.
If Vergo would have found the Picture of Cora, in Sengokus Desk, Law would be a lot more angry about Vergo, then just for being "pretty much thrashed". Doffy would call Cora and appoint him back to his Family with a lie, that he have a Cure for Laws illness. He kills his own Brother and Law, right after he cut Vergo, on Punk Hazard, in many Pieces, would send the last words to Vergo like .."And this was for Cora-San..". But we read Corazons Name in front of the Colloseum for the first Time. I think that Doffy calls his Brother for a reason that noone, or just a few of us, would expect. Its Oda. :) -
There's where we pull the "He cannot be the only person called Vergo in the One Piece world", right
Even then Rocinante should have given some description of crewmembers! Appearance, voice, the little thing that he tends to get food stuck on his cheek, that kind of things.
-
The question here is, do Flamingo knows that Law is a D?

I completely agree, but this is Oda If he intents to address this incident he will do it in a way where only Darth (I love this guy, no homo) wouldn't agree with it
-

He must know by now. Probably Law will tell him himself after Doffy kills Cora. Or at leats I think that.
He willl say something about the strom that the D. will bring in the future
-
As revealed in spoiler thread by Warp Predator:
Behold! Bartolomeo's father.
-
I don't get it, what so "evil" was in that scene with Doffy? It was weird to hear such words from a kid, but it was natural reaction. Even if this scene was to show some kind of "starting point" of Doffy becoming a monster, i think it's not a good one.
-
!
any relation gentlemen?
someone already pointed that out on tumblr:ninja:

They probably stole from this site. ^^;

There wasn't any. Seems Rocinante isn't very trustworthy in terms of exposition. At least I hope. If we're supposed to see Dofla born evil, that would be stupid. Because Dofla feeling that way is actually very human.
-
-
But Law already took down most valuated Doula's subordinate, and almost took down another high executive, while Luffy, well he hasn't defeated any member of the family yet, and since Law is fighting the real and extremely dangerous one while Luffy is fighting that weakling from Jaya and the clon that can even-be-handled-by-jeet and abdullah.
soo I would say it's more likely for Law to get wrecked(again) and Luffy to raise up and fight the big boss by himself
-

Well, you have a different reaction from Rosinante, who was in the same predicament. And it wasn't just what he was saying, it was what he was implying as well. He wasn't just going to kill them, he's implying that he's going to make their deaths as ugly as possible. (At least, that's how I interpret his words). I think that was what Oda was trying to get at rather than Doflamingo just saying he was going to get revenge.
-
Easy. Vergo intercepted the report. Just like he did with all those missing children reports.
Roci said he was gonna write the details. A letter, I guess.
I doubt he had the power and the influence to intercept classified reports to Fleet Admiral at that time. Not as a year old rookie.
-
It would be cool If Oda started doing that gag with the police running after thief or better yet If that thief turns out to be Pandaman.
[hide][/hide] -
Who's the blonde guy in the ColorSpread??
-
-
Apparently he did and now I'm on Darth side as to why the heck he will keep it a sercret
It takes strength to resist the Darth side. Only the weak embrace it!
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Can't you see that's Sabo.
Thought it was Rocinante.
Blue Gilly?

Best arc so far for me
-
Who's the blonde guy in the ColorSpread??
Which colorspread? Fan pictures?
I just looked at the colorspread and I saw that warning poster on left side.. Then I looked back on how they actually looks like, hahah. -
Why didn't Roci used his soundproof ability to silence then doctors and threatens they with his position as an executive?
-
Easy. Vergo intercepted the report. Just like he did with all those missing children reports.
Yes, yes, let's go with that.

A natural reaction would be crying and screaming in pain and fear, not swearing revenge and an ugly death to everyone involved.
That's the kind of stuff you expect from obviously mad/evil villains before they die laughing in the fire/guillotine/high fall/melting/lightning bolt/space-time portal and either come back as a vengeful spirit or cause an evil curse to befall the villagers.
Also, humans can be evil and monsters.

I know, but I can't remember from which arc though

So is the flashback saying people are born good/evil? Because that's not how humans work. If that's what it's supposed to be implying here, it's pretty terrible writing.
