RE: Chapter 1,049: The World That Should Be
Luffy does not literally have cartoon powers. People took one phrase from fans and ran with it.
Apologies, I thought I might have taken things too far, should have given it a bit more thought before posting. I removed it and will reconsider my ideas.
RE: Chapter 1,045: Next Level
It's probably another reference to old cartoon characters.
I really like that idea, haha. I had to throw on some quick colors. Tried for an old-timey film grain on Luffy. Didn't come through super good, but I kinda like it.
(Though I think Oda made him all white to primarily contrast with darkness Blackbeard, probably…)
RE: Chapter 1,045: Next Level
Luffy was already at his normal size after Kaido blast breathed him…
But I don't think his giant form should limit his speed and fighting style anyway. We've already seen that Oars was quite fast when he had Luffy's shadow.
I think he maintained a large form until he pulled his head out of the dome. You can see in the subsequent panel he's larger than Kaidou.
Also, I posted this in the spoilers thread, but just wanted to reiterate that I've been enjoying Luffy's new form and powers. Not a fan of the rubber fruit being the nika fruit, but otherwise I like how he's using his powers. I feel like Luffy is still discovering what he's capable of.
RE: One Piece: Age of Pirates Tabletop RPG
My friends and I are playing the game on this system and we noticed something. In our opinion, Marksmans 1lv Guns feature is very powerful because it shoots easy hit on everyone and there is no limit. For example, easy hit will hit people who are stronger and stronger than themselves.
So sorry, just now seeing this… probably too late, but thought I'd respond anyway.
To clarify, Guns feature lets you automatically hit enemies that have the Easy Hit difficulty. It doesn't make every enemy have the Easy hit difficulty. So, for example, this feature doesn't do anything against enemies that are Hard Hit difficulty. Let me know if you need me to clear that up further.
RE: Chopper's forms
The original English name "Raftel" was essentially a "best guess" on the part of the translators based on how the island's name is written in Japanese (which uses the strictly phonetic katakana, rather than kanji that would have meaning built in). We only got clarification that it was intended to be "Laugh Tale" with the Stampede movie and then the manga itself some time later, more than 20 years into the series. The way it's spelled and pronounced in Japanese never changed.
There have been hints over time that "Raftel" wasn't right (notably in the lyrics to Bink's Sake), but presumably they were resistant to changing the established spelling until it became absolutely clear that they had to - the same reason Zoro is still officially "Zolo" in the English manga.
Not ideal, but it happens from time to time, particularly for older and/or long-running series that haven't always taken the foreign market into account. The infamous "Band of the Hawk" from Berserk should have more rightly been translated as the "Band of the Falcon", but the other name was too well established to change by the time that became clear. Similarly, there's a character in "A Certain Magical Index" that was known both officially and unofficially by the name "Laura Stuart" for a good 40 light novels and two seasons of anime (at the time - three now), only for it to eventually become very, VERY plot relevant that her name was actually "Lola Stuart" the entire time.
Thank you very much, that clears things up for me. Kind of unfortunate, as you said, that the actual name of arguably the most important island in the series was never fully communicated between Oda/Editors and the translation teams. But I guess the word "Raftel" didn't show up that often for the majority of the series anyway.
I do have a second dumb question as well – just something I don't fully grasp. I'm attaching a scanlation note from chapter 968:
I don't know how to check the veracity of these translation claims. Anyone know if they are accurate? And if the true meaning of One Piece is supposedly "The Great Hidden Treasure of One Peace", is it possible Oda meant "One Peace" all along, and Piece was a mistake? I believe Oda has had some mistakes in the past when he spelled things specifically in english. It's just a bit worrisome for me that the name of the actual series might be unintentionally incorrect.
A side note – from reading 968, it also isn't super clear to me the origin of the name One Piece in reference to the treasure. Apparently the world as a whole started calling it that, but for no clear apparent reason? I don't have the actual official translation on hand, so I don't know if I'm just missing something there.
Thanks again for the help.
RE: Chopper's forms
Apologies for the dumb question, I don't know if this has been clarified anywhere.
Pertaining to Raftel/Laugh Tale. Do we know for a certainty what the current people of the One Piece world call the final island? Do they say Laugh Tale, or do they say Raftel, a kind of degradation of the original name, kind of like how Gol D. became Gold?
If everyone has actually been saying Laugh Tale this whole time, was there just some kind of miscommunication with the official translation? Did Japanese readers read it as "Laugh Tale"? Or did Oda/Editors intentionally try to hide the actual translation for some kind of big reveal? It seems to me like a weird thing to hide, considering Laugh Tale doesn't really mean that much more to us than Raftel does… I don't know, it seems any way you slice it, something just feels off.
Thanks, if anyone can help me understand.
