For those interested, the BBC reports:
Clever techies launch a Google maps widget that allows people to search for their loved ones or get updates on the situation across Japan, as reported by ZDnet.
Since we're on a new page, I just thought I'd repeat one more time:
If anyone has AT&T U-Verse TV, they decided to broadcast/unlock Japan TV, the National Japanese News Station for Free because of this horrible incident. It's on Channel 3680 for anyone who wants to watch and follow the unfolding situation in Japan.
Listening to CNN… They reported that there is still a nuclear meltdown threat. Could someone shed some light into this? I thought the nuclear meltdown issues were already resolved?
I believe they got the first one under control, unfortunately a second reactor has begun to overheat.
Can I stop anymore unknowing posters right now by saying the good people of mangastream forums have information that Oda, Kishi and Kubo are all okay despite not being on the aforementioned mangaka/artists list. Sorry if it annoys people that I'm singling out these guys purely on their line of work, but I hope this will stop the questions and sharp replies. Seriously, let's just put some minds at easy now, even if only a little.
Stay strong Japan.
Prayers and condolences for our comrades in Japan. Stay strong.
My heart goes out to the people effected by this, stay strong all of you!
Our podcast along with many others will be holding a 24 hour podcast on Saturday and Sunday March 19th and 20th to raise money for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. For those interested in donating, listening in, or helping out, here's the link:

Cool thank you
anyone know if any other place than Japan got hit by the tsunami?
Well, this was a huge catastrophe and Japan needs to stay strong in this moment of horror, they need to overcome this serious situation. And condolences for them.
Oy, yeah, just a little and unimportant curiosity I remembered about Sendai: I remembered Araki was born there, but I don't know if he still lives there.
Donated.
Also, I've been trying to listen to the news all day at work, but all I know is that CA was either not hit by a tsunami or that we were hit but they weren't that big.
The areas are evacuated, but some idiots are still trying to surf to catch the waves. :getlost:
EDIT: We were hit by a surge of waves with some boats and a pier destroyed, but other than that we're fine.
Anyone else with news?
host sister + baby are apparently fine and at their house. couldn't understand the entire message though, because it was on my mom's answering machine and she played it for me through her cell phone (and it was in japanese).

I'm really glad to hear that CCC!
I hope everyone else trying to contact with their relatives or friends get good news soon also.
Any word on what's happening in Hokkaido?
There's good reason to be worried about all of them, since none have the same sophisticated infrastructures as Japan, so even much smaller waves and shocks can cause as much damage.
Tare_chan – our thoughts and hopes are with you and our other Indonesian AP folks too! Take care and be safe.
Um, yeah actually Taiwan does. It's a fully developed country like Japan.
that´s how it goes. americans love themselves too much and have no mercy on you when shit happens on you that nobody could control. but when shit happens on them it´s all.
Look at me! this is horrible, sympathize with me. i have done nothing to deserve this.
only when it affects them. you´ll see them stopping with jokes and offer moral support.
i even saw someone making a kanye west joke.
it went something along the lines of this
_
Yo Japan. I'm really happy for you and imma let you finish, but Haiti had one of the best earthquakes of all time, OF ALL TIME!_
ugh
Are you really this fucking dumb, to make this post, really.
Im still having no luck contacting 2 of my friends there. -_-
Really hope they're okay.
That Kanye West joke is pretty funny…
Now, I feel for them and all, but seeing those videos...and all that rubble and stuff in the water...It's kinda cool...
Of course, this happens just when I DON'T have $50 to donate.

Do you honestly not expect people to think you're an asshole for this?

They're still saying the connection is problematic in some areas, so please try to be patient. I hope both of your friends are safe.
I'm glad that Japan is already used and well developed for these earthquakes. The thing that could really kill and devestate are those tsunamis, and they could really drown and destroy hundreds maybe thousand.
Tsunami already hit over here in the Philippines, but they are weak and we literally didn't feel it. I'm much worried that anytime this kind of earthquake could hit our country anytime because of major plate just beside us and even a plate just below the capital region. If this happened to us, who knows in earth what will happened to us, maybe much much worse than our Post-WW2 status.
Well I'm glad GREG and Oda are okay, that's good news
hope everyone's family and friends are god too, hell I hope that for all of japan
@Robo:

It's the internet. I'm not gonna meet any of you in real life (I hope not). So people can think I'm an asshole. In fact, I EXPECT them to.
It's weird that I had to hear about it in Geometry..And not even really caring. I thought it was just another earthquake…Didn't hear about the tsunami.

Why would you say stuff like this you disgusting asshole. Some of the people here have friends and family down there. You should think before you say this stuff.
Yes, you saying things people can interpret foul has no bearing on anyone else, only yourself, so the fact that you'll never meet anybody online means you can say whatever you want. Because it's all about you!
I mean I can understand being amazed at all the destruction, I can imagine it being very horrible and seem crazy. It's not like you're being massively offensive, it's just that you had to go and say WHATEVER IM AN ASSHOLE and not give a fuck. You just have a great lack of way-with-words, not knowing what not to say.
Thank you for Sniper King for those very stupid words.
Now leave, please.
Still no news about my grandma. I appreciate those of who have given your condolences. There's little else that can be done. My mom isn't freaking out exactly but I know she is distressed by this and there's nothing I can do. I don't want to give up hope but she lives in Sendai not too far from the ocean, and she's also very old. It's really the not knowing which is the worst. I'm somewhat relieved to hear that others in this thread have confirmed the safety of friends/family though.
On another note, shut the hell up all you goddamn fuckers who keep coming in this thread to make tasteless, insensitive jokes or have this "Who gives a shit" attitude just because you aren't personally affected. If you don't care, fine, just don't go parading around in here announcing to everyone what an asshole you are. I honestly don't know which is more upsetting to me at the moment: the unknown status of my grandma or the blatant insensitivity.

If you don't have anything good to say.
Then don't fucking TALK!
Seriously dude your a prick… I know you don't care what people on the internet think, but were not just on the internet. We are real people in the world just like you. So are the people effected by the Earthquake. Just cause you don't know them or us, doesin't mean you treat them like sh*t.
If you're offended, I wouldn't even respond.
@tokyoreporter: NTV says that Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Reactor is possibly melting down (that's literal translation).
This is getting crazy.
Fuck, Sniper King, you're probably not well liked IRL huh?
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/radiation-leaks-at-japan-quake-hit-nuclear-plant-2011-03-12
I was reading that and here's an interesting thing I found…
The U.S. Coast Guard was searching for a person who was swept out to sea in Norther California.
That's crazy…California too, huh? Sure glad I'm not there anymore...
And I guess the death toll is 1,200...
And no, I don't think I'm liked IRL either...Eh.
I could barely survive the 7.2 earthquake in SoCal/Baja, I couldn't sleep for days and I am sure it is a lot more worse for the poor people of Japan affected by the earthquake. I can't imagine going through such a huge one.
Those of magnitude 6 and below don't scare me as much anymore, though. Anyone who's never felt an earthquake in their lives sure is lucky. It's a scary thing. You get used to it, but it doesn't matter if you've lived through earthquakes your whole life when you go through one of such immense magnitude.
Shut up Sniper King. And get out.
@Gorgeous:
Shiiiiiiiiit. I've got a teacher and a friend from Japanese class over there. I know they're okay but nuclear stuff kinda terrifies me… Does anyone know if stopping it is possible?
One of the articles I read said this.
"Japanese nuclear officials said pressure inside a boiling water reactor at the plant was running much higher than normal after the cooling system failed."
"Officials said they might need to deliberately release some radioactive steam to relieve pressure, but that there would be no health risk."

Thanks for this! :D
The natural disasters are getting worse and worse.. and they're becoming more frequent. This is a time for all of us to think about life and death, and the time we waste in our lives on trivial matters. About the money we waste on useless garbage when we could be giving to help those less fortunate than we are.
Life is precious. Every time a natural disaster happens, we must take time out to reflect upon the purpose of our lives, the manner we live our lives. I believe every time something like this happens, it's a reminder from God to tell us that contrary to what we think, we cannot live forever, and every one of us has a ticket scheduled to depart from this life. Let us all make this news count, and let's all change something of ourselves for the better. Whether it be treating strangers with kindness, donating to a cause without stinginess, or treating our parents and family with more love.
My heart goes out to those of you with family and friends in Japan (EDIT: And other affected areas), I hope you hear good news from them soon.
This is:
why I fucking hate niggas.Stupid as fuck.
This made me laugh though:
Idiots.lol oh internet
This shit is embarrassing as a black male…
@CCC:
May I ask how you got involved with that? Was it through a specific organization? People on my school's anon message board are already talking about organizing a volunteer-based relief team to send over during the upcoming spring break, but I'd have no idea where to even begin.
I was working at a "labor dispatch" part-time job.
(Which apparently seemed to be owned by the yakuza lol)
During that time, in 95, all of the works were relief effort related.
Carrying rubble out of collapsed train station, providing air conditioners to relief tents housed by victims who lost their homes, transporting construction equipments, etc, etc.
've been following this at work, they have it on the news in the breakroom, and CNN.com is allowed past the internet filter, so I've been refreshing the page all the time to check it.
This is just truly horrifying. Seriously, after the devastation that recently hit Australia and now this?
Japan got hit the worst, but Alaska, California, and Hawaii at least have all also been hit with more minor effects of the same quake.
What is going on the Pacific?! After what happened in Australia and now this, it really looks like the Pacific is just somewhat imploding in on itself or something…
This is truly terrible, let's just hope that they can get out of this without the death toll going up anymore.
Also, about the whole "Stupid insensitive people coming in to ask if Oda is ok, etc". Someone might wana add the facebook quote thing from Greg into the first post, that'll stop any more stupidity if they can read it all in the first post without having to look.
My dad who is in Tokyo just called, he said he's fine.
That's good to hear.

There's a difference between thinking you're an asshole for making moronic comments and thinking you're a slobbering ape of a moron for making moronic comments.
Looking at Japan's strength I know everything will be back to normal.
What is going on the Pacific?! After what happened in Australia and now this, it really looks like the Pacific is just somewhat imploding in on itself or something…
It's called the ring of fire. It's been this way before you or I were ever on this planet.
@Gorgeous:
Shiiiiiiiiit. I've got a teacher and a friend from Japanese class over there. I know they're okay but nuclear stuff kinda terrifies me… Does anyone know if stopping it is possible?
Long story short yes, but it will require releasing radiation and possibly radioactive material. The cooling system has failed, they can't pump the coolant in. Therefore the rods will keep on heating, catch fire, burn through their casings, burn through the concrete and eventually explode. IF they don't vent the aforementioned "radioactive steam" to reduce pressure. I was reading some reports that said more than a thousand times increase in radiation was detected in that area. There are 6 all together, iirc 4 are operationally sound, 1 was stabilised and 1 is about to go kaboom. If it does fail, the other 5 are likely to go along with it, and then we are all fucked. Nuclear power is incredibly important and the way forward but I just don't get why countries that are on major fault lines are allowed to build them.
And safe "radioactive stream" made me lol so hard.
It's called the ring of fire. It's been this way before you or I were ever on this planet.
Michael Palin made a fun documentary touring it for the BBC I think. It might be available on youtube.
