Is the Ice Hunter Arc filler needed? Or is this something I can skip?
You can skip all filler. :P
If you mean "Is it good enough to watch by it's own merits" then….possibly.
It has good things in it and bad things in it.
You should skip all filler, except the half-filler episodes

G8's good though. Worth watching even if you skip all the other filler.
Ice Hunter was very "meh"
Better than Rainbow Mist. Not as good as G8.
If you're reading this correctly, then yes, even Rainbow Mist is better than Apis.
Apis was gold compared to the Mexican arc. And given that it was also twice as long as the Mexican arc, that's saying something.

Mexican Arc? What arc was that?
I'd rate Apis as better than both Amigo Pirates/Rainbow Mist arcs.
@Master:

Episode 426-429. That "movie tie-in" shit.
@Master:

The recent Movie 10 fillers. Turned out to be a wash because it turned out to be barely connected to Movie 10, brought out the worst of One Piece filler formula, and just didn't live up to expectations. The final episode was fairly decent though, I thought.
I disliked the Ice Hunter arc.
after all the trouble they had overcomming CP9. These ice-sports themed dingbats give the crew a decent run for their money?
F-that.
Best part of the arc is Usopp NAILING the figure skater chick in the face with an exploding star buy supposed accident and Sanji flipping out. Got a belly laugh from me.
The Phoenix pirates annoyed me greatly
Yeah, I'd skip it. G8 is the only good filler arc.
skipp it g8 the only one worth watching
Am I really the one who likes the Warship Island/Apis arc? The first time around, I didn't care for it and thought it made no sense, but after re-watching it on DVD, I actually enjoy it. And about Ice Hunters… It's standard filler. Not bad, not great. Here's how I'd rank the filler arcs:
1.G8-Almost as good as canon.
2.Ocean's Dream-Short, sweet, and to the point.
3.Spa Island-Don't have much to say, except I liked it and it had fanservice.:P
4.Warship Island-Not bad at all. Only real problem was the timing.
5.Ice Hunters-Nothing special, aside from Don Achino and his DF powers.
6.Post-Alabasta/Rainbow Mist/Goat Sex-…Seriously?
7.Amigo Pirates-Awful, awful, awful shit. The only filler arc I couldn't finish.
The only ones you "can't Skip" are Apis and KINDA G8 because they're fused into the main plot (you can KINDA Skip G8 if you stop the episode right before they fall out of the sky, and pick up while they're back in the air later)
Apis is fused in with entering the Grand Line, so you unfortunately have to watch it.
Most other filler is decent. Not on par with the main plot, but semi-watchable…
Then there's the movie 10 Tie in filler arc...
BOSSU! BOSSU! BOSSU!! BOSSU!!!
..........
I didn't skip any of the episodes because I knew once I caught up to the current one I would only go back and watch the ones I skipped while waiting for new ones. So I said I might as well watch them all in order.
Ice Hunter Arc was okay, I certainly don't think it was a waste of time to watch. I like seeing the characters and the story be it canon or filler. I do this with every series. I'm just to curious to skip anything.
If it ends up being bad it just makes me laugh and if it's good well, it was good. =]
Edit:The only thing that bothered me a little that I can remember to this day about One Piece filler is the Zoro cutting steel thing before he knew how to. :/
Oh man. I'm indifferent about Ice Hunter.
But Movie 10 Fillers? Screw that noise.
EVERY. SINGLE. FILLER. CLICHE.
Annoying little kid.
Annoying little kid hates pirates because pirates did something bad.
Plotholes (How come Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji didn't get burned?)
BOSSU BOSSU BOSSU BOSSU BOS slaps self
SLOW AS SHIT PACE!
Everything about it sucked.
Though I'll agree that the Movie 10 filler arc sucked ass, I still liked the animation for Luffy vs. that net guy (don't care to remember his name). Guess I'm just a sucker for Tate's style. XD
Yep, that final episode by Tate almost made the previous suckitude worth it. Almost. A well-animated fight, and some nice fanservice in the form of Shiki himself making a speaking cameo and the key Arlong arc series being redone.
Well here my rundown of em
*Apis/Warship Island (I actually liked this one. Apis turned out to be pretty useful in the long run and the Marine ship battles were well done.)
*Post Alabasta Eps (wasn't anything special. Nice to get some more back story on Zoro though)
*Goat Island (Pretty good, nothing special)
*Rainbow Mist (Bleh though I did like the twist at the end)
*G8 (Excellent, very Oda written. Especially like the fact that there no "boss" villain. Just trying to get out without getting captured. The doctor girl was pretty cute too and loved Jessica and Drake.)
*Davy Back Fight Add Ons: (Ugh very unnecessary. I can understand they needed to buy Oda some time to get on with Water 7 but this was just handled too sloppy. Save for changing the boat race and the roller derby, the additional games were way too uncreative. Like they came up with anything.)
*Ocean Dream: (Pretty good mainly cause it just deal with the crew themselves plus gives Robin some spotlight time. The seahorse villain, meh)
*Foxy Returns (Skip it till you reach Aokiji)
*Post Water 7: (Not bad really. Worth a watch at least)
*Ice Hunters: (Mmm so-so, if it was just the Straw Hats vs the Bounty Hunter then it would've been alright. The Phoenix Pirates didn't really contribute to anything really.)
*Spa Island: (Short and sweet, which is good enough for me. The girl characters weren't that bad actually. Didn't care much for the Brook ep though)
*Little East Blue: (Bleh standard One Piece "save the village" story. The fight with Largo the only real saving grace. The annoying thing about this arc is that they could've went somewhere with it but seem like they gave up in the middle of it. Bleh)
In addition any ep that takes place in the alt Feudal era is cool by me too. Puts a great spin on things and always fun to see characters we don't see much of in the manga.

I love all those episodes!! Along with G8, they're the best filler.
As for all the other arcs. My views pretty much match everyone elses. Though I do have to say, villain wise, Largo is my favorite, plus his df was cool.

Pretty much this.
I've often thought about going through those episodes and counting how many times that girl shouted "BOSSU!" but then I realized I'd have to watch it again…. Shivers
Why does Toei FOR SOME REASON think that in order to make a proper Filler arc, one needs a "Gutsy Little Kid who (usually) hates Pirates" to take center stage?
Oda has NEVER Made a character like that. The closest he's ever come to it was Aisa, and he was smart enough to keep her importance to the plot of Skypiea VERY low. She's only there to have someone to lead Luffy to Enel.
But for SOME fucking reason, Toei can't help but make filler with annoying fucking little kids. I remember I was at their panel at AX, when someone asked who did the filler. The Room let them know we liked G8.
G8 did NOT have a Gutsy little fucking kid. You think MAYBE they woulda taken the hint... but no...

But Rin, you see, we are americans, a place where One Piece hasnt exactly recieved the warmest of receptions….
RIN:GRRRRRRRRRR!(Deathglare)
Aegis:But you are right anyway!
Rin:"smiles"
I kinda liked the goat island filler. It had no kids, and I kinda related to the old guy cuz my grandpa had just died. I still wonder if he's alive.
I liked some of the post-Alabasta filler. The Robin and Chopper episode was pretty cute.
I actually really like the Davy Backfight filler as well.
That said, the rest is really meh, which is a shame because I get bored watching an anime where the only good episodes are canon and I already know what's going to happen.
G8 is good, Oceans Dream is worth watching just for Usopp's legendary commentary of Zoro's fight.
The rest I'd give a miss.
Some of the one-of filler episodes aren't too bad.
Brook's getting used to life on the ship after Thiller Bark.
And the infamous 'he's cleaning our floors, that bastard!' with Zoro.
The additional Davy Back games were ok also.
Is the Ice Hunter Arc filler needed? Or is this something I can skip?
To answer your question, I….
…....I wan to hug them….
AHEM! Filler is never NECESSARY to watch, but they make for great character development and scenes.
Which one was G8? Was that the one after Skipea with Robin pretending to be a marine, Chopper pretending to be a doctor, and Luffy showing his expert stealth skills in the prison?

Were the sand pirates of Alabastre filler? I seriously skipped that when my sister and I were watching Funimation OP.
I've been thinking about the fillers… In my opinion, most of them really sucks, the Rainbowmist and the Apis arc were pure shit. Not to mention the "Lost memory" arc, the G-8, Ice Hunters... sigh, they're all crap.:getlost:
And then I see the cover stories in the manga, there are only two or three of them that were actually put in the anime (Buggy, Coby and Straw Hat separation serial)...
My question is, why Toei have to make a shitty filler arc when they can use the cover stories wich are much much better? I'd love to see the CP9 Independent Report animated, or the Gedatsu accidental life... I think they're far more interesting...
Whenever a canon arc finish I think to myself "Oh Crap, another filthy filler arc", so Why don't they start with a filler arc chosen from the cover stories, that would be far far better?
Is there anyone who actually enjoy the filler arcs?
I have learned to accept the 3,4, or 5 episode filler arcs
Just imagine having to go through a full string a shitty ones that last 80 episodes like in Naruto or a long shitty one that lasts A YEAR like bleach
I do agree that they should do more cover stories but maybe they are a little scared off going too off-canon when a lot of these cover stories are actually related to the main story itself, the last thing they want is to screw up something in the filler that affects the canon story later on…

I would like to see enel's moon adventures.
This question is brought up a lot. Someone actually asked Toei this at Anime Expo 2007, around the time Funimation got the license.
Basically, after the first two animated cover stories for One Piece (Buggy's side story; Coby and Helmeppo train to be Marines), the ratings for those two were really bad. The Japanese audience basically didnt' want to see One Piece without Luffy or the Strawhats. Of course, not many people realized then that the rest of the cover stories would eventually tie in to the canon story.
The concensus was, if the audience (Japanese mainly) wants cover stories to be animated in the future, they need to let Toei know. So far, it seems no one listened.

Yes they where. I have to say though: The inconvenient place in the middle of an otherwise good an interesting arc aside, those episodes weren't too bad. At least the filler kid was not a kid but a women and didn't hate pirates but princesses instead. Also <3 scarab!
And the infamous 'he's cleaning our floors, that bastard!' with Zoro.
That is one of the most hilarious scenes in any episode, even non filler. I laughed for quite a while.
Ironically the princess hating wowan filler is also quite hated…s
Was anybody else slightly reminded of Dune when they saw the sand pirate filler? Maybe I am crazy but for some reason the sand pirate reminded me of the Fremen or "Free Men." Mainly the pirates general attitude.
Also the G8 filler was entertaining and well written. I recommend watching it. Get rid of the Phoenix pirates and the Ice Hunter arc was ok (Ussop sniping the skater woman was hilarious) but it annoyed me that the strawhats had trouble beating the guys after they just had their CP9 fight.
I admit G8 is quite good, but I'm not sure whether it is THAT good, I mean I don't think it stands out from the rest that much.
and I like the concept/theory of Rainbow mist, maybe it's just my "thing" into "time-travel", but yes, Toei should have done it better.
But for SOME fucking reason, Toei can't help but make filler with annoying fucking little kids. I remember I was at their panel at AX, when someone asked who did the filler. The Room let them know we liked G8.
It's the Watson scenario.
Toei thinks that little kids need a little kid to relate to, because kids are too stupid to understand what's going on.

I find it very hard to believe that nobody wants to see CP9 go bowling.
I mean come on, CP9, bowling, it practically writes itself.
The low ratings story is 100% false. crossbones has a list of the ratings (scroll down a little), and it shows that the ratings for those particular episodes (46-47, 68-69) are on par with the other episodes' ratings at the time.
Is there anyone who actually enjoy the filler arcs?
I wish there were more filler arcs.
Not that I would watch them, but in hope that it may prevent us from getting the piss-poor pacing that we get sometimes in the canon material. I mean, the last couple of episodes of Impel Down haven't even followed the "1 chapter per episode" formula. It's ridiculous.
When we watch One Piece in the future, we can skip filler arcs. We can't skip drawn out scenes.

Well, that's good to know. Still, it was what was told by the Toei reps at their OP panel. And just because it was watched, doesn't mean it was well-received.
Still, things are looking good for future cover stories getting animated. Mainly because we now have cover stories that feature the Strawhats.
And I'd watch CP9 go bowling. I think it'd be a hilarious episode.

I don't quite get the 'lack of demand' excuse.
Why would you spend time and money making up your own (probably crap), filler arc.
When Oda has done half the work for you and it'll be more interesting (and cannon) to boot.
As much as I love the anime, this just seems like more evidence that Toei don't know their arse from their elbow.

shrug
The worse part is that they put in a lot of attention to detail in those two cover stories that they animated. Because they were in the manga, I enjoyed them a lot. But my friends who were anime only watchers didn't like to watch Coby and Helmeppo for those two episodes and wanted to skip them. They even wanted to skip the great Buggy's cover story.
I liked the Ice Hunter Arc alot. I thought the Pheonix pirates were interesting.
I liked the Fake Rebel Army episode, the Post-Arabasta Robin & Chopper Episode, the Post-Arabasta Zoro Backstory, the whole G8 Arc, the Brook episode after Thriller Bark and the Feudal Era episodes.
G8 filler was the best imo as well
I really liked the Fake Rebel Army episode. And I first saw it in the 4kids dub, so you know that's saying something.
