Haha, I watched part of the Lords debate on this when the bill was being passed … I saw this one old guy begin his lengthy, well reasoned, level headed, fairly tolerant argument against. And the whole time he was talking, there was this other old guy sitting just in the corner of the shot, just shaking his head emphatically and occasionally saying something into the ear of the person next to him. It was too funny. I couldn't keep watching.

Does the house of lords still dress like it's 1776.

Or at least act like it.

Yeah, it can be a bit like that! Though it's also a space where more expert voices are heard than the House of Commons, given that the Lords has a number of scientists, sociologists, and people who have done stuff other than being a politician and pretending that they know how everything goes better than people who actually do those things. Very few Lords have inherited titles now, so it's not aristocratic (whilst nextdoor in the Commons, we have things being run by a couple of posh boys from expensive private schools).

House of Lords traditions go wayyyyyyy back, not just to the early days of America, believe it or not. It acts in a traditional way, as does the Commons, but it's a space for genuine debate and it clearly does have an element of modernity (I mean they passed a gay marriage bill comfortably). Also, compared to the 18th century, Lords is grossly oversized. It was like 80 people back then and it's something like 600 now.

Also, throwing tea that doesn't belong to you into the sea is illegal.

Also, the response to the Tea Party was debated before 1776.

Also, the main forum for debate and the origin of most legislation, then as now, is Commons. Contrary to what impression you may have, back in the eighteenth century, it was Commons that had the real power (and it was 'commoners' like the landed gentry and the close family of aristocrats who controlled that).

Not that any of that matters.

Actually the American media and internet seems to be producing more and more people with compassion fatigue - what was normally only a trait limited to people being exposed to horrific events constantly. But it seems to becoming more and more common it seems.

They didn't go unpunished though. One comedian even lost his job as a spokesperson for the insurance company for his remarks - an insurance company whose major clients are Japanese. I wonder why that important tidbit didn't come across his mind.

Considering that their deadline for a decision isn't really anywhere near enough time for the networks to respond the way they want, it's pretty blatantly a bluff.

Hopefully the networks will tell them to piss off and leave them with the choice of publicly begging CNN and MSNBC to throne them a bone on cable coverage or have all their cable debate coverage exclusively on Fox News. The latter will be hilarious to watch if only to see how they spin the viewing audience giving every debate win to the worst possible candidate.

So today's the confidence vote. And while it's hopefully not enough, as I predicted the Left opposition did a 180 and is supporting Rusnok's cabinet.

However, both Rusnok and the President indicated that even if the goverment does not win a confidence vote, they will remain in power.

Rusnok even said that "we will use the time given to us, until regular or early elections".

I think it was more the nature of the non-apologies: "I'm sorry you got offended" rather than "I'm sorry I was offensive", and stating that he'll continue to hold the same views, just not say them.
