I wonder what big name they'll cast for crocodile

@blue-san It definitely has a risk of alienating a part of the audience no matter what, but it is what it is. Some people just hate queer people. I'd rather it be for that reason (as much as it sucks) rather than it ending up being disrespectful on some level.
No not that queer factor. Just overdoing it... that part equals disaster
Balance of Funny / serious / emotional / teaching.
No problem i think in general having such a character but if done as in anime it will be overdone and will result in
- offensive
- cheesy
- cringe
- annoying
- ....
Not to mention holywood has the whole LGBTHQ agenda so all the people sick of it and that dont know the source will actually think this character was totally forced on screen
-
Damn, it got renewed.
Quick, all move to the Season 3 Doomer Stations!
"There is no way a season based on Skypiea will ever be profitable, Netflix will cancel the show after season 2 to avoid the risk of losing money in season 3".
-
2 was expected after seeing s1.
Season 3 however will be a challange, making a good season 2 will be haaaard
But marketing wise this is good and will keep the momentum and word about the show going/spreading for another week
-
Making a good s2 will be hard but it's well within the showrunners' ability, considering what they have shown in s1 and the overall quality of the source material (this being one of the best sagas).
I was cautiously optimist about this show before S1. Now I'm all in. Season 2 is gonna be AWESOME.
-
"The only thing we can't pierce is a snake soaked in blood".
"Which one is bigger". Oda could do something special by finally naming that little girl in the LA.
-
I wonder if they'll cast a middle eastern actress for Vivi to fit her origin theme.
Anyway, I'll reiterate my thought that the BW arc would be a perfect way to end on a high note if they can't commit to go all in (which obviously they shouldn't).
Still manageable budget wise (with some cuts) and ending on a high note for every crew members.

during roger's execution they panned on a black-haired woman and a theory was it's croc preop/hormones? (you know, the theory that the secret ivankov dangled over his head was the gender change)
which....hey, you never know. Could swap him period like they did with Siam.
-
Chopper will not be denied!!!!!!
And hey, if the Den Den Mushi are puppets, Chopper can be (partially?) animatronic too.
@Kitsune-Inferno said in Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers):
Bon Clay and Newkama Land have more in line with drag culture and gender fuckery than they do with trans identity, even though I think Oda has certainly mishandled the distinction.
I cited Jimbo as a possible Bon Clay. Jimbo is both very out there but has the ability to take direction and can act his ass off, plus his Joan Rivers voice isn't too far off from Kazuki Yao's that I could see something similar working and feeling effortless. The only knock against Jimbo is he's not known for dancing and Bon Clay does require some degree of physicality to make convincing, but I'm sure that can be solved with ballet classes.
That's not to say Jimbo is the only drag queen who could do it, there's a whole cabal of Drag Race queens who would kill it. And that's of course scratching the surface of drag queens.
If they cast Trixie Mattel I don't think I could stop laughing.

It is indeed a good place to end the show if it gets cancelled after season 2. Assuming the views are low.
But if they are high... I don't see what they wouldn't want to go all in. Why make money from just 2 sagas when you can adapt more sagas and make even more money?
-
How would s2 play in my mind
Episode 1 for this post
- They go to LT
- we get to see this iconic interaction of Luffy with the place of execution and the old man in a bar
- we get to see Zoro have a badass moment with the swords
- we get to see Usopp pick out his goggles, sanji restock on food and so forth
P.s. Good luck getting a similar looking Kuina to play Tashigi the girl in a flashback had a particularly big nose lol - because Buggy is like the fan favorite we get to see him mess with Luffy gloriously but we cut out the ridiculous Buggy wheel drive chase
- we get to see Smokers iconic my shirt ate your icream noment
- we get to see Dragon's iconic speech
As they leave we get to see the ridiculous scope of Red line and water + ancient gates leading up the mountain and we end the episode before we climb it
That is the easy part imo
Coming up - haaaard implementation decision changes etc for ep. 2
Will write up my opinion -
Live action should end season 2 like the 4kids dub. Ends with a cliffhanger of a ship about to fall from the sky. Shoot it so it looks like it’ll hit the SH ship and sink it so people can just say that’s how they died if it’s cancelled.
-
The ideal person to play Crocodile was Scott Hall, but he's dead so they can cast literally anyone else and it'll be fine so long as the sand FX are okay.
-
From “Lololol this is going to be another Cowboy Bebop” to having S2 greenlit in 2 weeks as opposed to Cowboy Bebop getting canned in 3.

I disagree with this. I wanna see a middle Eastern actress for Vivi. As for the blue hair they can do a homage to it. Like have the actress wear a blue wig while she's Miss Wednesday then when her identity is revealed have the actress use her natural hair
-
I'd take a mix of these 2, but mostly Sweet Tooth
-
Arabasta has great comedy especially when it comes to animals. It would be great if they would show the Warusagi Birds and include Eyeleashes in the Live adaptation. Some stupid ass Barock work members can easily left out imo.
I wish they will do their own thing and surprise us with some choices and changes. The flair of the show has to be right - less the action is important than rather the interactions. Dr. Hiluluk and Chopper episodes will be extremly interesting for that reason. Blowing the budget for cherry blossom stuff is gladly welcomed.
Anyways, I just hope the Luffy actor will level up in regards to his acting. Have been rewatching some scenes and episodes. For everyone else my impression went up, except for the Luffy guy. Hate this guy as Luffy.
-
Still haven't had the time to watch the LA, but I assume its a hit from everything I've heard about it.
Also cool that there's gonna be a second season. I hope any misgivings I will have about the first season are fixed for the next season.
Since Oda drew Chopper, I'd assume we end either with Drum or end with them getting to Alabasta. Either way excited to watch the show once I have time. -
@Dragon-D-Luffy I would think because it would be insanely expensive.
Just thinking about how expensive Skypiea and even the journey up there makes me think that that's probably going to be a budget higher than most films. I'm not saying they won't if this series becomes one of their big hits like Wednesday and Stranger and there's a lot of potential for them to see it as that level of success, but I do think they will be more cautious about looking at how successful season 2 is before deciding season 3, seeing as how it involves a place that you literally cannot find any real-world locations to film in.I know Upper yard exist but they did spend a significant of time on the Sky island so that's going to cost a lot. Removing the upward stream would save money but it's going to hurt. Just...Skypiea is a whole different beast all together to put right on screen. I know we have the Star wars series where there are whole different worlds and it works but Star wars also have the backing of a huge, huge international audience and a very much failsafe brand(at least, at first) to work with.

while i think they'd just give her blue hair no matter what (see Nojiko) I think this would be a really creative way to go about it.

Make the buildings and then flood the ground with a fog machine/add it in post. Have Luffy bounce up and down a couple times to sell it and good to go. Wouldn't be any more expensive than any of the other sets.
I mean, Neverending Story nailed it 40 years ago.
Yeah the blue screen clipping is a little obvious to modern eyes (ditto Superman 77) but its not hard to get some hellcopter B roll footage of clouds and plop it behind them.
Most of the action is on solid dirt anyway.
-
Nah man.
Netflix is not gonna say "we are making massive profit but let's stop now because next season looks risky"
That has never been a sentence a media executive said.
They will try to make it work. Cancelation only happens AFTER a season fails to make money, not before.
I have no doubts Netflix wants to adapt the entire manga. I don't know if they will pull it off, but not wanting to make the amount of money this thing has the potential to make is not how businesses work. At all. Someone has already done the math on the possible returns of a 1200 chapter manga adapted into TV and you can be sure that factored in the decision to greenlight this show in the first place.

Message from Oda
( sorry, just saw the video was already posted in the seasonn 1 thread)I've seen a lot of discussion about how they're going to make Chopper work visually, which obviously is a huge hurdle, but what do we want for his voice? Do you think they should go with high pitched and cute like the anime, or could they go in a different direction, like just having a younger teen voice?
-
Chris Pratt.
-
@Dragon-D-Luffy oh no that's not what I'm trying to say. I don't know what metrics are they relying on and I'm not that guy you've mentioned who calculated stuff. But I wanted to point out that overall investment($$$) into a series always relates to the results it delivers. And sure, the success of season 1 gave us season 2 (in 2 weeks). And it's never a short-term thing either because obviously, this series has the chance to be really big long-term. It will always be a threshold/measuring stick thing in business decision making, when something gets more popular or less popular you can still give a yes but then your yes will have to be then weighted against how much are you willing to spend + should we change things more to appeal to XYZ to gather more audience from XYZ + is the growth stagnating? will it grow more than it already does? There are shows that have a lot of material to work with and a lot of potential but it doesn't change the fact that either the budget will decrease or the source material will be changed when it is not meeting their less than expectations (which does change and often increase as time pass).
That is my point and sure, cancellation might be a very extreme example to bring up but the whole point of people being in disbelief of this going pass the timeskip and having longevity is also because of cost, which is a valid point. All of this naught if the series becomes as big as it can potentially be but as of right now, this is still up for discussion.
-
oh yeah I just wanted to add that the Giants from GoT will work well for Little Island if they decided to keep it. Not sure how much THAT will cost but I'm pretty sure it's more affordable than sea king size giants. Sure, it's not manga accurate but its better than dropping them altogether.
-
I dunno. They;'re aexcluding 10 foot tall people for obvious reasons, it'd just look silly, but giants you expect to be... big.
It's also one of those things that early on opens the world and shows that its big.
-
And 10 ft people have always looked silly in the manga itself, and borderline nonsensical.
It's always bugged me at how those cities in OP seem populated by only normal sized people, but almost all the yonko/shichibukai/admirals are multiple meters tall. Except for the ones that were introduced early in the series (Shanks, Mihawk), because Oda hadn't started doing it yet.
And most of those characters would work just the same if they had normal height.
Though Big Mom needs to be huge. That's a core part of the character.
-
I've been spoiled on where it ends, so it doesn't matter. Before and when it was 1st announced, I thought they could only tap Baratie, but cutting out the Krieg/Gin drama was enough.
I still don't think they can touch Alabasta for season 2.
-
@Cockycent said in Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers):
I still don't think they can touch Alabasta for season 2.
Why not? They got through Arlong Park with 8 episodes. Another 8 Episodes could certainly reach Arabasta.
-
@danie Alabasta is its beast. To touch it in season 2 would mean that you can't complete it. Cliffhanger with Croc defeating Luffy the 1st time?
That arc is the key point for that initial Alabasta Saga, so it's main elements can't be skipped.
- Civil War
- BW vs crew
- country w/o rain
They can skip the initial Rain Dinners conflict where they are chased by Marines, captured by Croc, and then save Smoker. The whole Robin/PG aspect is up to them as well on whether to decrease its spread throughout the arc or not. Luffy meeting Toto is another possible omission.
This is me decreasing points to be generous and show that what's left still is too much to cover, so why touch the arc at all?
Syrup Village could have been 1 episode, but they spread it out to 2. How can they think about touching Alabasta if arcs like SV are being stretched out.
Logue Town can be 1 episode or 75% of it, but they can also make it 2. Reverse Mountain to the end of Little Garden could be 3, even if you omit the bulk of Reverse/Whiskey Peak.
That leaves 2-3 episodes to cover Drum arc, which could be done in an episode and a half, but then you only have half of an episode to...
cliffhanger points
- meeting Bon Clay, marking themselves with the X as they prepare to enter the Port
- Port of Nanohana meeting Ace and he takes out the billions
- Croc defeat Luffy
Going too deep into Alabasta takes away from what these American studios like to do on the side. They want their creative freedom too.
In season 1, it was the inclusion of Garp/Koby being more than it was. I expect they continue with that type of freedom in season 2 whether I like it or love it.
On top of that its the omissions that were mentioned earlier and going too deep into Alabasta.
-
Loguetown+entering grand line - Episode 1
Laboon+Whiskey(and if they cut little garden, they'll incorporate stuff in here that they find important)- Episode 2
Drum (if skipping Little Garden) - Episode 3
Drum part 2 + Alabasta part 1 - Episode 4 (Drum will follow Syrup's allocated time)
And you'll get 4 episodes for Alabasta. Want to flesh out characters such as Smoker, the civil war factions and baroque works? Do what they did with Coby and slot them in during the cutaways. You'll get 4 episodes for Alabasta and if you want to include Little Garden which can be one episode, you'll still get 3. They're not going to take the Coby Angle of "oh the straw hats aren't that bad" again this time with Smoker...probably, so there's more room and time to develop whatever their side narrative(s) will be next season.3-4 is fine if we approach it this way:
1 - Meet ace, fast forward travelling, meet old man Toto, and every faction starts to move.
2 - Rain Diners, ends with Luffy losing and the war starting.
3- Fights starts and concludes. Fights will take drastically less time in LA so most of this will be Crocodile shit-talking the king and vivi and bomb locating.
4- Luffy beats Crocodile (fights doesn't have to end an episode as shown in S1), Vivi's farewell, Smoker stuff and scenes to build up to s3.If we don't skip little garden then you can probably merge 2 and some of 3 but I do think it might get cut.
East blue saga had FOUR character arcs and still managed to work (I have a lot of opinion about characterization but I'll leave it at that).
Alabasta saga pretty much has only two character arcs that is the focus of it and if they can omit stuff from Sanji and Usopp arcs then they surely can do the same for every other side characters in the saga.
Personally if they cut out Old Man Toto I will drop the series forever and not because it is any way objectively bad(but I can write an essay about how important he is) but because of my own bias and the hurt that I will feel. -
I did wanted to say that there is a possibility that, since this is western TV we are talking about, either one or both of the following will happen:
- Coby joins up with Smoker in some way or another and we cut away from them here and there just like in S1 with Garp.
- Buggy and Ace having more screentime together than the source material because of the angle of "hey buggy is a yonkou eventually and is relevant (the actor being so good is great too) so let's give him screentime every season to build another narrative so that we can make it feel like GoT-style even though he didn't appeared like 10 years later in the source material" which might work. I don't care enough to bother with how exciting that will be. Phenomenal actor though.
They can run with a Buggy helps Ace finds Blackbeard, abandon him or get separated or whatever. You get your dramatic and tension music cues when he does his non-existent TV-only tracking scenes to Blackbeard, shove a bunch of screentime to build up to Ace capture that is, as per TV terms, "carefully expanded on the source material", and then you get a good lead-in to Marineford.
Huh...So that's how they can keep Buggy relevant and do one more "This is a huge world, believe me" POV thing with Ace too. I didn't think of that but that's cool. Just cut like a handful of side characters and their stories, none of them really matters if they aren't going to be relevant long-term anyway (Or you know, just cosplay the characters we cut and let them appear for like a second, that will show attention to detail.)
I won't say I like it because it takes away screentime from what is already squashed and jam-packed content into 8 episodes (and a lot of cutaway content) but if the live-action audience wants their thing, they'll get their thing. Whether it truly works or not will always be fun to discuss in hindsight years later.

Live Action is notI couldnt disagree more. Shouldnt One Piece be about fun and freedome. Why so serious? Anime=Cartoon - I m well aware of that. Im talking about the Comic (=literal translation of manga) not the shitty cartoon (which was still good around Arabasta though). They could save time on screen by leaving out a lot of other stuff like over the top scenes like Pells fake death that was revealed just a couple of chapters later so just the reader can leave Arabasta with a good conscience. GEtting tired of people telling me what One Piece is or is not about.
-
Depends on what Logue Town is. Again, to be generous, i'd scrap Tashigi, the swordshop shenanigans with Sandai, and any other shopping endeavor.
Still have to introduce Smoker which with the way they showed Smoker (yeah I was spoiled for this), he might function like the Koby/Garp B plot after Logue Town. So they most likely go the distance with introducing him while trying to balance Buggy/Alvida going after Luffy.
On top of that, Luffy surviving Buggy (can cut out the lightning if they want to, up to them), then Smoker finally wrestling him down is an issue because it feels like cliffhanger territory. Based on how they dragged out Syrup Village, it's hard to see them passing up Luffy surviving as an episode ender.
I was considering cutting a lot of the Toto, Rain Dinner, and anyything else minor out to be generous, but if they are included... that near impossible to do in 1 season.
I don't see the point in cutting out Little Garden, but Whiskey Peak being so important that it has to be included. Dorry and Brogy aren't Gin and Krieg. They exist beyond that arc and are attached to many other points.
Aside from all that, if they do want to create some B plot similar to season 1, having Smoker follow up on Robin can decrease a lot of inner arc heavy lifting. Both Smoker and Robin feel like extra plot points throughout that Saga anyway. They're involved, but feel bigger than the immediate and more intimate plot.
-
@Cockycent they can always just throw a line in that says hey there's a place called elbaf! oh hey that's so cool! okay we want to go there anywhere down the series if they decide that it is going to have longevity.
Or they can introduce giants in Enies lobby (doubt so) but if they don't want to, they can just scrap the giants there too since they scrap it in Little Garden.
Elbaf can be a "we'll get there when we get there but we probably don't need to think that far seeing how it only really matters 10 years down the road". -
@zeltrax225 The Giants were big for Usopp's development. Before Alabasta, he's just there for a lot of the moments.
At least between Logue Town, WP, and Drum, there's bits for Sanji, Zoro, Nami, and Luffy.
Dorry and Brogy leave an impression on Usopp. Just look at the ch. 1090 when Usopp and Luffy hear of Elbaf. They are full of life.
Why would they take that joy from poor Usopp?
-
I think considering they took away the veggie kids and fighting Jango LA Usopp kinda needs the giants to pad out his character a bit.
-
@Cockycent the same reason they took it away from him in Syrup village.
-
@MetaMario my counterpoint is they can do his development in Water 7/Enies where he'll get more screen time and development than everyone else anyway (less Robin). There's ALOT of Usopp in that arc.
-
@zeltrax225 you know, considering that in this version, Usopp looked noticably upset that Luffy mentioned he (and not his own son) was with Yasopp
could maybe(?) work that in as a heat of the moment grievence in their w7 duel? maybe?
-
@MetaMario that'll be cool if we get there. It'll be a nice touch and makes sense too.
-
@zeltrax225 Taking away a mention of Giants when Usopp still has a whole arc to himself in East Blue is different from taking away the actual Giants when Usopp has next to nothing for himself in Alabasta Saga before they reach Alabasta.
There is no big loss for the omission of Giants in SV arc. There is 1 when 1 of its purpose is to give Usopp growth that he doesn't receive in that block of arcs.
-
@Cockycent even if I do get where you are coming from, what you value as important character development/moment for a character might not be the same as whoever holds the reins. You can be right and it might be so essential that they decide to dedicate an episode worth of money, effort and screentime into (not saying that it is the ONLY reason to do Little garden) but the first season also didn't mind not giving Sanji the fleshing out he needed (his entire realization of his need to chase his dream was replaced by a heart to heart session) and removing the Usopp pirates (which can be a very valid argument that they make up a lot of who he is as an individual that is equal to or even more important than his admiration of the giants).
Like you've said, he does get something in Alabasta and that was his big moment all the way until W7 so there's really nothing stopping them from checking that off the list and say that's all he'll need seeing how we have this bunch of stuff we need to cramp in.
For the record, I do want Little Garden to happen but if we are talking about letting it happen for the prioritization of a character moment then I am very doubtful because of how much there is in Alabasta and how this same adaptation chose to cut away the Baratie Don Krieg Crisis which is full of characterization for Sanji and replaced it with...something. So I like to think it is reasonable to believe that it won't be that high up a priority considering the amount they have to work with.
-
@zeltrax225 Little Garden was mostly a BW arc with Usopp development as a smaller detail.
If they want to, they can create something newer for him, but then that's not the only purpose of Little Garden.
It was a destination that like Drum Kingdom, it stands out thematically and visually for the sake of the Grand Line being this varied, grand, exotic, setting.
Little Garden was a real taste of Baroque Works that test the crew more than the other BW members did.
Not just giving the crew a taste, their underhanded methods were previewed because the way they tampered with the Giants was modus operandi for how Croc tinkered a Civil War for Operation Utopia.
Last, but not least, Little Garden foreshadows the great Candle Champion Luffy that appears in Impel Down.
Too much is on the line here. As a preference, I know the live action can't do both Afro Luffy and Candle Champion, but i'd like 1 to make it in the end.
-
@Cockycent other then my need to get one last word in and say that they can shift Mr 3 over to Whiskey peak and re-enact the same plot beats over there, I agree with most of what you've said about Little Garden and how great it is as a place/arc. Whether it will be adapted or not and whether that is important to them as it is to you, we'll see.
