This is insane!
I got my membership in september when it was like 24€ for a whole year, which was already a freaking big deal for the amount of manga you got, but this is now even more value for less. Kudos to them.
My question is, now that it is cheaper, will existing members get something in return for the higher sub prices we payed?
-
I believe it's three extra months past your currently active subscription.
-
So…there will no longer be a weekly comic format? You just show up on Monday and click to the particular manga you want to read the new release of?

More info with the new issue next week

so the app works on pc, or only in mac or android?
-
Ooh! They finally announced it! So great.
-
I hope the app is updated accordingly because that's what I've been using ever since I first subscribed. Way more convenient than using a browser + VPN to access the outdated online reader.

Yeah I hope so too. I only needed vpn once to download the ios/android apps and pay for a yearly sub, now I can use the apps without vpn which is great.

Anyone else think this announcement warrants it's own thread?
I feel like a lot that would be interested that read scans won't be reading this particular thread.

Folks, how would you feel if, when Jump makes this switch, AP makes a push to try and start enforcing "same day as japan" release schedules and better support the official release?
We've discussed this before, on staff and in public, and the logistics have always been a nightmare. The english release was weeks behind the japanese originally, and then when it caught up there was the fact that you have to pay to get it, and lots of our readers are around the world and don't have access to it.
We still can't do anything about the worldwide readers part, but if it's going legit and free there's no reason for us to not try now at least. The bootleg editions will still beat it by a day or two, and that's where the worldwide readers will probably still have to go, but I think the difference between Friday morning and Sunday evening really isn't that huge. If we as a community embraced the change, and as a whole stopped supporting the bootleg scanlation sites while also pushing up Jump's numbers to show them that yes, there is interest in this and that is the way to go, that would only be a positive thing.
Spoiler stuff could still stay in the spoiler section, and anyone that wants to go hunt down the bootlegs can…. but this is probably the best chance we'll ever have to push and endorse the official release and encourage the transition, and add at least a pretense of credibility to everything we do.
Would you guys be up for it if we really tried to make a push and enforce the idea? Or is this just a pipe dream and everyone is going to read the bootleg to get it 30 hours sooner anyway? Would all the traffic just die and go to a different site entirely if we enforced this?
Honest feedback here guys.

Video isn't available in Australia.
Otherwise principle sounds really good - the format of having to individually go back through issues to get to a particular chapter or re-read an arc was the biggest flaw of Viz relative to scanlations (which came across as a ploy to sell more volumes).
-
Can someone explain what this is about? Both link and video are not available in my country….

Long story short, the English-language Shonen Jump is going to start uploading new chapter releases for free (at least for a few weeks) on the same day as Japanese release and changing their paid subscription model to primarily be for access to the chapter backlog (and supporting the authors/industry).

Put scanlation release discussion in spoiler section.
Technically, scanlation releases ARE spoilers.

I had to google "backlog", with that you mean every single volume released so far, right? So if you subscribe you have access to everything online? And the recent chapters are going to be free as well?
That's crazy. I wish I wouldn't live in the third world country called Germany. Sadly I know very little about internet things and how to cheat myself around barriers and stuff, and of course I don't know if there would be any legal consequences for me if I did. I need to look into this, thanks.

I think we should try and stick with the official schedule. I think the spoiler section can remain for those that want to discuss scans before the official release.
Honestly, I'm personally going to be done with looking at spoilers. I usually check spoilers because -for the most part- I'm busy on Fridays and Saturdays and like to take the time to read chapters. And when I DO read the chapters properly, it's the Viz release.
I think us on this forum should at least attempt to try and break this cycle by not posting about chapters until they officially come out.
I mean, you don't see a huge faction of movie fans openly discussing new movies online that have been released in another country a week early because there are shitty cam quality uploads of it. Most people say "Hey, it's a week and I can actually see the movie instead of seeing this bad quality film with people laughing and reacting in the background while this random logo flashes on the screen every few minutes".
The fact that scanlations are still preferred by so many with access to the official is because of
A. The cost of the official
and
B. Early release
Point A has just been solved.
Point B though is always going to remain as long as this cycle continues of giving incentive to sites to upload them early.
It's 3 days. Those that are in North America really don't have an excuse to read the scans outside of simply wanting to read it sooner. I've actually been debating back and forth with someone on Twitter who keeps insinuating that this is a waste because "Until they release chapters when the scans come out, nobody will wait". His argument boiled down to "Well even though it's a better quality version of the exact same product all around, I like to talk about One Piece with my friends when it comes out". But he just kept repeating "Well, they should release the online chapters on Fridays and release the physical in Japan on mondays".
He really thinks the smart business move to "get his business" is undercut people that pay the cheap amount for the weekly physical copy. You know to undercut the fact that people illegally are posting this product.
I do feel bad for those in countries where this isn't easily accessible though. That's one of the biggest challenges this industry needs to address if they want to fight online piracy. I know it's a tangled mess of licensing and copyright, but it just feels like a problem that gets continually ignored and it gives a direct reason to go to these scans, which in turn incentivize those that are releasing these chapters early, which gives people that HAVE a legal outlet the excuse to not use them and instead read the scans. And the cycle continues.
Scanlation sites are making ad rev from people on their site. People that have the option of the official release, or scanlations and choose the latter do it because the product they want is coming out earlier. And because of this, as long as it's getting their sites traction, the scanlation sites aren't going to do something like hold off on releasing until the mondays. Because any of them know that if they DID do that, the other sites won't and will just take readers from each other.
So the cycle needs to be broken. Again, not even of scans themselves, but the decade-and-a-half pattern of fans used to discussing chapters before they are actually released.
I'm really hoping SJ, Shueisha, and everyone else legally begins a bigger crackdown on those who are getting the chapters uploaded early.
Remember a few years back when they sent Cease and Desists to Mangastream and a few other sites? Shit changed. Mangastream shut down for a few months, but even when it returned they weren't keeping the entire back-catalog of their scanlations. They only have two or three chapters up at any given time.
What needs to happen right now with manga is what happened to fansubs with anime. Both fansubs and scanlations were a necessity at certain points for the majority of fans. However, with the advent of simulcasts, or even episodes being subbed in a day, it made the time and effort put into fansubs not worth it. But the legal outlets to watch these series aren't what killed most fansubs. What did it was that -even though fansubbed shows were available cheap and legally- it was far more convenient for websites to just rip the official subbed episodes and upload them to their own sites. Why have somebody who can translate and make the subtitles when you can just reupload the legal version!
If the gap between scanlations and the official gets any closer, I'm hoping that these sites/translators decide the time and effort of having their inferior product out a day or two earlier than the free superior version just isn't worth it. There has to be some point when they decide it's just easier to steal the official release and upload it for those who can't legally access it.
But the final nail in the coffin is always going to be stopping those in Japan who have access to the magazine early and scan them. I'd assume those people are both the easiest to prosecute(with them being in Japan and all) and the best way to stop this problem. No point in scanlations if that gap disappears. And that gap only exists because of these people.

So, I know VIZ Online uploads the serials on monday here in the States. When does Japan get it?

Going to be honest, I'm of…unexpectedly mixed feelings on this...
From an industry perspective, I think it's a great move, giving fans who want to read the English version an official way to do so that is both free and is as timely as possible without undercutting the Japanese release. On that front, I wholeheartedly support the decision.
From a community perspective...I kind of like things the way they are. I'm all for supporting the author and the industry, and having access to the VIZ version without needing a subscription is something that I will definitely strive to use... But I'm also someone who enjoys theorizing and speculating as we get the spoilers, and frankly anyone following the spoilers is going to read a scan so long as they're available. Having to wait until the VIZ release to discuss the chapter in the public forum forces spoiler-goers to either do a hefty chunk of their discussion in the spoiler thread (which would ultimately be locked), or just sit on their thoughts and comments for another 2+ days. Furthermore, comparing/contrasting different translations can be insightful at times.
Perhaps allow spoiler-goers to start a chapter discussion thread in the spoiler section, then move it to the public manga forum after the official release?
Ultimately, I've no plans to go anywhere - I like the community here (most of the time :p).
-
Spoiler discussing the leaked chapters would stay in the spoiler thread, I'd think.
In the past we've tried having a "viz translation" discussion thread, but that hasn't worked because all the traffic runs through the first release thread. But if they were one in the same, it might be different.
Or it might be the spoiler threads become 50 pages long and the official chapter discussions are dead. I dunno. Hence asking for feedback.
-
That's great and all, but I don't care about weekly official releases. I'd rather just buy a volume, that way I support the series and get an addition to the bookshelf. Same mentality goes for western comics for me. And spoiler discussion is usually more fun than actual chapter discussion, a great deal of the weekly fun is speculating on the chapter as details and pics come out. With release threads I just skim the first and last few posts if anything at all, so I don't care what happens there as long as those of us who like spoilers can still discuss in the subforum.
-

That's my concern, more or less.
If everything continues as it has in the past, we'll have roughly five days (Wed-Mon) between spoilers starting to show up and the official chapter release, and two days between chapter release and the next chapter's spoilers. I think it's only natural that the bulk of the discussion would therefore end up in the spoiler threads.
Of course, that's provided spoilers/RAWs come out as they have been in the past… If the economic ecosystem and incentive structure changes enough that they start coming out later (or not at all), that's a different matter entirely.
As I said, though, short of something full-on cataclysmic happening to the forum, I'm not planning on going anywhere. And ultimately, I'm a big proponent of trying to support the author/industry when I am able. One Piece is really the only series I still follow regularly/obsessively enough to warrant reading scans in the first place, and that hasn't stopped me from piling up all 88 volumes of the English release on my bookshelf.
End of the day, I'll adapt like everyone else.

I think there should be only one single thread. A lot of things that is said in the spoiler thread is missed by those who don't read spoilers. People who postin the spoiler thread don't want to retell what they have already told.
Current lengths don't justify to have 2 threads.
The only inconvenient is that an admin must move the thread since the spoiler section is in a private area -
This is a great opportunity to make the change, I think it's a good idea to give it a try. If the schedule becomes normal and consistent, there will be lots of people who will adapt.

Excuse me, guys, it will be available only in US? Or in Europe too?
'Cause i can't download the Shonen Jump Manga Reader App in Italy. -
This is great. My year subscription just ended and I was about to renew until I saw this. So I'll wait until the 17th? Or get it now….hmmm..
-

'Cause i can't download the Shonen Jump Manga Reader App in Italy. It's only available in the US and other English speaking countries. However, at least for now, the app works even if you are outside of those territories. So if you use a VPN or happen to be in the UK for whatever reason, you can download the app and then use it no problem.
-
I'd like the idea of switching to the official schedule if the service was available for more countries. A lot of members here live in places where we can't access these.
-
Damn this sounds mighty fine, here's to hoping we will eventually see the day when scans of mainstream series become a thing of the past.
I really, really wish they'd be able to extend their business to Europe, though. Similar to others, I live in France and here as well the video (and likely any opportunity to buy from Viz that doesn't involve a VPN) is blocked. As for pushing back discussion to the day of legal release, I'm all for it. It's not like anything we say here couldn't wait 30 hours or so.

In a time when kids have to answer their notications in seconds, 30 hours is an eternity…

I'm 100 percent in support. There's only a 2 day difference, it's affordable, and it's completely legal. I don't see what the problem with keeping the Spoiler thread open for 2 more days would be? I also think that most people will come to find that a week is a week. Waiting monday to monday feels the same as friday to friday.
-
Reading more about it (especially the daily restriction to the vault), I now have a bad feeling that the app won't get access to all of this. That would mean no more offline reading which would sucks. I really hope I'm wrong.
-
I'm passionately behind making the transition, Robby.
-
+1 to trying to shift to a official release date.
Honestly, the hard part will be avoiding spoilers. There's so many youtubers I'm subscribed to that do live reactions and discussions well before Monday hits. Will have to really change my weekly habits.
Also might be worth just subscribing to the $2 a month to get the ENTIRE catalog. Now I just hope they put that money into bettering their interface. I still cannot believe they are using flash on their site.
-
You need to use a vpn once to download the app on ios or android. And on pc to make an account on the shonen jump site, then you can start the app on your device without vpn and log in without problems or region lock and all the content is there.
I got an annual sub in september and planned to catch up to series like Dr. Stone, MHA, Food Wars etc. on scan sites up to the current SJ issues from ViZ. Thankfully still haven‘t done it due to other things, cause now in a couple days I will be able to read the entire backlog in great quality and legally on the app.I‘m really happy. Give me a great service and like in the case of netflix, spotify and so on, I won‘t need to use illegal means.
Sucks that it isn‘t worldwide, but different licensors in other countries basically make this impossible.
-
I think the forum following the official schedule only makes sense at this point. But I can't compromise.
Since I will still need to follow the scanlations to get weekly chapters, I will obviously discuss it with the rest of the fandom as soon as JB/MS/whoever releases them on friday. By the time the official thread is open on monday/sunday night, I will have discussed pretty much everything I wanted and I will not engage much in discussions. I don't feel right saying "yeah, do it" knowing once it is done I will not help to keep those threads active.

While I don't enjoy any of the One Piece youtubers, I get what you're saying.
That's why I honestly recommend everybody that watches these people and supports the official release, to send a message to these people.
I mean they're content creators. They rely on people to view and "like" their content. If these people explain "hey could you push back to the official release date, because I want to support the official release and don't want to have to stop watching your videos when they're released or unsubscribe to avoid spoilers" there's a good chance they'll actually consider it.

I basically dont use twitter/youtube/instagram from the days the spoiler drop to the day the scan gets released. Id basically have to cut off all the social media for half the week or mute hundreds of words on twitter. I could do that if enough people held off on things and the big timers I follow followed suit.
Regarding officializing I have two things to say.
1. I would be down if there was a way to have two threads one for the traditional spoiler release and one for the scans. I dont like reading text and images seperately so I would like a way to know when the scan is released and thus maybe having two spoiler threads would work.
2. The other side of this argument is are you legit if you host any spoilers on the site. Because having a similar amount of people talk about the chapter but in a members only forum might be better optics but Id argue it still isnt completely official.
Edit:
3. The lack of chapter discussion wont effect only the threads but every other thread in the manga section. And I guess other threads in the other manga forum.

Viz announced that releases will be fully simultaneous with Japan, not just to the calendar day anymore.
So, hope you like your official releases a day earlier than usual now too.

Will do my best, but to many of these people, it's become an income stream for them. Moving to Monday is a HUGE risk for them because if there's even a one a couple reviewers sticking to scantalations, many people who want to discuss it ASAP might flock to the other tubers.
I commend Rogersbase for sticking to Monday reviews, but most Youtubers and reviewers don't got quite that clout to survive that hit.

I wonder if there is a relationship between Shonen Jump and Youtube that would curb this? I don't watch One Piece Youtubers at all and don't know the logistics behind Youtube punishing those with early content in relation to anything.
And to be quite frank, they should all be willing to move the day anyway. What Viz/Shonen Jump is doing is incredibly consumer friendly and if they're making their living off of One Piece, they should be willing to give something back to the creators.

Although the exact time hasn't been announced, Viz's SJ acct. just confirmed Sunday releases.

Lately shueisha has been cracking down on people showing panels in Live Reaction / Scan Reviews before monday. Although Im not even sure you'd be safe if you did this after monday.
Certain OP youtubers have speculated that the next step will be shueisha taking down reviews discussing the chapter before they're released but im not sure they'd have any legal basis there, or if YT would apply. Thought YT's copyright system is pretty broken in any large property can copyright claim your videos if they want, so im sure they could do it, it just might not be permanently viable.

Yeah that was a precaution against pedants, since I was just as much in the dark as everyone else (and then I was told to keep the TRUE simul news hush hush for a little while longer), but I made an addendum to my mini thread after the official account wrote #sundayfunday.
Wild stuff, y'all.
Also,
-
So this is like Marvel Unlimited, but up to date(Unlimited works with a 6 month gap), awesome.
-
My thoughts: Keep the spoiler thread going as usual, but no official chapter is allowed to be created until the official Viz release.
On a side note, I'm really happy to see so many people in this community backing the idea of trying to follow the legit sources.
-
I don't know what consequences this could have towards forum traffic, but I'm putting my vote in for making the change. This just seems like the perfect time.
