Indecision 2016 - In Soviet Russia, we elect american president!
-
But that isn't something he can in any way make into a law, or is it?
Not legally anyhow. But we'll see
-
He'd need a constitutional amendment, which is pretty unlikely. I'd hope that no Democrats (and not all Republicans) would help him restrict our freedom of speech.
Incidentally, weren't people here complaining about anti-PC groups "fighting for the right to be assholes in public" a few months ago? :P

Yes? I'm not sure what you mean by this question.
-
I'm sort of interested by how suprisingly capable Russia apparently is.
You wouldn't expect ramshackle Russia to be able to pull the digital wool over the US's eyes.
Russia is the sort of place where under their economic crippling recently they were sure to cut funds on social services before they cut them from their military and propaganda departments.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Trump making America North Korea again.
Ah there's the terrifying authoritarian side again.
-
Yes? I'm not sure what you mean by this question.
I was calling attention to the fact that we now all seem to be on the same page about why unpopular speech needs to be protected (provided that it doesn't incite violence or put someone in immediate danger).

The guy to be in charge of Health and Human Services doesn't believe people are entitled to either; Republicans are also deciding that there's really no need to replace Obamacare any time soon. Just repeal it and worry about the consequences later.
He's also gung-ho for "phasing out" (aka killing off so they can steal the money) Medicare, which just goes to show how much of an idiot anybody middle-aged and above was for voting Republican.

That sounds upsettingly like North Korea.

Do they just not care about being re-elected at this point? I don't understand how anyone could promote or defend the Ryan plan.

I'm glad me and Chrissie got on a health plan through her school system before this.
Well until the public school systems fall under assault from this monstrous woman Trump is considering that is.In some ways the only optimism I even have for the next four years is that I live in Connecticut. But watch us end up with a Republican governor in 2018…

True enough i guess. Guess one should never underestimate Russian technology.
Or "willingness" to make sacrifices to an end.

Unpopular speech is one thing. Spouting hate and being terrible to minorities women and lgbtq isn't something that should be protected. That tends to be the difference. You can say what you want. But it doesn't necessarily mean that you should in every scenario.
Anti-pc people usually hate pc because they don't get to make massively inappropriate comments. But they are also the same people that ugly cry over a starbucks cup.
-

They'll blame it on Democrats like they always do; especially if they get some idiot to go along with them and vote across party lines.
The media is also totally going to be pushing this as something that is absolutely necessary for the survival of the program; destroying Medicare and eventually Social Security would be huge news stories and that's all they really care about.
Also a birther .
Who won't be under the new Administration?
It's only a matter of time until they just pretend everything Obama did was illegal so they don't have to actually pass laws to change it.
@Monkey:

Plus unions since whoever gets picked to be Secretary of Labor will be going after them as well.
-
[h=1]Climate change denial will be ‘default position’ of White House says Trump’s chief of staff[/h]Too bad this won't be news because Trump told the NYT that he might do some research into it and that is more than enough for the NYT to insist for 4 years that he believes in climate change and that dems should stop banging on about it.
-
Trump's administration will have to be quite efficient in order to do all that you've guys have predicted he'll do in four short years.
-
Plus unions since whoever gets picked to be Secretary of Labor will be going after them as well.
National Right-To-Work laws.
-
And i mean that in genuine curiosity about your system. Even with a good starting hand, dismantling both the healthcare system, and all forms of social security is a huge, time consuming, task that would take any Swedish government at least a decade, assuming that they aren't fought on it. Add to that, that Trump's administration will work to ban unions, undermine public education in favour of religious schooling, repealling all LGBT and minority positive advances, making a 180 degree turn on all enviromental pacts, legalize child labour and make laws criticizing symbols of the nation. It all seems like an incredibly tall order for a single term. But then again i'm thinking of it from a Swedish perspective where things and grand plans grind to a bickering halt all the dang time.
-
A lot of this could just be accomplished by gutting funding to public entities in favor of routing it to corporations and the GOP controls both houses of Congress, which creates budgets, and will have Trump sign them into law. You wouldn't have to change laws to destroy things like public education, but just not pay for it.
Some of it would take Supreme Court decisions but it'll be a 5-4 conservative Court again soon and there's no shortage of organizations that will file lawsuits to get things overturned.

Our governments have better checks and balances and require much more cooperation, consensus building, taking into account the parties in power at local level, etc to pass legislation. And we don't have any crazypants parties aside from the fringes. Meanwhile, the crazypants American party controls the presidency, congress, soon the Supreme Court and 36 state houses (the most power the GOP's had since 1928). And this party doesn't care about the opposition or that the majority of voters didn't vote for them.
And just consider how much Bush Jr. was able to do in his 4 first years in office.

sigh at this point I shouldn't be surprised by TRump's scumminess. At least some of the comments made me laugh. I love these that refer to Khazr Khan=

WTF when are these people going to realize that keeping Medicare is saving money in the long run? If elderly and disabled don't have money for their medical needs, they go to emergency room instead of dr.s office, they end up needing even more help later on and costing even more money. I think there was a report a few decades ago (90s or 2000s?) that stated that its better (finically as well as humanely) to keep medicare and other social aids like madicaid.

I have no idea if she's a good pick. Trumps trends tell me there must be something awful about her. But so far it just seems she's very much been in the establishment for a long time. Which isn't necessarily terrible?

I think those are two different groups of people, honestly. The people crying over Starbucks cups are effectively right-wing SJWs, the same people who constantly cry "WAR ON CHRISTMAS!" or "ABORTION IS MURDER!"
The anti-PC people tend to be more Libertarian, moderate or left-leaning on social issues. There's some overlap with hate groups, but a majority are really just sick of all the thought policing that goes on nowadays.

Heritage Foundation + Mitch McTurtleton's wife. Bad enough.
You know the bar is set low when our standards are "At least she's not a literal Nazi or Klan member" :P

They aren't. I think you're combining two very opposed groups and mindsets. SWJs are the ones that would like the cups because they are more inclusive. It's the right that bitch and moan over Christmas not being the only holiday to celebrate. SWJs would also claim a more pro choice stance. Policing can get out of hand. But extremes happen on either side and unfortunately it makes the vaild claims seem lile whining.

SJW is used to describe people who join social change movements motivated almost purely by outrage. They're always poorly informed and poorly invested, with their "contributions" being to make everyone around them miserable. I think that fits "war on christmas" and "abortion is muder" people perfectly.
SJW-driven movements always advocate for authoritarianism and attempt to forcibly shrink the Overton window, which definitely describes those people. I think a lot of crazies supporting historical movements like prohibition, the red scare and the Salem witch trials fit right in.

This definition is a strawman perpetrated by the right, against the left. They call progressives who speak up about social justice "SJW"s. Emphasis on justice. Meaning feminism, gay rights, civil rights, BLM stuff, etc.
Turning around and calling their own reactionary culture warriors "SJW"s might be a fun/silly way to make the Bible-thumpers and Starbucks-boycotters good and mad, but it's not really how the term is used in the mainstream.

It's used by the left against the left just as often. I think the strawman usage you're describing is when it's used against feminists, rather than against social justice activists as a whole; I've never heard it used as a pejorative for people fighting for gay rights, and only very rarely have I heard it used to describe BLM activists within America.
-
Nah. It's a much broader pejorative than you're imagining. And always a pejorative.
-
@CCC:
Nah. It's a much broader pejorative than you're imagining. And always a pejorative.
It may be misused a lot, but most people use it to describe people who adhere to a very specific pattern of poorly planned moral absolutism. Crazy intersectional feminists may currently be the loudest and most obvious examples, but in a few years some other political cause will be the loudest.
It's a pejorative because those people always damage the cause they support and intentionally hurt anyone they view as a heretic in the process.

A Senator Just Filed A Bill To Force Trump To Dump His Foreign Businesses Before Taking Office
A Democratic Senator is introducing legislation to force Donald Trump to sell off his global businesses before attempting to assume the office of President of the United States. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) seeks to formally define the amorphously named “emoluments clause” which prevents all foreign payments to the president, according to ethics lawyers of both parties.
“The founding fathers were clear in their belief that any federal office holder of the United States,” said Senator Cardin, “must never be put in a position where they can be monetarily or otherwise influenced by a foreign governmental actor.”
.
.
.
Meanwhile, House Democrats are asking the system of Inspectors General implemented by the Obama Administration to look into Trump’s potential conflicts of interest with Deutsche Bank who has been his primary lender for some time. Deutsche Bank was a big player in issuing the toxic securities that wiped out trillions of dollars in real estate equity and America’s job market under President Bush. The German bank has been negotiating a cash settlement with the US Justice Department worth over $5 billion dollars as a fine for its complicity in the 2008 financial crash.House Democrats fear is that Trump could soften Deutsche Bank’s financial penalties, which would help his relationship with the bank, but not the American taxpayers who were used and abused. If Deutsche Bank were pardoned by Trump, who owes them a considerable amount of money – some of which he used to finance his Republican primary run – taxpayers could lose billions. He could also choose to offer the German bank a bailout package that not even their home country’s government wants to deliver.

Bill will go nowhere and GOP will accuse the senator in question of being divisive and un-American.

Things I have been called an "SJW" for:
Saying I think it's possible to like the new Ghosbusters movie without being part of some feminist conspiracy to ruin hollywood.
Saying I like the current Wolverine run in Marvel where Laura Kinney is Wolverine
Saying I have absolutely no problem with the new Star Wars movie featuring a woman and a black man as the two main characters.
Saying I think Idris Elba is awesome as Heimdall in the Marvel movies (even if he's wasted in such a small role)
Saying I don't think it's racist that the Black Panther movie has a 90% Black cast.
Suggesting that minority writers win Nebula Awards because the people judging the awards actually liked their work, rather than "SJW Agendas".
Suggesting that Nintendo MAY have requested the removal of the "boob Slider" from Xenoblade Chronicles X due to their whole
"Keep our games family friendly" thing, and NOT to appease a militant feminist agenda.
Saying "Trans Women are women" and "Trans Men are Men"
Advising I am a woman and politely asking that a man stop misgendering me.
