@Spam286:
That's an absurd thing to hold against her. A character wants to get stronger because she can't achieve her aims and that's a bad thing? Isn't that pretty much Zoro's entire character?
Except that by nature, Rebecca never goes on the offensive against anyone. She's not going to get stronger even if she ended up with the Gura Gura no Mi, because she'd just sit there watching as other characters belittle her, and has yet to stand up for herself even once. Zoro wants to get stronger by defeating guys that are stronger than him, Rebecca wants to get stronger by never hitting a fly.
IIRC, she was impressed by Luffy one-shotting a giant and possibly something in his fight against Chinjao. Given what she's used to seeing in the coliseum, that's not really that surprising. She's sheltered with regards to the strength of New World monsters, but I don't see why displaying surprise should count against her. The reasons for her attacking Luffy and the reason it was so easily thwarted were explained in the manga. I read desperation warring with her conscience out of that. I guess you just read weakness.
She was, what, ten in the flashbacks? Way to judge a kid for crying. That's just bizarre.
How do you suggest she 'pushes back' against the audience? IMO her shouting futilely back at an entire arena full of people would be a lot more pathetic than just ignoring it. Besides, she said herself that she doesn't care if she's hated. (Also worth noting, she didn't expect nor ask for Cavendish to defend her, and she didn't have a horse with a convenient PA system on it.)
If Rebecca was even in the same stratosphere as Luffy or the others power wise, she wouldn't have displayed any surprise at all. And if a character is so desperate that she needs to cheapshot some nice unsuspecting old man, wouldn't that indicate weakness? She also started sobbing again right after I believe. Pushback can be as simple as her saying "I will prove my abilities!" or something, but instead she just stood there sulking. She was also visibly upset by the audience's jeering.
How do we know that Logan is 'fodder'? What level of speed and CoO are we used to seeing? Block D is an isolated system full of new characters, so you've basically judged Rebecca on the strength of her clash with Luffy, which wasn't indicative of much besides the obvious fact that Luffy is stronger than her.
Characters have been consistently faster than Rebecca for a long time now. Hell, even Bluegilly pretty much had similar feats of speed.
Hakuba was the class of the block. We hadn't seen anything of interest out of Cavendish for the rest of the battle. He hadn't taken out any of the big names or roflstomped everybody. And you seem to have misread something somewhere because Rebecca's aim was never to win the respect of anybody.
he literally just did, wtf?
She came through when everyone else didn't. That's an indicator of strength whether you like it or not.
How so? Did she block or dodge Cavendish's attack? No, it landed, drew blood, and took her out temporarily.
Surviving via deus ex machina to me is not a display of strength. Is being the biggest frog in the well an indicator of beauty? No, that frog is still ugly when placed alongside a peacock, and that's just what's going to happen with Rebecca as she's placed alongside true powerhouses like Burgess.
Again, she doesn't care. If the audience still hate her after she won the block then what the heck is saying anything going to do? I believe her goal is to win the tournament, so, uh, yeah, getting into the finals does move her further towards her goal.
Uh, Soldier-san is planning on fighting Doflamingo. Rebecca's ultimate plan is to take down Doflamingo. They're doing exactly the same thing in different ways. Rebecca is doing it this way because that's the only option she has. She's a prisoner. The other stuff is crass and unnecessary. We don't know what's going to happen in the finals and we don't know how strong Sabo or Burgess are in comparison. Almost certainly stronger, but then battles are rarely so clean cut as that in One Piece.
These comments are more directed towards the comment of how I think Rebecca's victory was poorly handled. Like I've said before, it's a pyrrhic victory. Rebecca moves on in the competition, but will now be getting pummeled by a Yonkou commander instead of Cavendish. Her chances of obtaining the Mera Mera no Mi have gone from 0 to, well 0, nothing's changed. And if Rebecca wins via deus ex machina again, then Oda better have a very very very convincing way to pull it off, otherwise it'll look like something out of Bleach or Fairy Tail.
We obviously have different views on this, but I like her because she's shown a great deal of determination, willpower and resilience. She's a softer, subtler character than most, but I find that makes her stand out against the rest of the coliseum.
What determination? Is it the fact that she's trying to obtain an offensive power while she by nature is completely incapable of going on the offence? What willpower? Is it the fact that she broke down sobbing after trying to feed then stab Luffy? Or is it the fact that she just stands there looking sad while other contestants mock her.
