Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th

Now that I've had time to think about it, I'd say this opening is good, but not great. Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper chasing the golden beetle was cool, but after that it just got kinda weird. Why would they have the Straw Hats fighting the admirals now? Why use Teach's pre-timeskip design if we've already been hinted at a design change? Not only that, but that dialogue part does feel kinda out of place. Hmm. Like someone said before, this feels a lot like a video game opening.

I'm still waiting for an opening to beat One Day and Fight Together.

I'm a little disapponted at the lack of Kinemon, Momo and Law, but it's a cool opening. It's more fanservice then anything (random Admiral fights and Blackbeard and the anniversary outfits…). I kinda wish they showed more of the current arc. It's a cool opening for the anniversary tho. Otherwise, it's just... eh. I'd rank it a 7/10. Less impressive then it could've been.

Seeing as this is the first time this sorta thing's been done before in an opening, (characters talking outside of a narration sequence) I'm wondering if Funimation (if they can even get this opening at all,) will be able to have atleast that Black Beard/ Luffy part dubbed once they get to that point. It'll be weird kinda like how they had the narration for the Straw-Hat We Are opening dubbed but the song itself wasn't, though, but it's better than nothing I guess.

It's not like it's part of the actual song (as far as we know).

This opening is really good. So good that I haven't even watched what comes after it. Off to watch it again. Hopefully I can get pass the opening and onto the actual episode.

Wow, what a bad opening to watch.
I get showing us some leisury boring time, like Luffy & co catching a beetle. I get showing us what's up in the anime. What I DON'T get is pure bullshit that has no point being shown - like Blackbeard and his crew or the marines. The whole thing was fucking pointless and silly. The other thing are the costumes - my god, I sure hope they find someone else to make concepts next time. Ugh.

I won't even tell what I think about people who spoil a lot of great stuff in an opening - this alone would be enough to make me angry. I can take a small snippet or a shadow, like Doflamingo in the last opening fixing his glasses, but this? This is punching someone who only watches the anime with a hammer while screaming into his ear every last bit. They probably wanted to put SOMEONE there too, they just couldn't show his face yet.

And not a fan of the song. One Piece is an adventure. Onje Piece WORKS with music that suits it's style, the style of the current arc - I'd love to see some action from EVERY Straw Hat (instead of Nami bathing), the new land, some funny stuff SH do and maybe the crew fighting some lesser Doflamingo enemies and him being angry with his crew in the shadows. I don't know, it's just that before we'd get an opening that would hide a lot of stuff and later they would change some scenes and put there animation with stuff that's been revealed, the stuff they shown IS good - it's just spoiling a lot of stuff and could've been put in later.

An interesting opening.

The last half is probably the best, but the first half, I don't know if it's promo for the upcoming movie, indication of filler we are getting, or Toei going "F it, let's just throw things at a dart board and see what sticks."

The song is catchy, not something I've heard in One Piece before. Overall this doesn't feel like any top 5 opening, but it's solid if not confusing.

The complaints about the Admirals and Blackbeard showing up are really over-exaggerated. This opening is pretty much celebrating the 15th anniversary of the anime and hyping up future possible events.
Openings are supposed to get you hyped up and excited, whether its canon or not.

And I'll be honest, this is the first opening in a long time that's made me excited and hyped to watch an episode. I think this is probably the best opening since the start of the time skip.
No offense to We Go or Hands Up, but Wake up! is simply fresh and invigorating.
Maybe it's just the first day hype talking, but we'll see..

Oh gosh that opening was so happy and fun. Only thing I didn't like was the bit with Blackbeard, feels outta place since he hasn't appeared in forever. But aside from that, this is a massive improvement over Hands Up, which was pretty meh.

I'd say they will, remember for the Straw Hat version of We Are in Season 5, the Narrator and Gold Roger recording was a newly recorded one (in the Straw Hat version, both English and Japanese, the narrator talks slightly faster than the original first opening). To do that Avex would've had to send FUNi the karaoke track, so they'd still have that part in English even though the rest would be in Japanese.

I think it's a really great opening for the 15th anniversary. It was sporadic as hell and lacked Dressrosa but I like it a lot more than the last two.

That's the thing, while manga readers always think an opening is "full of spoilers", anime viewers are just confused, as usual. The Dressrosa scenes go too fast and make little sense for them.
Not to mention there are a lot of misleading appearances.

Hmm, very mixed feelings about this opening.

I guess I'll cover the song first. Very upbeat and got me quite pumped up. Not the best one we've ever gotten but it certainly meets expectations. No complaints.

As far as the animation goes…what the heck? The outfits were actually fine, I feel, but were overused. Should have just kept them for the first 15-second segment and title card and then switched to normal clothes. Nami's outfit is just fine, I actually like it, but Robin's is uh, yeah, just look at that one screenshot someone posted. Does not leave much to the imagination. But that's the trend lately. May as well change Robin's profession on the ship from archaeologist to call-girl.

I actually REALLY liked the beetle chase. It was long, yes, but there were so many small details that made it look like the animators were actually trying, like Luffy's arm stretches and Robin propping the table back up.

Not crazy about the fan-fiction fighting against the admirals. Although I do think the monster trio probably could hold their own for...at least as long as the anime is showing, so I won't complain about that.

Blackbeard pirates being there, in their pre-timeskip designs, felt even more random and stupid. And having dialogue mid-opening really, really does not sit well with me. Greatest offense of the opening, in my opinion.

Dressrosa scenes all looked very nice and I wish they'd taken up more space in this opening (unless they're all recycled footage from the episodes themselves, that tends to irk me). The Mexican-standoff in particular looked AMAZING. The Donquixote Family shot was also great (and they're even properly arranged by the 3 units).

So yeah, not terrible. But not great either.

Well that was…hmm.

Well okay, the song was fine. Pretty happy go lucky but I'm not gonna complain, least it felt in lieu with the action on-screem and full of energy.

Animation-wise, good. As usual they splurged and made some high grade stuff. Not sure why they stuck the crew in those outfits but it's not that big a deal to me.

The opening itself felt disjointed. The whole running after a bug thing seems so pointless. Marine fight, alright. I didn't mind the whole admiral battle cause hey least a glimpse of what's to come in the future and I'm always for seeing the crew show off abilities. (Though really they couldn't think of anything for Chopper to do other then Guard Point. Um guys, he does have a Kung Fu Point, last I checked!)

Then they got to the Blackbeard sequence. What..the..heck? That just really killed the pacing with the in-between dialogue. Whose bright idea was it to stuck that in there? If they wanna hype up the coming confrontation fine, but there was a better way to do that. (Also did the animators go through my DA account?: http://retro7.deviantart.com/art/The-Battle-of-the-Captains-169265202 LOL I kid of course but that shot with them clashing looks so eerily similar)

And of course the current arc. Felt like we just hit fast forward for the rest of the song. Oh there's the collisum tournament, oh there's Robin captured, oh there's the Franky on treads, oh there's the battle against Dolflamingo…and back to happy Straw Hats and close out the song. Don't get me wrong, I liked them but sheesh. More focus on that would've been more appreciated.

All ya'll can put down Hands Up but at least it took it's time and kept focus. This one just feels slapdash and lazy.

Agreed with everything you said ,BE. When I watched Fan-fic admirall teasers, I thought - "Is this it? Is it going to be like this, like simple one on one fights?" And we have not even seen BlackBeard after timeskip, and they show him like he did not even change… like in that Kaizoku Mosou 2 game : (
