.< Every writer uses Tropes. Tropes are like an iPhone ad "Want a story about a guy having to save a girl … theres a trope for that. Want a story about a lost hero trying to find his way home in an unfamiliar setting theres a trope for that too."

Tropes are merely the consolidation of common stories to their base ingredient and then given a title to easily refer to them. However each story is inherently different by simply how the author decides to tell it - even when an author tries to tell the opposite story of a common trope there is already a trope for that. Oda doesn't need to spend time researching tropes he has enough imagination he is re-inventing tropes well enough on his own I would assume, TVtropes exists for others to get an idea of which forms of entertainment share common tropes you might be interested in and then you can see the same one "Find the mcguffin to defeat the big bad" shown a thousand different ways.

I don't like people misusing storytelling terminology, I only see that leading to disasters.

What he's pointing out is that authors don't actually use tropes. Like when Oda writes One Piece, his decision process isn't, "I want to make a story about Doflamingo and the kingdom he rules, what tropes should I use/subvert to make a good one?" It's more natural, where he starts to think about and decide on the story and the characters. He takes pieces of inspiration and uses them to craft the world and story of One Piece, but at no point is he actively using tropes. Tropes are just convenient ways for us, as readers, to compare similar aspects of different works, but they're not something most writers actively think about when writing a story.

Bellamy, for next SH Crew-Mate! I always thought he should have been forced to join because of the past 140+ episodes. Unfortunately Luffy doesn't force anyone.
Hopefully the plots are in his favor this time. I can easily think up some sensible plots for him to end up joining.

My bet is on the dwarf girl who's teaming up with Zoro right know !!
There is no real reasoning behind, just a feeling. And it's true that it would be nice to have another girl in the crew, but it would be boring to have another generic big boobed girl (it's not that I don't like Nami and Robin character but it would be nice to have another kind of character design in the crew :p)

I also think Momonosuke might join. He already had some crew interaction with Luffy and the remaining crew on the Sunny and he has a DF which could lead to very BASIC powers but make him fit in more because doesn't have to be protected ALL the time (flying/cloud walking is very useful for escaping, also dragons) and I think the interaction between Momonosuke and the dwarf girl would be hilarious. So maybe we will see two smaller joins?

I know it is rather unlikely but we have already seen a bit of background for the two and i don't think Momonosuke or Kin'emon will join before Wano IF they join.

Momo's far too weak. The last thing the Strawhats need are more people who constantly require saving and can't actually fight very well.

Technically yes, but they fight differently; Zoro uses three swords and is more power-orientated, whereas Brook uses only one and is more speed-orientated (or sound?) Plus the latter has the chill of the underworld.

We already have a diminutive naive innocent on the crew.
In fact, we have since vol. 17.

Except not. Brook has a different techniques that utilizes a different type of sword. Likewise, he also has a music motif and has devil fruit powers. Thus these elements differentiate him from Zoro.

Bellamy on the other hand…stretches. That's it. Besides bouncing really fast back at Jaya, he hasn't done anything to differentiate himself at all with Luffy. He is not joining. Period.

True Chopper's still niave but he's not so small any more.

From the relatively brief look we've had at either Momonosuke or Wicca they fit the bratty, youngest child more than anything else. Don't count them out yet.

Right now, Jinbe and Kinemon have the best chance to join the crew(despite whether you like them or not)

Jinbe is without a doubt joining, there are factors that I've even played with to why he wouldn't but he is.
IMO, He will join as the Vice Captain, who has been officially named VC of the SH?
Some have speculated it to be Zoro, but there's no evidence,
But there is evidence suggesting that Jinbe will take on that commanding position.
-Helped Luffy throughout he's adventure ID, MF, he was guiding him, like Luffy's common sense.
-Familiar with New World, it wasn't until Robin joined that they had someone who knew the Grand Line.

What really got me buzzing though, (linking to a theory that One Piece ending will have something to do with destroying FI)
Jinbe will be the link, that boards every single Fishman onto Noah, clearing Fishman Island of any citizens.
The strong link between the Fishmen and The Strawhats keeps on growing, with all the foreshadowing, Fishmen are certainly going to have a part to play in the Ending Arc (war perhaps) having a Fishman would only make sense.

Jinbe has taken on a dream, the one of Fisher Tiger. He may not have seen it that way in the beginning, but, he still has that ambition.

I really don't think Momo or Kin'emon have a chance. Momo is too young and has no apparent fighting ability. At this point in the story, no way are they bringing along someone who can just hide in the ship. And there's no indication that he would want to be a pirate. He looks like he just wants to go home, and his only apparent dream is to be shogun.

Kin'emon has too much overlap with Zoro. Brook was another matter, since his style and sword are so much different, and he has the music element. Kin'emon just feels very stylistically similar to Zoro (and he would be a third swordsman.) Not to mention his devotion to his son.

I would love Wicca to join - I really want a girl who has a very different design than Nami and Robin. But I'm not seeing anything that indicates it. I don't think they'll get another until after Jinbe, really.

If either Momonosuke or Kinnemon joins, it has to be a very good reason for the other not to join.

Anyways, neither of them strikes me as strawhat material, even if their interactions have been fun. Not falling for the "Brook trap" I also think that they overlap too much with the crew.

Yeah, 10 not including Luffy is what I meant. I think Oda must have Luffy's original number prediction in mind since he's been counting it out in the chapter titles. And I was assuming that the poster I was replying to wasn't including Jinbe.

Maybe it's because he's always wanted Zoro to be identified by his swordsmanship more than just Luffy's partner, you know? "Greatest Swordsmen in the World" , rather than "Right hand of the Pirate King" like Rayleigh. But who knows really, the First Mate title could be another piece of development Oda is building toward for Zoro's character later on.

Usopp was originlly planned to be both sniper and first mate, this idea was even stated in-universe just before he reunited with the crew, so I can't see the problem with Jinbe being both first mate and something else (though I don't see any need for some specific 'role' on the ship at all, Zoro's swordsman and everyone's happy). Also, while everyone listens to Nami in terms of navigation and protection from weather I wouldn't call her 'practically vice-captain'. Luffy relies on her in areas she's the best in just like with for example Sanji or Franky.

It is when it's unlikely Luffy is going to die before becoming the Pirate King - the role itself isn't meaningless just in relation to the SH's it is - also they are too small to really require the role the First mate is mainly to keep the crew in line - but here we have the crew trying to keep the captain in line most of the time.

The role of the first mate is not becoming the captain after he dies! He just have more authority than anyone besides the captain. And Jinbei is most likely going to be some kind of public relations guy, since he is the only one in the crew that cares about it (and there is a precedent for that, in FI).

What physical thing have OP first mates ever been shown to do. It's always been shown as a spiritual sort of role, like the captain's oldest and most trusted companion, or someone capable of co-leadership.
It's NOT something you go out and recruit for, or sit around wondering "when will we get our first mate!".
Nothing like Shipwright, Navigator, Cook, Doctor etc.

They DONT just rely on her for those things, look at practically all the between arc scenes where they're talking about what to do next, look at how Nami acts in the majority of those portions.

This is early concept of the crew by Oda. This guy isn't Franky, it's character Oda decided not to use.

I forgot to anser to number chapter thing.
What's actually the problem with it? Oda has shown that he pays attention to them. Especially if you look at the situations when someone (more or less seriously) officially left the crew. There were 4 of them:
1. Nami during Baratie arc.
2. Chopper during Davy Baack Fight arc.
3&4. Robin and Usopp during Water 7 arc.
In every single one the person who left was 'numberless' at the time.
