Chapter 589: The Ambition of Turbulence
-
-
Ok, I stopped reading there, that sounds dirty.
Dadan has been the MVP for this flashback for me. More than Sabo.
Sabo got me interested to see what he's like in present day, but Dadan was complete as a character already in the flashback.Yup. Gotta agree. She was awesome. I really love how Oda can create an entire character's personality with so few images and words.
-
is it just me, or does trafalgar law look like sabo?
he would have the perfect reason to later hide his real name - to disappear off the radar from his parents. -
so now what luffy's gonna have a training arc to eye of the tiger or something?
-

ya got most of it, but….
Somebody missed something…did you read the reasons why people were voting Aohige (me included)
Oh and the poll was affected by the provision of Chapter SPOILERS/TRANSLATIONs. XD
:ninja: Like I said, trump card!
-
A year long story arc through Fishman island
Has there been mention of this like he did with the war arc, or are we still guessing/hoping? Probably a reasonably safe guess too.
-
@The:
so now what luffy's gonna have a training arc to eye of the tiger or something?
We can only hope.
-
Best chapter for me since Chapter Zero.
-
That was a pretty damn fine episode.
Can't wait to see how things would evolve in the present time.
-
Ok lets go back to the present.
-
-
Great chapter. Made me cry. :cwy:
I wonder whether Luffy is going to ask Hancock to make him stronger.
What makes me say that is when Luffy found out Hanocock was a Shichibukai, he said "then she is really really strong."
How else can he get someone to tell him about Haki?

Hancock mentioned she didn't even know how the control the kind of haki she has(same kind as Luffy's). Personally, I think that would come naturally,
-
So Sabo died for sure? Is it safe to say that these flashbacks didn't really matter much other than to reaffirm the notion we all know and that is Luffy is too weak to compete with the big dogs?

THAT WAS A WRONG TRANSLATION.SHE NEVER SAID SHE THAT.

She said she had that she "hadn't mastered it herself," not that she didn't know.
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/519/19/The people of Amazon Lily obviously know how to use Haki and have taught it to the members of their community. It would take too long for him to get it naturally.

read my post above
@cnet:
Hancock: He has the same power as me…?! The Sovereign Haki.........?!! What is the meaning of this?!! // Is he not a mere brat after all.........?! This boy......!! // Although... it seems he has no control over it...
Hancock: How can he have the same Overlord aspect as me?!
This is no ordinary boy!
But he has no control over it…at no place she said that she couldn't control her haki
-
So, pretty much half the chapter retold the beginning of the manga with this new information. I'm cool with that. And now that the flashback is over I wonder what's going to happen next.
-
Just read chapter.

Did you miss Demonrin and Aohige a few pages back? He's almost certainly ALIVE.
-
Ah, thanks firefist.
-
One of the things I like best about One Piece is the little touches, like how Luffy says he spent years practicing his pistol attack in chapter 1 and now we see just how much work he put into it. I also find it interesting to see Luffy struggle with self doubt for the first time.
-
read my post above
at no place she said that she couldn't control her haki
Thanks for the correct translations. My point wasn't so much about whether she can control her Haki or not but rather Luffy thinking that she is powerful. So in his simple minded way of thinking she would be the person to turn to in order to get stronger and that would give her a chance to teach him about Haki.
-
Pretty awesome little flashback to me, don't understand the people who hate it, but ehh it's just opinion. I love the eye to detail Oda has. He keeps the same people next to Makino and Woop Slap from Chapter 1, and goes back to revisit older scenes giving us a different perspective.
This is the reason I love flashbacks like this and Chapter 0. All those shout outs to current characters, back when they were different. No other series does it so well.
Best moments were Dadan crying, Garp beating the kids, the Sabo mirage, and the little countries. Oh, and…. little Luffy looks so cute!
BTW, I think most people are overlooking the real mystery here. It's not about whether Sabo is dead or alive... it's about where Ace got his hat from.
-
Its kind of depressing seeing Luffy say "Pirate King, yeah right!!" Never once has he ever doubted it. When he introduces himself, he always says that he'll be the Pirate King. But seeing him break down is just heartbreaking. Im afraid Luffy is gonna be all depressed and not believing in himself. :sad:
-
This chapter also explained why Ace didn't think Luffy would save him and why the two of them could fight well together:

I almost don't want to reread that, it's too much of a feel good moment for what is about to happen. Especially after this flash back, I'm almost afraid to read to the end of the 572, if it is indeed the magma punch chapter.

I'm a bit heart broken as well after reading the end of this chapter. First he loses his crew mates, his brother, and now this. What I'm really afraid of is that there's no one around to knock some sense into him. Unless Jinbei tells Luffy not to give up but it doesn't have the same impact it would if a crew mate told him that.
Get ready you guys, the next chapter is going to be a downer for sure.
-
Gotta love how Garp always beats up his children when he pays them a visit…
-
Hah, knew Sabo was gonna die. Eat that, doubters!
-
This chapter was nothing short of amazing and the least page holy hell.
-
@JERK:
COME ON SON: 1. Ace will die (CORRECT), 2. Whitebeard will die (CORRECT), 3. Blackbeard will remain a Shichibukai (WRONG), 4. Perona nor Boa nor Jimbei will join (?????), 5. Sabo is alive (CORRECT), 6. There will be a timeskip (?????)
[hide]@JERK:
What's the dramatic purpose of Sabo dying. This is a far bigger question then the entirely semantics based nitpicking that is saying Luffy doesn't consider him a brother anymore.
As has been said already; it'd serve as a model for Luffy to follow in getting over Ace's death and that seems to be the point of it currently since Luffy was balling over Ace's death right before reminiscing into the flashback.
@JERK:
That's a really dumb plot idea. The flashback can still help sate his mood someway, but that doesn't mean Sabo has anything to do with it.
The nitpicking about that line is valid enough, I think, given Luffy's personality and the line he says. From there people are just adhering to Oda's patterns.
Sabo dying would make his inclusion in the manga entirely pointless.
How can this not be said of every character that dies in every flashback ever?
@JERK:
Because those characters aren't stacking up next to another death. And are fulfilling a not yet done dramatic objective.
To strengthen his resolve and allow him to overcome his recent trauma… Somehow. Luffy (talks about) people dying (to Vivi), […] Luffy ought to know what death is. Think about it, he wasn't saying that stuff from his ass. He was saying em out of experience. Sabo died, it's what makes his character worthwhile in the first place; what his death brought, or the actual reason of it.
@JERK:
So you're saying Oda is using this character to substantiate attitudes and stances Luffy used and made literally a near publication decade ago. Yeah that makes sense. Actually not, because I think Oda is using the flashback for what's going on right now? Maybe???
@JERK:
Their (Whitebeard and Ace's) deaths aren't redundant. People are suggesting Ace and Sabo are both Luffy's grief to bear.
Sabo's death would be two brothers sharing a mutual experience, the development wouldn't stem explicitly from the death of the character, but from the events that were wrapped around it, thus leading to the promise on the cliff. Ace's would bring Luffy back to his roots, soften the blow by remembering the events of the past and the promise it resulted in, strengthening his resolve and pushing him to continue on in for them. Much like other flashbacks. Given Luffy is the captain, I don't see why he cannot have a death, both past and present, giving his story the most emotional baggage and development.

Haven't caught up on discussion yet, but I saw your signature and… a few questions: Did anyone really think Whitebeard would live? Anyone worthwhile, I mean? Also, wasn't your Ace prediction based off an old spoiler that was more or less confirmed with the reveal of Duval and a few other things? I know you (among others) were actively arguing about the other "Luffy loses an arm" spoiler in that thread, as well as claiming Ace would die. Lastly, wasn't the Sabo prediction closer to "Sabo won't die", with the reasoning being that it wouldn't serve a purpose to have another death weighing down on Luffy's emotional baggage*? Of course the majority of argumentation changed last chapter, to which many (myself included) figured the more likely scenario had Sabo dead since the flashback was wrapping up and the Rev's had already left.
WeI was wrong about that, but correct about everything else; namely the flashback ending with the moment on the hill, some snapshots with Ace leaving, and then getting back to real time Luffy believing Sabo was dead. -
Great chapter, I absolutely loved Dadan's reactions to the boys' setting off and it's a relief to find out so soon that Sabo is most certainly alive somewhere. The ending hit pretty hard too, dang. Really makes me wish the crew could be reunited soon.
Interesting thread as well. We have quite a number of warmongers around these parts don't we…
-
I'm sorry I haven't read through the thread, but why is there a belief that Sabo is alive? It seems to be 50-50, in my mind. Oda can pull it either way.
Though if Sabo is dead, then this flashback is mostly pointless
-
Unless Jinbei tells Luffy not to give up but it doesn't have the same impact it would if a crew mate told him that.
Yeah, as I have already said in the spoiler thread, this is what I wish that Jimbey would say to Luffy:
"Yes, you are weak. And what are you gonna do about that?" "Get your ass up from there, and go become stronger!"
But he won't… =/
-
Eh i just kinda skimmed through but where do people get the idea that Sabo is alive. On the real i ddint see it. and dude above my i agree with u 20000% my nigga we gonna have to go through some BS emotional arc when Luffy should pick his ass off the floor and become stronger instead of whinin. I aint tryin to be insensitive but u think someone like luffy would realize this.

Here is the summarized answer to your question:
First, the same frigging day that Sabo was shot down, Dragon leaves his crew and Ivankov to go do something.
He comes back late that night, Ivankov states he's late and making them wait, then notices he brought someone with him.
The crew rushes to give that someone first aid.It's so bright and obvious, I don't think this even counts as a hint. It's like a hint with a 50,000 luminescence LED Neon lights blinking.
-
Why didn't they put up a download link? They did the same for bleach and it's since yesterday, but they still haven't put it up!
-
Damn, the ending of this was powerful. One Piece has always been the biggest thing I've ever seen to push how important ones dreams are and to never doubt them… To see Luffy doubt becoming Pirate King is surreal as fuck...
-
I'm sorry I haven't read through the thread, but why is there a belief that Sabo is alive? It seems to be 50-50, in my mind. Oda can pull it either way.

Because there's highly Sabo looking kid training with the rock. I still doubt it… It makes no sense!
-
Sometimes I question if the people "reading" this comic are actually literate.
-
@Brennan:
Did anyone really think Whitebeard would live?
Yes. You can read back on the thread.
Virtually most people actually given how in those lost innocent times we still beleived Oda to not have it in him.I had my doubts all along, it had to happened thematically, but Oda? Go through with it? Would he? Would he really?
Also, wasn't your Ace prediction based off an old spoiler that was more or less confirmed with the reveal of Duval and a few other things? I know you (among others) were
Again, people, people in the know, still doubted it.
A lot of people on NPC were highly skeptical, and they all knew the secret spoilers back and forth.
When he got free from the stand people started dropping off the boat like flies, but I held on, and lo and behold….actively arguing about the other "Luffy loses an arm" spoiler in that thread, as well as claiming Ace would die.
lollll, I made up the arm thing. And it caught on as a real rumor.
Same with Zoro leaving the crew.Lastly, wasn't the Sabo prediction closer to "Sabo won't die", with the reasoning being that it wouldn't serve a purpose to have another death weighing down on Luffy's emotional baggage*?
That's the reason I thought he wouldn't die.
At no point did it ever seem like Oda was gearing up to really get rid of him. He never supplied us with much in the way of purpose.Of course the majority of argumentation changed last chapter, to which many (myself included) figured the more likely scenario had Sabo dead since the flashback was wrapping up and the Rev's had already left.

What are you talking about? That kid raising a rock is Zoro not Sabo (and on the side we also can see Kuina training her swordsmanship)…

I'm wondering… Is that avatar some kinda stereotype?
-
What are you talking about? That kid raising a rock is Zoro not Sabo (and on the side we also can see Kuina training her swordsmanship)…
That's what i thought too. But everyone seems to talk about that we see Sabo in this chapter and that's the only one who would be even close to Sabo.
Or they think that Sabo eat the rokku rokku no mi and was the stone infront of them :O -
Some people can't read right.
Your avi is really good for you.
-
I'm ready for luffy to fall for Boa in these dark/sad/down times he's having :ninja:

Or they think that Sabo eat the rokku rokku no mi and was the stone infront of them :OThey don't think that because of the image of Zoro, they know that the kid there is Zoro. I already posted the reason why everyone has come to that conclusion 3 posts before yours, read it there and you'll understand.
